Chapter 64 - Today Is Gonna Be A Great Day

The afternoon sun bathed Phineas's backyard in warm golden light. The makeshift stage they had built weeks ago, complete with amps, speakers, and colorful banners, felt alive with anticipation. Dexter adjusted the strap of his guitar, the familiar weight comforting in his hands. Jimmy stood on rhythm guitar, looking excited yet focused. Ferb twirled a drumstick between her fingers with casual confidence, while Buttercup quietly adjusted the settings on his keyboard.

They launched into the song.

Phineas started strong on lead guitar, his fingers dancing across the strings with infectious energy. His voice carried the opening lyrics with pure optimism that could brighten even the gloomiest day:

"There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation"

"'Til school comes along just to end it"

Dexter layered in crisp, melodic lead riffs, his playing precise and technically sharp. He added subtle flourishes during the verses, letting the notes ring out cleanly. Jimmy kept a steady rhythm beneath it all, his cowlick bouncing slightly as he nodded along to the beat. Ferb attacked the drums with powerful yet controlled energy, as he delivered solid backbeats and sharp fills that drove the song forward. Buttercup's keyboard work was the glue, providing rich harmonies, atmospheric synth layers, and perfectly timed chord progressions that elevated the entire track.

The chorus hit with full force:

"This could possibly be the best day ever"

"And the forecast says that tomorrow will likely be"

"A million and six times better"

They played through the song four times in a row. The first run had minor timing hiccups, especially in the transition to the bridge. Dexter suggested a slight adjustment to the chord progression, slowing it down just a touch for better emotional impact. By the third run, everything clicked. Ferb's drumming became more dynamic, Jimmy's rhythm guitar locked in tighter with Phineas, and Buttercup added a beautiful piano-like flourish during the bridge that gave the song extra heart.

During the fifth run, they let loose. Phineas sang with even more passion, grinning widely as he performed a small spin mid-chorus. Dexter allowed himself a rare smile as his solo during the final chorus flowed smoothly, the notes soaring over the rest of the instruments. The backyard filled with the upbeat, feel-good energy of the song, momentarily pushing everything else aside.

As the last chord faded, Linda emerged from the house carrying a large tray loaded with food.

"Break time, everyone!" she called cheerfully. "I brought sandwiches, fresh lemonade, chocolate chip cookies, and some fruit. You kids have been out here working hard for hours. Come eat before you collapse!"

The group eagerly gathered on the grass around the stage. Phineas passed around plates while everyone dug in. The lemonade was ice-cold and refreshing, the sandwiches hearty, and the cookies still warm from the oven. Laughter and light conversation filled the air as they recharged.

Dexter took a bite of his sandwich and glanced at Phineas. "Hey, has Isabella come by lately? I haven't seen her around for a while."

Phineas paused mid-bite, his usual bright expression dimming. He looked down at his plate, a mix of confusion and quiet sadness crossing his face.

"…No," he said softly, his voice unusually subdued. "I haven't seen her for over a month now. I tried messaging her a few times, but… nothing. It's weird. She's never gone this long without checking in or joining one of our projects."

The group fell into a brief, awkward silence.

Phineas forced a small smile.

"Anyway, quick band meeting while we're all here," he announced, pulling out a small notebook. "I did some research on the other performers at the Summer Fest. We should know what we're up against."

He flipped through the pages eagerly. "There are some really strong bands competing. First, we've got The Hex Girls, they're led by Thorn, the guitarist and singer. They have this cool goth-rock vibe with a big fanbase. Then there's The Holograms, led by Jerrica Benton. Super polished pop-rock with amazing stage presence. Their rivals, The Misfits, are also entering, they're more edgy and aggressive, led by Pizzazz. Those two bands have a long-standing rivalry."

Phineas continued, growing more animated. "We also have The Moon Goats , their leader is Luna Loud, a super energetic guitarist who brings a raw, fun rock energy. Then there's Love Händel, the classic rock band with a huge nostalgic following. Plus a bunch of other solid groups from different cities."

He looked around at the group. "Some of these bands are pretty popular and already have big fanbases. The Hex Girls and The Holograms especially draw huge crowds."

Buttercup raised an eyebrow. "So we're going up against actual famous bands?"

Phineas nodded but quickly smiled reassuringly. "Yeah, but that's okay! The real reason we're performing isn't just to win. It's to have fun, make music with friends, and share something cool we created together. Even if we don't take first place, as long as we give it our best and enjoy the moment, it'll be worth it."

The words seemed to lift the mood. Dexter gave a small nod of approval while finishing his lemonade.

"Anyway, let's get back to it! We're sounding really good." They returned to practice with renewed focus. As the sun slowly sank toward the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, they kept playing. They refined small details, tightening the pre-chorus, experimenting with vocal harmonies, and polishing the ending so it felt more triumphant. Ferb suggested a stronger drum fill leading into the final chorus, which immediately improved the energy. Jimmy proposed a clever little guitar lick that Dexter approved and incorporated.

Hours passed. The backyard lights automatically switched on as daylight faded completely. Stars began to dot the darkening sky, but the group continued. They ran the full song another six times, each run tighter and more confident than the last. By the time they finally called it a night, it was well past dusk, bordering on late evening.

"Whew!" Phineas exclaimed, wiping sweat from his forehead with a huge grin. "That was awesome! We're definitely ready for the Music Fest. This is gonna be our best performance yet!"

Everyone packed up their instruments, exchanging tired but satisfied goodbyes.

Dexter helped coil a few cables before slinging his guitar case over his shoulder.

"See you guys next weekend," he said casually, waving as he walked with Ferb toward the shed.

Once Ferb headed back toward the main house, Dexter slipped out through a side gate onto the street. He waited until he was alone before checking his watch. A priority notification from his Computer waited for him.

[Notification: The Steel Samurai delivery has arrived at Loading Bay 3. Secure transport confirmed.]

A second message followed immediately:

[Additional: The custom scrapyard recovery drone located the target robot you requested. However, an anomaly was discovered inside the wreckage. Recommend immediate personal review.]

Dexter frowned deeply. He tapped the watch again.

"Computer, show me the anomaly."

A small holographic window projected from his watch. The image showed the interior of a crushed robot chassis in the scrapyard. Nestled inside the wreckage was a metallic capsule, cracked open. Curled up within it was a small, dehydrated humanoid figure, skin wrinkled and shrunken, limbs pulled tightly against its body like it had been in stasis for a very long time.

"What the hell…?"

He zoomed in on the image. The figure looked almost… organic, yet clearly not normal. Not a corpse but something preserved.

Dexter then hurried and hailed a passing cab on the street, giving the driver the coordinates for one of the larger legal robot scrapyards on the outskirts of the city.

As the cab pulled away into the night, streetlights flashing across the windows, Dexter leaned back in his seat.
