Chapter 531 - Chapter 409

Behind them, the fighting around Central had never stopped.

The avenue where Xuan Juekong had fallen was still crowded with the consequences of his control even after his body stopped moving. For several moments Ziyue kept her sword raised while Shuyue watched the street around him, both waiting for some final distortion to reveal that the general had preserved one last technique beyond the point where his body could support it. None came. The unnatural compression that had made nearby buildings seem closer than they were loosened gradually rather than vanishing all at once, while the narrow regions of Void that had denied ordinary footing faded from the paving one after another until broken stone, blood, and scattered weapons occupied those spaces normally again. Darkness withdrew from the portions of the avenue Xuan Juekong had been concealing, restoring the ordinary difference between sunlight, smoke, shadow, and the black surfaces of the demonic structures around them.

What did not return so easily were the things his Severance had already broken.

A damaged formation line near the intersection remained dead even after the Dao controlling it disappeared, its inscriptions dark where the connection between three plates had been cut earlier in the battle. A Veridian root network that had lost continuity through one section did not suddenly repair itself when usable ground returned beneath it, and several coalition formations that had been forced into independent operation continued functioning that way because the relationships between their component arrays had been physically or conceptually disrupted long enough that the formations now needed to be rebuilt instead of merely restarted.

Ziyue noticed only a portion of it before the wider battle demanded her attention.

A group of demonic soldiers broke through the smoke beyond the intersection and pushed toward the avenue with weapons already raised, apparently unaware that Xuan Juekong had fallen until they came far enough around the ruined wall to see his body. Their hesitation lasted no more than a heartbeat. The officer leading them shouted something toward the rear, and the line immediately changed direction toward Ziyue and Shuyue instead of stopping to recover the general.

Ziyue lifted her sword again.

The motion pulled hard enough through the wound beneath her shoulder armor that the blade rose more slowly than she intended.

Shuyue noticed.

So did the first demon.

He accelerated.

The coalition reached them before he did.

A Blue Sphere swordsman struck the demon's weapon aside from the right while an Umbrel fighter entered low from the opposite angle, and the two of them carried the exchange past Ziyue without waiting for her to join. Behind them came several more members of the mixed team, including a Marephoros cultivator whose hooked spear caught the shaft of a second demonic weapon and dragged it down long enough for a Veridian fighter to drive hardened roots through the cracks between the paving stones around the attacker's legs.

The fighting passed around Ziyue and Shuyue instead of through them.

That alone told Ziyue more about her condition than she wanted to admit.

The coalition had seen what the two women looked like.

They had decided they were finished.

Ziyue lowered the point of her sword without sheathing it.

Shuyue shifted the scripture into her left hand and flexed the fingers of her right. The swollen forearm had stiffened badly during the final minutes against Xuan Juekong, and now that she was no longer forcing the hand to respond through constant movement, the weakness became more obvious. Her fingers closed only halfway before pain stopped them. She tried once more, slower this time, then let the hand rest against her side.

The normalizing geometry created trouble farther down the district.

A Celestara cultivator who had been flying low over a street still influenced by Central's broader formations crossed from one region into another just as the last remnants of Xuan Juekong's personal distortion disappeared. He adjusted for a distance that was no longer stretched, overshot the roof he intended to land on, and had to flare his wings sharply enough that the sudden braking motion threw loose tiles into the street below. Two nearby coalition fighters ducked under the debris while the Celestara cultivator corrected his flight and came down on the next building instead.

The demons were not spared similar mistakes.

One unit retreating across an intersection had become accustomed to using a compressed route through the central district. When that distortion relaxed, their withdrawal took several steps longer than expected, and the rear of their formation collided with the front before they understood why the spacing had changed. Coalition fighters pursuing from the west used the confusion immediately, but even they approached with more caution than enthusiasm because nobody yet knew which stretches of road had returned to ordinary distance and which were still being affected by the tower's own formations.

Central remained active.

That distinction became clearer as the battle spread farther around the avenue. Xuan Juekong's precise manipulations had disappeared, but crude spatial effects still shifted along some of the roads feeding the tower. One street remained visibly compressed between two fortified buildings, while another continued producing inconsistent range measurements for the formation specialists working behind the front. Darkness lingering over several rooftops did not move with the subtle control Xuan Juekong had demonstrated, but it remained dense enough to conceal archers and formation nodes. The tower's defenses had survived their commander.

Its defenders had survived him too.

Once the initial disruption passed, the demonic officers reorganized around that fact.

They stopped trying to recover Xuan Juekong's position and began withdrawing toward the inner structures surrounding Central, using barricades and tower-supported formations to rebuild a tighter defensive line. Soldiers who had previously maneuvered around the general's changing Space adjusted to ordinary distances where they could and used the remaining formation distortions where they could not. Several groups abandoned streets whose geometry had changed too much to trust, retreating through courtyards and warehouse passages instead. Others occupied rooftops overlooking the broader avenues and began firing down into coalition teams attempting to advance.

The battlefield had become easier to read.

It had not become safe.

Haotian reached Ziyue and Shuyue while directing a fresh mixed team past them toward the intersection. He carried his spear low as he approached, his attention moving first across Xuan Juekong's body and then to the damage visible on both women. Ziyue's shoulder plate had partially separated from the armor beneath it, exposing blood-darkened cloth through the gap, while another puncture higher along the chest had left a narrower but equally persistent line of blood running beneath the front of her armor. Shuyue's side armor had been opened along one edge, though the wound there looked shallower, and her right forearm had swollen enough that the bracer no longer sat evenly against the skin beneath it.

"Can you walk?" Haotian asked.

Ziyue nodded.

Shuyue shifted the scripture against her left side before answering. "Yeah."

Haotian did not ask whether they could continue fighting.

He turned toward the nearest secured structure and signaled two healers who were already moving between wounded coalition fighters. "Take them inside."

Ziyue's mouth tightened slightly, but she did not argue. She tested her first step before putting full weight behind it and found that her legs were steadier than her upper body, though the loss of tension after the fight had made every injury feel heavier. Shuyue fell into step beside her with the scripture tucked under one arm, and the two healers moved with them while Haotian returned to the avenue before they had crossed half the distance.

The secured structure had once been some kind of storehouse attached to the inner district, though one side of the roof had collapsed and the front doors had been removed during the fighting. Coalition healers had converted the intact portion into a temporary treatment area using tables, broken doors, folded blankets, and whatever clean cloth could be gathered quickly from supply teams moving up from the rear. Several wounded cultivators already occupied the space. One Marephoros fighter sat against the wall while a healer bound a deep cut along his thigh, and farther inside a Celestara woman lay with one wing spread carefully over two benches so that a damaged joint could be examined without forcing it closed.

Ziyue reached the first empty place along the wall before the healer stopped her.

"Not there. Sit forward."

She turned enough to see a low bench near the doorway and lowered herself onto it while the healer immediately began opening the fastenings around her damaged shoulder. The first broken plate came away easily. The second had been bent inward and had to be loosened from beneath before it could be removed without dragging metal through the wound.

The moment the pressure lifted, fresh blood spread into the cloth underneath.

Ziyue looked down at it.

The healer did not.

He had already begun cutting the damaged fabric away.

Across from her, Shuyue surrendered the scripture long enough for another healer to examine her forearm. Without the bracer covering it, the swelling looked worse. Dark bruising had spread along the inside of the arm where repeated saber impacts had driven through the armor, and the healer pressed carefully along the bone before asking Shuyue to move each finger separately.

She managed all five.

The last two responded slowly.

