Chapter 4: Prologue (Part 4)
Chapter Text
"You think I'm married." The hooded figure in front of him didn't ask a question. It was a statement.
"...Are you?" Subaru asked with a smile that Emilia can describe as 'trying'.
"Are you fucking serious right now?" Cal turned to Emilia. "Is he serious?"
"Subaru…" Emilia said in her slightly-disappointed voice; it wounded his heart a bit. "What if she doesn't know?"
"WHY WOULD I NOT KNOW IF I WAS MARRIED?! WHAT IS WRONG–" Cal's good arm snaked to her wounded one and applied a not-so-small amount of force directly. Subaru's face scrunched up as he thought he saw the bone move. "No, no. No, I get it. Both of you are making a fool out of me. Of course, what else is new."
"Uh…" Subaru decided not to comment that she sounded ready to rip them apart before self-harming right in front of them. "It's not what you think?"
"Then explain it. Explain it instead of asking inane questions that make no sense. Explain it instead of playing the part of a fool or of someone trying to make a fool out of me."
"Um, so basically, uh," Subaru began. "There's this guy named Regulus."
"The whiny annoying possession guy?"
"Yeah, that's him," Subaru nodded. "Anyway, he abducts women and forcefully marries them so he can use his authority; just think of it as magic but with conditions." In response to Cal tilting her head to his use of 'authority'. "So he puts his heart in women and he becomes invincible."
Cal was silent for a moment. Then, finally, she raised her hand and pulled her hood off her face. Her eyes looked clearer than before. Like she was present and not dazed from blood loss.
When Subaru first saw her, she didn't look present at all. Like her mind was in space or underwater. It was pretty clear why, though. She was pretty heavily injured at that point; Subaru had gone through that a few times, though not that he ever really… recovered in the traditional sense from it.
The horned woman searched him for any signs of intentional deceit or withholding information, and when she found none, opened her mouth, "Are you stupid?"
"Uh. No?"
"Listen, Subaru, was it? I highly doubt someone looked at me, like this," She motions down to her broken and battered body. "And decided that that was what they wanted in life. Also, I do have a heart in my chest, the one that's supposed to be there. So, if you two are done trying to play a practical joke on me. Leave."
She didn't look very amused. However, Subaru couldn't blame her. Who would believe someone had (likely) married them in their sleep and literally put their heart into them?
Subaru opened his mouth to convince her, but Emilia jumped in first, "Could you just let us check you, please? This could be very bad for lots of people!"
"Check me? For his heart?" Cal spoke dryly. She scrutinized Emilia's face before sighing, "Tell me how you'd do so, and if I accept, would you two finally leave me in peace?"
"Yes, you have my word," Subaru promised.
"Fine, how would you check?" The woman in front of us lifted her arm across her body, blinked for a moment, and looked down. Then, she sighed again and raised her hand to her neck to crack it instead.
"Um, I'd just have one of my spirits search your body, it won't even touch you, I promise!" Emilia jumped in and waved her hands.
Cal cocked a brow at her energetic manner and shrugged.
Emilia took that as permission, and one of the spirits moved forward. It was apparent even to Subaru that the woman was uncomfortable; she looked very on guard for even the slightest odd movement. When he thought about it, his subconscious told him it would be a horrible idea to betray her trust.
He'd learned that lesson, too.
The spirit moved close to her chest, and Cal didn't move a muscle. It glowed and grew faint a few times, before traveling back to Emilia's side. It was done.
"So? Is it in her chest?" Subaru asked his Lady. He hoped they wouldn't need to search the city from scratch to find his new 'wife'.
The woman in question looked at Emilia for her verdict, just wanting to get this over with, most likely.
"Yeah, it's her." Is all she said.
Cal froze for a moment and shook her head, stepping a foot back, "That can't be true, are you lying to me?"
"No, the spirits have done this before, Regulus' heart is in your chest. There's no mistake, but we can help you!" Emilia spoke with a soothing voice, trying to placate her.
"No, no, no, you're lying!" The woman shouted; her eyes widened but clouded over in– In desperation? "Always, always, always, always lying! You people know nothing of honesty! Trying to get me to lower my guard like I'm some kind of fool! Trying to do something to me whilst I'm unawares, wanting me to become a tool! Never again!!"
