Chapter 97 - The weight that remains

The room didn't relax.

Even after they returned.

Even after the storm quieted.

Even after Kuro said the words—

"It stopped."

Because no one believed it was over.

Not really.

The Guildmaster studied Kuro carefully.

"…Tell me everything."

Lucien immediately raised a hand.

"I would also like to hear everything because I was there and still don't understand anything."

[That sounds like a personal problem.]

"YOU are a personal problem."

Mika didn't speak.

His attention stayed on Kuro.

Watching.

Waiting.

Kuro took a slow breath.

Then another.

"…It found me."

The Guildmaster's expression darkened slightly.

"I assumed as much."

Kuro nodded.

"It tried to pull me back again… stronger than before."

Lucien shuddered.

"Yeah. Stronger is an understatement. That thing was basically screaming 'come here' like a clingy nightmare."

[Accurate.]

Kuro continued.

"…But it stopped."

The Guildmaster narrowed his eyes.

"…Why?"

Kuro hesitated.

Not because he didn't know.

But because saying it out loud made it real.

"…Because I refused."

Silence.

Heavy.

Meaningful.

Mika's gaze softened—

just slightly.

Lucien blinked.

"…Wait."

"…That worked?"

[Surprisingly.]

The Guildmaster stepped closer.

"…You rejected it."

Kuro nodded.

"…Yeah."

The Guildmaster exhaled slowly.

"…Then that changes things."

Lucien pointed.

"WHAT DOES THAT MEAN—WHY DOES EVERYTHING 'CHANGE THINGS'—WHAT THINGS—"

Mika spoke quietly.

"It means it's not absolute."

All eyes shifted to him.

Mika's voice remained calm.

Controlled.

"It can't just take him."

Kuro's chest tightened slightly.

Hearing it said like that—

made it feel real.

The Guildmaster nodded.

"…Correct."

Lucien blinked again.

"…So we're not completely doomed?"

[We're slightly less doomed.]

"I'LL TAKE IT."

Kuro let out a small breath.

But something still felt off.

Still wrong.

"…It didn't understand."

The room stilled again.

Mika looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Kuro frowned slightly.

"…When I said no… it hesitated."

A pause.

"…Like that wasn't supposed to happen."

The Guildmaster's expression shifted.

"…Interesting."

Lucien crossed his arms.

"Yeah no that's not interesting that's terrifying."

[Same thing.]

Kuro looked down at his chest.

The faint glow beneath his bandages pulsed once.

Then stilled.

"…It asked me what I was."

Mika's eyes narrowed.

"…And?"

Kuro's voice softened.

"…I said I was me."

Silence.

Then—

Lucien slowly nodded.

"…Okay."

"…That's actually kind of cool."

[Agreed.]

Mika didn't say anything.

But his hand moved—

just slightly—

closer to Kuro's.

Not touching.

But there.

Grounding.

The Guildmaster turned away slightly, thinking.

"If the entity cannot comprehend individuality…" he murmured, "…then it may not be whole itself."

Lucien blinked.

"…Wait."

"…The giant sky nightmare is confused?"

[That's new.]

Kuro frowned.

"…What does that mean?"

The Guildmaster looked back at him.

"It means…"

He paused.

"…You may not be the incomplete one."

Silence dropped like a weight.

Kuro's breath caught.

Mika's expression sharpened.

Lucien blinked.

"…Oh."

"…OH."

[Well that changes things.]

Kuro's chest tightened again.

"…Then what is it?"

No one answered.

Because no one knew.

A faint tremor ran through the building.

Subtle.

But noticeable.

Lucien froze.

"…Tell me that was nothing."

[That was not nothing.]

Mika's hand instantly moved to Kuro's shoulder.

"Kuro."

"I felt it," Kuro said quietly.

The Guildmaster moved toward the window.

The sky outside—

still dark.

Still heavy.

But now—

moving.

Shifting.

Not violently.

But slowly.

Like something was adjusting.

Watching.

Thinking.

"…It's still reacting," the Guildmaster said.

Mika's grip tightened slightly.

"Then we stay ready."

Lucien sighed dramatically.

"Of course we do. Why would anything ever be easy?"

[Because that would be boring.]

Kuro didn't laugh this time.

His eyes stayed on the sky.

"…It said this isn't over."

Mika didn't hesitate.

"Then we'll be ready when it starts again."

Kuro glanced at him.

"…You're really not scared, are you?"

Mika met his gaze.

"I am."

Kuro blinked.

"…You are?"

Mika nodded once.

"But that doesn't change anything."

Simple.

Honest.

Real.

Kuro's chest tightened again—

but not painfully.

Something else.

Something warmer.

Lucien looked between them.

"…Okay, I'm sensing another moment."

[You are.]

"I WILL ruin it if necessary."

Kuro huffed softly.

"…Don't."

"I make no promises."

The Guildmaster turned back toward them.

"For now… we wait."

Lucien groaned.

"I hate waiting."

[Get used to it.]

Kuro exhaled slowly.

His gaze drifted back to the sky.

The storm was still there.

Still watching.

Still present.

But something had changed.

Not just in it—

but in him.

Because now—

when it called—

He knew he could answer.

Or not.

And that choice—

That simple, terrifying choice—

was something no one could take from him.

Not even the thing in the sky.

And somehow—

that made all the difference.