The healer wrapped his hand around her wrist and had her rotate the forearm.

Shuyue stopped halfway.

"That's enough," he said.

For once she did not argue or try again.

The exhaustion that had been hidden beneath movement was catching up with her now. She leaned back slightly while the healer reached for a clean wrap, her breathing gradually settling as the noise of the battle continued through the open doorway.

Outside, Haotian had already returned to the command line.

The coalition's advance toward Central had resumed, but he kept it deliberately slower than the first surge after Xuan Juekong fell. The disappearance of the general's personal distortions had created too many uncertain transitions between normal streets and tower-controlled ones for the front to move blindly. Formation specialists traveled close behind the first fighting teams, placing new markers where reliable distances had returned and leaving others untouched where measurements still disagreed.

Xuanyin's projection shifted constantly as reports reached her.

"Third avenue is normal now," one formation officer said through the communication array. "Eastern side still compressed."

"Mark both," Xuanyin answered. "Don't assume the change will hold."

Another voice cut in. "We've got a severed local array near the inner intersection. It isn't reconnecting."

"It won't," Xuanyin said. "Bypass it. Don't spend time rebuilding unless you need it for the advance."

Haotian listened while watching two mixed teams push a demonic unit out of a courtyard below Central's outer wall. The defenders retreated in discipline rather than panic, using the remaining tower formations to cover one another as they withdrew. Without Xuan Juekong changing distances around them, their movements were easier to predict, but they were still experienced enough to know where the coalition could be slowed.

A Pyrelith fighter tried to force one barricade by heating the metal reinforcement until it softened.

The tower formation beneath the road reacted.

A band of inscriptions along the lower wall brightened, and the space between the barricade and the coalition line compressed sharply enough that two fighters nearly stepped into weapon range before realizing the distance had changed.

Haotian raised one hand.

The front stopped.

The Pyrelith cultivator withdrew his heat.

The compression eased.

Xuanyin saw the response in the formation readings at almost the same time.

"Leave that barricade," she said. "The lower line is tied directly into Central."

Haotian turned the nearest teams toward the adjacent courtyard instead.

The defenders inside tried to hold it.

They failed after a sustained exchange that forced them back through a narrow service passage, and the coalition took the courtyard without touching the active line beneath the road.

That was how the advance continued from then on.

Not by breaking everything in front of them, but by learning which pieces could be disturbed safely and which had to remain untouched until the formation teams understood what Central was carrying beneath the district.

From the treatment room doorway, Ziyue could see only a portion of the movement, but enough of Central rose above the surrounding buildings to remain visible whenever smoke shifted. The tower's exterior inscriptions were still cycling rapidly, bands of dark-red light climbing and descending along different sections without a pattern she could follow from here. Xuan Juekong had fallen less than a few streets away, yet the structure he had defended continued working as though his death had changed nothing about the task buried beneath it.

The healer beside Ziyue finally pulled the last damaged piece of armor away from her shoulder.

The wound beneath was deeper than it had looked while the plate remained in place.

He began cleaning it without comment.

Ziyue watched the light continue moving along Central.

The general was dead.

The tower was not.

By the time the healers finished stabilizing Ziyue's shoulder and wrapping Shuyue's forearm tightly enough to keep the swelling from worsening, the coalition had secured most of the streets immediately surrounding Central without attempting to force its foundation. The distinction had become increasingly important. Several of the demonic defensive positions could be taken through ordinary fighting once Xuan Juekong's precise Space and Void control disappeared, but every time someone struck too deeply into a formation plate, collapsed a wall connected to the lower network, or tried to tear apart one of the active channels beneath the roads, Central reacted by shifting pressure somewhere else.

The tower was not merely protecting itself.

It was still carrying the rift.

Haotian stood in what had once been a broad administrative courtyard on the western side of Central while formation specialists opened the paving several paces from the tower's foundation. The courtyard had already been cleared of defenders, though evidence of the fighting remained everywhere: broken spear shafts, damaged roof tiles, splintered doors, and several lengths of blackened formation material that had been pulled from a barricade and stacked against a wall so nobody mistook them for active components. The nearest section of Central rose beyond the courtyard buildings, close enough now that the sound of its cycling formations could be felt beneath the soles of the feet as much as heard.

It was not a single pulse.

That had become obvious once the formation teams were close enough to work directly beneath it.

Several different rhythms overlapped inside the foundation.

One band of inscriptions would brighten, hold for several breaths, then dim as another farther around the tower intensified. A third set remained quiet until pressure changed somewhere else, then woke abruptly and accepted part of the load without any visible command. The pattern repeated in slightly different combinations each time the teams disturbed one of the outer branches.

Xuanyin's projection above the courtyard had stopped resembling the cleaner maps used during West and South. Lines appeared, faded, and reappeared in different strengths as new readings arrived, and several portions had been deliberately left unresolved rather than filled with guesses.

Haotian watched a Blue Sphere formation elder lower a thin measuring rod into the opened paving while two younger specialists held a receiving plate above the exposed channel. Dark-red light crawled through the metal beneath them, then weakened as the rod approached one side.

The elder adjusted the angle and tried again.

The receiving plate brightened.

"Same channel?" Haotian asked.

The elder shook his head without looking up. "No. Same housing."

That was worse.

The paving had been lifted from what looked like one embedded conduit, but beneath the stone several narrower formation pathways occupied the same reinforced trench. Their inscriptions crossed at regular intervals without actually joining, some carrying active pressure while others remained dormant enough that ordinary perception barely registered them.

A Veridian cultivator knelt beside the opening and guided two narrow roots through cracks along the side of the trench rather than touching the channels themselves. The growth moved slowly, probing through loose soil and fractured mortar until one root emerged beneath another slab farther down the courtyard.

He pointed toward it.

"Continues east."

The formation elder looked at the projection.

Xuanyin adjusted the line herself.

"Only mark the route," she said. "Don't connect it to anything yet."

The cultivator nodded and kept the roots thin.

A Pyrelith specialist working near the adjacent wall had already learned why that caution mattered. One of Central's metal housings had fused shut during the fighting, and his first attempt to soften the seam with heat had caused an inactive branch inside the same structure to brighten suddenly. He stopped immediately, but the change had been enough for a separate formation plate beneath the courtyard to accept more pressure.

The Marephoros cultivator beside him touched two fingers to the outer metal and cooled it gradually until the glow faded.

Neither man tried again until the formation specialists understood which branch they had disturbed.

The work moved slowly because almost nothing inside Central was isolated.

That was the difference Xuanyin had been trying to explain before the assault.

South had hidden important channels beneath roads and structures, but once those channels were found, their relationships could be traced toward a lower convergence. Central had been built to survive exactly that kind of dismantling. A broken path did not necessarily reduce the tower's function. Another path could assume the load.

Sometimes two could.

Sometimes one dormant branch activated only after a completely different line had been weakened.

The system was redundant enough that damage alone could make it harder to understand.

Haotian crouched beside the open trench while another set of readings was taken.

"How many main loops?"

Xuanyin did not answer immediately.

Her projection changed twice before she spoke.

"Six that I'm willing to call major."

Haotian looked up at the overlapping lines.

"And the others?"

"Some are branches. Some may be reserve loops. I'm not naming them until we force them to show what they do."

That answer suited him better than a false certainty would have.

A formation specialist on the eastern side reported another active line.

Xuanyin added it.

The new route crossed two of the major loops without merging into either.

Haotian studied the map for several breaths before standing again.

"So we can't shut one down and assume we removed its load."

"No."

"If we cut one?"

"Central decides where the pressure goes."

