When Gajeel came back through the guild entrance, he looked like he had lost a fight with a storm.
His clothes were torn in several places. Burns marked his arms and chest, the distinctive kind that came from lightning. He was walking, but only just, each step deliberate and careful, like he was deciding in real time whether his legs were going to cooperate.
The guild members noticed. Nobody moved toward him.
They had accepted him into the guild. That was not the same as trusting him. Most of them still kept a measured distance from this particular individual, and watching him walk in looking like wreckage was not enough to change that.
Juvia was the exception.
She came out from under the table so suddenly that Lucy knocked her drink over.
"Gajeel, what happened?" She stepped in front of him, her face tight with worry. She had been right there during the chaos earlier. She knew perfectly well that Mr. Chase had not hit him anywhere near this hard. "How did you end up like this just from going outside?"
"Nothing happened."
His voice came out rough and low, barely there. He moved past her with heavy steps, eyes half open, heading for the request board. He pushed aside the guild's NPC worker Nob without ceremony, scanned the posted jobs quickly, pulled one off the board, and brought it to Mira at the bar.
"I'll take this one."
Mira looked at the request slip, then looked at him. Her brow pulled in.
"You're in no condition to go out on a job right now. You need to be treated first."
"It's a small injury."
There was nothing small about it. The arrogance he had performed on stage half an hour ago was completely gone. What was left sounded exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with volume.
"I won't register this." Mira shook her head, firm about it. "The guild master agreed to have you here. That makes you a member. I can't send a member out looking like this."
The request in his hand was a magic class explanation job. Safe work, more suited to someone like Lucy. But that wasn't the point.
Gajeel did not argue. He folded the request slip carefully, put it away, and turned for the entrance.
He had told her. That was sufficient. Following instructions beyond that was not something he did.
Mira came around from behind the bar, already moving to stop him, when Chase spoke from across the room.
"Let him go, Mira."
She stopped.
Everyone else who had watched Gajeel go out with Shadow Gear had no idea what had happened out there. Chase did. The lightning burns told him everything he needed to know. Laxus had been the one to find them.
Gajeel glanced back at Chase with something that might have been gratitude, then walked out through the entrance while Juvia called after him.
Mira watched him go. The worry on her face did not leave.
Natsu, Lucy, and the others sat with the same question: how had Gajeel, who had been performing an enthusiastic original composition at full volume thirty minutes ago, come back looking like he had been struck by an actual thunderstorm?
The answer came through the door shortly after.
Levy, Jet, and Droy came in together. Levy looked shaken. Jet's jaw was set hard. Droy was struggling to put his expression somewhere neutral and failing.
"It's our fault," Jet said.
He explained it quietly, without decoration. Since they were going to be guild members together now, he and Droy had gone to find Gajeel. They wanted to settle things directly, a proper fight with a clear end, no lingering bad blood over the sneak attack and the guild destruction. Just deal with it and move on.
That had been the plan.
"In the middle of it, Laxus showed up." Jet's voice was even. "He said the guild master would accept anyone off the street, and it made him look like a fool. Then he attacked Gajeel."
Nobody said anything for a moment.
"That guy really does have rotten luck," Natsu muttered. He had been on the receiving end of Laxus enough times to know how that felt.
"Gajeel's not that far behind Natsu in raw strength," Gray said. "Laxus still went that far?"
Droy shook his head slowly.
"He wasn't fighting back." His expression was complicated, like he was still working out how to feel about it. "He seemed like he genuinely wanted to be here with us. So he just took it."
"Levy said something from the side," Jet continued. His hands were in fists at his waist. "Just one word. Laxus turned the lightning on her."
He stopped there. He did not need to say the next part.
"Gajeel put himself between them. All of it hit him instead." Jet's teeth were tight. "I'm fast. That's my whole thing. And I still wouldn't have gotten to her in time."
The room absorbed that quietly.
Then it stopped being quiet.
"Laxus is completely out of control." Mira's voice was calm, but the calm was the kind that came from holding something very hot. Even she, who had maintained the basic wariness she felt toward Gajeel, knew exactly where the line was. Levy was family. Had been since they were children.
