Jon
Jon had not stopped looking out the window of the carriage for the entire ride. It had been a few days since they left Starfall and started traveling along the Prince's Pass. It would be another few days if traveling still to reach the Boneway and then the seat of House Yronwood.
His mother seemed nervous, though, as they passed through the mountains, especially when passing by the ruined tower some called the Tower of Joy. His mother rubbed her hand over his back as he gaped at it, which was odd as he found the whole sight awesome.
Except for the eight small towers of rocks. Those were weird. Why would someone stack them like that? But Jon quickly tore his attention back to the tower.
How could such a big tower like that fall? Jon knew it had to be magic and was excited to see what type of spell could do that type of damage. It had to do with earth, he was certain of it. But if it was its deviant form he was not sure. Jon could still vividly recall signs of a battle. Scorch marks, broken rocks, craters in the ground. Whoever had fought here sure wasn't a pushover when it came to magic.
"Are you feeling alright mother?" Jon asked, pulling his head back inside the window. "You look ill."
Ashara had an unfamiliar look in her eyes as she closed the slide that allowed sight to the outside world. Her face also seemed pale but Jon found it hard to tell in the dim lightning.
"I'm fine sweetling, there's no need to worry for me." Ashara smiled.
Jon tilted his head. He didn't believe her. "Are you sure? Because I overheard Maester Orville talking about how women start feeling sick when there's a baby on the way."
Nymeria snorted and Allyria had to look away and bite her tongue. Both failed miserably at suppressing their snickers while Ashara's eyes widened.
"No, I can assure you there's no baby, and who was our dear Maester even talking to for you to overhear that?"
Jon pointed to Allyria. "Her. I wanted to play as I was finished with my lessons with Ser Desmond but she wasn't done with hers."
Ashara sighed deeply and pinched the bridge of her nose. "Sweetling, do me a favor and don't repeat everything you hear aloud."
"But why? Maester Orville is a learned man isn't he? Shouldn't I pay attention to what he says because he's smarter than me?"
Ashara opened her mouth to answer before closing it and shaking her head in disbelief. Nymeria took this moment to chime in after getting herself back under control.
"Jon, do you know how during training when I hit Ser Desmond just a bit too hard he says words we told you not to repeat to your mother?"
"I do." Jon nodded.
"This is like that."
"Oh."
Ashara placed her head in her palms and shook her head while Allyria just laughed. "Don't worry Jon, I'm sure there will be a baby someday soon."
Jon tilted his head. "Why's that?"
"Well, I'll have one someday." She smiled.
"Why?"
"Because I'll be married." Allyria wistfully sighed.
Jon didn't hesitate with what he said next. "Who would want to marry you?"
Nymeria burst out laughing while Ashara prepared herself for what she knew was to come.
Allyria gasped in offense and placed her hand over her chest. "How dare you, you-you little brat."
Her foot shot out and kicked Jon in the knee.
"Ow!" Jon yelped before he kicked her back.
"Hey! No mana!" Allyria yelled. She kicked him again and Jon responded in kind while Nymeria was hunched in on herself laughing so hard tears sprang from her eyes.
After a few more kicks between the two and Jon looking like he was about to jump out of his seat at Allyria, Ashara cut the commotion with a sharp whistle.
"Children!" She hollered. "Enough, both of you say you're sorry and behave."
A bead of silence filled the air only broken by soft laughter from Nymeria as she tried to control herself. Another second pass and Ashara's glare turned scathing causing both children to mutter their apologies.
"Sorry," Jon muttered.
"Yeah sorry."
"Now hug and make up."
Both children grumbled but did as Ashara bid. Seeming to hate every second of it yet didn't want to be scolded any further. Once they pulled back Ashara sighed.
"You better behave for the rest of the ride or neither of you will participate in any of the fun a tourney can bring."
Both children sulked and looked away but neither protested. Nymeria was finally able to get herself under control and playfully nudged Jon.