Haotian's eyes moved toward the tower.

"That's what we stop."

Xuanyin enlarged the lower network.

"We need to decide where the pressure goes before we separate anything."

That became the basis of the next stage.

Rather than dismantling the active channels as soon as they were found, the formation teams began constructing temporary bypasses between selected portions of the network. These were not large arrays. Xuanyin deliberately kept them short and independent, partly because Xuan Juekong's Severance had left too many damaged connections around the district to trust long chains and partly because Central itself responded aggressively whenever too much of the network was tied together at once.

The first bypass was built between two exposed channels on opposite sides of the western courtyard.

Blue Sphere formation cultivators laid the inscription plates.

A pair from the Nine Celestial Sects checked the sequence independently.

Veridian roots stabilized the loose ground beneath the plates so movement in the damaged courtyard would not shift their alignment.

Pyrelith heat softened one warped metal bracket enough for it to be straightened without striking the active formation housing beneath it, and Marephoros cooling fixed the bracket back into place once the angle was corrected.

Nobody worked alone.

Nobody moved quickly.

That made the operation feel almost strange after the fighting that had brought them here. Only a few streets away, coalition fighters were still clearing the remaining defenders out of connected warehouses and fortified passages, yet within the courtyard the danger came from a line of inscriptions brightening a fraction too quickly or from a pressure reading changing when it was not supposed to.

The first temporary bypass was nearly complete when a Celestara runner dropped into the courtyard with a message from the northern team.

"They found another crossover beneath the storage hall. It's carrying load now."

Xuanyin's projection changed before the runner finished speaking.

Haotian looked toward the new branch.

It had been faint less than a minute earlier.

Now it was brighter than one of the six major loops.

"Why did it wake?"

The northern specialist answered through the array. "We didn't touch it."

Xuanyin compared the pressure readings.

"The western loop dropped."

Haotian looked down at the bypass being assembled beside him.

"Because of this?"

"No. Not yet." Xuanyin enlarged a different section. "The fighting collapsed part of an outer support line north of the tower. Central compensated."

The bypass remained untouched.

That was enough to demonstrate the problem more clearly than any explanation.

The tower was adapting continuously to damage across the district.

Even before they began dismantling it deliberately, changes outside the foundation were already shifting the load internally.

Haotian turned toward the nearest officer.

"Tell the front not to break any formation structures unless they have to survive."

The order spread outward.

Coalition fighters could continue clearing defenders, but from that point onward they were told to leave intact plates, embedded channels, wall inscriptions, and tower-connected supports alone unless those systems directly threatened them. The goal had shifted from conquering Central by force to keeping the thing stable long enough to take it apart correctly.

That restraint frustrated several fighters who had spent the previous hours learning to destroy demonic formations whenever they found them, but the reason became obvious soon enough. A Blue Sphere swordsman cutting through an interior passage nearly struck a glowing support plate before an Umbrel cultivator caught his arm and pulled him sideways. Instead of destroying the plate, the team drove the defenders out through another doorway and left the formation structure standing behind them.

The system continued cycling.

Back in the courtyard, the first bypass was completed.

Xuanyin had the teams test it without transferring full pressure.

A small amount of energy moved through the temporary line and entered the receiving channel.

The plates held.

The ground beneath them stayed stable.

No unexpected branch activated.

"Again," Xuanyin said.

They increased the transfer slightly.

The receiving channel brightened.

One nearby loop dimmed.

Another on the opposite side of Central increased by a smaller amount.

Xuanyin watched both changes.

"Stop."

The team closed the bypass.

The network settled back toward its earlier distribution.

Haotian looked at her projection.

"It still compensated."

"Because we haven't isolated the source loop yet."

"Can we?"

"Yes, but not by cutting it."

She rotated the lower map.

"We have to make the receiving path more attractive than the alternatives."

Haotian glanced toward the formation elder.

The man had already begun thinking through the same problem.

"If the temporary route carries lower resistance," he said, "Central should shift there first."

Xuanyin nodded.

"But only if we prevent the neighboring loops from taking the load at the same time."

That meant more bypasses.

Not one.

Several.

The work expanded through the inner district.

Teams began opening access points at carefully chosen locations around the tower rather than excavating everything beneath it. Veridian cultivators proved especially useful because their roots could trace physical housings without touching the active inscriptions. They fed narrow growth through soil, wall cavities, drainage gaps, and broken foundations, allowing the specialists to confirm where one reinforced trench continued before anyone lifted the next section of paving.

Marephoros cultivators followed high-output channels by temperature differences that the naked eye could not reliably distinguish, cooling adjacent structures just enough to separate heat produced by ordinary battle damage from heat being generated by active formation pressure. Pyrelith specialists worked in the opposite direction where needed, warming seized fittings or fused housings by small amounts rather than pouring fire through entire structures.

Umbrel fighters moved through the deepest passages under the tower because several access tunnels had lost their lighting during the assault. They did not use their shadow techniques to manipulate the formations. They used them to move quietly through spaces where demonic stragglers might still be hiding and to check side chambers before the specialists entered.

Celestara cultivators became messengers more often than attackers. Communication formations worked through most of the district now that Xuan Juekong was dead, but some portions near Central still produced enough interference that voice and projection signals arrived late or distorted. Flyers moved above the roofline with written readings, marked plates, and updated instructions whenever Xuanyin could not trust the array.

The tower gradually became less of a battlefield objective and more of an enormous machine being opened while still under load.

Haotian moved between the teams as the shape of the problem became clearer.

The six major loops Xuanyin had identified were real.

So were at least four smaller reserve branches capable of accepting significant pressure when the main loops changed.

Two of those branches were normally almost inactive.

One existed primarily to move load between the northern and western sides.

Another fed directly toward the main rift and only brightened when Central's internal balance shifted too far in one direction.

That last discovery stopped the work for several minutes.

The line ran deeper than most of the others and could not be traced physically all the way from the tower without tearing open an enormous portion of the district. Xuanyin did not need the whole route once she compared its rhythm to the pressure coming from the rift.

"It's a stabilization feed," she said.

Haotian stood beside the projection while the formation elder studied the same pattern.

"From Central to the rift?"

"And back."

That drew the elder's attention immediately.

"Bidirectional?"

Xuanyin changed the projection to show the pressure over several cycles.

"Not evenly. Central absorbs when the rift surges, then returns part of that pressure through another phase."

Haotian watched the alternating readings.

That explained why Central's network had never behaved like an ordinary defensive formation.

It was not simply supplying power outward.

It was taking pressure from the rift, distributing it through redundant loops, and returning controlled portions when the opening required stabilization.

Destroying those loops carelessly could send that pressure back toward the rift all at once.

Or trap it inside the tower foundation.

Neither possibility was acceptable.

The formation elder exhaled slowly and looked across the courtyard where the first temporary bypass had been built.

"We need a controlled route all the way through."

Xuanyin agreed.

"One route at a time. We reduce redundancy before we remove the final stabilization feed."

Haotian looked around at the crews working beneath Central.

"How long before we can move the first major loop?"

"No guess."

He glanced toward the projection.

Xuanyin continued before he could ask anything else.

"We'll know when the bypasses stop making the reserve branches wake."

That was the only useful answer.

The next hour was spent testing exactly that.

One temporary channel was widened.

Another was built farther north.

A third connected two loops that had originally never transferred directly between each other but could be made to do so through a carefully aligned formation bridge. Each was tested under low load first, then increased gradually while Xuanyin watched how Central responded.

Several attempts were rejected.

One bypass caused the eastern reserve branch to brighten too quickly.

