Chapter 48

Chapter Text

Big thank you to @Massgamer for proofreading!

Chapter 48

Tanya really thinks she's slick.

Julia didn't exactly mind helping Shella and Dorel, but it was patently obvious what Tanya was trying to do. She wanted her to be a benchwarmer.

No, that's not it. More like an assistant coach? An equipment manager? Talent scout? Whatever. The point is, not a starter.

The metaphors weren't clicking perfectly in her head. The work itself required focus. She didn't gain any Cosmic Energy for performing Alchemical or Inscriptions. Julia also didn't gain the advantage of having Class related Skills or Dao that helped her do these tasks. Well, that wasn't quite true, she conceded to herself. Using the Dao of Trees did help make the very basic healing pills a bit better. The work was interesting, strangely enough, which annoyed her. She didn't want a hybrid Class – she wanted to stick with fighting!

When she wasn't helping them, she was making use of the Gravity Arrays to grind her attributes. That included doing things that injured her body, but how else were you supposed to gain Endurance? Vitality was straight forward. Exhaust yourself and then keep moving. Strength was just extreme resistance training. Dexterity was doing difficult things like complex balancing and jumping. But Endurance? Yeah, that involved an unfortunate amount of suffering.

Her dad wasn't happy, but she pointed out that it was better getting hurt now, when he could safely heal her, and maybe allow her to survive a deadly attack in the future.

"The rational part of me says you are correct, but this is still difficult. I don't think Tanya ever did all this."

"Yeah, well, I'm a mortal, Dad. Not only that, I can't go out and hunt to gain Levels. This is about all I can do until she finds me a suitable E-grade beast to fight. The attribute gains aren't anything spectacular, but it's something."

"Just be careful. Ultimately, this isn't a race. If you look on the bright side, Earth has made a huge amount of progress in a short amount of time. You are a bit behind, but maybe that means you don't fight with the Salamanders until you catch up."

Julia huffed and went to go back to her exercises, when she paused.

"Hey Dad, promise you won't get mad about something?"

"Nope, can't do it, but I promise to listen and consider what you are saying or asking before I respond."

Her cheeks grew a little warm. "There's, uh… there's this cute guy in the underworld. He's older than me… and we haven't done anything, like, nothing at all," she hastily explained, "I don't even know if he likes me, but… I was wondering if we could invite him into the Salamanders?"

Her dad didn't blow up or have a crazy reaction, not that she really thought he would, but it was just awkward. He did explain that the Salamanders were a tight knit-group and everyone was only allowed to invite in one 'extra' who would essentially be part of the second string.

That is such a Tanya rule, and I'm sure she'll make an exception.

"You should think hard about it, especially since you don't know how this guy feels about you. Why don't you tell me more about him? What did he do before the Fall? What is his Class? Why do you like him?"

It was a gentle interrogation, but an interrogation, nonetheless. Benjamin, or Ben, or Benny as she liked calling him, was brave and smart. He had worked in manufacturing and was somewhere in his 20s. Her dad had frowned deeply at that.

"Ugh, he also treated me like a comrade. Like a fellow adult who risked her life right there beside him to save people."

He sighed. "You're still my baby girl and you are asking to bring an older guy, who you find attractive and clearly hope to one day date, into the Salamanders when you know we will be trying to go off-world eventually? You obviously aren't going to start dating him right now, even should he be interested. What happens if he ends up not viewing you the same way you view him? Now you're stuck with someone in the Salamander Group that you might end up having negative emotions attached to. You probably want to think this through carefully."

"I guess…," she said halfheartedly. "I'm going to go help Shella with the next batch."

I'm getting so many advantages and I'm thankful every day that I'm reunited, I am! But I miss having the respect of my fellow guards. This feels like I'm going backwards instead of forwards.

Thomas watched Tanya work. He was still uneasy with the idea of letting powerful cultivators onto Earth, but he could see the advantages. Even now, Tanya was negotiating the idea of bringing their non-combatants to Earth. Hekruv was leery of the use of System Contracts, however. The idea of showing off their Levels and Classes with the Status screens also bothered him, but he was willing to compromise on that point.