"You used mana to reinforce your legs. Good job."
Jon smiled slightly but his wandering thoughts were cut off by Ashara. "Don't praise him for using it poorly."
Nymeria rolled her eyes and gave Jon a thumbs-up. The boy hid his smile as his mother gave him and Nymeria both a stern look.
….
More days passed and soon their little caravan had passed from the Prince's Pass into the Boneway. His mother always made sure to keep him close whenever they set up camp. The mountain range was steep and dangerous, even more so than the Prince's Pass.
His training didn't stop just because they were traveling however. Each night when they set up camp Nymeria would take Jon aside and the two would practice mana manipulation. Jon was starting to get better and faster at moving it through his body. But Nymeria also threw in a curveball and had him channel it through his body and knife at the same time.
The knife was a present she had gotten him for his fifth nameday. A basic little thing like the two she wore at her sides. It fit in his palm nicely and it wasn't a full-on sword just yet which gave Ashara some peace of mind.
She was still a little angry at Nymeria giving him said weapon without consulting her first however. Jon on the other hand, well he immediately took the thing and had run out into the training yard to go and throw it at targets.
"You're getting better Jon." Ser Desmond smiled. His black eyes shone with amusement as he blocked another slash from Jon's wooden sword. "You're using mana."
"It makes my body stronger." Jon huffed. Feinting a thrust at his hip before switching to his knee.
Desmond was quick to react by lifting his foot up and stomping down. Pinning Jon's sword underfoot and allowing him to tap Jon on the shoulder.
"That it does." The man said, stepping back. "But don't allow it to be a crutch. Otherwise, you'll be a fish out of water when you run out of it in a fight."
Jon nodded as he absorbed the information. Behind him, he could hear the bustle of guards finishing setting up the camp behind him. The sun was beginning to set over the mountains. Their red hue shone brightly as the sun reflected its rays. It would be dark soon, and soon the heat would leave and the cold would arrive.
"I think we've done enough for today." Ser Desmond said. "Why don't you go find your Mother and discuss final preparations for when we arrive at Yronwood?"
"Ok." Jon agreed. He handed the wooden sword back to Ser Desmond who happily took it. "Will you be competing in the tourney Ser?"
"Only the melee. Jousting never was my forte."
Ser Desmond was a decent rider, as a knight he had to be. But multiple times he had said he didn't like the joust. He liked being in the thick of it. The clashing of swords and the raining down of armored fists on an opponent made Ser Desmond laugh with glee.
It was no surprise to Jon that the man was a solid orange core Augmenter. The man seemed to love fighting. Jon felt that it made him a good teacher as he wasn't going to sugarcoat things for him. Or perhaps he wanted to train Jon to give him a good fight.
His reasoning was a coin toss to Jon. Not that he cared. Ser Desmond was fun and nice. Who cares if he liked a good fight every now and then?
With evening training done Jon made his way back to camp. The tents were an assortment of colors. Red, purple, blue, and green. Jon and his family were staying in the purple ones as it was the color of House Dayne. So it was easy to find where his Mother's tent was. Though upon arriving he didn't find his Mother, he found Allyria sitting by her lonesome, brushing her hair.
"Where's Mother?" Jon asked.
Allyria hummed and turned. "She and Nymeria are having a chat. I think she's afraid our resident Sand Snake will influence you poorly." She smiled.
"And Wylla?"
"No doubt whipping the men about to set up camp." Allyria snorted. "She's like Ser Desmond with those boys I swear."
Jon crossed the rest of the tent and sat next to Allyria. The girl with purple eyes smiled and playfully patted the bottom of her brush against his head. "So how was training?"
"Fun. Ser Desmond says I'm progressing well. But I use mana too much and he doesn't want it to become a crutch."
"Smart man," Allyria answered. "You excited for the tourney?"
Jon was quick to nod. "Mhmm, I want to see all the magic. How many deviants do you think are there? Do you think I'll see lightning?"
