Chapter 71 - The Showcase (1)

The applause that followed Dexter's introduction of Flint Lockwood gradually settled as the tall, lanky scientist made his way toward the stage. Flint adjusted the sleeves of his shirt as he walked, his wild brown hair bouncing slightly with every step. Unlike someone about to test an unfinished invention in front of hundreds of scientists, however, he didn't look particularly nervous.

He looked excited.

This wasn't the first time he had demonstrated his invention. He had spent countless hours testing it, correcting its flaws, refining its systems, and making sure the machine could actually do what he claimed it could do. Tonight wasn't about finding out whether the FLDSMDFR worked.

It was about showing everyone what it could do.

Flint reached the center of the stage and looked across the enormous hall. Hundreds of scientists, engineers, and researchers were watching him from their seats, many already whispering among themselves.

He smiled.

"Okay," Flint said as he rubbed his hands together. "Let's make some food."

Flint turned toward the machine positioned behind him.

It looked almost absurd.

A microwave-like interface formed the central section, with pipes, cables, mechanical components, a colander-like intake, and several other pieces assembled into what appeared to be an impossible combination of household appliances and laboratory equipment. Yet beneath its strange appearance was an extraordinarily sophisticated system that had taken Flint years of work to develop.

Several scientists exchanged uncertain looks.

"Is that a microwave?" Lincoln who tag along with her sister leaned forward from his seat.

Lisa, sitting nearby, adjusted her glasses and studied the image carefully. "Technically, it appears to incorporate one. Whether it still qualifies as a microwave depends on how the internal systems have been modified."

Lincoln glanced at her."You can tell that from here?"

Lisa shrugged. "The ventilation arrangement is unusual."

Flint smiled when he noticed the scientists beginning to whisper among themselves. He placed his hand against the control panel.

"This is the Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator," he announced proudly.

The massive screen behind him displayed the name.

"Or, for the sake of everyone's sanity, the FLDSMDFR."

A ripple of laughter passed through the hall.

Flint grinned and activated the machine.

The device immediately came alive.

Lights illuminated across the control panel while internal components began humming. Mechanical systems shifted into position, and the machine's central chamber began glowing softly as its internal conversion field powered up.

Flint entered a command.

The screen displayed:[CHEESEBURGER]

A mechanical voice repeated the selection.

"Cheeseburger."

The machine hummed louder.

A stream of water entered through the upper intake while the internal systems began processing it. Several scientists leaned forward as readings appeared on the large screen behind Flint.

Molecular structures formed across the display.

Energy readings climbed.

The machine vibrated for several seconds before suddenly going quiet.

DING!!!

A small compartment opened and a freshly prepared cheeseburger slid onto the receiving tray.

For a moment, the hall was silent.

Flint reached down and picked it up.

"Perfect," he said with a satisfied smile.

He took a bite.

After chewing, he nodded approvingly. "Still perfect."

The audience laughed, but Flint simply smiled and continued eating as though producing a cheeseburger from water in front of hundreds of scientists was perfectly ordinary.

The reaction around the room, however, was anything but ordinary.

Several scientists immediately began taking notes. Others were staring at the molecular analysis displayed on the screen, trying to understand exactly how the machine had reconstructed the food.

Dexter stood near the side of the stage with his arms folded, watching their reactions.

Flint finished his bite and placed the remaining cheeseburger back on the tray.

"The FLDSMDFR isn't simply cooking food," he explained while gesturing toward the machine. "It takes a basic input and reconstructs it at the molecular level according to whatever food has been selected."

The screen behind him displayed a simplified diagram of the process.

"Water goes in. The machine processes it through the conversion system, determines the molecular structure of the requested food, and then reconstructs it."

Flint smiled proudly.

"I've already tested dozens of different foods, and the system has become much more stable than it was during the early prototypes."

That earned another wave of murmurs.

One scientist whispered something to another while pointing toward the displayed energy readings.

Flint continued his presentation, explaining the machine's control system, molecular targeting, and safeguards. He demonstrated several additional food selections, each appearing within moments.

A cake, bowl of pasta, pizza. Then, because Flint couldn't resist, an enormous stack of pancakes.

The audience laughed as the machine produced the tower of pancakes, but the amusement quickly gave way to fascination as the scientists examined the readings.

When Flint finally stepped away from the machine, the applause was enthusiastic.

He gave Dexter a quick thumbs-up before leaving the stage.

Dexter returned the gesture.

The next presenter was already waiting.

A young woman walked onto the stage carrying a compact metallic case.

She was dressed neatly, her glasses reflecting the lights of the exhibition hall. Her expression was calm and focused, and she carried herself with confidence.

She placed the case on the demonstration table and opened it. Inside was a device roughly the size of a hardcover book.

The audience watched with curiosity.

The woman connected it to the demonstration terminal and activated the system.

"My name is Lisa Loud and my invention is a portable molecular analysis and synthesis unit," she explained. "It can identify the molecular structure of an unknown substance, analyze its chemical properties, simulate possible reactions, and calculate viable synthesis pathways."

The screen behind her immediately displayed a three-dimensional molecular structure.

She continued explaining the device's computational architecture while the machine analyzed a sample placed inside its scanning chamber.

Within seconds, a detailed breakdown appeared on the screen.

Several scientists began taking notes.

She manipulated the holographic display, separating the compound into its molecular components. "The system compares the structure against existing databases and then calculates possible reactions under different environmental conditions."

A few people exchanged impressed looks.

The presenter continued. "It can also determine alternative synthesis routes if a required material isn't available."

She entered another command.

The display filled with several possible pathways. "Safety restrictions are integrated into the system. It won't automatically synthesize unstable or dangerous compounds without authorization."

The machine shut down.

Lisa closed the case. "My goal was to create a portable laboratory assistant capable of performing analysis that would normally require several pieces of equipment."

The applause that followed was warm and genuine.
