Chapter 320 - Chapter 317 — The Second Path

Chapter 317 — The Second Path

After spending some time discussing fleet production, supply logistics, and future preparations with Tony Stark and Dr. Catherine Halsey, Gaius eventually left the workshop.

There was nothing else requiring his attention there for the moment.

The fabrication complex continued operating without interruption, constructing warships while JARVIS and Cortana oversaw every stage of production. Tony and Halsey returned to their research almost immediately after Gaius departed, continuing their work on Covenant technology and the next generation of human vessels.

Time passed.

Morning arrived.

One of Cascade's training grounds had become unusually crowded once again.

Standing at the front was Gaius.

In front of him stood the Spartans.

Or rather, the injured Spartans.

Nearly every one of them bore visible signs of the previous week's training.

Several had arms secured inside casts.

Others had one or both legs wrapped in reinforced medical supports.

A few wore braces around damaged joints.

Several of the more seriously injured Spartans remained on mobile medical beds, unable to stand for extended periods while their bones continued healing.

John was among them.

One of his arms remained inside a cast, while heavy bandages wrapped around portions of his chest and shoulders beneath his training clothes.

The previous training session had pushed every one of them beyond their limits.

Fortunately, UNSC medical technology remained among humanity's greatest strengths. Combined with the Spartans' own enhanced physiology, most of their injuries would heal enough for combat readiness within another week.

Despite their condition...

Every single Spartan had answered Gaius's summons.

Naruto stood off to one side, watching the gathering. He had been called over as well, since he would soon be joining the Spartans in their training.

Gaius looked across the assembled group before speaking.

"Because John has successfully awakened Armament Haki," he said evenly, "I will be adding another training regimen on top of your current training."

The reaction was immediate.

A chorus of groans spread across the field.

Even several Spartans who rarely showed emotion couldn't completely hide their expressions.

Their current routine already pushed them to the point of broken bones nearly every session.

Adding another layer of training sounded less like education and more like punishment.

Naruto couldn't help giving them a sympathetic look.

He understood exactly what they were feeling.

He had been through Gaius's methods himself.

John, reclining on one of the medical beds, raised an eyebrow.

"What is this additional training?"

Every Spartan turned toward Gaius.

Even Dr. Halsey, who had arrived with a datapad to observe the session, looked up from her notes.

Gaius answered calmly.

"We will begin training the second form of Haki."

That immediately changed the atmosphere.

Fred frowned slightly.

"The second form?"

Gaius nodded once.

"Observation Haki."

Several Spartans exchanged glances.

Armament Haki was already familiar to them.

They had watched Naruto use it.

They had witnessed Gaius coat his armor with it countless times.

Observation Haki, however, remained almost completely unknown.

John looked directly at Gaius.

"What exactly does it do?"

Gaius folded his arms.

"It allows one to sense the presence of others."

"It can detect hostile intent."

"It can predict movements."

"It can perceive things beyond normal human senses."

Silence followed.

Then the Spartans' expressions gradually changed.

Interest.

For soldiers who relied on battlefield awareness, reaction speed, and tactical judgment, those abilities were difficult to ignore.

Any enhancement to situational awareness could mean the difference between victory and death.

Especially for Spartans.

Gaius continued.

"The requirements for awakening Observation Haki are different from Armament Haki."

Naruto couldn't stop a small smirk from appearing.

He already knew exactly what Observation Haki training involved.

Well...

At least generally.

He still had no idea how far Gaius intended to take it with the Spartans.

Gaius briefly glanced toward Naruto before returning his attention to everyone else.

"The training will begin next week," he said.

"Once you have recovered enough to move without assistance."

A dry laugh came from the back of the group.

Johnson stood there with his arms folded.

He slowly shook his head.

"Somehow," he said, "I don't think 'move without assistance' is going to be the bar you actually hold them to."

Gaius made no effort to deny it.

Fred, one arm still resting in a sling, studied him carefully.

"How exactly do you train Observation Haki?"

He gestured lightly with his good hand.

"We've seen Armament Haki."

"Exercise until you reach your limit."

"Take the hit."

"Get back up."

"Try again."

"This sounds... different."

"It is," Gaius answered.

Then he stopped.

Nothing more followed.

Kelly narrowed her eyes.

"That's not actually an answer."

"No," Gaius agreed calmly.

"It isn't."

Naruto leaned toward John's medical bed, still wearing that same knowing grin.

"Trust me," he whispered.

"You don't want the answer yet."

"It's better as a surprise."

John stared at him.

"That's not reassuring."

Naruto smiled wider.

"It's really not supposed to be."

Another round of groans spread through the Spartans.

This time they were quieter.

There wasn't much frustration left.

Only tired acceptance.

Whatever Gaius had planned...

They no longer had the energy to argue.

Gaius silently observed them.

Bandages.

Medical braces.

Casts.

Mobile beds.

Bruises.

Fractures.

Every one of them was injured.

Yet not a single Spartan had requested to sit out the next stage of training.

Not one had asked to be excused.

