The brutal crack of a mana shield still rang in Zeke's ears. He lay sprawled on the mossy ground, ribs screaming, every breath a shallow, painful gasp. Above him, Darius was a desperate blur of motion, his blade flashing against the tide of Wretches that swarmed in the wake of the shield's collapse. The air itself seemed to curdle around them, thick with the Wraith's oppressive cold, suffocating their will.
The Wraith hovered above, a malevolent silhouette against the dim forest light, its shadowy tendrils weaving and striking with chilling precision. One lashed out, slamming into Darius's side with a sickening thud that sent him stumbling back, his arm dropping momentarily. A Wretch immediately capitalized, leaping for his throat.
Zeke saw it all through a haze of pain. This is it, a cold, quiet voice whispered in his mind. This is how it ends. He tried to push himself up, but his body felt heavy, uncooperative, every muscle screaming in protest. Despair, a crushing, insidious weight, threatened to pull him under. He saw the Wretches closing in on Darius, its jagged teeth glinting, and a surge of helpless fury, hot and sharp, pierced through his weariness. He wouldn't let them fall. Not here. Not now.
He focused, pushing against the pain, forcing his arms to move. He had to reach his staff. He had to fight.
Just as the Wretch snapped within inches of Darius's face, a sudden, sharp burst of static crackled through Zeke's comm unit. It was faint, distorted by the chaos, but distinct enough to be heard.
A voice, urgent and precise, pierced the cold air.
"Zeke! Can you hear me?!" It was Tala's voice, sharp with an intensity that pulled him from the edge of the abyss. "We are nearly there, how long can you hold on?"
Zeke gasped, managing to roll onto his side, his hand closing around the familiar hilt of his sword. He didn't have the strength to reply, but the mere sound of her voice, so unexpectedly clear and calm amidst the battle, was a burst of energy.
"Wraiths are strong. But not that strong, you have to deal with the wretches first otherwise they will surround you" Tala's voice continued, cutting through the static, a beacon in the storm. "Their bodys aren't strong! They're scared of fire! use it the grass, trees anything that can catch alight try and slow them down!"
Zeke's mind latched onto the word fire. He turned to his group, chaos, but they are still fighting. "Use fire! Everyone try to stop the flood of wretches so we can focus on defending the wraiths attacks"
Darius, still fending off the relentless Wretches, heard Zeke's words . His eyes widened, a flicker of comprehension replacing the raw panic. His own blade beginning to glow faintly with a reddish hue. He lunged, not with a precise cut, but with a wide, sweeping arc, his blade slicing through the air leaving a trail of flames that fell to the floor, lighting up the undergrowth.
The sudden burst of fire, though small, was an unexpected shock. The Wretches shrieked, a higher, more piercing sound than before, recoiling from the heat. Two of them, caught directly by Darius's flaming blade, didn't just dissolve; they ignited in a puff of smoky ash, a sickly, sweet scent briefly filling the air.
Zeke, fueled by this small victory and Tala's words, pushed himself fully upright. He focused his sword, not on a cleaving strike, but on a concentrated burst of radiant mana, a pure, unadulterated beam of shimmering blue light. He aimed it at the nearest Wretch, and it hit with a crackling hiss, it shrieked and tried to run away but Zeke was faster, he pounced, blade arcing towards the unlucky Wretch.
The Wraith, which had been toying with them, tendrils lashing around as if playing with its food, suddenly paused. Its glowing eyes, previously filled with cold amusement, narrowed. It seemed to notice the unexpected shift in tactics. Its form, normally flickering, solidified for a terrifying moment, radiating palpable anger.
"Clever," the Wraith's voice hissed, louder now, "But futile."
It coiled its shadowy tendrils, drawing them in as if preparing for a truly devastating attack. The very air around them grew heavy, pressing down, as if the forest itself were being squeezed. The remaining Wretches, momentarily disoriented by the fire and mana blasts, began to regroup, their snarls turning from simple hunger to a more primal, furious rage.
Zeke braced himself, sword raised, knowing that whatever came next would be the true test. He exchanged a desperate glance with Darius, who stood grimly at his side, blade still glowing faintly with residual heat. They were still outnumbered, outmatched, but now they had a sliver of hope, a fragile strategy.
The Wraith lunged, not with tendrils, but with its entire shadowy form. It coalesced into a razor-thin spear of darkness, aimed directly at Zeke's chest. It moved with impossible speed, a blur of malevolent intent.
Zeke reacted instinctively, fueled by adrenaline and the sheer will to survive. He brought his sword up, not to block, but to redirect, twisting his body as the shadowy spear closed in.
The Wraith's attack hit the sword with a force that sent a sickening jolt up Zeke's arms. But the surge of mana, combined with his precise deflection, nudging the tip of the shadowy tendril just enough to shave past his side instead of piercing his heart. A searing pain blossomed across his ribs, but he remained standing.
The Wraith recoiled, its form rippling. It had expected to kill the little human, its glowing eyes fixed on Zeke ready to rush back in, when suddenly it froze, a flicker of something akin to surprise crossed its ethreal eyes, then terror. It hovered for a long moment, the oppressive chill of its presence still pressing on the students, but the anger in its form seemed to drain away, replaced by a cold primal fear, its head looking towards the sky, Zeke watched confused, murmurs broke out amongst a few students nearby noticing the anomaly, though all of them were happy for the temporary peace.
Then, without another word, the Wraith turned. Its shadowy form stretched, becoming impossibly thin, and it flowed seamlessly into the deepest parts of the forest, vanishing as if it had never been there. The cold lingered for a few moments, a spectral reminder, before slowly dissipating.
The remaining Wretches, suddenly untethered from the Wraith's controlling presence, wavered. Their eyes lost their feral focus, becoming dull and confused. The nearby army of students jumped at the oppurtunity, what followed was a massacre, bodies of wretches everywhere, the smell of blood a constant reminder of their battle lingered in the air as the sounds of fighting died down.
Silence fell, absolute and profound.
Zeke stood trembling, leaning heavily on his sword, his body screaming in protest, his side throbbing. Darius, equally exhausted, dropped his blade to his side, his chest heaving. They looked at each other, wide-eyed, then slowly around the now empty clearing. They had survived.
Zeke raised a shaking hand to his comm unit. "Tala... we...um... it ran away?" His voice was hoarse, barely a whisper, thick with exhaustion and disbelief. He had no idea how much longer they could have lasted, but Tala's intervention had given them exactly what they needed. Just enough.
As the students began to clean the battle field they saw Zeke looking towards the sky, his eyes narrowed,
" It must've been the academy...so, they are watching us"
The students unaware of his thoughts were just happy that the wraith ran away, they started to patch up their wounds, preparing to set off again.
They only set out this morning, and they already encountered a setback.
