Chapter 42 - Chapter 41: The Thing Behind the Smile

Rain poured endlessly from the dark sky.

The forest had become a sea of mud and shadows, illuminated only by occasional flashes of lightning. Every tree looked twisted beneath the storm, their branches swaying violently as thunder rolled overhead.

Alex stood still.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was thinking.

The giant Gengar floated between them and Team Eclipse, its massive grin stretching unnaturally across its face while crimson eyes observed everything around it.

Beside Alex, Violet wiped rainwater from her face.

"This thing is huge."

"Yeah."

"Any ideas?"

Alex didn't answer immediately.

That alone was enough to worry her.

When Alex already had a plan, he usually spoke quickly.

When he stayed silent...

He was still searching.

And that meant the situation was bad.

Very bad.

Behind them, their Pokémon remained ready.

Riolu had lowered its stance.

Ceruledge's blue flames flickered despite the rain.

Grovyle watched the surrounding trees.

Zorua remained hidden between shadows.

Meanwhile Team Eclipse seemed strangely calm.

Not confident.

Something else.

Alex noticed it immediately.

Their formation.

The distance they kept from the giant Gengar.

The way they looked at it.

Not loyalty.

Not trust.

Fear.

The realization came quickly.

"Violet."

She glanced toward him.

"What?"

"They don't control it."

The giant Gengar's eyes narrowed slightly.

Violet looked back toward Team Eclipse.

Now that Alex had mentioned it...

She saw it too.

Nobody stood near the Ghost-type.

Nobody issued commands.

Nobody acted like it was their Pokémon.

One of the masked trainers shifted nervously when Gengar moved.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

The leader of Team Eclipse stepped forward through the rain.

His silver mask reflected a flash of lightning.

"You should have stayed away from the house."

Alex finally spoke.

"The abandoned house?"

"It was never abandoned."

The giant Gengar laughed.

A horrible sound.

Like dozens of voices speaking at once.

Alex's eyes narrowed.

Pieces were starting to fit together.

Not all of them.

But enough.

The Eclipse leader pointed forward.

"Capture them."

The battle started immediately.

A Haunter launched a Shadow Ball through the rain.

"Ceruledge!"

Blue flames erupted.

The attacks collided violently.

Steam exploded into the air.

At the same time, Murkrow descended from above while Umbreon rushed across the muddy ground.

"Sneasel, left side!" Violet shouted.

Her Pokémon reacted instantly.

The Ice-type intercepted Murkrow midair, both Pokémon crashing through wet branches before disappearing into the storm.

"Toxicroak, pressure Umbreon!"

Toxicroak charged forward without hesitation.

The forest erupted into chaos.

Alex's eyes moved constantly.

Calculating.

Observing.

Looking for weaknesses.

The giant Gengar still wasn't attacking.

Not seriously.

It was watching.

Almost curious.

Then lightning illuminated the battlefield.

For a brief second, Alex noticed something.

The giant Gengar wasn't looking at them.

It wasn't looking at Team Eclipse either.

Its eyes kept drifting toward something deeper in the forest.

Something behind them.

A direction.

A location.

And every time it looked there...

Its expression changed slightly.

Not much.

But enough.

Alex pointed toward Riolu.

"Aura."

Riolu nodded immediately.

Its eyes closed.

The world disappeared.

The rain vanished.

The battlefield vanished.

Only energy remained.

Living energy.

Moving energy.

Emotions.

Connections.

And then Riolu found it.

Its eyes snapped open.

It pointed deeper into the forest.

Alex smiled slightly.

There it was.

The missing piece.

"Violet."

She ducked beneath a Shadow Ball before looking toward him.

"What now?"

"See where Riolu is pointing?"

"Yeah."

"We need to get there."

She blinked.

"That's your plan?"

"No."

A Haunter suddenly appeared beside Alex.

Shadow Punch.

Too fast.

Alex barely avoided it.

The attack ripped through his jacket instead.

"Grovyle!"

Leaf Blade flashed.

The Haunter retreated instantly.

Alex continued.

"That's where the real answer is."

Violet looked toward the giant Gengar again.

Then toward the distant section of forest.

Then back toward Alex.

"...You figured something out."

"Maybe."

"I hate when you say maybe."

"Deal with it"

Thunder exploded overhead.

The giant Gengar finally moved.

The pressure was immediate.

Terrifying.

Even Ceruledge stiffened.

Its instincts screamed danger.

The giant Ghost-type opened its mouth.

Dark energy began gathering.

Alex's eyes widened.

"Dodge!"

The Shadow Ball that followed was monstrous.

It tore through the forest.

Trees exploded.

Mud erupted everywhere.

The attack carved a path directly through the battlefield.

Nobody wanted to take a hit from that.

Not even Team Eclipse.

One of the masked trainers stumbled backward in fear.

The giant Gengar turned toward him.

Slowly.

Its smile widened.

Then it attacked.

The Eclipse member screamed as Shadow Energy sent him crashing into a tree.

Silence followed.

Alex immediately understood.

It wasn't allied with them.

It was simply tolerating them.

For now.

