The moment she saw him
Kurosaki Masaki felt an overwhelming urge to run out immediately.
To leave the classroom.
To call out to him.
To confirm that he was truly there.
But
She restrained herself.
That kind of behavior would be far too improper, especially during class. More importantly, she and that Shinigami had only met a handful of times. They hadn't even exchanged names yet.
If she acted recklessly, she might only make him wary.
So she endured it.
Suppressing that impulse, she waited quietly, patiently until the end of class.
When the break came, Masaki hurried outside, her eyes searching instinctively.
But
He was gone.
No trace of his Reiatsu.
No figure in sight.
A faint disappointment surfaced within her heart.
"…I guess I imagined it."
Time passed quickly.
By the time school ended, the sun had already begun to dip.
Masaki walked along the familiar road toward the Ishida residence, her schoolbag resting lightly on her shoulder.
Her thoughts, however
Were elsewhere.
Still lingering on that fleeting glimpse.
Then
Her steps slowed.
At the edge of her vision
A figure stood atop a utility pole.
Clad in black Shihakushō, with a white captain's haori draped over his shoulders.
The same presence.
The same man.
Her eyes widened instantly.
"It's you!"
Without hesitation, she called out to him.
"Are you alright? Do you remember me?"
Of course he remembered.
Shiba Isshin had come to the World of the Living specifically to see her.
He had deliberately avoided approaching her during school hours, choosing instead to wait until she was alone.
Now, hearing her voice
He turned, then stepped down effortlessly, landing before her.
"I'm fine," Isshin said with a relaxed grin.
"Thanks to you."
His tone softened slightly.
"If you hadn't stepped in back then… I might not be standing here."
Masaki immediately shook her head, a trace of embarrassment crossing her face.
"It wasn't anything like that… I just couldn't stand by and watch."
She hesitated briefly, then gathered her courage.
"My name is Kurosaki Masaki."
She looked at him directly.
"What's yours?"
Isshin didn't hesitate.
"Shiba Isshin."
Fate worked in quiet, subtle ways.
Though they had only crossed paths a few times
Though their first true interaction had been in the midst of danger
This moment, exchanging names, brought an unexpected sense of familiarity.
As if something had begun.
In the days that followed
Isshin remained in the World of the Living.
Each day, he would appear somewhere along Masaki's route to and from school.
Sometimes watching from a distance.
Sometimes walking alongside her.
Sometimes simply talking.
Their conversations were simple but never dull.
Though Isshin was a Shinigami who had lived for decades, even over a century, time flowed differently for beings like him. Emotional maturity did not always align with age.
And somehow
He found himself drawn to her.
Perhaps it was her kindness.
Or her resolve.
Or the strange sense of warmth in her Reiatsu
Something pure, yet powerful.
Through their conversations, Isshin learned more about her.
Kurosaki Masaki was, in truth, a pure-blood Quincy (Echt Quincy) raised within the Ishida family.
Though she lived under their care, she carried her own quiet strength.
In turn
Masaki was filled with curiosity about the Soul Society.
"What is it like?"
"Do souls really live there?"
"How do Shinigami protect the world?"
Question after question followed.
Isshin answered what he could.
He spoke of the Seireitei.
Of the Gotei 13.
Of Hollows and the balance of souls.
For Masaki, it was like hearing of another world entirely
And in truth, it was.
A part of her began to long to see it for herself.
But she also understood
That such a thing was impossible.
Days later
Isshin prepared to leave.
As a captain of the Gotei 13, he could not remain in the World of the Living indefinitely.
"I'll be back," he said casually.
Masaki smiled.
"I know."
She had expected this.
And yet
She didn't feel sadness.
Only a quiet contentment.
These past few days had been… meaningful.
Back in Seireitei
Isshin's return was met exactly as expected.
"CAPTAIN!!!"
Matsumoto Rangiku's voice echoed through the Tenth Division barracks.
"Do you have any idea how much work piled up while you were gone?!"
Isshin scratched his head, laughing awkwardly.
"Ah… it builds character?"
Rangiku's eye twitched.
The division had indeed fallen into disarray in his absence.
Even with her assistance
Much had been left undone.
As usual, Hitsugaya Tōshirō had handled a significant portion of the workload silently, preventing total collapse.
Isshin, for once, applied himself and cleared the backlog.
But
His diligence was, as always, temporary.
Not long after
He disappeared again.
And again.
Each time for several days.
Rangiku searched Seireitei repeatedly, but never found him.
Because she didn't know
Isshin had returned to the World of the Living.
To meet Masaki.
Thus
An impossible relationship quietly deepened.
A Shinigami.
A Quincy.
Two existences bound by generations of bloodshed and hatred.
And yet
Between Isshin and Masaki
That history seemed distant.
Irrelevant.
They spoke freely.
Laughed easily.
And somewhere along the way
Became irreplaceable to one another.
Still
They kept it secret.
Because they both understood:
If Soul Society or the Quincy learned of this bond
It would be destroyed without hesitation.
Time passed.
Their meetings became a rhythm.
A hidden thread connecting two worlds.
But neither of them noticed
That within Masaki
Something had begun to change.
The wound left by that Hollow…
Had not fully disappeared.
Instead
Over time
It had taken root.
Then
One day
Masaki collapsed.
Her body gave out without warning.
When Ishida Ryūken found her, his expression changed instantly.
"Masaki!"
He caught her before she hit the ground.
But the moment his senses examined her condition
His face darkened.
Because within her body
He felt it.
A foreign presence.
A Hollow's influence.
And more terrifying than that
He saw it.
A faint, unmistakable sign
Like a void opening within her very soul.
A Hollow's corruption
Beginning to manifest.