She placed her good hand on her face and screamed. Red flames erupted from her form, latching onto the surrounding walls and melting them away into ash almost instantly. It was like watching a solid object melt like an ice cube in a heatwave.
Her head snapped to attention on the two of them, Subaru and Emilia jumped back as her flames slowly crept up on them. Her eyes are unfocused; she's not seeing us!
She stepped forward before turning away from them, shaking her head and shuddering her body. "Not him, not him, not him, stop. Too much magic wasted, cease, cease, cease. Calm yourself, it's a waste."
Subaru felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned and saw Emilia motioning for him to do something. He almost wanted to say something quite mean to her, like 'how the hell do you expect me not to die?!' but he held his tongue.
He stepped forward anyway, nothing he couldn't undo, but he'd learned not to make decisions to throw his life away. "Cal, I want you to know that we aren't going to do anything except remove Regulus' heart. I promise you."
Her form froze up, as did the flames covering her. Everything. It was like she was frozen in time. She lowered her hand to her side and slowly turned.
Her eyes met his.
The pressure on his body increased a hundredfold. He felt hot and became slick with sweat in an instant. The woman in front of him was a monster. A creature of destruction, of calamity. He finally sees that now. Every neuron in his brain told him that she was something to be left well alone; a misstep would lead to death. Her eyes were clear, clear of any concern for life. She saw him for everything he was, and it felt inadequate. He felt so small in those eyes that couldn't care less for anything. The only thing he could see was the rage of an inferno. Ready to burn anything and everything to ash.
She blinked a few times and narrowed her eyes at him. Subaru was frozen as she awkwardly coughed in her hand.
"Ah, that's right, he couldn't possibly be here, neither of them could." She shook her head and snapped her fingers; her frozen flames vanished into the air. Leaning back, she took a deep breath. When she exhaled, she opened her eyes. They were back to being slightly murky. Subaru was thankful for it.
"Please forgive me. I must've frightened you quite a bit, I'm afraid I may have seen you as the only person that I cannot forgive. He would constantly expl–" Her eyes locked on something else, behind Subaru.
"Subaru!" He heard Emilia yell as she tackled him to the ground. Then, a whistling sound flew over where he just was. He looked over Emilia's shoulder and saw a deep gouge in the earth, which traveled as far as his eye could see.
Shaking, he turned to the origin point.
"That's all well and truly good, great even. However, you have caused a great offense on my person and possessions. For that, you must die. Don't you think?" The insufferable voice of the sinner who stood there entered Subaru's ears. "Now then, both you and the slut can die; buried together!"
He raised his arm in line with the both of them. Emilia tried to stand up, but she was too slow. Subaru gritted his teeth and closed his eyes for the inescapable embrace of death.
"Wait. Actually, there may be one other person I cannot forgive."
And in an instant, red flame covered everything but them.
It was foolish. Calamitas could admit it. So incredibly foolish. Dumb, even.
But when those two walked up to her and spouted nonsense— trying to get her to allow them to do something to her. Especially when he had that look in his eyes like him.
Like Yharim.
Like he was trying to calm down a little girl throwing a tantrum. Like he knew what was for the best like he was better than everyone else because he knew the correct course of action.
When Natsuki Subaru stepped forward and said they'd mess with her heart, which was already a mass of putrid and foolish emotion, her vision may have faltered for a moment. Once again, she was back in that throne room. Back in front of Yharim.
She'd like to say that it was necessary. But it was all obviously not. She was weak, both physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally; a mess, really. It was truly a child's actions, of someone who didn't hold any sort of grace. Someone full of self-disappointment.
But it was unforgivable. Does it matter that she acted like a child and threw tantrums and erased so much? Anyone can easily coerce a child into pulling a trigger simply because they don't understand the world. A child can be wronged.
But Calamitas wasn't a child. And both she and Yharim understood the world at its basic principles.
That oscillation between a child's emotional restraint and an adult's logic continuously clashed within her. It hadn't previously when she was cursed with the prevalent feeling of rage.
Clashes between these two things were made quite evident as to why they were happening when looking at it like that. The maturity that naturally comes with adulthood and learning about the world was locked beneath the stunted emotional growth due to the curse. Calamitas had burned down entire kingdoms, countries, and worlds due to her wrath. But now she could see why it happened so frequently.