They closed it.

Another transferred pressure cleanly but heated the plates beyond what the temporary materials could sustain.

Marephoros cooling reduced the temperature, but Xuanyin rejected the route anyway because it required too much continuous intervention.

The third held.

So did the fourth.

Eventually the network reached a configuration where the team could increase pressure through one selected path and see the intended major loop dim without two reserve branches immediately replacing it.

Xuanyin watched three full cycles before she allowed herself to trust the reading.

Haotian stood beside the exposed channel with the formation elder and waited.

The targeted loop dimmed again.

The receiving path brightened.

The reserve branches remained nearly unchanged.

For the first time since they began opening Central's lower network, the tower had moved pressure where they wanted it to go instead of where it chose for itself.

Xuanyin's voice came through the array.

"Hold it there."

Nobody touched the loop.

Nobody celebrated.

The specialists simply kept their hands near the controls and watched the readings while the formation completed another cycle.

Then another.

The targeted loop remained weak.

Central was still running.

But one part of its redundant heart was finally carrying almost nothing.

Xuanyin kept the first major loop under observation for another three cycles before she allowed anyone to touch it.

By then the difference between an inactive line and a merely weakened one had become familiar enough that the formation specialists no longer trusted brightness alone. The targeted loop had dimmed to a thin red trace inside its housing, but the plates connected to it still carried enough residual pressure to respond whenever the receiving bypass fluctuated, and every response had to be compared against the reserve branches before anyone could be certain Central had truly stopped depending on that route. The formation elder crouched beside the exposed trench with one hand resting near the isolation plate while two younger specialists watched separate measuring arrays, each waiting for a different sign that would tell them the load had returned.

Nothing changed.

The temporary receiving route continued carrying the pressure Xuanyin had directed into it. The western reserve branch remained quiet. The smaller northern branch that had awakened repeatedly during the earlier tests stayed dim, and the stabilization feed running toward the main rift did not increase beyond its normal cycle.

Only then did Xuanyin tell them to begin.

The specialists did not break the loop.

They isolated it.

Two temporary plates were placed on either side of the section they intended to remove, not to stop energy by force but to prevent any late pressure from reentering once the physical connection was opened. A Veridian cultivator spread thin roots beneath the trench to keep fractured soil from settling while the housing was lifted, and the Marephoros specialist beside him cooled the metal gradually enough that it contracted away from the locking edges without shocking the inscriptions engraved along its interior. The work had none of the violence that had characterized the battle for the streets above. Every movement was measured against the readings. The housing opened a finger-width, paused while the arrays were checked, then opened farther only after Xuanyin confirmed that Central had not attempted to redirect pressure back into the abandoned line.

Haotian remained close enough to see the faint inscriptions inside the conduit finally lose their last active glow.

"Separate it," Xuanyin said.

The elder removed the central locking piece.

For a moment nothing happened beyond the soft scrape of metal against stone.

Then the line on Xuanyin's projection disappeared.

The receiving bypass brightened slightly as it absorbed a minor correction, but none of the reserve branches woke.

The first major loop had been removed from Central while the tower continued operating.

Haotian looked toward the exterior of the structure. The bands of formation light climbing the western face had changed their rhythm, but the tower itself showed no sign of instability. It remained standing above the district, still humming through the paving and still exchanging pressure with the main rift through the deeper feed they had not touched.

The formation elder released a slow breath and immediately began inspecting the isolation plates instead of celebrating the success.

They all understood that one completed removal proved only that the method worked once.

Central had five other major loops.

The second was less cooperative.

Xuanyin chose a southern route because the existing bypasses gave them several controlled places to send its pressure, and the first stage proceeded much like the earlier transfer. The loop dimmed as energy moved into a temporary western channel, then weakened further when a second bypass accepted part of the load. Specialists on three sides of Central reported stable readings. The reserve branches remained quiet. Haotian was already moving toward the southern access point when one of the formation arrays beneath the tower brightened hard enough to cast red light across the floor of the chamber surrounding it.

The specialist nearest it froze with his tool less than an inch from the line he had been preparing to isolate.

"Stop."

Xuanyin's order reached every team at once.

Nobody moved.

The southern loop had not brightened again.

Instead, a branch that had been almost invisible on the earlier maps was taking pressure beneath the eastern foundation.

Haotian turned toward the projection while new readings arrived.

The branch was narrow enough that they had previously classified it as a secondary support route. It had carried almost nothing while all six major loops remained active and had stayed quiet through the tests on the first removal. Now its output was climbing every few breaths.

"Where does it go?" Haotian asked.

Xuanyin enlarged the eastern foundation.

"Still tracing it."

The Umbrel team below that section had already started moving.

Their route took them through a maintenance passage too narrow for several cultivators to walk abreast, with low stone overhead and only intermittent formation light running along the walls. The first Umbrel fighter advanced ahead of the specialists while a second kept close enough behind to maintain visual contact, and when the passage opened into a cramped chamber beneath the eastern tower supports, they found a set of formation plates that had not been visible from the outer trenches at all.

The plates were old.

Not abandoned.

Buried.

Dust and stone residue covered most of their surfaces, but the inscriptions beneath had begun glowing with increasing intensity as Central pushed pressure through them.

The formation specialist following the Umbrel fighters knelt beside the nearest plate without touching it.

"This wasn't carrying anything before."

Xuanyin received the reading.

The new branch connected the weakened southern loop to one of the deeper channels leading toward the stabilization feed. It was not a full replacement for the major loop. It was an emergency transfer path built to prevent exactly the kind of controlled isolation they were attempting.

Haotian looked toward the southern team.

The specialist there still had his tool suspended beside the loop.

"If they'd separated that?"

Xuanyin answered after comparing the pressure increase.

"This branch would have taken the load after the cut."

"And then?"

"I don't know yet."

That was enough.

The southern team withdrew their tools.

The temporary bypasses remained active while Xuanyin recalculated around the hidden branch. Because the major loop had already been drained significantly, they could not simply return everything to the earlier arrangement without risking another compensating shift, so the coalition was forced to hold the partial transfer while a new route was mapped.

The delay stretched.

Several specialists rotated out to drink and recover while others took their places at the arrays. Celestara runners carried updated readings from the eastern chamber when communication flickered inside the deeper passages, and a Veridian cultivator extended roots along the outside of the hidden plates until he found where their physical housing joined the larger foundation. Pyrelith heat was avoided entirely there. The concealed route was carrying enough pressure that nobody wanted to change the surrounding metal temperature until they understood how tightly the inscriptions depended on its shape.

Aboveground, the battle had quieted without ending.

Most of Central's defenders had been pushed out of the inner courtyards, but scattered fighting continued through the surrounding structures where demonic groups had refused to retreat farther. Haotian left fresh teams to contain them rather than allowing the cleanup to interfere with the tower operation. The order not to destroy formation structures remained in place, forcing fighters to take doors, halls, stairs, and rooftops by ordinary means whenever active inscriptions were embedded nearby.

That restraint had begun producing its own difficulties. A Pyrelith fighter fighting through one narrow hall had to abandon a broad fire technique because the wall beside him carried part of Central's support network, leaving him and his Marephoros partner to force the defenders backward with weapons instead. Elsewhere, a Veridian team stopped using deep roots altogether once their cultivator discovered that several foundation channels crossed beneath the floor they were trying to control.

The coalition adapted.

They had spent a year learning to fight as mixed teams. Now the same discipline was being applied to not breaking the battlefield beneath their own feet.