It doesn't matter unless he agrees to help.

Using the warriors of the True Sky Faction to finish off the Undead Incursion and possibly defeat the Dominators was all well and good, but even if they were able to do that, humanity would still be in the same boat. Instead of Zhix and Undead with their boots on them, it would be the True Sky Faction. Still, such a conflict might cause them some losses, which would make things safer.

"We will not become your vassals! Allies, perhaps, but you ask too much."

"A System Contract is not vassalhood. How many people do you even have? Earth has hundreds of millions of people on it. Your people cannot rule, but they can work peacefully alongside others. But we must make it safe, first. Not all agreements can be forged in full in a day, so why not take these things step by step? In exchange for your information about bloodlines, we bring out a thousand of your people, have them agree not to do violence or attempt to force open the spatial tunnel Earth-side for the rest of you, and they can examine the world. We can bring some back and they can inform you of what it is like, as well as settle down in a safe place to build their homes in."

Thomas could sense the frustration coming from Hekruv. His body language was contained, but even though he was clearly an alien creature, there were similarities in the way he held himself.

"So they can be used as hostages?"

Tanya smiled. "That's why you would only be sending some of your people. It is in our best interests that we are allied. I will not lie to you, Earth is not yet fully secure. The Undead Empire still has an open Incursion. We have killed many of their generals and are driving them back, but we cannot make perfect guarantees. A close partnership between us can meet both our needs. Why don't you share with me a bit more about the conditions of the Mystic Realm and I will share with you some of the locations that might be suitable for the True Sky Faction?"

The two talked some more, and Thomas was impressed how Tanya navigated the conversation. The True Sky Faction neighbored two other factions, the Gemlings, which were a Race of squat humanoids that sounded similar to rocky, bipedal turtles. They were a crafting race, but due to the crystals that grew on their skin, they were able to make impressive Spirit Tools.

That was something Tanya had pointed out during a pause. All three of the True Sky members had potent Spirit Tools, but their armor was only F-grade. For E-grade cultivators, that was a poor showing. Thomas figured not every E-grade cultivator could have armor like Tanya and many of her Salamanders wore, but their leader and his chosen bodyguards? Certainly they should have them.

On the other flank was the Catarva Clan that had an ocular heritage. Hekruv said the Clan was suspicious of outsiders and trust came even slower to them. He admitted there was some bad blood between their factions, but that was the case for all the various people trapped in a land with poor cultivation conditions and an environment that could sometimes vomit out Void Beasts.

The inner labs made up the bulk of the middle section and beyond them, directly across them on a map, were the Lunar Tribe. Dangerous werewolves who tamed wolves and used the Dao of the Moon to navigate some of the spatial tears. Tanya had been able to get Hekruv talking, while seemingly sharing just as many details herself, but of matters that didn't give away much.

Tanya called for a short break and talked it over with him.

"Thomas, what we have here is an opportunity that may well matter far more than the Dimensional Seed. These people are researchers, who were trapped in here for generations in a bad cultivation environment where the Dao is weaker than normal. Necessity is the motherhood of invention. They no doubt have perfected their Skills, Body, and Soul Tempering Manuals, Bloodline improvements, and more. There are other factions here, including the Church, these werewolves, another Clan, and the Gemlings. It's possible our furry friend is lying, but he claims the inner labs are nearly unbreachable outside of the maintenance periods, which sometimes take decades in-between. Not to mention the powerful AI that runs it. I'm your hire, but if I were you, I would recruit them and take them, and whoever else you can get, to work for the NWG."

"And let someone else have what may amount to a super-weapon?"

"Better a bird in the hand…"

"But we don't have it in hand. They are resistant to serving as 'vassals' – you heard him."

Tanya shrugged. "Let me wear them down. They are tough, but I've got a lot of tricks up my sleeve. If they turn on me, I doubt I could win the fight, but I didn't see any flying treasures on them. I think I can get away. Have them send their crafters out, at least some of them, and let me and a couple of my Salamanders stay behind and keep working on them. I'll scout a bit with them into the base to see if what they are saying is true."