"You may, or perhaps you'll see something more interesting than lightning."
Jon was quick to disagree. "Nuh-uh, nothing's cooler than lightning."
"And how would you know? You've never seen anyone wield it." Allyria teased.
Jon crossed his arms and huffed. "You're a girl so I wouldn't expect you to understand. All you care about is flowers and songs."
Her finger poked his cheek. "And all you care about is watching people beat the hell out of each other you little brute."
Jon huffed and crossed his arms. "I want to see the magic."
"Right." Allyria rolled her eyes. "And I don't want to be the Queen of love and beauty."
"Ha." Jon laughed. "I knew you only cared about those stupid flowers."
Allyria sighed and set down her brush. "Every girl dreams of being crowned. It means whoever won dedicates their victory to that girl. It's all very sweet and romantic."
Jon had to stop himself from rolling his eyes. Romance and love sounded icky. All he wanted to do was enjoy the show. But as he looked at Allyria, he saw that this seemed to matter to her in some capacity.
"So you want a flower crown?"
"Every girl likes flowers, Jon." She smiled. "But a crown to dedicate an entire victory in a tourney. That's what I want."
Jon was quiet as his eyes flicked around the tent. There were no flowers around, and he doubted he could grow them here. It turns out a desert wasn't the best place for flowers.
"I don't know how to ride a horse," Jon said.
Allyria snorted before raising an eyebrow. "Yes, you haven't had those lessons yet." Her smile widened. "Oh Jon, don't tell me you want to crown me as Queen of love and beauty."
Jon's cheeks turned a healthy shade of pink as he looked away. "No!"
"Oh, I think you do."
"Nuh-uh, shut up. I would crown the girl next to you."
With a laugh, Allyria surged forward and wrapped Jon up in a tight hug. "Oh, you're so cute when you try to lie."
"Hey!" Jon protested, kicking and struggling to break out of Allyria's grip. "Let me go!"
"Nope." She said with a pop of the p. "I won't let you escape from what you said."
Try as he might Jon could not break from Allyria's grip. No matter how hard he tried her grip would not loosen. It wasn't until Nymeria came into the tent with a vague look on her face that Jon was able to escape.
He hadn't used mana the entire time Allyria held him.
"Jon, come on. We have evening meditation before dinner."
"Ok." Jon chirped. Before he ran to Nymaeira however he turned around and hugged Allyria. "See you later Allyria, love you."
Allyria ruffled his ebony locks of hair. "Love you too, you little brat."
….
The caravan had made good time and was now only two days away from their destination. Two days to go and Jon could not sit still in his seat. He kept peering out the window from the carriage as if to will the thing faster.
His lack of tact as his mother would call it seemed to drive those in the carriage up a wall. Well except Nymeria, she had been oddly quiet the past couple of days. Which was odd as she was normally busy teasing Allyria or giving small lessons to Jon when the need arose.
She seemed haunted for lack of a better word.
His Mother on the other hand seemed all wound up. The path they were taking was more narrow and dangerous than usual. The carriage bumped and shook with each small stone it hit. He heard his Mother take in a few shaky breaths when one rock made them shake particularly hard.
"Jon, sweetie." She breathed out. "Can you close the window and sit down? I don't want you to fall out."
The window wasn't nearly big enough for that. But Jon acquiesced to his Mother's request not exactly putting that together. They rode in silence for an unknown amount of time. But Ashara was holding his hand firmly yet not too tightly to where it would hurt.
For a few minutes more they rode until the caravan came to a sudden stop. All in the carriage grew confused as Ashara opened the window and peered out to see Ser Desmond riding up to them.
"Ser Desmond. What seems to be the holdup?" Ashara asked.
"Riders wearing Yronwood colors up ahead on the road. Seems like outriders meant to ferry us in."
"Two days from Yronwood? That's a little odd."
"That's what I'm going to find out. Wait here, we should be on the move here pretty soon once this is all sorted out."