Inside the temporary treatment room, the sound of those distant engagements arrived as an irregular mixture of steel, shouted orders, and impacts against the outer walls. Ziyue heard most of it without being able to see more than the nearest courtyard from where she sat.

The healer had finished cleaning the wound beneath her shoulder plate and was now binding the joint in a way that preserved enough movement for her to walk without allowing her to raise the arm freely. The deeper cut had required more work than she expected. Once the damaged armor was removed, the saber line proved to have opened farther across the upper shoulder than the plate had allowed her to feel during combat, and the healer had spent several minutes closing the worst of it before wrapping the area tightly.

When Ziyue tested the arm, he caught her wrist before she could lift it past chest height.

"Don't."

She lowered it again.

Across from her, Shuyue sat with her back against the wall while another healer finished securing the wrap around her forearm. Her scripture rested beside her rather than in her hands. The swelling had made the right hand unreliable enough that the healer had forbidden her from gripping anything heavier than necessary until it improved, and the restriction seemed to bother her more now that she was no longer distracted by Xuan Juekong's saber.

She stared through the open doorway toward Central.

The tower lights continued changing.

Neither woman needed to be told that the fight was not finished simply because they were no longer in it.

Shuyue flexed her wrapped fingers once, slowly, then let them relax against her knee when the movement pulled through the bruised forearm.

Ziyue glanced over.

"Hurts?"

Shuyue nodded.

That was the end of the conversation.

Outside, Xuanyin finally identified the hidden eastern branch well enough to make the next decision.

It could not carry the entire southern loop safely.

That was the useful part.

The branch had been designed to accept short surges, not sustain the full load of a major route. Central had activated it because the controlled bypasses made it appear to be the easiest remaining compensation path, but its own inscriptions were already heating beyond their ordinary range as the pressure continued increasing.

Xuanyin did not let the tower discover what would happen when it reached its limit.

She changed the transfer.

One of the western bypasses was reduced slightly. The northern temporary route accepted more. A smaller independent plate was opened between two secondary channels they had tested earlier but rejected as a primary path.

The pressure moved.

The hidden eastern branch dimmed.

Not completely.

Enough.

Xuanyin held the new arrangement until three cycles passed without another unexpected activation.

Only then did she return to the southern loop.

The specialist who had almost separated it earlier crouched beside the exposed channel again, though this time three different arrays were positioned around him and one Celestara runner remained at the entrance to the chamber in case the communication formation failed during the final transfer.

The loop weakened.

The hidden eastern branch remained stable.

The western and northern bypasses took the intended pressure.

The specialist placed the isolation plates.

He waited.

Xuanyin waited longer.

When she finally gave permission to proceed, he began removing the locking assembly one piece at a time.

The second major loop came free without forcing another reserve route awake.

Central adjusted, but it adjusted through the pathways they had prepared.

The success changed the pace of the operation only slightly.

No one became careless.

The third major loop required another set of bypasses because its pressure could not be shifted into the same western routes without overloading them. The fourth had a secondary connection buried through a wall support that had to remain physically intact until the transfer was complete. The fifth turned out to share a housing with one of the main stabilization channels deeply enough that the specialists could not separate the metal without first creating a temporary support around the entire assembly.

Each problem made Central look less like a single tower formation and more like an accumulation of contingencies built over years.

The structure had been designed so that losing one path did not matter.

Losing two should not matter.

Even losing several at once could be absorbed as long as enough alternate routes remained.

Xuanyin's solution was not to overpower that redundancy.

It was to remove the choices one by one while always giving the remaining pressure somewhere controlled to go.

As each major loop disappeared, the effects aboveground began changing.

Some streets that had remained compressed even after Xuan Juekong's death slowly returned to ordinary length. The transition was less abrupt than when his personal Dao control vanished, because the tower formations could not make the same precise local changes he had manipulated during combat. Instead, the crude spatial compression weakened over several cycles until scouts measuring the roads found their readings becoming progressively closer to physical distance.

A Celestara team tested one avenue with marked lines along the rooftops and reported that the discrepancy had fallen by almost half after the third loop was removed. By the fourth, the same route differed so little from normal that the scouts stopped needing repeated passes to judge it.

Dark concealment over several structures thinned as well.

Again, it was not the same as Xuan Juekong's Darkness Dao. The tower-supported effect was broader, slower, and tied to visible formation nodes built into rooftops and walls. As pressure was redirected away from those branches, the concealment weakened until fighters below could distinguish doorways, roof edges, and movement through the shaded structures without Shuyue's Purification Bloom or specialized detection techniques.

Formation communications improved at the same time.

Xuanyin began receiving reports from places where the arrays had previously arrived several breaths late, and the projection above the western courtyard stopped flickering whenever information crossed the inner district.

None of those improvements persuaded her to move faster.

The fifth loop nearly demonstrated why.

Its load appeared to transfer perfectly into the prepared bypasses. The primary line dimmed. Reserve branches stayed quiet. The stabilization feed toward the main rift showed only a modest increase.

The specialists placed the isolation plates.

One of them began loosening the housing.

A thin inscription beneath his hand brightened.

He stopped immediately.

Not because Xuanyin ordered him to.

Because everyone working around Central had learned what unexpected light meant.

The line he was opening was still dark.

The new glow came from beneath it.

A smaller secondary channel had begun taking pressure inside the same housing.

The specialist pulled his hand away.

Haotian, standing several paces behind him, saw the change before the projection updated.

"Still connected?"

The elder leaned closer without touching the metal.

"Not to the loop."

Xuanyin traced the new reading through the foundation.

"It's feeding another plate."

"Which one?"

A pause followed.

Then the projection showed the route.

The new pressure was moving toward an array beneath Central's inner support structure.

Nobody had classified that array as important because it had remained nearly inactive throughout the entire operation.

Now it was brightening.

Xuanyin had all transfers held where they were.

For several minutes the tower remained in a configuration nobody dared disturb further while specialists traced the unexpected route. Veridian roots followed the housing beneath the floor. Umbrel fighters entered another maintenance passage. A Blue Sphere formation cultivator compared the newly active inscriptions against the old patterns visible on several dismantled plates.

The answer became clear gradually.

The inner array was not another reserve loop.

It was a balancing node.

Central used it to compare pressure across multiple sections of the network before deciding where the next redistribution should occur.

Removing the fifth loop without preserving that function would not simply shift its load.

It would make the remaining system worse at controlling the pressure still inside it.

Haotian looked at the map.

"So we keep it."

"For now," Xuanyin said.

The solution required a temporary formation to imitate part of the balancing node's function while the fifth loop was separated. That work took longer than any of the previous bypasses because the specialists were no longer simply carrying energy from one point to another. They had to reproduce enough of Central's own comparison logic that the surviving network continued treating the temporary structure as a valid part of itself.

Several attempts failed before they were ever connected.

One produced inconsistent readings between two plates.

Another responded too slowly when the western pressure changed.

A third worked under low load but allowed one reserve branch to brighten whenever the main rift feed surged.

The fourth held.

Xuanyin tested it through repeated cycles before trusting it.

When the balancing node continued operating through the temporary structure and the fifth major loop remained almost empty, the specialists finally returned to the housing they had started opening earlier.

This time the hidden line beneath it stayed dark.

The loop was separated.

The temporary balancing formation remained active.

Five major loops were gone.

Central still stood.

Its exterior lights had become noticeably weaker, and the cycling pattern along the tower no longer moved with the same overlapping complexity it had when the operation began. Most of the surviving pressure now traveled through one principal major loop, several controlled bypasses, the temporary balancing formation, and the deeper connection to the main rift.