Thomas was deeply surprised by the offer. Tanya was a straight-shooter, but he was still confused by the motivation.

"Why do you want to do this? This represents greater risk on your part, and the gain is for the NWG."

"We still have Undead to deal with. And the Church. I don't wish to risk a goldmine of valuable information and E-grade allies by trying to play hardball. This isn't just about the NWG, but about Earth itself. And my own Salamanders, as I'll want copies of everything… naturally."

Thomas had come in with a plan; force the natives to work for him and obtain the treasure. There were all sorts of failsafe protocols to collapse the spatial tunnel if negotiations broke down. His concern had been allowing these more powerful cultivators loose on Earth.

But if I can use them…

It could be just the thing that the NWG needed. They had no one who could match Tanya or Zac. The NWG was better equipped and trained than the Sino-Indian Alliance, and had grown, largely due to Tanya leading the way against Incursions. His propaganda teams helped, but without her the NWG would likely only be half its size. But the one thing they didn't have was a weapon that could match the true elites of the Incursions and the Zhix.

"Tanya, we have to be careful. I'm wary of letting them free on Earth, but if you are willing to accept the risk, then you can proceed with my approval. Anyone who comes out must reveal their System screens, and I want no E-grades leaving. Middle E-grade and lower can be safely bound by a System Contract with you as the guarantor, but anything higher than that is too risky."

Tanya smiled. "A sensible precaution. This place plays havoc with radio and communication crystals, but if we have distortion for more than 24 hours I'll fly to the checkpoints and gate defenses to assure everyone I'm still breathing."

Earnest cooperation instead of heavy-handed control? I'm not fully convinced, but I'm even less enthused about going it alone and without Tanya's help. If I don't at least look like I'm playing it her way, she won't agree to an extension. She does make a good point, Peak F-grade crafters who can make items for my military would be a welcome addition.

And if things go too bad, they always Project M to fall back on.

Ogras had been to the Tower of Eternity once before. This was his second and last chance to earn a proper Title. He felt good, especially since he would be able to climb the first several floors of the Tower with the walking Human disaster that was Zachary Atwood. Meeting with Pretty Peak had been… interesting. The fact that Tanya had somehow managed to clear the 6th Floor of the Tower still staggered him. No living member of his Clan had achieved that.

She's a monster. I can only imagine how powerful their babies would be if they bred. If Zac goes as far as I think he can, the amount of treasure I could get selling their babies to various forces in the Zecia Sector would have me set until D-grade!

Not that either of the two seemed likely to ever mate. Even if they did, Zac would likely object, and females tended to be even more protective of their young. Idle fantasies about vast riches aside, their mission had hit some blockages.

Ogras had known of the difficulties of finding a world that still had the shroud up from the System, so the reality was if the Great Redeemer managed to successfully use the Karmic links he had with his followers, there wasn't much anyone could do. The best they had been able to get is Pretty Peak saying that, after the 100 years had passed, her family 'might' well provide some protection.

It would be too little and too late.

They moved forward with trying to find resources that could sense Karmic links and break them. The problem with that was that the Zecia Sector didn't have those sorts of treasures just lying around. An item that could do something like that was highly specialized and probably needed to be made by a Monarch. Zecia did not have very many Monarchs, it being a frontier one and all. Ogras had been following up on a lead about a cultivator in Base Town who was rumored to be apprenticed to a Karmic cultivator at D-grade, when he heard the aberration's name.

"They think this Atwood character can reach the 7th Floor? Pretty bold."

"No," an Orc replied, "it isn't. Prince Reoluv gave the cultivator the money. Said it was for luck. Those progenitors aren't risking anything." The Orc paused for a second, "Oh look, I just checked the Tower Ladder, the prince has already made it to the 6th Floor!"

Ogras interrupted. "Beg pardon, but I have not heard the news, may I inquire what is going on with one of the Dravorak Dynasty heirs?"

