Chapter 17 - A MIDNIGHT ERROR

The absolute silence of the bedroom was heavier than the darkness. They lay side by side, inches apart on the rumpled sheets, the frantic heat of their reunion cooling into something sharp and suffocating. The physical satisfaction was gone, leaving only the crushing weight of reality.

Behind closed eyes, neither of them was at peace.

Nia's Monologue:

What did I justdo? Seven years. Seven years of running, of building walls, of convincing myself that the boy I left behind was just a ghost of my youth. And in less than an hour, he didn't just break through those walls,he demolished them. My body still knows the exact depth of him. My skin still vibrates where he touched me. But he isn't mine anymore. He belongs to a life I have no part of, a world that would chew me up and spit me out. I came back for my mother, not for this. If I let him in now, if I let myself believe that look in his eyes means what it used to, it'll destroy us both. I have to push him away. Before he realizes I never stopped loving him, I have to make him hate me.

Aiden's Monologue:

I'm drowning. For seven years, I forced myself to breathe without her. I built a life. I chose a path. I gave my word to a woman who deserves a man who is fully present. But the second I felt Nia beneath me, the second she cried out my name against the mattress, every vow I've made felt like ashes. She's still the only thing that makes me feel alive. But she's a fortress now. She holds her breath, she hides her eyes, she won't tell me where she's been or why she tore my heart out all those years ago. How can she give me her body so entirely and still keep her soul locked away from me? I want to stay here forever, buried in these sheets, but the sun is going to come up, and the world is waiting to demand the man I promised to be.

The quiet between them grew so dense it was almost physical. Then, breaking the stillness at the exact same moment, they both spoke.

"Are you staying?" Nia whispered.

"Why did you leave?" Aiden asked.

The collision of their unexpected words hung in the air, unanswered and terrifying.

Before either could untangle the mess of what they had just asked, a harsh, blue light cut through the shadows of the room. On the nightstand, Aiden's phone flickered to life. The screen illuminated the dim space, displaying a single notification.

>Elena:Are you still at the hospital, love? Let me know when you're heading back.

The name Elena seemed to bleed the remaining warmth right out of the room.

Nia stared at the glowing screen, her chest tightening as a sickening wave of guilt washed over her. She pulled the sheet higher over her bare shoulders, suddenly feeling entirely exposed.

"Does she know?" Nia's voice was barely a breath, rough and strained. "Does she know where you are?"

Aiden didn't look at the phone. His jaw tensed, a muscle jumping in his cheek as he kept his eyes fixed on the ceiling.

"No. She doesn't."

The bluntness of his answer felt like a physical blow. The reality of what they had done, the deception, the betrayal of a woman Nia didn't even know well of,settled heavily on her chest. She looked away, staring blankly at the wall, the guilt twisting like a knife in her gut.

Without another word, Aiden shifted. The mattress lifted as he swung his legs over the side of the bed. The illusion was completely shattered. Nia watched through a blur of conflicting emotions as he began to dress, the efficient, quiet movements marking the return of his armor. With every piece of clothing he put back on, the passionate lover from moments ago vanished, replaced by the guarded, high-society man he had become.

He buckled his belt, stepped into his shoes, and finally turned to look down at her. He looked exhausted, torn between the duty waiting for him and the unresolved past lying in front of him.

"I wish you could open up to me, Nia," Aiden said, his voice low and laced with a quiet bitterness.

"I wish you would just tell me the truth about why you're back."

Nia couldn't bear the intensity of his stare. She looked away, gripping the sheets tightly. "It's not that simple, Aiden. It never was."

"Then why did we just do this?" he demanded, his tone rising slightly, raw with frustration.

"Why did you let me touch you like that if it's just a mystery I'm not allowed to solve? Why did you come back?"

"This is not the time to argue!" Nia snapped back, her voice cracking as her own panic and defense mechanisms took over. She needed him out of the room before she completely unraveled.

"Just go, Aiden. Go back to your life."

Aiden stared at her for three long, agonizing seconds. The silence returned, bitter and final. Then, he turned on his heel, grabbed his jacket and keys from the chair, and walked out.

The heavy thud of her bedroom door closing was followed shortly by the sound of the front door clicking shut downstairs. A moment later, the low rumble of his car engine faded down the street, leaving Nia in absolute, suffocating solitude.

She let out a shaky breath, burying her face in her hands as the tears she had been holding back finally slipped free.

After a few minutes, she forced herself to sit up, needing to clear the space of the remnants of their intimacy. She reached out to smooth down the wrinkled sheets on his side of the bed, but her fingers brushed against something hard, cold, and metallic.

Nia paused. She pulled back the edge of the duvet.

There, resting against the dark fabric of the mattress, was his watch. A heavy, luxury timepiece which is the very definition of his current life. He had taken it off before he touched her, and in his haste to escape the suffocating guilt of the room, he had forgotten it.

Nia picked it up, the metal cold against her palm. It ticked rhythmically, a tangible reminder that his time belonged to someone else, even though his heart was still trapped in her room.