Xuanyin stared at the simplified projection for several breaths.

Haotian came to stand beside it.

The system was finally beginning to look understandable.

That did not make the remaining work easier.

The last major loop was carrying more pressure than any of the others had carried alone.

Beneath it, the main stabilization feed continued moving energy toward and away from the rift.

They had removed most of Central's redundancy without shutting the tower down.

What remained was the part they could not afford to lose control of.

The final stage of dismantling Central took longer than removing the first five major loops combined, not because the remaining network was more complicated, but because almost everything still carrying meaningful pressure now depended on the same handful of routes.

Xuanyin's projection had become much cleaner than it had been when the coalition first opened the tower foundation. Most of the overlapping lines were gone, leaving one principal loop, the temporary balancing formation, several short bypasses, and the deeper stabilization feed that continued exchanging pressure with the main rift. That simplification should have made the work easier. Instead, it left the specialists with far less room for error. Earlier, if one transfer performed poorly, Central could absorb the mistake through another route while the teams corrected it. Now every major adjustment showed immediately in the remaining network.

Haotian stood inside the western foundation chamber while the last loop completed another cycle. The chamber had become crowded with temporary equipment over the course of the operation. Inscription plates had been fixed to walls, laid across the floor, and bridged over opened trenches where the original routes had been isolated. Measuring rods stood beside nearly every surviving active channel, and several had been marked directly with charcoal so the teams could compare changes without depending entirely on the projections above them.

The surviving major loop ran beneath the center of the chamber before disappearing through a reinforced section of foundation toward the eastern side of the tower. Its glow had grown steadily brighter as the other loops were removed, though the temporary bypasses kept it from receiving the full burden Central would otherwise have concentrated there.

The problem was that no bypass they had built could replace it completely.

The main loop was tied directly into the balancing process that regulated how much pressure Central accepted from the rift and how much it returned. The temporary formation the specialists had constructed could imitate part of that process, but not enough to sustain the entire system once the last major loop disappeared.

Xuanyin had therefore stopped treating the loop as something they could simply remove.

They first had to reduce Central's dependence on it.

The formation elder beside Haotian adjusted one of the measuring plates and watched the readings settle.

"Rift feed is rising again."

Xuanyin answered through the communication array. "By how much?"

The elder gave the number.

A second specialist checked the pressure along the temporary balancing formation.

"Still stable here."

Xuanyin changed the bypass distribution.

The western temporary route narrowed slightly while the northern line accepted more. The main loop dimmed by a small amount, though the deeper stabilization feed immediately brightened in response.

Haotian watched the shift travel through the floor.

Central was still trying to preserve the rift even as they dismantled it.

That had become the defining problem of the entire operation. The tower did not understand that the coalition wanted the rift isolated. Every structure built into it had been designed to prevent exactly that outcome. If pressure rose at the rift, Central absorbed it. If one internal path weakened, another assumed the burden. If the distribution became uneven, the balancing node corrected it.

To shut the tower down without losing control, they had to make Central perform its own final transfer into a configuration from which it could safely be disconnected.

Xuanyin had the teams begin by reducing the temporary routes one at a time rather than adding more.

The decision seemed backward until the first test began. By closing one lesser bypass gradually, they forced the remaining pressure toward the main loop and the direct stabilization feed. Instead of allowing that increase to continue, another team opened a controlled release into a temporary holding array built beneath the northern courtyard.

The array was not connected to the rift.

It existed only to accept a limited amount of circulating pressure while the specialists changed the network around it.

The first transfer worked.

Dark-red light spread across the holding plates until every inscription was active, then stopped increasing when the team closed the intake.

The main loop dimmed slightly.

Xuanyin waited through another cycle.

Nothing unexpected activated.

The process repeated.

A second bypass was closed.

Another controlled amount of pressure moved into the holding array.

Central compensated through the main loop and stabilization feed, but with fewer internal routes remaining, the response became easier to predict.

By the third transfer, the team could see exactly how much the principal loop brightened before the rift feed adjusted.

Xuanyin used that relationship to begin reducing the tower's internal circulation.

The work demanded constant attention from every team. When one holding plate began heating beyond its expected range, Marephoros cultivators cooled the surrounding material instead of the inscription itself, allowing heat to bleed outward without disrupting the pressure stored inside. Pyrelith cultivators stood by at several mechanical housings where contracting metal had begun gripping the locking assemblies too tightly, warming those sections just enough for the formation specialists to keep them adjustable.

Veridian roots held cracked foundation stone in place beneath two of the temporary arrays after repeated pressure changes widened old fractures through the floor.

Celestara runners continued carrying physical readings between the outer teams whenever the communication formations flickered.

Nothing about the process was dramatic, yet the tension inside the chamber increased as Central became simpler. With every removed route, the surviving lines mattered more.

Eventually only one temporary bypass remained alongside the final major loop and the direct stabilization feed.

The holding arrays were full.

The temporary balancing formation was still functioning.

Xuanyin had the teams stop.

Nobody questioned it.

The tower completed another cycle.

Pressure entered from the rift.

Part of it passed through the final loop.

A smaller portion reached the balancing formation.

The rest returned through the stabilization feed.

Xuanyin watched the sequence several times before speaking again.

"We can separate the last loop."

The formation elder looked toward the stabilization feed.

"And the load?"

"We don't remove the feed yet. Once the loop is gone, the temporary balancing array holds the transition long enough for us to isolate Central from the feed directly."

That was the dangerous part.

Until now, every removal had left Central with some version of its original redundancy.

The last loop would not.

Haotian moved toward the exposed housing where the principal route had already been opened along one side. The specialists had prepared the isolation plates in advance, but none had been placed while the line still carried full pressure.

"Start the transfer," Xuanyin said.

The remaining bypass opened fully.

Pressure moved out of the loop.

The temporary balancing formation brightened.

So did the direct rift feed.

The main loop dimmed, though much more slowly than the earlier ones.

The formation elder watched the measuring rods instead of the light.

"Still carrying."

Xuanyin adjusted the bypass.

The loop weakened further.

The stabilization feed climbed.

A second specialist reported that the temporary balancing formation had reached the upper range they had tested safely.

Xuanyin stopped increasing the transfer.

For several moments everything remained where it was.

Haotian could feel the tower vibrating beneath the floor, the overlapping hum now reduced to only a few distinct rhythms.

The final loop still carried enough pressure that separating it would be reckless.

Xuanyin altered something in the northern holding array.

One of the stored sections opened into the remaining bypass and accepted a reverse flow.

The change lowered pressure through the principal loop by another small amount.

The elder checked again.

"Almost empty."

They waited through one more cycle.

When the line remained dim even as the rift feed surged, Xuanyin gave the order.

The isolation plates were placed.

The first locked cleanly.

The second took longer because the housing had warped under repeated pressure changes, forcing the Pyrelith specialist to warm the outer bracket while the Marephoros cultivator kept the adjacent inscription cool enough to remain stable.

Once the plate seated fully, the loop was trapped between two controlled barriers.

The elder removed the first locking assembly.

Nothing shifted.

He removed the second.

The main loop disappeared from Xuanyin's projection.

Central continued running.

For a moment, almost all of its remaining function existed through the temporary balancing formation, the final bypass, the filled holding arrays, and the direct connection to the main rift.

They had reduced the entire tower to a system that no longer possessed redundancy.

Now they could disconnect it.

The last bypass went first.

Its pressure was transferred into the balancing formation, then closed.

The holding arrays were isolated one after another so their stored energy could not return unexpectedly into the network. Specialists marked each one for later dismantling but did not discharge them yet.

