They stepped through the front door of Daphne's residence, the lock hissing shut behind them with a soft pneumatic click. The foyer was all cool marble and recessed lighting, sterile as one of her labs, but Zaeryn didn't give the place a second glance.
He walked over to her and his arms slid around her waist before the door even finished sealing. He pulled her back against his chest in one smooth motion, palms splaying over the front of her coat, fingers digging just enough to feel the heat of her through the fabric.
Daphne's breath caught, then released in a low, amused huff. She didn't pull away. Instead she tilted her head, violet eyes cutting sideways to meet his over her shoulder. A slow grin curved her mouth, sharp and knowing, the same expression she wore when she caught an elegant flaw in someone else's data.