Not one suggested stopping.

That alone told Gaius everything he needed to know.

Their resolve remained intact.

His decision to continue teaching them had been correct.

After several moments, he spoke again.

"Rest."

His gaze swept across every Spartan.

"All of you."

"You will need it."

No one objected.

With nothing else requiring his immediate attention, Gaius left the training grounds.

His next destination was his office.

Several officers were already waiting when he entered.

Marcus Hale stood among them.

The moment Gaius stepped inside, Marcus rose to his feet.

"Sir Gaius."

Gaius gave a small nod.

Marcus immediately began his report.

"The personnel shipments will begin arriving tomorrow."

"The material shipments will also begin tomorrow."

"They'll continue arriving according to the schedule approved by Admiral Parangosky."

"Good," Gaius replied.

That removed one more concern from his growing list.

The expanding fleet demanded manpower.

Pilots.

Crewmen.

Engineers.

Technicians.

Support personnel.

Likewise, the fabrication complex continued consuming tremendous quantities of resources every hour.

Without a continuous stream of raw materials, even the most efficient manufacturing system would eventually slow.

Gaius moved behind his desk and sat down.

The moment he did, holographic displays appeared before him.

Report after report filled the air.

Production reports.

Military reports.

Infrastructure reports.

Personnel reports.

The sheer volume of information would normally occupy someone for hours.

For Gaius...

It took barely a minute.

The holographic pages moved with astonishing speed.

Information flowed across the displays faster than any normal human eye could hope to follow.

Gaius calmly tracked every page.

Every sentence.

Every figure.

Every statistic.

His enhanced mind processed the information effortlessly.

One report after another disappeared as he finished reading.

He reviewed the status of the fabrication complex.

The expansion of the fleet.

The latest communications from Admiral Parangosky.

Incoming supply convoys.

Personnel transfers.

The evacuation progress across Cascade.

Everything.

Nothing appeared out of order.

Satisfied, he dismissed the holographic displays.

There was no additional work requiring his immediate attention.

So he stood once more.

And left.

His destination this time was the residence.

The atmosphere inside contrasted sharply with the military facilities outside.

It was quiet.

Peaceful.

Warm.

Around a large table sat Tanya, Diana, Saeko, and Mindy.

Tea had already been served.

Several plates filled with desserts rested neatly between them.

A teapot occupied the center of the table while casual conversation filled the room.

The discussion stopped the moment Gaius entered.

Tanya looked over first.

"Oh?"

"The busy administrator finally returns."

Saeko smiled gently.

"Welcome back."

Diana nodded toward him.

"How did the training go?"

Mindy looked equally curious.

Everyone living here understood how important the Spartan training had become.

Gaius walked toward the table.

"A breakthrough was achieved."

That immediately caught everyone's attention.

Tanya quietly set down her teacup.

"Someone finally awakened Haki?"

"Yes."

"Who?"

Gaius answered simply.

"John."

The four women exchanged brief glances.

Then Tanya nodded.

"That sounds about right."

If anyone among the Spartans was going to awaken Haki first...

Master Chief had always seemed the most likely candidate.

Diana poured another cup of tea before handing it to Gaius.

As he accepted it and prepared to take a sip, she spoke.

"I also finally awakened Armament Haki."

The room instantly became quiet.

Tanya turned toward her.

Saeko blinked.

Even Mindy's eyes widened slightly.

"You did?" Tanya asked.

Diana nodded.

"I awakened it a few days ago."

The others couldn't verify her claim.

Unlike Gaius, they couldn't sense Haki.

Diana extended one arm toward him.

To everyone else...

Nothing appeared different.

But through Observation Haki, Gaius immediately perceived it.

A thin coating of Armament Haki surrounded her arm.

It remained weak.

But unlike John's momentary awakening...

It was stable.

Gaius quietly placed his teacup onto the table.

Then reached out and grasped Diana's arm.

Without warning...

His grip tightened.

Crack.

The invisible coating of Armament Haki fractured almost immediately.

The pressure continued.

Only after it reached her actual skin did Gaius stop.

He released her arm.

Throughout the entire process, Diana never pulled away.

She remained calm.

Completely composed.

Gaius looked at her.

"Your Armament Haki is still weaker than your physical durability."

Everyone around the table listened carefully.

They still knew very little about Haki itself.

Gaius continued.

"At your current level, your body provides greater protection than your Armament."

"That will not remain true forever."

Diana nodded slowly.

She had already begun noticing the change herself.

Every day...

The strange power became slightly stronger.

Slightly easier to call upon.

Slightly more natural.

"Armament Haki grows through use," Gaius said.

"The more it is tempered..."

"The stronger it becomes."

"Eventually..."

"It will surpass your natural durability."

A faint smile appeared on Diana's face.

"I thought as much."

Tanya leaned back in her chair.

"So now there are three of you."

She counted them aloud.

"Naruto."

"Diana."

"And now John."

The number remained small.

But compared to where they had started...

It represented meaningful progress.

Gaius gave a slight nod.

"It is only the beginning."