That left only the temporary balancing formation and the stabilization feed.

Xuanyin had the balancing array weakened gradually instead of shutting it off. As its influence declined, the direct feed brightened harder, attempting to compensate for the loss of the tower's internal regulation.

The increase propagated through the foundation.

Above them, Central's exterior inscriptions brightened all at once.

Several fighters in the courtyard looked up.

Haotian did too.

The tower had never appeared more active during the entire dismantling.

Then the pressure stopped climbing.

Xuanyin had expected the response.

"Hold everything."

Nobody touched the feed.

The temporary balancing formation remained at low output while Central pushed almost its entire remaining function through the direct route to the rift.

They waited until the readings stabilized there.

Only then did Xuanyin tell the specialists to isolate the feed.

Unlike the earlier loops, the connection could not simply be trapped between two plates. It carried pressure in both directions, so the teams had prepared a paired isolation structure around it, one side designed to stop Central from sending anything outward and the other to prevent the rift-side pressure from surging backward into the tower when the connection disappeared.

The first half closed.

Central's exterior lights flickered.

The second half remained open long enough for the last internal pressure to move toward the rift.

The balancing formation dimmed almost completely.

"Now," Xuanyin said.

The second isolation structure closed.

The stabilization feed went dark.

For several breaths, Central remained lit.

Stored energy still occupied its inscriptions, and the change worked through the tower from the foundation upward rather than erasing everything at once. The lowest formation bands faded first, their dark-red glow draining away section by section until the markings around the base became ordinary engraved metal and stone. Higher patterns continued cycling for a little longer, but with no active network beneath them, each sequence weakened on the next pass.

Across the district, the remaining tower-supported distortions began relaxing with them.

A street east of Central that had remained slightly compressed throughout the operation lengthened toward its ordinary measurement slowly enough that the formation specialists standing beside it could watch the discrepancy disappear from their instruments. The broad concealment hanging over two nearby rooftops thinned until smoke, damaged tiles, and the fighters moving between them became visible without any cultivation technique. Communication arrays that had continued producing delayed responses near the tower suddenly began returning signals at the same rate as those farther away.

The coalition did not cheer.

Too many teams were still working, too many wounded were being treated, and nobody yet knew what disconnecting the final tower had done to the main rift.

The change was nevertheless felt throughout the inner district.

For the first time since the assault on Central began, a fighter looking down an avenue could trust that the distance he saw was the distance he would have to cross.

Scouts no longer needed repeated measurements before moving from one roof to another.

Formation specialists comparing maps stopped receiving contradictory results from the same street.

Central's uppermost inscriptions dimmed last.

One ring remained faintly visible near the top of the tower for several breaths after everything beneath it had gone dark, then drained away until only the physical structure remained against the sky.

Xuanyin continued watching the readings.

Haotian waited beside the now-dark stabilization feed.

The formation elder beside him did the same.

Nobody treated the visual change as confirmation.

Only after the tower completed several cycles without producing a single new reading did Xuanyin finally speak through the array.

"Central is offline."

Haotian looked toward the darkened conduit beneath his feet.

The third tower had been disconnected without collapsing, exploding, or sending its stored pressure through the district.

The method had worked.

A deeper vibration rolled through the ground before anyone had time to begin dismantling the temporary formations.

Haotian felt it through his boots first.

The sound followed a moment later, low enough that it seemed to come from beneath the entire inner district rather than from any one structure.

Several measuring rods around the foundation began trembling.

Xuanyin's projection changed.

The pressure lines that had ended at Central disappeared.

Far beyond the tower, the main rift no longer had anywhere else to send its load.

The vibration beneath Central did not fade after the first pulse.

It returned several breaths later, stronger and less regular, traveling through the exposed foundation in a way none of the tower's earlier formation cycles had produced. The measuring rods around the disconnected stabilization feed rattled against their brackets, and one of the temporary plates near the western wall shifted far enough across the stone that a formation specialist had to catch it before it scraped into another array. Nobody tried reconnecting anything. Xuanyin had already confirmed Central was offline, and forcing the tower back into the network without understanding what had changed at the rift would only restore a system they had spent hours dismantling.

Haotian left the foundation chamber as soon as the next vibration began.

The effect was easier to understand aboveground, though no less concerning. Loose dust drifted from the roofs around Central, and several piles of broken masonry shifted against the paving as the low movement passed beneath the district. Fighters who had been checking recently cleared buildings stopped and looked toward the north, where the main rift lay beyond the final line of structures. They could not see the opening itself from every street, but the light above it had already changed enough to cast irregular illumination against the smoke hanging over that part of the city.

During the assault, the rift's glow had followed a rhythm imposed by the three towers. It brightened and dimmed through recognizable phases as West, South, and Central absorbed, redirected, and returned pressure through the network. That repetition had been present for so long that most of the coalition had stopped noticing it unless the rhythm changed.

Now there was no rhythm.

The light strengthened unexpectedly, remained bright for several breaths, then contracted so sharply that the surrounding sky darkened before another pulse pushed outward from the same point. A second expansion followed before the first had fully settled. The intervals between them were uneven.

Haotian crossed the courtyard toward the northern street while formation teams emerged behind him carrying portable measuring plates rather than weapons. Several nearby mixed teams fell into motion as well, but he signaled them to remain spread out instead of crowding toward the rift. The fighting around Central had diminished enough that the inner streets could support the movement, yet nobody knew how much of the remaining district might be affected if the instability continued spreading.

The first direct report came from a Celestara scout already above the northern rooftops.

"The edge is moving."

Xuanyin answered through the communication formation. "How much?"

The scout did not immediately give a number.

"It isn't moving evenly."

That brought Haotian's attention back to the projection forming beside him.

Xuanyin pulled readings from several surviving observation arrays, but the data no longer aligned cleanly with the patterns used while the towers remained connected. One side of the rift appeared to be contracting while another expanded, and the opening's overall area changed less than the movement along its boundary suggested. The shape was no longer holding the stable geometry the towers had maintained.

Haotian continued north.

The closer he came, the more obvious the physical effects became. A line of formation stakes driven into the pavement near one of the previous defensive positions had begun vibrating independently of the ground. Their metal shafts leaned toward the rift during one surge, returned upright as the pressure receded, then tilted again in a slightly different direction during the next. Scraps of cloth, splintered wood, and loose fragments of stone along the street behaved the same way. Nothing was being pulled steadily toward the opening. The direction changed with each fluctuation.

A chunk of broken roof tile slid several inches north.

The next pulse made it rotate in place.

The one after that pushed it sideways into the gutter.

The main rift came fully into view beyond the last broad avenue.

It hung above a torn section of the district where buildings had long since been cleared or destroyed around its perimeter, leaving a wide expanse of fractured paving and exposed earth beneath it. The opening itself was enormous compared with any of the smaller fractures the coalition had closed during the campaign. Its interior remained too dark to read as ordinary distance, but bands of distorted light moved along the boundary where Blue Sphere World met whatever lay beyond.

That boundary was no longer smooth.

The western edge bulged outward, held there briefly, then pulled inward while the upper portion widened. A section near the lower right contracted so far that the gap narrowed visibly before pressure shifted elsewhere and reopened it. Each change tugged at the surrounding air and ground differently.

One of the old formation anchors near the perimeter tore free.

It did not fly toward the rift. The iron spike dragged sideways through several feet of cracked paving before the pressure changed again and threw it onto its side.

Haotian slowed well before reaching the old anchor line.

"Nobody crosses the outer markers."

The order moved through the nearby teams.

