Jax let out a short breath, letting the silence take over the room for a few seconds after the echo of Leonardo's question faded.
He straightened his posture against the edge of the teak desk, staring directly into Leo's eyes, which seemed so demanding of an explanation.
"That's how Valerie used to be, Leo," Jax said, his voice low and laden with serious emphasis.
"She was at the absolute lowest point in her life, shattered into pieces to the point of nearly losing her own sanity. But slowly, she began to recover. And after that? She actually developed another motive that's far stronger than mere sorrow.