"I'm going to find him."
Erza put down her fork. She stood up without looking around to check if anyone was following. Her eyes had gone to a place that did not invite conversation.
Mira looked at Chase, still in his seat, still not moving, and turned back toward the door.
"I'll come with you."
On its own she trusted herself to handle Laxus. What she was less comfortable with was letting Erza face someone that dangerous alone. Laxus's power was not something to take lightly, guild master's grandson or not. Guild master's grandson made it worse, if anything.
"We're coming too." Natsu and Gray were already behind them.
"Wait." Lucy's voice went up. "Shouldn't someone tell the guild master first?"
The atmosphere had shifted fast and she had not quite caught up. She did not know Laxus the way the others did. She did not know that Makarov had already tried, more times than anyone could count, to reach him through conversation.
The other members, Levy's team, several others scattered around the hall, stood still with the look of people watching something happen that they could not predict the end of.
Mira and Erza kept walking.
They were nearly at the door when Chase's voice came from behind them, unhurried.
"He's not in the guild. If you go looking now, you won't find him."
They both stopped.
Natsu turned back with fury still running hot across his face. "I'll track his scent. I'll find him wherever he is."
"And then what?" Chase said. "Can you beat Laxus?"
Natsu's jaw shifted. He looked at the floor.
He was not someone who backed down from a fight on principle. He was also not someone who lied to himself about the outcome of a fight he had already lost before.
"We have Mira and Erza both," Gray said. He sounded certain about it. "That's not nothing."
Chase set his teacup down.
"If Laxus refuses to hear anything," he said, "what exactly are the two of you planning to do when you find him?"
His magic power surfaced, dark gold and steady, not threatening, just present.
He didn't say it cruelly. He said it because it was the actual question. Setting aside whether the two of them together could physically stop a fully committed Laxus, there was something else to consider. Mira and Erza were not the type to strike without restraint against someone they had watched grow up in the same hall. Even furious, even justified, they would hesitate at the moment it mattered. They would hold back. And Laxus, in the state he was in, would not.
The result of that would not be a resolution. It would be a bigger problem.
The light in Mira's eyes went somewhere quieter. Erza said nothing.
The guild hall sat still.
"This is the last time."
Chase withdrew the magic pressure. His voice came out low and controlled, the anger in it held flat.
"If Laxus keeps this up, I will expel him from the guild. In the guild master's place."
He meant it. Everyone in the room could hear that he meant it.
He knew what Laxus was going to become. He knew what the civil war would cost him and give him. The moment when a stubborn, misdirected person finally looks at what he has done and understands it: that moment mattered, and it was coming. But getting there required the situation to play out the way it needed to play out.
What it did not require was Erza and Mira getting seriously hurt by someone they still cared about, over a confrontation that would not solve anything today.
"Chase."
Mira's fingers found the hem of her dress and held it. She looked at him.
She had moved so fast, had not listened to Lucy's suggestion, had not thought to go to Makarov first, partly because she had been afraid of exactly this. If Chase got to Laxus before anyone else did, those two would not stop at a warning. They would not stop until one of them could not continue. And unlike Natsu and Gajeel's scuffles, this one could end somewhere that no one came back from.
She did not want that. Even now. Even angry.
Natsu was staring at Chase with an expression he rarely wore. The word "expel" had landed on him strangely. Even when Laxus had turned the entire guild against itself, had threatened lives, had done everything wrong a person could do while still technically being in the building, Natsu had still called him a companion. A terrible one, a maddening one, but still that.
Hearing Chase say it this plainly was different.
The confrontation that had nearly walked out the door settled back into the room.
***
Dusk came in slowly over Magnolia. The river caught the last of the sun's color and held it, quiet and unhurried.
Chase walked with Mira and Dark Magician Girl along the empty street toward the new house. The building had been finished for everything practical. The remaining soft furnishings were minor. It was ready.
The boatman passing on the river spotted them and called out his usual warning, advising the two young women at Chase's side to keep a healthy distance from this well-known source of disruption.
He gave no sign of recognizing Mira, despite the fact that she was one of the most recognizable people in Magnolia.
