Chapter 204 — Reflections Across Time
The upper conference room of Stark Tower had finally grown quiet.
Inside, the Avengers gathered around the long table.
Tony Stark stood near the window, one hand holding a glass he had barely touched. His armor was gone now, replaced by a clean black shirt, though faint burn marks still traced his sleeves. Steve Rogers sat nearby, leaning forward slightly, forearms resting on his knees.
Thor stood close to the case containing the Tesseract, watching it carefully as if guarding it even during conversation.
Natasha Romanoff remained relaxed in her chair, though her eyes missed nothing.
At the far side of the room stood Gaius.
Even without speaking, his presence filled the space. The golden armor reflected the room's lights softly, and the Ultramarine behind him remained perfectly still like a statue.
Tony finally broke the silence.
"So," he said, glancing at Gaius, "what was that earlier? Sending Titus and the Sisters of Silence downstairs?"
Gaius shifted his gaze toward him.
His expression remained calm, thoughtful.
"I sensed three figures sneaking inside," Gaius said evenly. "Their presence was unusual."
He paused.
His eyes moved toward Steve and Tony.
"And their aura…"
He stopped speaking for a moment, as if choosing the right words.
"…they carried the same familiarity as yours."
Tony blinked.
Steve frowned slightly.
Confusion spread across both their faces.
Tony tilted his head. "What do you mean?"
Gaius remained silent for a few seconds, clearly thinking.
"I believe," he said slowly, "they are you."
Steve straightened. "They are us?"
Before Gaius could answer further, he looked toward the entrance of the room.
"They are coming up right now," he said calmly. "We will wait. Then we will know."
The room fell into a brief silence.
Tony stared at him, clearly unsure how to respond. After a moment, he exhaled and decided not to push the topic further.
Instead, he turned toward Natasha.
Changing the subject felt easier.
"Natasha," he asked, "when is Fury arriving?"
Natasha touched her earpiece instinctively just as a voice spoke quietly through it. She listened for a moment, then gave a small, wry smile.
"Well," she said, leaning back slightly, "turns out the World Security Council decided to solve the invasion their own way."
Tony narrowed his eyes. "That never sounds good."
"They ordered a nuclear strike on Manhattan when the Chitauri started coming through the portal," Natasha said calmly.
The room froze.
Steve immediately stood.
"What?" he said sharply. "How dare they try to drop a nuclear bomb here? There are still civilians living in this city."
Anger rarely showed so openly on his face, but now it did.
Tony's expression darkened as well.
"How stupid are they?" he said, frustration clear in his voice. "Do they think throwing a nuclear bomb at the city would close the portal?"
Natasha shook her head.
"Fury intercepted it," she continued. "Successfully. Otherwise… we would've had to stop a nuclear missile ourselves."
Thor's grip tightened slightly around Mjolnir.
The thought alone left the room heavy.
Before anyone could respond further
The door slid open.
Every head turned.
Titus entered first, his massive armored frame filling the doorway. Behind him walked the Sister of Silence, silent and composed.
Then three more figures stepped inside.
Tony froze.
Steve slowly stood.
Standing before them were three men they knew instantly.
Older.
Worn by time.
But unmistakable.
Future Tony Stark.
Future Steve Rogers.
The air itself seemed to stop moving.
Present Tony stared directly at his counterpart.
Same posture.
Same eyes.
Just older… and carrying a weight he didn't yet understand.
"You…" present Tony said slowly. "You're Tony Stark?"
The question sounded unnecessary even as he asked it.
Future Tony gave a small, tired smile.
"Indeed," he said. "I'm from the future."
A short pause.
"I am Iron Man."
Across the room, Steve faced his older self.
Future Steve looked stronger in a quieter way, calmer, settled.
Present Steve spoke before he could stop himself.
"Well… how was it?"
The question carried more meaning than words alone.
How was life?
Did everything matter?
Was it worth it?
Future Steve understood immediately.
He smiled gently.
"It was definitely worth it."
Relief flickered briefly across present Steve's face.
Natasha looked between them, disbelief clear now.
"Wait," she said, standing. "You're from the future?!"
Future Tony casually picked up the drink from present Tony's hand and sat down like he belonged there.
"Well, we should be," he said. Then he gestured lightly toward Gaius and the Ultramarines. "But where I'm from… they don't exist."
Future Tony slowly looked around the room again, processing everything.
Then something else caught his attention.
"Where's Hulk?" future Tony asked. "And Agent Barton?"
Natasha answered immediately.
"Banner is on the Helicarrier," she said. Then her tone softened slightly. "Barton… still hasn't been found."
Future Tony raised his eyebrows.
"…Yeah," he muttered. "This is definitely not our universe."
Present Tony crossed his arms.
"What are you doing here?" he asked seriously. "Why come back to the past?"
Future Tony didn't answer right away.
He looked down briefly.
Sadness crossed his face, but also determination.
Finally, he spoke.
"We're here for the Infinity Stones."
He lifted a hand and pointed toward the Tesseract resting inside its containment case.
Thor stepped forward immediately.
"Why?" Thor asked firmly. "The Tesseract is far too dangerous. I am taking it back to Asgard for safeguarding."
Future Steve looked at him.
For a moment, he couldn't help remembering his own Thor, heavier, broken by loss, yet still his friend.
"You agreed to it too," future Steve said gently.
Thor paused.
If his future self had agreed…
Then perhaps there was reason.
Tony spoke again.
"What happened in your time that made you come back?"
Future Tony inhaled slowly.
"One name," he said.
"Thanos."
The room grew still.
"Thanos gathered all the Infinity Stones," future Tony continued quietly. "And he wiped out half of all living beings in the universe."
Thor's eyes widened.
"The Mad Titan?" he said. "He gathered all the stones? That is impossible."
Thor spoke slowly, recalling ancient knowledge.
"With all Infinity Stones united… one could reshape reality itself, if they survived the power and its price."
Future Tony nodded faintly.
"We lost," he said simply. "Thanos succeeded. Half of humanity… gone."
Silence followed as every face turned solemn. Even the Ultramarines and the Sisters of Silence standing behind Gaius shifted slightly at the words, half of humanity gone, though none of them moved.
Present-day Tony and Steve fell quiet, their expressions turning serious as they listened to the dark words spoken by the future Tony.
"We need the stones," he continued. "We'll bring everyone back. After that, we return them to this moment."
Present Tony and Steve exchanged a long look.
The weight of the decision pressed heavily between them.
Finally, Tony turned toward Gaius.
"…Gaius?"
Gaius rose immediately.
He walked toward future Tony, each step heavy but controlled.
He stopped before him, towering over the seated man.
"Take me with you," Gaius said calmly. "Bring me to the future… and I will kill Thanos."
Anger burned quietly beneath his voice.
Half of humanity destroyed was not something he could ignore.
Future Tony looked up at him.
Even sitting, he understood how enormous Gaius was. If Hulk stood here, Gaius would still be taller.
Tony shook his head gently.
"No," he said. "We already killed Thanos."
Before anyone could respond,
Golden particles appeared.
A golden portal opened in the middle of the room.
Light spilled outward.
Everyone turned instantly.
A large green figure stepped through first.
"H-hello everyone?" Hulk said awkwardly.
Behind him walked a calm, bald woman in flowing robes.
The Ancient One.
The portal closed quietly behind them.