Ser Desmon rode ahead and Ashara shut the window. Her hand gripped Jon's tighter while the boy only gave her a smile.
"Outriders means we're close. Ooh, do you think I can talk to them once we set up camp? I want to see if they're mages, and if they are what attribute they have." Jon excitedly asked.
Ashara gave him a tight smile. "Maybe Jon, maybe."
A few minutes later the caravan was moving again and Ashara seemed to let out a sigh of relief. As they were moving however Nymeria elbowed Jon's side.
"Hey, if one of them is a fire mage does that mean you'll leave me?"
Jon shook his head. "No I would-
The ground rumbled as an explosion rang out into the air. The carriage they were in turned and then flipped over sending its occupants flying. Nymeria's arms were quick to shoot out and wrap around Jon and she used her body as a cushion as she slammed into the wall and then the ceiling of the carriage.
Jon's head swam, his heart thundered in his chest and he heard shouting, the sounds of steel clashing against steel. Ashara was clutching her head while Allyria tried to push herself to her hands and knees.
"-on! Jon!" Nymeria was yelling. Her arms let him go and he rolled off her. Still dazed and confused as to what was truly going on.
Immediately his Mother put her hands on his cheeks. Looking at him with half-glazed eyes as she felt him for injuries.
"Are you ok?!"
"I'm fine Mother."
The door to the carriage flew off its hinges as Nymeria kicked it out. "Get out or you won't be for long!" She yelled.
Nymeria was the first to crawl out. Her knives were already in hand. Jon was the second and when he got outside he watched as Nymeria stabbed a man in his belly before using her second knife to slit his throat. Blood spurted from the wound like a fountain as he crumpled to the ground dead. His garb was loose-fitting and torn making Jon think of a bandit hiding out in the mountains.
His focus was drawn back to the carriage as Allyria's hand pawed at his foot. Doing his best to keep his breakfast down Jon imbued his body with mana and used the added strength to pull both Allyria and his Mother from the wreckage.
All around them the sounds of battle were loud. Off in the distance, Jon could see Ser Desmond fighting the two men dressed in Yronwood colors. Both radiated fire from their swords as they attacked Ser Desmond. But the knight met their mettle with his own as he fought them back using earth.
Yet both men were Augmenters. If Ser Desmond was holding them off that raised the question of where the Conjurer who flipped their carriage over was. Because if the two other mages couldn't get past Ser Desmond they did not have the firepower to flip the carriage over.
A heavy hand rested on his shoulder breaking Jon from his stupor. He turned and saw Nymeria crouching down next to him.
"Listen closely, Jon!" She sternly said. "Back down the path I saw a tiny outcropping. I'm going to take you and your family there but there might be a chance I'll have to stay behind. If that happens you'll have to lead them to safety. Can you do that?"
"I…I-
"Now's not the time to hesitate!" She shouted. "If it comes down to it, you'll need to protect your family! Use what I taught you and you'll be fine."
Jon didn't respond and only nodded. Nymeria sighed and took the best she got as she stood up. "Everyone hold hands. No use getting separated. If you do, you're as good as dead."
Allyria let out a choked muted sound of fear causing Ashara to rub her shoulder. Jon's heart was thundering and he found the air stale and hard to breathe. But Nymeria had grabbed his hand and in turn, he grabbed Allyria's who was holding Ashara's.
Nymeria started to pull them along almost immediately. As Jon looked around he watched as bandits and the men of House Dayne fought. Most of the men on both sides weren't mages, and the only two Jon had seen were the two Augmenters from earlier.
Which once more begged the question of where the Conjurer was.
Nymeria stopped dead in her tracks and quickly let go of Jon's hand. Her knife came up and parried a slash from a man with a hatchet before kicking him away. Jon could sense mana coming from him. But the man was also an Augmenter.
"Go! I'll catch up!" Nymeria yelled.
