Chapter 104 - Chapter 95 — Setting the Course

Morning came with a light breeze.

The island felt different now. Familiar, but finished—like a place that had served its purpose.

Rael stood near the shore with the map spread out on a flat rock. The sea stretched endlessly in front of him, calm on the surface, hiding whatever waited underneath.

Behind him, the girls slowly woke up.

Vivi sat up first, rubbing her eyes. "Are we… leaving today?"

"Yes," Rael replied without turning around.

Kaya pushed herself to her feet, brushing sand off her clothes. "Already?"

Robin walked over and looked down at the map. "You decided where we're going?"

Rael nodded. He traced a finger along the parchment. "We'll head east first. There's an island not too far from here. Small port. Supplies. Information."

Vivi leaned in. "And after that?"

"That depends on what we hear," Rael said. "And what we avoid."

Robin glanced at him. "You're still being careful."

"More than before," Rael answered.

Kaya hesitated. "Is it because of… us?"

Rael finally looked back at them.

"No," he said honestly. "It's because the world doesn't care how ready you think you are."

That quieted them.

Vivi sighed. "So… still training?"

"Yes."

She groaned. "I knew it."

"But," Rael added, "not like before. Now you train while moving. While tired. While distracted."

Robin nodded. "That's closer to reality."

"Exactly," Rael said.

Packing Up

They didn't have much to pack.

A few supplies. Weapons. Water. The map. The rest they carried with them already—bruises, soreness, and lessons learned the hard way.

Kaya carefully secured her cane. Vivi double-checked their food. Robin erased signs of their camp, covering tracks without being asked.

Rael noticed that too.

When they were ready, he took one last look at the clearing. The ground had settled overnight, cracks softened by sand and wind.

"Anything left behind?" Vivi asked.

Rael shook his head. "No. We're done here."

They pushed the boat into the water.

The waves were gentle, almost welcoming.

Almost.

Leaving the Island

Rael took the lead, steady and calm. Vivi helped Kaya into the boat, then climbed in herself. Robin took the rear, eyes scanning the shore as it slowly drifted away.

Kaya looked back. "It feels strange… leaving like this."

Vivi shrugged. "Better than staying forever."

Robin said quietly, "Places like that are meant to be passed through."

Rael didn't argue.

The island shrank behind them.

The training ground. The stone dummy. The bruises. The fear.

All left behind.

Ahead was open water.

On the Sea

The boat cut through the waves at a steady pace.

Rael adjusted the direction slightly, checking the map again. "If the weather holds, we'll reach the island by tomorrow."

Vivi squinted at the horizon. "It all looks the same to me."

"You'll learn," Rael said. "Pay attention to the current. The wind. The rhythm."

Kaya nodded slowly. "It feels… different out here."

Robin closed her eyes for a moment. "There's more noise."

Rael glanced at her. "You feel it?"

She nodded. "Intent. Everywhere. Ships. Creatures. People we can't see."

Vivi frowned. "I don't feel anything."

"That's fine," Rael said. "You will."

They rode in silence for a while.

Rael kept his senses open—not wide, not strained. Just aware.

That faint pressure was still there.

Distant.

Watching.

He didn't react.

Not yet.

Quiet Resolve

As the sun dipped lower, Vivi broke the silence. "Do you think we'll be ready… when something really bad happens?"

Rael didn't answer right away.

Then he said, "You won't ever feel ready."

Kaya's grip tightened on the edge of the boat.

"But," he continued, "you'll act anyway. And that's what matters."

Robin looked at him. "And you'll be there."

Rael met her gaze. "As long as I can."

That was enough.

The boat kept moving.

The sea stretched on.

And somewhere ahead, another island waited—one that didn't know they were coming.