Formation specialists stopped behind the surviving perimeter rather than approaching the edge with the measuring equipment. Several had worked much closer to the rift during earlier operations, but the ground they had trusted then was no longer behaving the same way.

Xuanyin's projection shifted beside Haotian.

"The towers are gone from the load path."

He continued watching the rift while she worked.

"Completely?"

"Yes. West and South were already isolated. Central was the last route capable of taking meaningful pressure from the main opening."

Another surge rolled outward.

This one was stronger.

The edge of the rift expanded several paces along its upper side while the lower boundary contracted. The resulting distortion crossed the ground beneath it and cracked one of the remaining stone platforms near the perimeter. The fracture started beneath the center of the slab, spread toward both ends, and stopped when the pressure changed again.

Haotian looked toward the broken platform.

"So everything the towers were absorbing stays here now."

"Not exactly everything." Xuanyin adjusted the readings again. "The rift is still releasing and taking pressure through the connection itself. What's gone is the external system that was smoothing those changes before they reached the boundary."

Haotian understood the difference.

The towers had never been the source of the rift. They had been regulators built around it, allowing an unstable connection to behave as though it were stable enough to remain open indefinitely. With all three removed, the connection still existed, but the fluctuations it produced had nowhere else to be distributed before reaching Blue Sphere World.

The coalition had finally isolated what they wanted to close.

They had also removed the machinery that kept it predictable.

A formation elder reached Haotian with two younger specialists carrying a broad measuring frame between them. They stopped behind the old perimeter markers and set the frame on the ground without activating it.

"Can we read the cycling directly now?" Haotian asked.

The elder looked toward Xuanyin's projection before answering. "We can read more of it. I wouldn't call it cycling anymore."

He activated the frame.

Several thin lines of light rose from the engraved surface and pointed toward different regions of the rift boundary. The readings stabilized for less than two breaths before one line jerked sharply to the right.

The elder adjusted the instrument.

Another changed.

He stopped touching it.

"That isn't the frame."

Xuanyin was already receiving the same movement from another array farther east.

The two measurements did not contradict each other.

The boundary itself had changed between them.

A second formation group approached from the opposite side of the street and began setting up another instrument. Haotian let them work while he moved far enough along the perimeter to compare the opening from a different angle. The apparent size changed slightly as he did, but not in the way Xuan Juekong's Space Dao had distorted ordinary distance. There was no cultivator choosing where the relationship changed. The rift's geometry was simply failing to remain fixed.

Behind him, the coalition continued reorganizing around the new problem. Fresh mixed teams replaced fighters who had spent most of the Central assault on the front line, while wounded were moved farther back from the northern district rather than into the recently secured structures closest to the rift. Celestara scouts shifted into wider circuits above the perimeter, careful not to cross directly over the opening. Veridian cultivators began checking the ground between the surviving buildings for fractures that might threaten formation placement later.

Haotian saw Liora kneel beside one such crack farther east and send thin roots through the soil on either side instead of across it. The growth held the loose earth together without entering the unstable region nearer the rift, and the cultivators around her began marking which portions of the ground remained physically reliable enough to support larger anchors.

The operation was already changing shape before anyone had formally planned it.

That was necessary.

The rift did not care whether the coalition was ready.

Another fluctuation passed through the boundary, stronger near the western side this time. Several Celestara scouts gained altitude immediately as the air beneath them twisted. One was caught along the edge of the disturbance and dropped several feet before regaining control, not because his wings failed but because the volume of space beneath him seemed to compress and release unevenly.

He withdrew farther.

Haotian watched until the scout stabilized.

"Tianlan."

His son was already moving toward him from the southern street with the two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons above the rooftops. The third remained behind with the healers, still unable to fly after the injury it had suffered during the earlier tower fighting. Tianlan reached the old perimeter and looked toward the main rift before Haotian spoke.

"Keep them high and outside the boundary. I need changes around the whole perimeter, not a closer look."

Tianlan nodded and sent the two Falcons in opposite directions.

The birds climbed rather than diving toward the opening, one taking the eastern arc and the other the western. Their bonded senses gave Tianlan two moving perspectives of the rift without forcing either Falcon into the unstable air directly above it. Even from the ground, the strain showed quickly in his expression as different horizons and changing distances entered the bond at once.

Haotian noticed.

"Don't hold both views continuously."

"I know."

Tianlan let one connection recede and concentrated on the western Falcon while the eastern continued its circuit independently. A few breaths later he switched.

The reports came in fragments as he built a complete picture.

The northern edge was moving less than the west.

The eastern boundary showed repeated smaller contractions.

The upper portion expanded most strongly whenever the lower section compressed.

Nothing suggested a simple uniform collapse.

Xuanyin incorporated the observations into the projection.

"It's compensating across the opening."

Haotian looked toward her.

"When one side contracts, another expands."

"Usually. Not perfectly."

That last qualification mattered.

If the rift were merely redistributing a fixed amount of distortion around its boundary, they could build a method around that balance. Instead, the total pressure itself was changing from one fluctuation to the next. Some contractions were followed by expansions of nearly equal magnitude. Others produced more movement elsewhere than the original change should have required.

The opening was becoming less stable with time.

Haotian asked the question everyone near the projection needed answered.

"Can you tell how long it stays manageable?"

Xuanyin did not pretend she could.

"No. The fluctuations are increasing, but I don't have enough cycles under this configuration to predict where that leads."

The formation elder beside them looked over the latest readings.

"We could watch longer."

Xuanyin shook her head.

"That gives us more data while the system gets worse."

Haotian kept his eyes on the rift.

Waiting indefinitely would not make the problem safer. Rushing into a closure without understanding the boundary would not either.

They needed enough information to act before instability took the decision away from them.

"Then we map what it's doing now," he said. "Not what the towers made it do."

The instruction changed the purpose of every formation array around the perimeter.

Xuanyin stopped comparing the new readings against the old tower rhythm and began building an entirely separate map. Each observation point was assigned one section of the boundary. Rather than trying to predict the whole rift at once, the teams recorded local contraction, expansion, directional pressure, and ground response independently before sending the results back to her.

The first several cycles produced a pattern complicated enough that Haotian could see why the towers had required so much redundancy.

Pressure did not move only around the visible rim.

Sometimes an expansion along the eastern side corresponded to a contraction opposite it. Other times the entire visible boundary widened slightly while the disturbance in the surrounding ground decreased, as though part of the pressure had moved somewhere the external instruments could not observe. On the next cycle, the reverse happened. The opening changed very little while the formation stakes around its southern perimeter vibrated hard enough to bend one mounting bracket.

They were not dealing with a flat tear in space.

Whatever connected Blue Sphere World to the other side extended through a structure the external map could only partially describe.

Haotian filed that observation away without trying to solve it yet.

The immediate task remained stabilizing the boundary well enough to approach it.

Another low vibration traveled beneath the district. This time nobody mistook it for Central. The tower behind them remained dark, its formations silent.

Every measuring array around the rift responded at once.

The western edge expanded.

The lower boundary contracted.

The eastern side twisted inward instead of merely shrinking, changing the shape of the opening by enough that several specialists stepped back from their instruments.

Then the movement settled.

Not completely.

Enough for the readings to become usable again.

Haotian looked over the perimeter where coalition teams were already marking stable ground, establishing observation points, and clearing debris from places likely to support new formation anchors.

They had spent the tower assaults cutting away everything that kept the main rift open.

Now nothing stood between them and the thing itself.

That had been the objective from the beginning.

Seeing it isolated made clear how much work remained before isolation became closure.