Jon didn't waste a second. He ran, ran as fast as he could down the path. It was steep and next to him was a massive cavernous pit that spelled certain death were he to fall. But if he didn't run he and his family would die anyway.
He almost didn't sense the fluctuation of mana building up from the ridge. But by the time he did, it was almost too late. Jon's head snapped to the side as he looked up to see a man standing atop the ridge holding a staff.
Jon's body moved on its own. The second the spell was fired he came to a stop and turned. Before Ashara or Allyria could protest he pushed Allyria away from him and into Ashara. The older woman caught her younger sister as both fell to the ground.
The world went white around Jon as the spell hit him. The ground beneath his feet exploded and Jon felt weightless as the ground came out from under him. In the distance, he could see a knife flying through the air and stabbing the Conjurer in the neck killing the man.
A panicked look made its way to Jon's face as he flew over the edge. Allyria tried to scramble forward to grab him. Her fingers brushed against his boot, and then he was out of reach.
All Jon could hear as he plummeted to his death was the shouts of Allyria. Before the pain of the explosion made his entire world go black.
At least he wouldn't feel anything. There was a certain comfort someone could take in that.
….
Hot.
That was the first thing Jon felt as his eyes fluttered open. As they began to focus all he could see above him was the sheer cliff face he had fallen off of. It was so high he couldn't see the top nor could he count that high.
He was only in a little pain, but it didn't feel like it was from the fall. Because if it had been then he'd be dead. So why was he still alive?
With a groan, Jon sat up and looked around. The valley he was in was empty but flat. He could barely make out any rocks, so at least there was good news on that front. However nothing had been around to break his fall, and even with his mana barrier he still wouldn't have survived the fall.
The thing had broken when the explosion hit him so it wouldn't have served any use anyway. But he should be dead, and yet he wasn't.
Jon inhaled a shaky breath as he looked around. He was alone, with no food and no water. Even surviving the fall there was a likely chance he'd still die. That was a scary thought for a five-year-old boy.
"Oh, you're awake?"
Jon's head whipped around upon hearing the female voice, it was smooth, silky, and dignified. Yet again, he saw no one or anything. He was still alone. Was the heat getting to him?
"I can assure you it's not the heat. I am very much real."
Jon let out a sigh of relief before his mind caught up to him. The voice was in his head. Moving quickly he unsheathed his knife and held it in front of him.
"Who are you?! Are you the reason I'm alive?"
"Yes to your second question. The first will have to wait until we meet face to face."
Jon imagined a shaky breath. "Well come out so I can see you then."
"I am not there, but my dwelling is close by."
"My Mother told me not to trust strangers. Especially not those who can talk in my head."
"Good advice. But I am the only one who will be able to get you home. You do want that don't you?"
Jon's breath caught in his throat as he froze. Home, that was right. His family was still alive, at least that's what he hoped. There only seemed to be four mages in that ambush group. So maybe they were alright?
Edric was still in Starfall however, he loved the boy like a brother. With Lord Dayne dying he'd need someone to look out for him soon. If this woman was the only chance he had at getting home he'd need to take it.
Jon cleared his throat. "Um, excuse me. Can I have uh…directions to your home?"
He heard the woman chuckle. "How mannerful of you Jon Sand. I'll show you."
'How did she know my-
Jon fell to his knees and grasped his head in pain. The world seemed to fly over him as he passed over the valley from the sky. After a few seconds, his mind flashed with an image of a cave buried into one of the cliff faces. Upon seeing the image in his mind the pain went away and the boy gasped for air.
"I recommend departing immediately. It's safer to travel while it's still light out. You don't want to be caught out in the desert at night. The cold will get you before the mana beasts."
As the pain fully left Jon's head, he wobbled to his feet. He could vaguely recall one of his lessons with Maester Orville about mana beasts. Some were tameable while most wouldn't hesitate to eat you alive. It was one of the first lessons he had taken before he learned to write and as such didn't remember much from said lesson.
