Chapter 6: Prologue (Part 6)
Chapter Text
"--alamitas? Calamitas, are you okay?" Said a man covered head-to-toe in a strange wooden metal. An armor set made of uelibloom, a strange plant-like metal that warded off even the deadliest of blows.
He was tall, gruff-looking, but looked at Calamitas in concern all the same. His deep brown eyes revealed themselves when he took off his helmet to get a closer look at her.
His name was Braelor. A rebel leader against the tyranny of the Jungle Tyrant, Yharim.
Off to his side was another man, dressed in cloth. His face was entirely covered in it, and he seemed to meld together with the shadows. He was thinner than Braelor, and not as tall, but the steel beneath his eyes showed his skill. An assassin of the highest caliber.
His name was Statis. Braelor's fellow rebel leader and friend.
And on her knees, holding a single hand to her forehead, was Calamitas.
Having finally left the Tyrant, Calamitas stole documents that reported everything important in regard to the Jungle Temple and the rebellions forces.
The two rebel leaders didn't trust her, not in the slightest. She was the Witch of Calamity. However, she was one of the most powerful within Yharim's forces, her betrayal was very welcome in their eyes. Therefore, they weren't going to deny her entry to their rebellion. More power and people to attack at the Tyrant was welcome indeed.
"I-I, I don't know, Braelor. I've never felt this before…" The Witch stood back up to her full height, an even 6 feet. Though the two men with her were still taller. "I suddenly have a very bad feeling about this…"
Wind blew through the mountain temple they were in. Stones layered upon each other made up the walls, and pillars held up the ceiling. There was a simple wooden table in the middle of the room, with many different documents sprawled across it.
"Is it Yharim?" Statis' smooth voice easily entered her ears.
"I just said that I've never felt this before!" The Witch snapped. The two rebel leaders jumped back, weapons at the ready. Calamitas felt heat crawl up her back, and she looked behind her. Her flames slithered on her almost lazily. She cut the mana supplying them and they dwindled and died. "I-I… Why did that just happen? I didn't mean to do that, please pay it no mind."
Braelor slowly walked back to the table and placed his fingers on a document. His eyes never left her. "It says here that 'Progress has remained smooth, though materials required continue to expand as my need to create does the same. I'm in the process of fixing the liability of your miners.' signed by Draedon… Calamitas, do you know what he's talking about?"
"Draedon has been in the process of making his magnum opera for a long time. Huge mechanical beasts that can only be used for killing. He says 'smooth', but that just means his slow pace is still slow, pay it no heed." The Witch waves off his concern. "The real problem is that he's fixing the slow material gathering, I'm not sure how he'll proceed, but knowing him and his incessant need to create, it'll be more machines."
"Magnum opera? How much power will these things have?"
"That… I don't know. He doesn't let anyone look at them, and he keeps his mouth shut despite his constant praises about their testing," Calamitas looked at the ninja. "However, they will be strong, perhaps stronger than me."
Statis looked at Braelor with a modicum of concern. "That's something we cannot allow."
"I agree, both he and Yharim have been killing for long enough."
Calamitas remained silent.
Return to me.
She spun around at the sudden whisper. But all she saw was the wall and shadow.
"Is something wrong, Calamitas? Or are you worried Yharim is somehow here?" Braelor called out from behind her.
"Did you two... not hear that?"
This time, Braelor looked to Statis then back at her in concern. "...No? Did you hear something?"
Calamitas suddenly felt sick, a pounding headache resided within her skull.
Return to me.
"Ghhk!!" She fell to her knees and gasped for air. Braelor quickly started running to her, but she yelled out, "Stop! D-don't come any closer!"
He stopped, and Statis was already on the lookout with his knives. Looking into the distance and into the shadows. Seeing nothing but stone.
Return to me.
A weight smashed into her skull, over and over. She fell to the ground and seized as her intestines spilled out. Her heart exploded in her chest and her ribs shattered. She was on fire, she was ice cold, she was suffocating, she was getting crushed, she was exploding.
"Braelor, she's been… she's been cursed!"
Her fingers snapped in half, her bones were hollowed out with a spoon, her flesh rotted, her eyes shriveled up, her blood boiled.
"Cursed?! By whom?! Who could have cursed her without her knowledge?!"
Her flesh was severed from her body, her body was punctured with holes, her veins were pulled out, her nails were ripped off.
"M-MAKE IT STOP!!" She screamed out.
Return to me.
"I R-REFUSE!!"
Her tongue was shaved down. Her teeth were snipped off. A drill went into her ears and into her brain. Her tendons were pulled out. Her intestines were melted down.
Return to me.
