Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The 1st Mission

PS: Invest with confidence. The review process took too long; otherwise, I would have signed the contract yesterday.

Yang Bo couldn't help but feel anxious. Who the hell knew what kind of punishment he would face for killing these animals? The small animal protection laws in this world supposedly had over 3,700 regulations, with more than 500 of them carrying a penalty of life imprisonment.

Wu Bin was in the back, bagging all the uprooted plants into large sacks. When he saw the bat, he was pleasantly surprised instead. "It's fine. The client will even have to pay us extra. Bats carry many types of viruses, and our service agreement doesn't include dealing with them. I'll contact the butler right away."

"Brother Wu, killing small animals is a very serious issue..."

"Brother, don't worry about it. I'll explain everything in detail once we finish this job. Let me contact the butler." Wu Bin placed the bat's corpse into a transparent bag and went off to find the butler.

The butler soon arrived. He looked at the bat in the bag and said something to Wu Bin. Then, a person dressed like a servant came over with a black bag and took Wu Bin's bag away.

Yang Bo sensed a stark disconnect in this society. Based on the memories he inherited from this body, no animal was to be harmed under any circumstances, or one would face severe consequences.

However, he pushed those thoughts aside for now. He noticed that the plants in this garden seemed quite precious. While working, he began pondering his Transmigrator benefits. Suddenly, Wu Bin let out a sharp cry.

A rat scurried out from the dirt and charged straight at Yang Bo, seeking refuge in the large patch of uncleared plants on his side.

"Kill it!" Wu Bin shouted urgently.

Hearing this, Yang Bo instantly hurled the shovel in his hand. It struck the rat dead on. The rat bounced once, then dropped dead.

This time, Yang Bo focused intently, confirming that this message had indeed appeared in his mind.

"System?"

"Character panel?" Yang Bo called out various phrases in his mind, but nothing worked. He grew even more confused. Where did this ability come from?

"Don't be afraid, it's fine. This kind of thing is very common," Wu Bin explained as he cleaned up, looking at the stunned Yang Bo.

"Do you know why people hire residential services like us? It's precisely because of these things. If they wanted to hire a professional extermination company, they'd have to submit a bunch of applications, go through reviews by various agencies, and pay a hefty fee.

"Take the rat we just killed, for example. They would need to apply for that. If they wanted to drive away a bat, it would be even more troublesome, and the whole process would be recorded. For the rich, this is their own private garden, no one else's.

"There are professional companies that handle the corpses of these small animals. The wealthy just need to pay a sum of money, making things much simpler," he added, adjusting his work clothes.

"Then why can't their own servants do it?" Yang Bo asked, puzzled.

"If they did it themselves, it would be considered intentional harm and could be framed as premeditated. But when our service company accidentally harms small animals during the cleaning process, it's of a completely different nature," Wu Bin continued.

"Then do we bear any responsibility?"

"Of course not. We'll even receive a generous compensation, and might even need to see a psychiatrist. After all, no one wants to kill a cute animal," Wu Bin said to Yang Bo with a straight face.

Yang Bo thought, "I don't believe a word of that. Who was the one yelling 'kill it' just now?"

"However, this kind of talk can only happen in places like this. These rich people's manors can't be hacked by any devices. Once you get your smartwatch back, you have to watch your words and actions," Wu Bin added.

"Thank you, Brother Wu." Yang Bo now understood that the wealthy enjoyed many privileges.

"I won't admit to anything I've said here, so..." Wu Bin trailed off.

"I understand." Yang Bo nodded.

"In the future, when you go on service calls alone, just remember one thing. For anything outside the scope of our service, no matter what happens, these clients have the ability to handle it, and they will pay for it."

During the subsequent cleanup, Yang Bo killed four more rats, a few centipedes, and discovered an ant nest. However, only killing the rats triggered his Transmigrator benefits. The centipedes and ants yielded nothing.

Wu Bin even killed a snake.

At noon, the two ate the boxed lunches provided by the client, then continued working.

After working for three hours in the afternoon, they finally finished the cleanup. The garden was around 300 square meters, but only about 100 square meters had plants growing. All the plants were uprooted, the flower beds leveled, and the ground swept clean. Once they loaded the cleared debris onto the truck, their service was complete.

"Yang Bo, how did you feel today?" As soon as they returned to the company, Liu Zhijie asked Yang Bo with a smile.

"Mr. Liu, it felt acceptable," Yang Bo replied, keeping to himself that he was more than eager to do it again.

"Your salary for today is 462 Credit Points. In the future, when you take on assignments alone, the pay will be even higher. Additionally, after you officially join, the company will purchase insurance, pay into your pension, maternity fund, and so on." Liu Zhijie was already quite satisfied with Yang Bo's reaction. A large portion of people would quit after just one assignment. After all, manual labor was nowhere near as comfortable as staying home with no worries about food or drink.

"I will consider it carefully," Yang Bo nodded.

Liu Zhijie watched Yang Bo leave, then brought Wu Bin into a room. Before entering, they both took off their smartwatches.

"How was it?" Liu Zhijie asked in a lazy tone, a world of difference from how he had just spoken to Yang Bo.

"There's a high chance he'll stay. The rookie killed four rats and a bat today. Especially that first time he struck the bat—it was almost subconscious," Wu Bin reported respectfully.

"Those who come out to work either want to experience life or want freedom. I get the feeling this Yang Bo wants freedom," Liu Zhijie said.

"Isn't that even better? We'll give him some lucrative assignments so he can afford to buy a house and a car. By then, he'll know what true freedom is," Wu Bin said with a chuckle.

"Tomorrow, take him to experience something more intense. If he can handle it, great. If not, whatever. Some people just have violence written into their DNA," Liu Zhijie ordered.

"Understood."

"Thanks for your hard work, having to guide the rookie and all," Liu Zhijie added.

"Mr. Liu, you must be joking. Without you, I wouldn't be where I am today."

"Let's go. Work is over." Liu Zhijie stood up and patted Wu Bin's shoulder.

"I just hope this rookie of ours can become a true cleaner."

"Yeah, our line of work is getting harder and harder to do, yet the volume of business is still ridiculously high." Liu Zhijie shook his head and opened the door to leave.
