3 years later…
Knock, Knock…
"Kanon, wake up," Mikan called out.
"You don't want to be late on your first day at high school, do you?" Mikan's voice sounded through the door, waking Kanon from his sleep.
"I am up; give me a minute." Kanon's hoarse voice came from the other side.
"Hmm… you'd better not fall asleep," she said as she went to prepare breakfast.
Rubbing my sleepy eyes, I got up from my bed and started to stretch.
"I should get ready before Mikan starts yelling again."
He then went to the restroom.
…
..
.
"We are off," said Mikan and I as we headed off to our schools.
"Have you packed everything?" Mikan asked.
"I have; I didn't forget lunch, see." I showed her my lunch bag.
"What about the books?" Mikan asked again.
"I didn't, and stop asking." Kanon became unsure for a moment.
Seeing the uncertainty in his face, Mikan stared harder.
"Give me a second." I immediately looked through my bag, and sure enough. He forgot to bring one of his books.
"Shit, I forgot the history book," he said, panicking.
I looked back and saw Mikan staring; her gaze said, 'I told you.'
With a nervous smile, he spoke, "Uhh… I think I have to run home. I will see you later." Kanon ran.
Mikan sighed, seeing him running.
"Seriously, when will he grow up?" Mikan, shaking her head, headed towards her school.
Locking the door, I took off running, heading back towards the school.
[If I keep running at this speed, I should be able to reach the school in time,] he thought.
Just when he was a few turns away from school, he unexpectedly bumped into someone.
It all happened so unexpectedly that Kanon couldn't react in time, and due to his running speed, they collided. However, before they fell, he instinctively grabbed the person and shielded them.
"Ugh…"
"Niyaaa…"
Thud!
With a dull thud, they fell, and Kanon found himself lying on the ground, his vision blocked by something soft; he didn't know what it was, but he still inquired about the other person above him.
"Are you alright?" I asked the person I bumped into.
"I am fine, but are you alright, Niya?"
[Niya?]
I heard a girl's voice.
"That's good. But can you get off me? I cannot see."
"Oh, I am sorry." The girl who said that got up and gave me a hand.
I opened my eyes and saw the most beautiful girl I had ever seen, combining both of my lives, with an impressive figure that outshone every girl I had seen so far; even those famous models wouldn't stand a chance. She had light orange hair and striking red eyes, and she wore a peculiar red and white costume with a golden bell around her neck.
As I look at the striking girl, I notice something above her head and something moving attached to her waist.
[Are those cat ears and a tail? Is she cosplaying?] His thoughts wandered.

"Are you really ok? Let me see." The concerned girl suddenly pulled out a smartphone-like gadget and started scanning my body with it.
I didn't know what she was looking for; it wasn't as if I was hurt. After levelling up significantly, my body is much stronger than it seems. He doubts that even if a truck hit him, he would die.
"Niya, it seems you are not hurrrt. I am so glad," the girl purred, her cat ears plopping down in relief.
[Are those ears real?] The thought occurred to me, seeing how natural those ear movements seem.
[Na, what am I thinking?] He dismissed the thought.
But even if they were real, it wouldn't surprise him. What could be more surprising than someone walking around with a literal 'Door to another world'?
"Thank you for protecting me," the girl bowed.
"Ah, no need to thank me; to begin with, it was my fault. I should have watched my steps," I apologised back.
My eyes were drawn to the device in her hands that looked like a smartphone. The last time he checked, smartphones like those weren't a thing; he did hear a few rumours about them releasing a full-screen phone, but he didn't realise they had been released. He should consider buying one. After killing monsters in the other world, he had a lot of cash lying around in his inventory, so he could easily afford it.
"OH CRAP! I AM LATE!!" he remembered he was running late.
"I am sorry, I have somewhere to be; I will see you around." With that, I started running towards school.
The cat-eared girl looked at the boy running off again and tilted her head to one side.
"Niya? Why is he in such a hurrrry?"
…
Inside the first year, in the '2-A' class of Sainan High, the roll call was going on.
"Kotagawa Yui"
"yes"
"Fujisaki Aya"
"Yes"
"Sairenji Haruna"
"Yes"
…
..
.
"Yuki Kanon"
"Present!" I hurriedly opened the door and entered the class.
"Present, I am present."
"Huff, huff…"
Honekawa, the homeroom teacher of class 2-A, looked at the boy. "You are Yuki Kanon."