The Demon listened in stunned admiration. How in the lower realms had Tanya's second schemed his way to making a bet with zero risk? It was maddening, and even worse, it was likely to succeed! Fifteen Billion Nexus Coins was more liquid wealth than he and Zac had brought with them to the Tower of Eternity! Sure, the Nexus Mine, Creator's Shipyard, and all the other priceless things the axe-wielding menace somehow stumbled across was many times that in value, but that did them little good right now.

He might even be able to best the 7th Floor. He has more attributes than anyone has any damn right to at F-rank. The question is, how can I get in on this bet?

***

It seemed that half the Base Town had come to see the apparition. Prince Reoluv Dravorak had accomplished something that had not been done in a thousand years in the Zecia Sector. He had cleared the 7th Floor. He actually climbed a bit higher and ended up exiting on the 66th Level. Zhou watched with a bit of awe as the chimera-like creature roared with its heads. People saw the same thing, but what it meant to them was different.

Some who may have something like the Dao of Sanctuary may focus on the tough hide of the beast. Others may look to the flames it breathed if they had the Dao of Fire. For Zhou, it was the sharpness of its claws and teeth that drew his eye.

I am fortunate. I have been able to see this one and it has propelled my Dao Seed of Sharpness to Peak. I still have Atwood's apparition to see as well before I begin the climb myself.

Well-wishers and sycophants crowded around the young prince. From the distance, Zhou could tell the man was pleased with himself. He had learned that Reoluv was favored by the current ruler of the Dravorak Dynasty. Given the ages in the Multiverse, it would not be surprising if Reoluv ended up being the next ruler of the Dravorak Dynasty. Ability counted far more than age, and with an incredible performance like what he had just accomplished, even more resources would be made available to him to ascend to higher heights.

Zhou knew that the prince's nation didn't have as good a reputation as the Allbright Empire for welcoming travelling cultivators, but he would wish the young man well all the same. The Nexus Coins should hopefully multiply and allow Zhou to return triumphantly, regardless. That, of course, assumed Zac would do his part and potentially more.

With the weapons and enchanted ingredients he had already sold off, he was able to get several things that Tanya desired. Detailed descriptions on how to create and make use of puppets, more leveling pills, node-breaking pills, medicinal bath ingredients for going from E-grade Race to D-grade, and more. His crowning achievement was a Skill Crystal that was a puppet-like Skill that he felt she might find useful, even if only as a stopgap measure.

[Earth Puppet] created a puppet out of dirt or rock, whatever earthy material you had available. It would function just like a properly constructed puppet so long as Cosmic Energy was within it. Naturally, it leaked over time, so ideally you would want to create your own puppets instead of relying on the Skill. What the seller had advertised was that it was perfect to use as a disposable scouting device, or to trigger any traps. Instead of sending in your expensive puppet to a negotiation or into a dangerous area, why not just send a temporary construct?

The merchant had made a good pitch, even if it wasn't the true use Zhou had purchased the Skill for. Right now, Tanya didn't have a puppet at all, and this would also help Dorel when he set up his own Inscribed designs. Tanya could also experiment with it so that she could see if it was something she still wanted to pour resources into it. Zhou was quite pleased with the purchase, even if it was on the expensive side.

More purchases would have to wait until he, hopefully, received the money from the bet. Atwood would be ascending within the next day or two, probably whenever he crystalized whatever Dao insights he gained from viewing the prince's apparition. His other seeds, Bloodletting and Delegation, were both at the Middle stage. Having an odd number of Dao Seeds was not necessarily ideal, however. He hoped he would find balance with a 4th Dao Seed eventually. He meditated a bit on what new Dao insight he might uncover.

Nothing particularly called to him, though he had seen his comrades make use of their Dao Seeds. He was drawn more to Lightness than Loam or Chill, but he saw great value in a defensive Dao like Sanctuary. From the literature he had read, he knew there was a danger in your Dao developing without a coherent goal in mind. It would be like drawing legs on a snake.

The Dao is adaptable, and I still have time.

He knew that as much as he could help drive the direction of his Dao, a big part would be what sort of apparition appeared next. He could do nothing but wait with eagerness while he hoped that everything back home was going well.

"What is it that you hope for your people?" I asked the True Sky Council.