What would you do with a woman with the emotional maturity of a child? Telling her to grow up would make sense, but not if doing so caused her to destroy your country. Children don't make sense to Calamitas, and she doesn't make sense to those she massacred.
Or, at least, she didn't. But, now, that mature voice is back in the deepest crevices of her mind. It told her that getting angry would only exacerbate problems and that doing so would be a mistake.
And she tried! She did! No one can fault her for not trying. Every time she got angry, she'd hurt herself to take her mind off it. And, she showed incredible restraint when that boy acted like Yharim; she could calm down. Imagine that! The Witch of Calamity can quell her anger and not kill countless people!
Her anger was reserved for Yharim and Yharim alone. That's what she thought, at least.
Again, she knew it was a bad idea. And again, she knew that she would majorly regret it when her anger cooled down. It just felt so good to send that Brimstone Hellblast into that arrogant, annoying, snobbish, bloviating loser who only likes to hear himself speak.
"Natsuki Subaru, and his witchling," Cal turned to the two looking around wildly at the flames. Staring at her with terrified expressions. She snapped her fingers to cut the mana supplying the fire in the opposite direction of Regulus, granting them an open path to flee. "Leave, do not throw your life away like Reinhardt. I have some anger to run through before we can continue our talks from before."
Subaru froze when their eyes met, gulped, and stood alongside Emilia. "He'll be truly invincible if his heart is still inside you. So if you can, just buy as much time as possible. I don't know if you know this, but Reinhardt can't be killed, so he'll return." He warned her.
Calamitas nodded with an "I'll keep that in mind." as a figure stepped through the flames. Regulus' face was contorted in rage, shaking and shuddering with wrath that made her flames pale in comparison.
"Let's get out of here!" Subaru tugged on Emilia, who quickly picked up the pace through the open path that Calamitas made with her flames.
"As if I'd let you get away!" Regulus yelled as he made to run after them, but Calamitas stopped him when she stepped in his path.
"Surely, you aren't ignoring me? You blathering fool," The Witch of Calamity spoke in a voice too calm for her raging mental state. Natsuki Subaru said to waste time for Reinhardt to come in and deal with him, but that won't help alleviate some of her rage, now will it?!
Regulus stopped, turned, and met Calamitas' eyes with a questioning expression as if he wasn't enraged just a moment ago. "Huh? Are you speaking to me when you say 'fool'?" He blinked, and his eyes lit up in recognition. "Ah, No. 293, it's you! I should've recognized you, but you were wearing such clothing and the slut and wife murderer were taking up so much of my attention you see, I didn't recognize you. Anyway, where's the one you're calling a fool?" He turned and searched the area like there was anything but flames and ash. "Ah, were you calling the wife murderer a fool? You are correct. He is indeed a fool with no sense of social decency, I'm very glad that you could see that, anyway, could you wait just for a little while longer? Your caring husband mus–"
Another Brimstone Fireblast launched into his chest, exploding in a brilliant display of fire, reducing everything but the stone beneath their feet into ash in a dozen-meter radius. Calamitas was caught up in it too, but she was used to her magic; it wouldn't damage her.
"You…" Regulus stepped forward, utterly unharmed. His clothes weren't the slightest bit burnt, nor was his hair even the tiniest bit singed. Calamitas' eyes widened in shock at how incredible his invincibility truly was. It seemed similar to the Witch of Envy's, but her's was a bit different.
"I was just talking, as one does. Yet, you would dare interrupt me?! I knew it! I knew I shouldn't have taken you as my wife without making sure of your virginity!" Regulus snarled and raised his hand. "I'll have to search for another wife, one that is truly up to standard!"
He brought his hand down, intent on splitting Calamitas in two. But she was still trying to comprehend what he had just said.
Virginity?
Hers?
Her body moved on instinct, dodging his strike that would have killed her.
His wife?
Her?
Raging, Regulus reached down and grabbed a handful of ash, tossing it into the air.
Calamitas' magic propelled her into the air, where she watched as the ash was sent forward at light speed, shredding everything in its path.
She slowly turned to look at Regulus, who looked around for her, not seeing her jump up into the sky through the ash cloud. He was ranting and raving like a mad dog, screaming about his rights and her virginity of the soul and body and other nonsense.
She was going to fucking kill him.
She reached into the open air. The space rippled, and her hand traveled through it, searching for a particular book. The rough texture of the cover greeted her hand, and she grabs it.