"Violet!" Alex shouted. "New plan."

"Tell me."

"We use that."

She followed his gaze.

The giant Gengar was now staring at the injured Eclipse member.

Like a predator.

Understanding appeared immediately.

A dangerous grin spread across her face.

"Oh."

"Yeah."

"Oh that's clever."

The next few seconds happened quickly.

"Zorua!" Alex shouted.

The shiny Pokémon emerged from the shadows immediately.

"Illusion."

Its eyes glowed.

Suddenly dozens of fake Team Eclipse members appeared across the battlefield.

Running.

Shouting.

Moving everywhere.

The giant Gengar froze.

Then its eyes narrowed.

The illusions looked identical.

The same robes.

The same masks.

The same people it already disliked.

And just like Alex hoped...

The giant Gengar attacked.

Violently.

Shadow Balls exploded across the forest.

Team Eclipse immediately fell into chaos.

"What is happening?!"

"Those aren't ours!"

"Watch out!"

For the first time since the battle began, the organization lost coordination.

And that was all Violet needed.

"Toxicroak, full attack!"

The Poison-type launched itself forward.

A punch connected directly with a masked trainer.

Another Eclipse member fell moments later after Sneasel struck from above.

The battlefield fractured.

Exactly as Alex wanted.

Now nobody controlled anything.

Not Team Eclipse.

Not Gengar.

Not even the storm.

Pure chaos.

And chaos created openings.

"Move!" Alex shouted.

Everyone sprinted deeper into the forest.

The giant Gengar noticed immediately.

It abandoned Team Eclipse and turned toward them again.

Fast.

Too fast.

The chase began.

Rain hammered the trees.

Mud splashed beneath every step.

Behind them, the giant Ghost-type floated through the forest effortlessly.

Closing the distance.

Alex ignored it.

He trusted Riolu.

And Riolu was leading them somewhere.

Thirty seconds later—

They arrived.

A clearing.

Hidden.

Forgotten.

Ancient.

At the center stood a small grave.

Alex immediately stopped.

So did everyone else.

The giant Gengar froze.

For the first time.

Actually froze.

Its smile disappeared.

The atmosphere changed completely.

The grave was old.

Very old.

Half covered by moss and roots.

A broken stone marker leaned to one side.

Someone had once tried to maintain it.

Long ago.

Then time had won.

Alex slowly approached.

The giant Gengar didn't attack.

It simply watched.

Violet noticed immediately.

"...This place."

"Yeah."

Riolu approached the grave carefully.

Then knelt.

Something was buried beneath.

Alex began clearing mud and roots away.

Rain continued falling.

Minutes passed.

Then his hand hit metal.

A small box.

Old.

Rusted.

Forgotten.

Alex opened it carefully.

Inside—

A photograph.

Weathered but intact.

A young trainer smiled at the camera.

Beside him stood a Gastly.

Silence filled the clearing.

The giant Gengar trembled.

Not with rage.

With emotion.

Alex understood immediately.

The Gastly.

The trainer.

The grave.

Everything.

Years.

Maybe decades.

Waiting.

Protecting.

Refusing to move on.

The giant Gengar stared at the photograph.

Its red eyes slowly widened.

Alex carefully placed the picture beside the grave.

No speech.

No dramatic words.

Nothing.

Because some things didn't need explaining.

The giant Gengar floated closer.

Closer.

Closer.

Then stopped.

Rainwater passed through its ghostly body.

The forest became silent.

Even Team Eclipse had stopped pursuing them.

Watching from the distance.

The giant Gengar looked at the grave.

Then the photograph.

Then the sky.

For the first time...

It looked tired.

Not evil.

Not monstrous.

Just tired.

Years of loneliness.

Years of anger.

Years of grief.

Finally breaking.

Slowly.

The shadow energy surrounding it weakened.

Its enormous body began fading.

Particle by particle.

Like mist.

Like smoke.

Like a memory finally being allowed to rest.

The Ghost-type looked toward Alex.

Then Riolu.

Then Violet.

A small nod.

Gratitude.

Respect.

Peace.

And then—

It vanished.

The storm immediately weakened.

Not stopped.

But weakened.

The oppressive feeling hanging over the forest disappeared.

Like a weight had finally been lifted.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Violet exhaled.

"...That was the creepiest thing I've ever experienced."

Alex nodded.

"Yeah."

"Are we sure we solved the problem?"

"I think so."

"That's not reassuring."

"nothing is."

That finally got a laugh from her.

Behind them, Team Eclipse began retreating.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Without the giant Gengar, they had lost their greatest advantage.

But before disappearing into the forest, the masked leader looked back one final time.

His gaze settled on Alex.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Interest.

Alex didn't like that.

Not one bit.

Eventually the figure vanished into the rain.

Leaving only silence behind.

Violet stretched her arms.

"I'm hungry."

Alex looked at the ruined grave one final time.

Then toward the distant lights of town.

"Let's go back."

For once.

Neither of them argued.

Tomorrow would bring new problems.

New battles.

New mysteries.

But tonight...

Tonight they were tired.

And for the first time in a long while, the forest felt a little less haunted.