She screamed, louder and louder. She could no longer see the two rebel leaders. The world was pain, her emotions were pain, her body was pain, her spirit was pain.
Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain.
Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain.

"Make it stop…"
"Very well." Yharim looked down on her, who crawled back to the Jungle where he reigned. She'd made her choice and must now deal with the consequences.
Unable to feel anything but rage and hatred from that point on. Her curse remained within her mind, warping her every decision.
"Send word for The Witch of Calamity! It's of utmost importance for her presence at A-B3 as soon as possible! This is a code Pro!"
The first thing she heard was the sirens. It disrupted her concentration when she was trying to cast intricate magic. It already caused her anger to rise. But Yharim told her not to destroy anything while in the Jungle Base. It was a meaningless command, but he forced her to oblige regardless.
The second thing she heard was a door slamming open with a desperate cry. "Witch of Calamity! This is a code Pro! You're needed at A-B3 as soon as possible!"
The sight of magical runes and sigils written all along the floor and walls didn't cause the foot soldier any discomfort. The staff in the middle radiating horrifying amounts of energy didn't either. Instead, it was the disheveled appearance of a woman looking annoyed for being interrupted in her room when she was enchanting a staff.
The bags under her eyes were darker than her skin. Her hair was unclean and greasy. Her pupils were dilated and glassy, but the annoyance behind them was constant.
It was only that there was a code Pro, coined after the Profaned Goddess, Providence had almost reduced the world to ash, that she didn't kill him. A threat against their world, that's what Code Pro meant.
Her help was necessary to contain the threat; that's why the Witch of Calamity, whom everyone in Yharim's army feared, was even being talked to.
It was an ordinary happening in the army, accidentally making her rage. The soldier responsible was almost always a pile of smoldering ash in an instant afterward. The best way to not incur her wrath was to never interact with her.
The foot soldier had no faith that he'd survive except for the direct order by the Jungle Tyrant himself not to destroy the Jungle Base. A threat against his life versus a threat against the world had different priorities. He would've been forced to call for her regardless of the order's veracity.
"Code Pro…?" The Witch tiredly whispered. The bags under her eyes were apparent. Looking like she hadn't slept in months, which was accurate. She stood up and left her magical ritual unfinished, swiftly passing the soldier and moving towards A-B3.
One of the furthest points of the Jungle Base, A-B3 was a place she was familiar with. The only other place she'd go besides her room. Draedon's testing grounds. Which meant it wasn't an outside force causing a Code Pro. Instead, it was a mistake needing correction.
Before she saw it, Calamitas didn't need to know that it was that new pet that Yharim had taken in. That worm. The powers granted to it by devouring the cosmic god, Astrum Deus, allowed it to warp space-time and reality to its will.
The fact she could feel the malignant tumor of reality from here meant that she wasn't going to have time to enchant her new magic weapon anytime soon. The pull on her magic, which felt almost harrowing, and the resistance of her soul which refused to be turned into nothingness. She had to resist being swallowed, even when the tumor was so far away.
Behind the giant metal doors of the testing ground was where Draedon needed her; she didn't care for waiting. Her fire flew forth, connecting with the metal, eating it like a disease. She walked through and saw what she felt.
A gaping black hole, trying to suck in everything around it. Ripping the reinforced scoria that had been the flooring of the grounds into it. The area directly below was already stripped bare.
The reality-tumor bent light and space around it as it yearned hungrily to consume everything.
"STOP LOOKING AT IT LIKE IT'S SOME KIND OF MAGICAL DELICACY, CALAMITOUS WITCH!" A booming voice yelled at her, and she felt her irritation rise. The Devourer of Gods had surrounded the black hole with hundreds of bluish circular gates. But it was evident the worm was failing to contain the tear.
"You look different, Devourer, did you put on something different this morning?" Calamitas yawned as the worm yelled at her.
"YOU KNOW WHAT THIS ARMOR IS! THIS RIP IN REALITY IS MERELY AN EFFECT OF MISUSE!"
"Meaning you're too much of a failure to be able to use it properly. I'm not surprised."
"YOU!! A GOD DOES NOT CARE FOR SUCH REMARKS!"
"A Witch does not care for your absolute ineptitude that she needs to help you clean up your own mess."
"Silence."
A cutting voice interrupted the both of them. Calamitas looked up with no surprise to see a primarily cybernetic creature sitting in a floating chair with a single thruster on the bottom.
"Draedon."
"Calamitas, cease your prattle and incessant remarks about the Devourer of Gods' incompetence. It is unable to control that tear in reality, if you don't assist it, then our world could very well be swallowed." The cyborg ordered her to do something about it.
"Yeah, right. I'm sure you wanted something like this to happen so you could run tests on it. You wouldn't care if it destroyed everything as long as you could study it and use that data for new experiments."
