The pulse came again eleven minutes after the last one, and Ira turned toward it before it finished.
"We should go now."
"We should go in forty minutes," Leon said.
He said it without heat and loudly enough that all thirteen of the others heard him, because half of them were already looking northeast with the particular expression of people who wanted very badly to be doing something.
"We have one lead and no retreat. Every mistake we make from here is permanent." He turned to the deacon. "Deacon Yu. Consolidate. All nine of your people's records, every measuring tool, every marker, all the medicine and every portion of food anyone is carrying. Counted and distributed."
Yu did not argue, which Leon appreciated. "The samples?"
"Leave them. Everything heavy stays."
