Tasha couldn't stop thinking about Liam's last words. "Life's too short to pretend." What did he mean by that? It was such a strange thing for him to say. It made him seem... deeper than just a rude jerk. And that bothered her.
The next few days were busy with classes and homework. Tasha found herself thinking about the group project more than she liked. She had to admit, Liam's research was always thorough. He might be annoying, but he was undeniably smart.
One afternoon, Tasha was walking back to her dorm after a Philosophy lecture. She was cutting through a less crowded path near the older part of the campus. She heard the faint strumming of a guitar. It wasn't loud, just a quiet, skilled melody.
Curious, Tasha followed the sound. She found herself near a small, hidden courtyard behind the old music building. There was a single, worn stone bench under a large, leafy tree.
And sitting on that bench, playing an acoustic guitar, was Liam.
His eyes were closed, his head tilted back slightly. His fingers moved smoothly over the strings, making a beautiful, sad tune. He looked completely different. His usual frown was gone, replaced by a calm, peaceful expression. He wasn't arrogant, or bored, or rude. He just looked... lost in the music.
Tasha stopped dead in her tracks, hiding partly behind a thick bush. She watched him, surprised. She never would have guessed he played guitar, let alone played so beautifully. He looked so vulnerable, so unguarded. It was a side of him she hadn't imagined existed.
He finished the song, the last note fading into the quiet afternoon. He opened his eyes, staring up at the leaves, a soft, thoughtful look on his face. He picked up his phone, scrolled for a moment, and then started playing another melody, this one a bit faster, but still full of feeling.
Tasha felt a strange mix of emotions. Annoyance, yes, because it was him. But also curiosity, and something else, a tiny flicker of respect. He wasn't just the arrogant rich kid. He had this hidden, artistic side. It was confusing.
She watched him for a few more minutes, completely unseen. She noticed a faded scar just above his left eyebrow, barely visible when he wasn't frowning. He looked tired, too, with faint shadows under his eyes. This was not the Liam she knew.
Suddenly, Liam stopped playing. He looked up, directly at the bush where Tasha was hiding. His eyes, usually so cold, seemed to sharpen.
Tasha's heart jumped. Had he seen her? She quickly ducked further back, holding her breath. She heard the soft click of his guitar case closing.
When she peeked out again, the bench was empty. Liam was gone.
Tasha slowly stepped out from behind the bush. The quiet courtyard felt different now. The melody he played still seemed to hang in the air. She felt a new, unsettling feeling. Liam Carter wasn't just a simple enemy. He was far more complicated than she had thought. And that made everything much, much harder.
