Chapter 237 - Chapter 235 — The Golden Spire

Chapter 235 — The Golden Spire

The Palace Spire rose above Varrak Prime like a blade of gold piercing the smoke-filled sky.

Even with much of the hive burning below, the upper districts surrounding the Spire remained untouched. Fires spread through distant sectors far beneath them, turning the horizon red, yet here the roads remained clean and intact. Decorative banners still hung from towering buildings. Lights glowed steadily across the district as if war had never reached it.

That alone felt wrong.

The Thunderhawk descended through the haze before landing heavily onto an elevated transit platform near the Palace district.

The rear ramp lowered immediately.

Gaius stepped out first.

Cold air greeted him.

Not the polluted heat of the lower hive.

Clean air.

Behind him, the Ultramarines disembarked in disciplined formation, bolters raised as they secured the platform.

The silence around the district stood out immediately. No screaming civilians. No panicked crowds. Even the distant sounds of war felt muted here.

Then Gaius felt it again.

Observation Haki spread outward instinctively.

Pressure.

Invisible.

Constant.

Warp-tainted influence filled the entire district like a veil draped over reality itself. It did not strike violently against the mind. Instead, it pressed gently, patiently, searching for weakness.

Several Ultramarines reacted subtly.

One glanced toward the towering statues lining the district for a second too long. Another adjusted his grip around his bolter as if trying to steady himself.

They were resisting.

But the influence was reaching them.

Ahead, enormous stairways climbed toward the Palace entrance.

Bodies covered the lower steps.

PDF soldiers.

Civilians.

Many still knelt where they had died.

Gaius continued upward without slowing.

The Ultramarines followed closely behind him.

Above them, colossal statues watched over the district. Golden armored figures stood carved into the walls of the Palace itself, staring down over the hive with expressions of absolute calm.

Naruto's voice quietly broke the silence from the Multiversal Chat.

"…I really don't like this place."

No one argued with him.

Because the deeper they advanced, the less the Palace felt like a normal structure.

Reality itself felt strained here.

Reflections across polished surfaces lagged slightly behind movement. Shadows stretched farther than they should. At the edge of perception, distant whispers echoed through empty corridors.

Warp corruption.

Controlled.

Contained beneath layers of false perfection.

The giant Palace doors slowly opened before they reached them.

No guards waited beyond.

Only silence.

The Ultramarines entered first.

Massive halls stretched ahead beneath towering marble columns lined with gold. Stained-glass windows covered the upper walls, each depicting the same radiant figure standing before kneeling crowds.

The Emperor.

Every image portrayed him differently.

Warrior.

Savior.

Protector.

A warm golden light filled the chamber.

And with it came the voice.

"Why do you defend an empire that abandoned its own people?"

The words echoed through the hall softly.

Not shouted.

Not threatening.

Gentle.

The psychic pressure inside the Palace immediately intensified.

One Ultramarine slowed mid-step before correcting himself. Another clenched his jaw beneath his helmet.

Gaius understood instantly.

The voice was not merely speaking.

It was forcing emotion directly into the mind.

Comfort.

Doubt.

Trust.

Every word carried psychic influence beneath it.

Then Gaius released Conqueror's Haki.

Invisible force exploded outward through the hall.

The pressure shattered instantly.

Nearby stained-glass windows trembled violently. Golden light flickered across the chamber as the psychic influence broke apart under the impact.

For one brief second,

The illusion cracked.

The figure depicted within the stained glass warped unnaturally.

Its smile widened too far.

Its shadow moved independently from the body.

Then the image stabilized again.

The Ultramarines straightened immediately, their focus restored.

Gaius spoke calmly.

"A psyker."

His gaze remained fixed deeper into the Palace.

"And heavily corrupted."

The voice remained silent for several moments afterward.

Then it spoke again.

"…interesting."

This time the warmth beneath it had weakened slightly.

The Ultramarines reformed around Gaius and advanced deeper into the Palace.

Long corridors stretched ahead beneath hanging banners of gold and white. Statues lined every hall, depicting scenes of unity and salvation.

But civilians stood among them.

Silent.

Watching.

Some knelt as the Ultramarines passed.

Not in fear.

In devotion.

Diana frowned slightly as she observed them.

"They really believe he saved them."

Gaius said nothing.

Because it was true.

This world had not fallen through terror alone.

It had fallen through hope.

The members of the Multiversal Chat could only watch in silence, taking in the growing unease around them. Mindy felt goosebumps rise along her arms, the atmosphere reminding her of a horror movie the longer she watched it.

Even Naruto felt uncomfortable. A chill ran down his spine as he watched the scene unfold.

As they entered another chamber, dozens of bodies appeared surrounding a massive statue at its center.

Civilians were found kneeling in place.

No visible wounds marked their bodies. Their expressions were calm, almost peaceful.

Tanya recognized it first.

"They're dead."

Tony looked toward the bodies, his expression tightening slightly.

"They died… worshipping?"

"Most likely," Tanya answered quietly. "And without any visible injuries."

Naruto, and Mindy got closed to saeko at all, thye are feeling a bit scared, watching all of this.

even though they arent ordinary people, well this scene isnt ordinary as well.

Gaius continued forward.

The pressure within the Palace grew heavier with every step.

And beneath it all,

Something watched them.

Observation Haki spread further.

Deeper inside the Spire, beyond layers of psychic distortion, Gaius sensed a second presence surrounding that person.

Ancient.

Hungry.

Its existence coiled around the Palace like something sleeping beneath the ocean.

Not fully manifested.

But close.

The voice returned again.

"The Imperium rules through fear."

Images suddenly flickered across nearby display screens.

Starving hive districts.

Riots.

Executions.

Bodies left abandoned in the streets.

Then the images changed.

Organized food lines.

Armed patrols maintaining peace.

Crowds gathering peacefully beneath the golden image of the False Emperor.

"I gave them dignity," the voice said quietly.

Naruto stared silently at the screens.

Because the worst part was obvious now.

The man speaking had truly helped these people.

At least in the beginning.

That was what made the corruption dangerous.

Not hatred.

Conviction.

Gaius finally answered.

"You traded their future for worship."

Silence followed.

Then the psychic pressure surged violently through the corridor.

Several nearby PDF soldiers collapsed to their knees instantly in prayer. One Ultramarine staggered slightly before steadying himself.

Gaius released Conqueror's Haki again.

This time controlled.

Focused.

The invisible clash between psychic force and Haki spread through the halls like colliding storms.

The pressure broke apart around the Ultramarines.

And for another brief moment,

The illusion peeled away.

The Palace darkened.

The golden light dimmed into something sickly and warped.

Far deeper ahead, behind massive doors at the center of the Spire, something enormous shifted within the Warp.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then reality sealed itself again.

The voice no longer sounded calm.

"You cannot understand what humanity requires."

Gaius' expression remained unmoved.

"You are no Emperor."

The words echoed through the corridor.

A long silence followed afterward.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Only disappointment.

Then the massive golden doors at the end of the chamber slowly began to open.

Radiant light spilled outward into the corridor.

Warm.

Inviting.

False.

The Ultramarines immediately raised their bolters.

Gaius stepped forward first.

And from beyond the opening doors, the voice spoke one final time.

"You would rather preserve a dying Imperium…"

A pause followed.

"…than accept a humanity free from it."