"Freedom from this wretched prison," the Human woman said.

"A place to cultivate," a green-furred man by the name of Absen added. He looked a bit like what I would assume the Lunar Tribe was like, but I couldn't be sure.

"We dream of retaining our autonomy, but not at the risk of becoming fertilizer for another's cultivation. We will not be slaves like our people were before," the monkeyman said solemnly. "The Boundless Heavens follow the law of the strongest, we understand this, but we have no wish to try to wrest control of your world. Give us space, peace, and we will gladly trade with you."

Music to my ears. If only everyone thought that way.

"I am not part of the NWG, just an independent contractor. In my duty as their agent I was to help provide security, and I've taken over these negotiations in good faith," I explained. "But… I'm also under no obligation to lie on their behalf. If you view me as trustworthy, I believe we can come to an agreement that will help you, the NWG, and the Salamanders."

They looked puzzled so I further explained the situation. The NWG was not the dominant power on Earth. That had yet to be decided. I was the highest level cultivator and I had worked with them through multiple contracts, but not exclusively.

"The first priority we have is our survival, but we don't want to trade one evil for another. True, you might be better than the Dominators or the Undead, but we'll not free you only to see you turn on us. That's why there is a need for potential System Contracts to enforce that you cannot. The problem is that I'm only an Early E-grade and we don't know your full strength, or the possibility that you might ascend to Hegemony and be able to break it."

Even a High E-grade might survive the backlash of breaking the System Contract I guarantee, though their cultivation and Soul would be damaged. A Peak E-grade though…

Hekruv frowned. "You speak of not lying, but how can you sit there and claim you are only an Early E-grade?"

I blinked. "You think I'm lying? Here," I said and showed my Level in the Status screen. This seemed to shock them.

"Why did you think I was higher?"

"The confidence in which you move and your understanding of the Dao. You have a Fragment, I can sense it. That is rare outside of the elders of the factions."

That's good confirmation that they really have been crippled by this realm.

"Yes, I do. Before the first year of Integration is done, I hope to have another, at least."

More shocked exclamations. The Human woman shook her head. "Your world must be teeming with the Dao!"

"It is, and the Origin Dao will likely last for several more years. Such a magnificent opportunity for your people… if we can trust one another."

Hekruv smiled faintly. "The dream of Hegemony I had long given up on, but if your world truly has such potential… ah, it is almost cruel to bring such hope when it may not manifest."

"I have every interest in manifesting it. But beyond the agreement with the NWG and your faction, I have no qualms with trading resources under the banner of the Salamanders. Given the isolation of this place, I suspect some resources you have an overabundance of and other resources you lack completely."

Trade between nations made use of a concept called comparative advantage. Even if a highly developed nation could make product X in vastly more numbers than a less developed nation, it might still enter a trade agreement so their resources could be spent on producing product Y instead. Opportunity cost always existed. If people were using labor and resources to create one thing, they had to give up on their next-best thing they could have created. Cultivation was a lot like that, which is why my 'cheat' that came with my Soul Mastery Manual was such a boon. The 6th Floor Clear of the Tower had changed the course of my path.

The green-furred wolf-like councilor was named Absen, who I learned he was descended from a few members of the Lunar Tribe who had defected to the True Sky Faction, who, unlike the other factions that mostly were a unified Race or Clan, welcomed all, nodded eagerly.

"There are many things we could trade for. But does this not weaken your bargaining, by making us stronger?"

"Trust is important, and as the NWG's chosen diplomat, the more we work to establish said trust, the better. So… I could not help but notice it doesn't appear that many of you have defensive treasures or powerful armor. Why is that?"

They explained that they did have crafters, but spiritual material was hard to come by. Many of their crafters instead focused on becoming Datamancers, so they could interact with the laboratories and find the treasures within the center of the Mystic Realm. Datamancers sounded close to what Technocrats were, but I wouldn't push the issue. I honestly didn't care; the Technocrats were right as far as I could tell. The System was awful.

"Well, we can't have that. Since we don't have a lot of time, I'll just craft a Peak F-grade defensive treasure. It will only be usable once a year, but the unique effect should be useful. If you would like to observe, feel free to, just stay back."