The cyborg's eyes narrowed on her. "Help the Devourer, I have a shell of cosmic steel at the ready once it's stabilized."
"Tch." His words made evident that he'd planned for this, which meant planning for Calamitas' wasted time.
But she was forced to do it. Her magic only worked when the concept of reality worked along with what she knows.
Together, with the Devourer of Gods, she stabilized the tear in reality, and Draedon fulfilled his objective, encasing it in cosmic steel.
What surprised Calamitas, for what little that emotion meant under the curse, Yharim ordered her to study the tear. She'd heard it regurgitated all the energy and souls it consumed into formless black energy. Its power and ability to destroy everything aimlessly caused the Devourer to make it one of its sentinels.
Draedon's studies deemed it impossible to control, only useful for destruction.
Yharim feared the cosmic casing being compromised, and she or the Devourer wasn't there to suppress it. But, from her studies, she determined that if anything destroyed the shell, the universe would flood in, crushing the tear in reality to stabilize itself.
Or, the abyss between worlds would flood endlessly, destroying the entire universe and reducing it into a wasteland of nothingness.
Calamitas leaned back from her desk, littered with unintelligible jargon-filled scrolls. In front of her was her report of her studies, Yharim wouldn't be happy, but that man hadn't felt happiness in years.
Finally, she was able to turn back to her enchantments, to further her arsenal, to be able to kill even more efficiently.
She stopped, seeing something that she didn't like.
In the middle of her papers, in place of the report, was a writhing purple mass.
"That's… What?" Calamitas lifted her right hand and reached forward, freezing when she saw it. Her gloved fingers twitched, "Wasn't this… cut off?"
Calamitas held her head with her left hand. "That's not what happened? Cordialness? It wasn't possible for me to destroy the door because of the order, I had to wait!"
Calamitas stood up abruptly, knocking her chair to the ground. She released her head and looked around.
"This is a dream."
Her attention fell back to the purple mass. It hadn't moved from where she first saw it.
"This disgusting, incomprehensible thing…" Calamitas lifted her hand to the mass, and her flames built up on it. But, like her mana wasn't there, the fire disappeared.
"...?" She looked down at her hand, and the purple mass tensed. She jumped back, but it was faster and crashed into her. Landing on her chest.
She grabbed at it as the mass slipped under her breast, too slow. Its purple light faded after a moment.
Another headache pierced through her skull, worse than before, and she collapsed. She felt bile rise in her throat. Her mind numbed, and her body spasmed. Her right arm reached up, out of her control. Fire flew in towards it, coalescing into a ball, not unlike the one she used to slay Regulus.
Her other arm flew up and locked its hand around her right arm's wrist. Although she struggled to pull it down, she had no control over her mana.
"S-stop! I can't destroy the Jungle Base! I–!!" She pleaded with her arm, having rebelled against her will.
The world shook, haziness filling everything with a faint white light. Calamitas' right hand stilled for a moment before crushing the ball of fire building up and falling to the ground.
"...?! …!" She could hear something, but couldn't determine what it was.
She snapped her right arm into the air as a fist and felt an impact.
"?!??!!"
The thing she heard screeched, and then she listened to a fundamentally different thing say something.
"..."
That one sounded angry. The moment Calamitas thought so, she felt something smash into her cheek.
"HUh?! What?! Does Yharim require me?!" Calamitas stood up instantly, which happened to be another medical bed. She got terrible Déjà vu from that alone.
She looked down at the figures surrounding her and saw the Ferris wheel healer, Emilia, and Natsuki Subaru. Ferris was holding a reddening cheek which a whimpering expression and Natsuki Subaru held his hand up like it was a weapon. Emilia stood behind him.
She was in an actual building this time, and only one bed was adjacent. A woman with green hair and black veins stretching from under her skin lay there. She seemed very important for some reason, and Calamitas could see the two curses on her. Wisping off of her body like a dark fog. Poor girl.
"Alright," Calamitas sighed and sat down on the edge of the bed. "What happened?"
-x-X-x-
"Okay, so let me get this straight. It's been 4 days since Regulus, and the whole plan for journeying to the Sage's Watchtower was stalled for my sake?"
"Yeah, Anastasia-San really wanted your firepower that we talked up. Though she was mildly suspicious of your random appearance," Subaru leaned in. "She'll probably pay you a visit to ascertain for herself whether you're trustworthy."
"And… Reinhardt left…?"
"Quite strange, isn't it?" Felix lifted a hand to his chin. "He seemed the most curious out of all of us about you. I didn't think he was going to leave with the Sin Archbishop before you even woke up."
