Chapter 26 - The Ash Beneath the Mountain

Sanctara was burning

Not with flame, but with memory.

The Veilshard's resonance had cracked the old foundations of the hidden city. Runes flickered and died. Light reversed. The sky above—once a calm dome of starlight—fractured into an ever-shifting storm, bleeding ancient glyphs across its horizon.

The sanctuary that had hidden from kings, cults, and time itself was dying.

And the storm had a name.

Syaoran

They ran through smoke and silver dust as crystalline towers fell.

Aris led them down hidden stairwells and cursed paths—remnants of her training as a royal assassin

Kira stayed at Syaoran's side, blood dripping from her ribs where the ceiling had nearly crushed her,Teren clutched the relic-case containing the Seal fragment, whispering protective chants through gritted teeth.

But Syaoran heard none of it.

He could only hear her.

The girl in flame. The one he let die.

The one who forgave him in silence.

And now… the Veil remembered it too.

---

They reached the final descent—a bridge of black stone hanging over an abyss of lightless depth.

Cracks zigzagged across it like veins of fire.

At the far side: the Exit Gate, a passage leading out through the ancient war-tunnels and toward the surface of the eastern mountains.

A creature waited for them.

Not cult. Not machine. Not man.

It had once been a guardian of Sanctara.

Now it was something else—twisted by the Veil's death throes, its stone flesh rotted into obsidian glass, runes dripping from its joints like blood.

It opened its mouth.

And screamed with seven voices.

---

Kira threw up a wall of wind. "It's a failed Remnant! Back from the Veil collapse!"

Aris had already moved—vanishing into shadow, blade drawn.

Syaoran didn't hesitate.

He stepped onto the bridge.

The creature charged.

Stone shattered beneath its weight.

And the storm inside Syaoran answered.

---

Lightning tore from his hands—not blue, not gold, but white, pure and searing. It didn't strike like magic. It carved, like a blade from the sky itself.

He ran toward the beast.

And it ran toward him.

When they collided, time seemed to break.

Sparks Screams Ancient runes burned from the stone.

He wasn't fighting with strength.

He was fighting with memory.

Each strike a scar from a life he never asked to remember.

And then—

With a single upward slash, Syaoran drove the lightning blade through the creature's mask.

Its body exploded into light.

The bridge cracked—

And he fell.

---

Kira screamed. "Syaoran!"

He hit the lower slope of the mountain, hard, tumbling into snow and broken ice.

Pain flared...Something cracked in his shoulder.

But he rose.

Because something else was rising beneath the mountain.

He felt it in the marrow of the world.

The Fifth Seal had fully awakened.

---

The others regrouped beside him.

The night had fallen.

But no stars shone above—only a shroud of flickering red clouds.

Teren glanced toward the east, where a distant light rose beyond the peaks.

> "The floating cities are moving

The king's banners are rising"

Aris narrowed her eyes. "He knows"

Kira helped Syaoran stand. "Then we move, Before he reaches the next fragment"

Syaoran looked at the broken peaks behind him—Sanctara gone.

A grave.

A warning.

He turned east.

Toward fire, skyships, and war.

> "We find the next Seal"

> "And we finish what I started lifetimes ago"