The book had a black cover with no words engraved on the front. To an outsider, it may have been a nameless book, utterly unremarkable. But someone with magical experience would shudder in the presence of it. It's something disgusting that she created, but it didn't matter to her now. All she cared about was to make the insignificant worm below her suffer.
She felt the curse worm in her mind for the first time in a few days.
Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Kill him.
MAKE HIM SUFFER.
The little voice in the back of her mind failed to stop her as she opened the book. But, unfortunately, she didn't have enough mana to use it for long, and she'd undoubtedly come to regret the amount of recovery time she'd need to bounce back from this if she would even survive the aftermath at all.
But she didn't care.
The book's pages flew wildly, turning the pages at an incredibly fast degree, seemingly never reaching the end. Finally, she muttered one word, to which the book it was named after exploded with magic.
"Heresy."
And out of the book came flying a bright white light.
"The Calamitous Witch." Spoke an ethereal voice, watching the witch fly into the sky, pull out a book, and explode in a fantastical light. The wraith in purple moved around in the shadows.
It was shocked, stunned, and unable to believe it. Something that Signus could never explain, but the wraith wanted to know, how did she sustain such damage? However, it's also an opportunity. There was no need to worry about reporting back to the Devourer if Signus could take advantage of the situation.
When would it have such luck again?
Coiling around itself, the wraith lay in wait for the right moment.
This is stupid. Asinine, utterly foolish.
The light from the book flew up into the sky before abruptly being torn down towards the surface. Then, like lightning to a lightning rod, they locked onto Regulus' raving form and pierced him.
Regulus looked down at his body, riddled with light pushing against his form, straining to break through his skin and skewer his organs.
By simply turning, all of the light spears broke from his body. Like not a force in the universe could cause a single hair to move from atop his head. The Sin Archbishop looked up at the source of the light and saw his wife, his mistake. Snarling, he lifts his hand, intent on ending things.
But Heresy wasn't done. The spears of light which still floated around his body all cracked up and down their lengths, exploding. The shockwaves passed away from the immovable object and flowed into the ashen ground, flinging its contents into the air.
"You miserable wretch!" Regulus swiped his hand through the ash, but more filled their place as the particles flew away from him.
"You miserable fool who has no idea his place in the world." A voice whispered in his ear.
The Sin swung around at his wife's voice, shredding everything in that direction, "You think this will make a difference? You are merely the temporary holder of my heart. Nothing more, and easily replaceable."
The ash shivered. But Regulus paid it no mind.
"I understand, the feeling of wrath and the anger that one feels when they've been wronged. Few times have I not understood when my possessions were at risk. That feeling. Yet, by divine providence, I have been given the ability to rectify that, to set even the value. To demand compensation."
The man in the ash sighed,
"Why must you do this? I merely wished to set straight the record, to bring about humility in those who know none. Those who cannot keep their Greed to themselves. I would've been there for you, I am your husband, and you are my wife. Yet, you'd spit in my face? In the face of love? Utterly reprehensible."
He waited for a response. The ash swirled in the air, leaving him feeling like he was in the ashes of his marriage. But through ash would be the opportunity to rebuild things anew, with new wives and new possessions. He just needed to take a step forward.
And so he did. Regulus began to walk through the ash.
"I don't mind where I am in the world. My place is by my wives' side, and theirs' by mine. If that place is in the background, perfectly content with all that I am and have? That's all that I wish for, peace and quiet along with my happiness. Yet, you'd trample on that. My own wife, who doesn't take in consideration her husband's feelings and who decides to side with the murderers of his other wives? Do you truly wish to throw your life away?"
He sounded deeply saddened. And he truly was. Such a waste of a wife, a pretty face that Regulus could no longer love. But no compensation must be made when someone breaks their own possession. It's simply how things are.
He still heard no reply. Yet, he didn't stop talking to her. There was only one reason for this. His heart wasn't beating in his chest. Therefore, she was still alive, and he needed to correct that.
Something gold flashed in the corner of his eye before slamming into his side. "Ghhhk!"
Regulus' body flung away, skipping across the ground before coming to a stop. Ash lightly covered the ground in ash, and the air seemed suffused entirely with it.
The Sin Archbishop pushed himself off the ground and quickly looked from where he was flung, but nothing was there.
Was that even where he was before? He couldn't make heads or tails of anything; it was all grey!