"Yes, sir."
"You are late."
"I am sorry, sir." Kanon bowed in apology.
"This will never happen again, sir."
Honekawa looked at Kanon for a few seconds. "Fine, I won't punish you because it's the first day. But you'd better not be late next time."
"Thank you, sir." I bowed again.
"Now go take a seat," teacher Honekawa said.
I then walked to the back of the class, where the last corner seat was empty.
As he took his seat, he felt the weight of many gazes on him; he even noticed a few girls whispering. In Japan, being late is frowned upon, so he assumed they were discussing that. He tried to ignore their murmurs and decided to focus on the class.
"Did you see that? There is a hottie in our class." Risa sneakily looked back to where Kanon sat.
"Yeah, totally. Let's talk to him later." Mio suggested.
…
..
.
Ring Ring…
After the fourth-period bell rang, it was lunchtime.
"Man, all that running made me hungry."
I pulled out my lunch bag and was ready to eat.
"Hey there, cutie," I heard a girl's voice call out to me.
"Huh? Yes," I looked at the two girls who came near me.
"If I am not wrong, you are Yuki Kanon, right? The girl with dirty blond hair spoke.
Seeing they were talking to me, I answered, "Yes."
Do you need something from me?" I asked.
"Yeah, what type of girl do you like?" The spontaneous question was directed at me as the two girls stared at me with cheeky, teasing smiles.
"Huh?" Kanon was confused.
I looked at the two girls, eagerly watching me.
[Who starts a conversation like that?] I was about to retort, but stopped myself.
"Do I know you two?" I asked, acting as if I hadn't heard their question.
"No, this is the first time we've met; let me introduce myself. My name is Risa, and this is Mio. Now, tell us."
"..."
For a second, I pondered the question and remembered the girl I bumped into.
[I wonder if she has a boyfriend.] I immediately throw those thoughts away, focusing on the present.
"Haachu!" Around the same time, the same girl, whom he was thinking about, suddenly sneezed.
"Meow."
Hearing the cat's voice, she responded, "No, I am fine." She smiled at the cats.
I looked at the two girls and squinted. "Well, I don't really have a type."
Honestly, as long as the girl's face and personality are decent enough, any girl is fine.
"I guess someone like you two," he said after observing the girls for a bit.
"Oh my, already making your moves on us. But too bad, right now I am not looking for a boyfriend." Risa responded with a teasing smile.
"What about you, Mio?" she asked the black-haired twin-tailed girl.
"I am the same," she responded.
"Oh my, I guess we have to turn you down. But don't worry, we can help you connect with other girls. What do you think?" Risa said.
"Yeah, totally," Mio agreed.
Risa then noticed the half-opened lunch bag. "I guess we are disturbing you at the wrong time. We should also have something to eat."
Risa and Mio decide to take their leave.
"See you later, Yuki," they left saying that.
[They had quite the personality.] Thinking that, Kanon continued his lunch.
…
Ring Ring…
With the last bell, school ended, and everyone was ready to leave, for home or to join a club.
Kanon has no current interest in a club; although he might consider the martial arts or kendo club later, he has other plans for the day.
He then hurriedly went home.
…
..
.
"I am back." He opens the door and enters the house.
Not hearing any response, he guessed Mikan still hadn't returned home. "Is she out shopping? Hmm… I should freshen up."
…
..
.
Half an hour later…
"I am home." I heard Mikan's voice coming from the entrance.
"Welcome home."
Welcoming her, my attention then went towards the television; an interesting news program was going on all over the television channels.
"All over the world, the space agencies have confirmed this," a news anchor said in a serious tone.
For some reason, Kanon has a feeling he is about to hear something absurd.
Mikan steps in and sees Kanon lounging on the sofa, staring intently at the television; she then turns her head toward it, where familiar news is playing. She remembers seeing this a day ago: "This news has caused quite a buzz these days."
"Yes, there is no doubt about it; this message has come from the depths of space." A guest from the Japanese space organisation confirmed.
"But isn't that message too casual a message for coming from the depths of space?" the new anchor spoke with a slight doubt.
"Could it be a prank from some skilled hacker?" the anchor asked.
The guest then shook his head, "No. Well, we also thought the same at first, but after working with other organisations and comparing the information, we believe it might be a translation error from an alien language. However, the general message is, 'I am going to drop by.'"
Kanon stared at the television.
