Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Breaking Out (2)

Lian Yan paused for a moment, her thoughts briefly drifting to the fractured relationship that lay between her and her father. It was a wound that still ached, a constant reminder of the circumstances that had led her to this point. The memory of her father's betrayal was a bitter pill to swallow, a moment of pain and heartache that had shaped her into the woman she was today. Yet, she did not let it deter her from the task at hand, her focus solely on the lock that stood between Cui Delun and his freedom.

"I am," she replied, her voice steady and sure, a testament to her resolve. But then, in a softer tone, she added, "But, at the same time, I am not."

Cui Delun chuckled, a sound that seemed to echo in the confines of the prison cell. "I will not pry further," he said, his voice a low rasp. "It seems like the prime minister does not have the best sort of relationship with his eldest daughter, but that is not something for me to dig into."

Lian Yan nodded, her fingers deftly manipulating the lock-picking tool. She could feel the tension in the lock, the resistance that stood between them and their freedom. With a soft click, the first lock gave way, the sound a sweet symphony to her ears. She moved on to the second lock, her focus unwavering, her determination unwavering.

"Hey, are you almost done there?" Jian Wei's voice carried through the crack in the wall, a low murmur that barely reached her ears.

"Not yet," Lian Yan responded, her concentration solely on the task at hand. She could feel the weight of their mission, the lives that hung in the balance. With another click, the second lock gave way, the sound echoing in the dimly lit cell.

Right then, a guard was walking in the direction of their cell, his footsteps a stark reminder of the danger that lurked around every corner. Lian Yan hissed, urging Cui Delun to follow her. "Hurry," she whispered, her voice a low murmur that carried the weight of their mission or the main point of it.

She slipped through the crack in the wall, her body moving with a grace and agility that belied the gravity of the situation. But Cui Delun could not follow her, his body too old and too big to fit through the narrow opening. He cracked a few of his bones, the sound echoing in the cell as he stretched, preparing himself for what lay ahead.

"Hey! Why are you out?!" The guard's shout echoed in the prison, a stark reminder of the danger that lurked around every corner.

"Too old and too big to fit through that," Cui Delun said, his voice a low rasp. "I will have to go through the old way."

Lian Yan looked back, her heart pounding in her chest as she realized that Jian Wei was no longer on the other side of the crack. "Where did he go?" she spoke to herself, her voice a low murmur that carried the weight of her anxiety.

Her question was soon answered as she saw Jian Wei at the front entrance of the prison, his figure a stark contrast against the dimly lit corridor. He had gone ahead, leaving her to wonder if she was truly needed for this mission. But she pushed the thought aside, her focus solely on the task at hand. She had come this far, and she was determined to see it through to the end.

As the heavy prison door creaked open, Lian Yan instinctively pressed herself deeper into the narrow crack in the wall, her body barely concealed by the shadows. She held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest like a drumbeat of fear. She was no fighter, and the thought of facing the guards sent a chill down her spine. She watched, wide-eyed, as the scene unfolded before her.

Cui Delun, however, seemed to be a man transformed after those restraints came off. His earlier weariness had given way to a fierce determination, his eyes sharp and focused. As the first guard lunged at him, Cui Delun moved with a speed and agility that belied his age. He sidestepped the guard's attack, his hand darting out to grab the spear from the guard's grasp. The guard, taken aback by Cui Delun's sudden movement, stumbled forward, his momentum carrying him past the old man.

Cui Delun turned the spear in his hands, his grip firm and sure. He was a skilled fighter, his movements fluid and precise. He parried the next guard's attack, the clash of wood against metal echoing in the confined space of the cell. The guard, a burly man with a scar running down his cheek, snarled in frustration. He swung his spear again, this time aiming for Cui Delun's legs. But the old man was too quick. He jumped, the spear passing harmlessly beneath him, and countered with a swift strike to the guard's shoulder. The guard grunted in pain, his spear clattering to the ground as he clutched his injured shoulder.

More guards poured into the cell, their shouts and curses filling the air. Lian Yan watched in horror as the tide of battle seemed to turn against Cui Delun. He was outnumbered, his breaths coming in ragged gasps as he fought to hold his own. But just as it seemed that all hope was lost, a familiar figure appeared in the doorway.

Jian Wei, his black suit blending with the shadows, stepped into the fray. He moved with a grace and precision that was a sight to behold, his fists and feet a blur of motion as he took on the guards. He fought with a calmness that contrasted sharply with the chaos around him, his every movement calculated and precise.

Lian Yan remained hidden, her eyes darting between the two men as they fought side by side. She could see the trust and understanding that passed between them, a silent language that needed no words. They moved in tandem, their attacks and defenses complementing each other in a dance of combat that was both beautiful and deadly.

The guards, taken aback by the sudden appearance of a second fighter, faltered in their attacks. Jian Wei and Cui Delun seized the opportunity, their counterattacks swift and merciless. One by one, the guards fell, their spears clattering to the ground as they clutched at their injuries.

As the last guard fell, Jian Wei turned to Cui Delun, his chest heaving with exertion. The old man nodded, a smile of gratitude and respect on his lips. They had fought well together, their combined skills and determination turning the tide of battle in their favor. "I would have never thought to see us fight together again."

"It has been awhile Uncle Delun." Jian Wei finally went up to give his uncle a proper hug. "We should hurry and get out of here before any other guards find out that you are gone. "Lian Yan?" He soon call out to the woman hiding still.

Lian Yan, her heart still pounding in her chest, stepped out from her hiding place. She looked at the two men, her eyes wide with awe and admiration. They had risked their lives to free Cui Delun, and they had succeeded. But she knew that their journey was far from over. They still had to escape the prison, and the dangers that lay ahead were as real and as deadly as the battle they had just fought.

"I don't know why you needed me here if you were just going to use the front door." Lian Yan at least wanted to know that much from him. What was her purpose for actually being there?