So with no other choice, Jon started to make his way to the cave. It was a long walk and took most of the day. The path was empty however, leaving Jon to trek through the desert by himself with every little gust of wind setting him on edge. The valley was beautiful as it was hot, and had he not been in a fight for survival he might have liked the scenery. But by the gods it was hot. Were he not used to Dorne's weather Jon was sure he would have died from the heat already.
As he walked however Jon began to wonder just how this woman had saved him. How did she know he was falling? And if she had knowledge about his said fall from the ambush why didn't she warn him?
The sun soon began to set signaling that night was quickly approaching. Jon let out a sigh of relief as he reached the entrance of the cave. A crevice in the wall that he could easily fit through. However, it was odd as the inside seemed to be glowing slightly.
"I'm glad you were able to make it here safely. Quickly, come inside. The sun is setting and we don't want you caught outside after dark."
Jon gave a nod as he gulped and climbed inside. He was hungry, and very thirsty. Whoever this woman was, he hoped she cooked dinner. As he crawled into the cave the glow brightened until it became hard to see.
"Watch your step." The woman warned.
The warning came too late as a rock under Jon's foot slipped out from under him and sent him tumbling down into a hole. Had he known any curse words he most likely would have said them as he fell. The world moved past him quickly and before he slammed into the ground Jon noticed a strange glowing fruit.
His body landed with a small thud that didn't cause as much pain as he thought it would. With a sigh, he stood up and brushed the dust off his pants.
"A warning that I was going to fall would've been appreciated," Jon muttered.
His breath caught in his throat when he looked up. His body froze as he tried to step back and he tripped on a rock causing him to fall.
In front of him, at least two stories high was a giant obsidian black stone monster with glowing red eyes and a jagged mouth holding sharp teeth. Twin onyx horns jutted forward and curved inward with long black hair that seemed more stone than anything else.
"We meet at last child." The monster said and with a startling realization, Jon realized it was the woman's voice he heard in his head.
Jon crawled back, his heart racing in fear as she approached. Jon opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out as his back pressed against a rock. The monster drew closer and closer, each footstep causing the ground to quiver as she drew closer.
"Bugs will fly into your mouth if you leave it open that wide."
She was right on top of him now. Towering over him like the great big stone beast she was. Her hand outstretched and Jon knew this was it. He had been lured here to be eaten.
The monster crouched down and held out her hand to him. "It'll take me some time to open a dimensional rift strong enough to send you home."
When Jon looked into her open palm he saw a glowing piece of red fruit in her hand. Similar to the blue one he had seen while falling. "Are you hungry? These special plants will nourish you until then."
Jon exhaled shakily before swallowing roughly. His stomach grumbled loudly as he slowly took the fruit in the woman's hand. She made no move to grab him or harm him. She merely let him take the fruit from her as she sat across from him.
He was slow to take a bite. Ready to bolt at a moment's notice if he needed to. But as his teeth sank in and the taste of the fruit flooded his senses he began to eat like a boy possessed.
The woman chuckled as she watched the sight, and then winced and grabbed her chest. Jon took a second to stop eating and look up at her. Only then noticing the glowing red wound that glowed from her chest.
"Nothing to worry about." The woman reassured. "Keep eating."
Jon swallowed the piece in his mouth first before speaking. "So um, I know you said you're a woman. But what exactly can I call you? I mean, is there a better way to address you than just woman? My Mother always says I need to treat ladies with respect."
Jon could feel the amusement radiating off the woman despite her facial features not changing in the slightest. "You can call me Sylvia."
Jon nodded. "Well, I'm Jon. But you already knew that because you said my name before. Can I ask how you know that? Actually, I have a lot of questions I want to ask."
Sylvia seemed to have expected this as she merely nodded. "I will answer those I can to the best of my ability."
Notes:
And so it begins. Don't worry he won't be in that cave for long but I can't really say much more without spoilers. Other than that I don't really have anything to say other than the Dunk and Egg trailer was peak and I'm excited for the series.