Mira found this genuinely annoying.
"Master! Is this really it?!"
Dark Magician Girl had been kept away from the construction site through most of the process. She stood looking up at the three-story building with its backyard and terrace, wide-eyed.
"The gray and white together on the exterior wall," Mira said, eyes moving over the facade. Her expression had relaxed into something warm and genuinely pleased. "That came out well." She turned to Chase. "Let's go in."
Chase produced the key and unlocked the front door, which was reinforced well past standard specifications. The reasons for that were specific and involved someone who had a habit of using their feet to knock.
The entrance opened onto a clean, cool smell, nothing chemical about it. Mage incense bags set into the walls had done their work on the air. Past the entryway the living room opened up, bright and spacious, the afternoon light moving through it comfortably.
The interior did not look like the rest of Magnolia. Medieval architecture dominated most of the city. This was different, the ceilings, the light fittings, the furniture, all of it leaning toward something cleaner and more considered. Chase had spent enough time in civil engineering in another life to know what made a space actually livable, and he had worked those instincts into Mira's design drawings at every stage.
Mira took Dark Magician Girl by the arm and began a full tour of the building, walking her through each room with the energy of someone presenting a project she was proud of, explaining which choices had been hers at every turn.
Chase sat on the mahogany sofa and put the kettle on.
He had barely gotten through his first cup when the front door, which he had left slightly open, moved.
Lucy's head appeared in the gap. She saw Chase, slipped inside, got as far as the living room, and stopped.
"This is incredible. Chase-san, is this really your house?"
Her rental apartment was directly across the street. She had watched the construction from her window for weeks and been waiting for an excuse to get inside.
She had not come alone. That much was obvious without checking.
Happy flew in right behind her. Natsu followed with his usual complete absence of ceremony. Gray was already shirtless, which was just how he was. Erza came in last, looking around with the systematic attention she gave to unfamiliar spaces.
Where Lucy had at least paused at the entrance, the other four treated the building the way they treated most places, as territory they had already decided was theirs, touching walls, opening doors, commenting as they went.
"Chase." Natsu planted himself in the middle of the living room with his arms crossed and a critical expression. "There's no fireplace. Lucy's place at least has a fireplace for warmth. What's the point of a house without a fireplace?"
"There's underfloor heating, Natsu."
Mira and Dark Magician Girl came down the stairs at the noise.
Natsu considered this information.
"Floor heating isn't something you can eat." He remained unconvinced.
Thick-skinned as he was, he missed the fact that the response had come from Mira, not Chase.
"Mira?" Lucy turned, startled. "You're here too?"
Happy pulled his head out of the refrigerator, turned around with his paws over his mouth and a particular expression.
"Something is happening here!"
"Mi, Mi, Mi, Mira," Erza began, her face going noticeably red, a faint steam appearing somewhere around her ears. She appeared to have constructed a scenario in her head and was having difficulty with it. Her speech froze partway through.
"I helped design the house a while back," Mira said pleasantly. "I came to check that everything was done correctly."
Chase, pouring tea: he was fairly certain that the visit had been her suggestion rather than his invitation, but this was not something he said out loud.
"Mira designed this?" Erza recovered and looked around again, processing the information. "That explains why it's quite good." She rested her chin in her hand. "Though something is missing." She thought about it. "A statue. Custom made, for the living room. That would complete it."
Chase looked at her.
He did not speak.
He filed the suggestion in the same place he filed Mira's earlier idea about putting small Q-version figurines on the roof. He had not known, before moving in with these people, that Fairy Tail's S-Class female mages shared this particular type of creative vision.
A splash of water came from down the hall.
They all looked.
The bathroom door was open. Gray was already in the bathtub, fully reclined, the steam rising around him in a comfortable cloud.
"The bathtub is excellent," he called out. "Mira has good taste."
"HOW." Lucy stared at him. "How are you already in the bathtub. The bathroom door wasn't even labeled. You've been in this building for forty seconds!"
Gray appeared unbothered by the timeline.
"Good instincts," he said, and sank a little lower into the water.