"Ah, I apologize for hitting you, earlier." Calamitas awkwardly said. Indeed, earlier, when she was asleep, the voices and the shaking were those in the room trying to wake her up. Because she was physically charging another Brimstone Ray, and threatened to let it off inside the building. She didn't blame Subaru for slapping her awake. It was the right call.
Apparently, before she arrived in this world, this fight between them and the 'Witch's Cult' had progressed thoroughly. A Sin Archbishop is one of the leaders of the cult, Regulus was one of them. There was five of them, though they swore up and down that Regulus was the strongest one. They'd managed to capture one of them, which is why they required Reinhardt to transport her. He'd left before the verdict of her suspicion. Which also meant that the little girl with blonde hair was one of them, because of course there was another one that was interested in her.
"As long as you didn't release that fire magic inside my work area, it's the least of my worries." Felix shrugged.
"Even so, I shouldn't have struck you."
"Apology accepted, o' patient of mine," A dangerous glint painted itself into his eyes. "Don't you dare come to me in a condition like that again, do you hear me?! I won't be on standby for the injured where you're going, so you could actually die! Do you want to die?!"
"...No, I don't."
Felix nodded. "Good, I better not hear about how you died the instant you met the Sage or so help me, I will find your ghost and haunt you for the rest of your ghost-life!"
"..." Calamitas leaned back a smidgen from the intense healer. "Understood…?"
He nodded again, stepped back, turned to the woman on the other bed, and cast his magic on her.
"You know that whatever magic you're casting won't assist with either of those curses, right?" Calamitas called out to him, and he promptly froze.
"You… do you know how to remove them?!" He stood up in a zeal, and his demeanor changed to something in a frenzy. "If so, tell me! Please, tell me so I can heal Crusch-Sama!"
"Oh, if you want a curse removed… Sorry, but I'm not your person," The witch had to crush the hope in his eyes, and she felt a slight pang of guilt.
He gritted his teeth, and his face contorted into a snarl. "Then don't tell me what will or won't work! If you don't know a thing about them, then you shouldn't be talking about curses!"
The Brimstone Witch felt her mood plummet. "Mistakenly believing that your magic will somehow start helping with removing it when you've clearly tried before is hypocrisy. You don't know the first thing about curses either."
"Y-you…" Felix stood up to his full height and started marching over. Emilia stood in his way and held her hands up, trying to calm him down with a few words.
"Cal… Please don't argue with the person who reattached your arm…" Subaru tried to soothe her the same way Emilia was trying to placate Felix.
"He did? I thought Emilia did that?"
"While Emilia-Tan is great, her skill in Water Magic isn't good enough to reattach limbs and restore blood."
"...Shit…" Calamitas winced as Felix huffed and turned back to his lady. Emilia sighed and turned back to the Brimstone Witch.
"Felix says… that he doesn't want you in here anymore, you're plenty healed, he said," Emilia recited. "Regardless, we've spent a lot of time waiting for you to wake up. We're going to need to make up for lost time!"
"I'm sorry about that, I'll try my hardest to make up for it." She stood from the side of the bed and received no pain from using her legs. She stomped a few times on the wooden floor, and no lances of pain ricocheted through her legs.
"What a marvel…" She lifted her right arm and swung it a few times. "This feels no different…"
"Miss Cal, have you never seen water magic before?" Emilia questioned her.
"No, such a thing was reserved for those few blessed, and I never was one of them. Also, stop calling me 'miss', that's reserved for older women."
"How old are you, then?" Subaru butted in. He was laughing as if he had just made a joke.
"Why are you laughing?" She questioned him, and both he and Emilia gaped at her answer. "I'm at least five-hundred and twelve."
"Wooow! You're over 500 years old? I'm only a little more than a hundred!" Emilia excitedly spoke, her eyes glistening.
"I see, then you're still quite young. Though that makes sense with your demeanor. Your character tells a lot." Calamitas remarked as they began moving towards the door.
"My character?"
"Emilia-Tan, she's calling you childish."
"What?! I am not childish!" Emilia indignantly refuted.
"Mhm," Calamitas nodded and stopped in the doorway, holding up the others. She turned to the one who healed her, still holding the hand of the bedridden Crusch.
"Thank you for healing me. Curses are something that I've had experience with before. Despite that, I've said something quite rude to you, I'm sorry." She bowed her head.
Calamitas waited for a moment.
He continued casting his magic.
She parted with a 'Have a good day'. Subaru and Emilia trailed after her.
When they left, Felix was left all alone with his lady.
"What's wrong with me…? She was looking so much better, too…" Felix bemoaned, looking down at his lady. Whose suffering still hadn't abated.
He and his mind were alone.