I wanted to flex my muscles a bit as well as prove my own utility to them. They watched with interest as I reached into my Cosmos Sack and took out the tough hides of slain beasts, then saw as I used [Disenchant] on them. I then unleashed the Dao of the Forge as an effect while also using the Dao of Sanctuary to begin moving Cosmic Energy into a pre-fashioned simple amulet. My Fragment provided the power to force Cosmic Energy to fill it far faster than I ever could have done previously. At the same time, it also stabilized the manifestation and prevented any leakage. The Dao Seed of Sanctuary was the specific Dao imbuement I gave my shield amulet. Within thirty minutes I was done.

A crowd of their people had arrived to watch. I was glad that we had moved into a more inner location, an actual small settlement with a bit better Cosmic Energy density. I had finished it and handed it over. Several of their own crafters studied it.

"There doesn't seem to be a way to activate it," one noted.

"It's contingent. It senses hostile forces over and under a certain temperature that isn't caused by anything your own Cosmic Energy does. It also senses the speed of weapons you aren't using, hostile impact, and a few other narrow cases. This is why it doesn't always play well with other defensive treasures, but seeing as you have so few, I find it especially suits you. The layering effect is the best part, as even E-grade attacks can be stopped by it since many attacks dissipate and concentrate their force on the first layer, making the second and third ones able to deal with the leftover energies."

Ah, hook, line, and sinker. It appears my goods will be in high demand. Now to see what materials, resources, and treasures they have to give in return.

Vhorra knew why she had been chosen to accompany Tanya. The other Salamanders were with the NWG at the nearest gate, but she had gone with her. Like always, the commander liked her ability to accomplish multiple tasks. Having a second set of eyes to watch her back was always good. Having a comrade who was also powerful and had an escape method through the Seed of Loam was also smart. But beyond that, Vhorra quickly understood the diplomatic reasons why she was selected.

She wasn't Human. The True Sky Faction, from their first introduction, seemed to be cobbled together from multiple different Races. This was typically not the case for factions outside of empires that contained hundreds of worlds. The Demon factions just had Demons. The Tal'Eladar just had fellow Tal'Eladar. Here, Vhorra understood she was partially being used because she was clearly not Human. At the same time, she was 'trusted' to an extent and well-equipped, just like her Human peers.

Clever indeed. When my 100 years of service is complete, I must contemplate if I truly wish to return to my Clan and attempt to ascend to leadership, or if I should just continue growing stronger in Tanya's wake.

"You are not a native of the planet?" the beastkin woman asked.

"No, I was originally part of an Incursion. Tanya dueled my uncle and I chose to sign a System Contract to enter her service. It has gone very well for me, allowing me to upgrade one of my Dao Seeds and make use of her inspired crafting."

"Do you not chafe at being compelled to serve?"

Vhorra shrugged. "I might have if it were someone else. Originally, she wanted me less for my combat expertise and more for my knowledge of the Multiverse." She grinned at Ekla Vira, the granddaughter of the head of the Sky Faction Council. "But after I appealed to her and demonstrated my prowess, she allowed me to do what I desire. That is to grow stronger, advance my Dao, and confirm my path. She is a great believer in allowing her followers to act in accordance with their desires."

"And the NWG?"

Vhorra knew she was being pumped for information.

"They've paid us well, haven't tried to cheat us, and shared information with us willingly. They have helped close Incursions and taken part in curtailing the Undead Empire Incursion. I have had no complaints when we take a contract with them."

"Are the cultivation spots really so much better out there?" Ekla asked with excitement.

"For the Dao? Yes, absolutely. For Cosmic Energy, it depends. My own homeworld was a Middle D-grade world. Earth is still transforming, so you will find pockets of Peak E-grade energy, and in other spots it is little better than what you have here in the habitable zone. Earth will eventually complete its transformation into a Low D-grade world, so it will eventually be better than this."

They talked further and Vhorra knew that Tanya would be pleased at the genuine longing and excitement in the eyes of the True Sky Faction members at her words.
