Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Four Contestants

"Move your hand."

Lin Feng didn't wait for a response.

His sword intent released the moment the words left his mouth — not a warning, not a reminder, a genuine cutting force directed at the hand wrapped around his blade. Sharp. Precise. The kind of focused sword Qi that had carved through Xuanyuan Wei's metal staff like it was paper.

Xuanyuan Zhen felt it immediately.

The sharpness of it was undeniable — a genuine sword cultivator's intent given direction and purpose, pressing against his hand with the clear intention of separating it from his wrist. Under normal circumstances, against a normal opponent, it would have worked.

His circumstances were not normal.

Purple golden Qi rose along his arm without conscious direction — coating skin and bone in a layer of luminescence that the sword Qi pressed against and found unyielding. The sharpness that had bisected a metal staff scraped against that surface and accomplished nothing.

Xuanyuan Zhen looked at his arm. Then at Lin Feng.

"Now I know where your brother's arrogance comes from."

Then his Qi erupted.

Not a technique. Not a formal strike. Just an outward surge of purple golden Qi that hit Lin Feng like a sudden gale — overwhelming in its pressure, indifferent to his resistance. Lin Feng was pushed back three steps before his foundation caught him. He planted his feet. Stopped himself.

Adjusted his grip on his sword.

His face had changed. The arrogance was still there — it lived too deep in him to be displaced by three stumbling steps — but something had joined it now. Sitting behind his eyes, quiet and calculating.

Caution.

The crowd exhaled collectively. Several conversations broke out simultaneously in the gathered rows. The exchange had produced two public showings from Xuanyuan Zhen now — first his physical dominance in his group fight, conducted entirely without Qi. Now this. A casual Qi eruption that sent a second stage Foundation Establishment sword cultivator stumbling.

He hadn't even used a technique.

The three sect elders exchanged glances that communicated several things without words.

Lin Feng would not let it stand.

He raised his sword and something shifted in the air around him — a sharpening, a focusing, the atmosphere itself seeming to align with the intention behind the blade. When he spoke his voice carried the absolute certainty of someone who had never seriously entertained the possibility of losing.

"Insignificant. I'll cut you down where you stand."

He moved.

The force behind it was categorically different from what he'd directed at Xuanyuan Wei. That had been demonstration. This was intent to end. His sword Qi blazed outward in a concentrated wave, his second stage Foundation Establishment cultivation fully expressed, the sword intent that had so casually dismantled a metal staff now compressed into something with genuine killing weight behind it.

Xuanyuan Zhen didn't retreat.

Something lit in his eyes — not anger, not alarm. Interest. The clean focused interest of someone who had been waiting to take the measure of something and had finally been given the opportunity. This young swordsman was genuinely powerful. His sword intent was real, his cultivation solid, his technique refined beyond what his age suggested.

He wanted to see exactly how powerful.

He stepped forward to meet the strike.

Then an overwhelming pressure descended.

It came from three directions simultaneously — measured, deliberate, and absolute. Three distinct auras pressing down on the exchange ground like three mountains choosing to occupy the same space. The gathered crowd felt it as a sudden heaviness in the air, an instinctive urge to lower their heads without understanding why. Even the patriarchs were not exempt.

The sect elders of War God Sect, Firmament Dao Sect, and Origin Sword Sect had risen from their seats.

No words. No commands. Just presence — the cultivational weight of three individuals who existed on a completely different plane from anyone currently standing on that exchange ground, making themselves felt with the precise minimum of force required to communicate one clear message.

This ends here.

Lin Feng's sword arm stopped. Every muscle in his body understood the instruction before his mind finished processing it. He was talented. He was genuinely powerful for his age and cultivation level. He was not someone who could ignore the combined pressure of three sect elders without consequences he wasn't prepared to accept.

Xuanyuan Zhen felt it too. The pressure against his own forward momentum was like stepping into deep water — not painful, not aggressive, just suddenly and completely resistant to further progress.

He stopped.

The two of them stood there for a moment — sword raised, Qi primed, the gap between them containing everything that hadn't been allowed to happen — and then, with the wordless acknowledgment of people who understood the rules of the world they inhabited, stepped back.

The exchange had its rules. The rules had been enforced.

Xuanyuan Zhen turned from Lin Feng without ceremony. Crossed to where Xuanyuan Wei had been helped to the edge of the ground by two clan members, assessed the damage with a quick look, and then crouched slightly.

"Get on."

Wei looked at him for a moment — bloodied, staff in two pieces somewhere on the ground behind them, chest wound wrapped hastily in cloth. Then he shifted his weight onto Xuanyuan Zhen's back without argument.

Xuanyuan Zhen straightened and carried him away from the exchange ground.

He didn't look back at Lin Feng.

Lin Feng watched him go. The killing intent behind his eyes hadn't moved. Hadn't diminished. It had simply found somewhere to wait.

---

The semifinal pairings were announced as the exchange ground was cleared and the crowd resettled.

Four contestants remained.

Lin Feng. Xuanyuan Rou'er. Yan Di. Xuanyuan Zhen.

The announcement of the pairings drew an audible reaction from the gathered crowd — not the pairing anyone had anticipated, not the collision the tension of the last few minutes had seemed to be building toward.

Xuanyuan Zhen versus Yan Di.

Lin Feng versus Xuanyuan Rou'er.

Murmurs moved through the crowd. Those who had been watching carefully understood immediately what the pairings meant — the confrontation between Xuanyuan Zhen and Lin Feng, the one the exchange ground had been holding its breath for since the moment purple golden Qi had sent the city lord's son stumbling backward, had been deferred. Postponed to the final if both won their respective semifinals.

If.

Yan Di was not someone to dismiss. His Flame Demon Body radiated heat even at rest, his Fiery Serpent Technique having dismantled his group opponents with efficient brutality. First among his clan's representatives. Genuinely dangerous.

Xuanyuan Rou'er's Five Elements Body had moved through her own group with ease.

Neither could be underestimated.

The tension that had built during the confrontation at the exchange ground didn't dissipate with the pairing announcement. It redistributed — spreading across four separate calculations, four sets of eyes reading four opponents, the crowd running its own assessments of what the semifinals and potential final might produce.

Lin Feng stood apart from the others, sword sheathed, expression composed.

His killing intent remained exactly where he'd left it.

Waiting.