The ground was grey stone, the rubble and the air and sky were grey! He could barely even see past his own body. If he weren't immune to everything, he'd likely be grey too!
The plain and boring man put his right foot on the ground and stood up on it, but he heard something.
Thwip!
Something crashed into the back of his knee, and he folded like a chair. He fell onto his back, staring at the sky. His head cracked the ground upon impact, and his eyes registered something grey approaching rapidly.
It fell upon him and smashed into his chest, quickly burrowing him into the ground. Dirt, stone, mud, and other material flew into the sky as a replacement for the Sin Archbishop. He finally could recognize what he was looking at, but it made no more sense than before.
It was a dark grey skull with horns and a purplish-red fire propelling it into him. Dirt filled in after him, falling to the law of gravity that he could do without. He scowled; what did she think this would do?
He reached up his left arm and swiped the skull, shattering it into a million pieces, quickly fading into smoke.
She can't do anything; why does she delay the inevitable? It was foolish, foolhardy, it was Pride, and there was no salvaging her. Truly, such a low-grade woman could never be a proper wife.
Regulus began his ascent to the surface, gripping the dirt and pulling himself up. He had no need for air, no need for gravity, no need for a natural grip on the soil. He was able to climb up regardless.
"Do you truly think I'll let dirt rise from the ground? It's amusing to see a worm crawling where it shouldn't, but it should be returned to where it is meant to be."
A muffled voice reached Regulus' ears, and he wanted to split her in two. He grabbed a handful of dirt and threw it where he heard her voice. His authority imbued the soil, and it exploded out the top of the hole. Though it missed his target, he didn't mind. This isn't how he wanted to do things.
He wanted to watch her face turn from gloating about victory to despair. To horror and worry. He wanted her to have a slow, painful death so she could reflect on all her faults. He would do the same to all others who wronged him. The shameless prostitute, the wife-murderers, his mistake of a wife, and every other person in this city, he'd exact retribution upon them all.
He didn't need to rush. He was perfectly content to take one step at a time.
Regulus reached up, grabbed another handle of dirt, and activated Lion's Heart at the same time he pulled. Gravity, friction, mass, and all world laws failed to apply to him as he flew upwards through the dirt. It slowly transformed from earth to mud, then stone. And then, air.
When the Archbishop willed, so the laws of the world obeyed, he had absolute control over everything. He allowed gravity to grip him again, and he touched the stone ground; no worse for wear.
The air was clear of ash, and he took a deep breath as though he was a man who needed to. Breathing was simply natural and instinctual. Regulus wasn't one to fault instinct.
"Come now, are you done?" Regulus took out his pinky and put it into his ear as if he was bored and called out. "Surely you know this is futile? That there's no point to this? Keeping out of sight, continuously attacking from behind or with surprise, have you no shame? Are you just killing time before you die? Trying to save as many people in the city as possible? Or are you just trying to make an impact on the Sin Archbishop of Greed so that you'd be remembered by legend as one felled by him? I couldn't possibly comprehend it myself, why throw away your life?"
He continued to speak his hypocrisy, not taking anything seriously except infringements against his person or his possessions. A fountain of despicable thoughts and beliefs, morals and ideas, philosophy and false humility continued to spew from his mouth. Poison.
"I have no patience for someone like you, if you wish to die so badly then come forth. If not, you may wait until I've dispatched the whore and her pathetic excuse for a knight, until then, feel free to wallow in your own patheti–"
"I thought I told you," A voice hissed in his ear, dripping with venom, feeling something poke up into the small of his back. "Dirt belongs with dirt, wriggle and writhe like a worm."
Regulus spent no time shocked or frozen by her sudden appearance; he only rotated and swiped his arm in a diagonal line towards the wounded woman covered in blood and sweat. Exertion on her face, she was panting and sweating like a mutt. It was utterly repulsive.
However, within her eyes was a fire, a determination that had been watching for his attack. Arm moving in such a transparent way, she ducked under it. But it was of no matter to him. Seeing her attack coming meant he could reduce every effect of it to zero.
She tilted her staff and stabbed it into his gut, which didn't move at all, having no laws to affect him. He opened his mouth before his mind snapped to attention. Staff? When did she have a staf–
"Perdition."
The ground underneath him erupted. Destabilizing his footing and golden light in the form of horned skulls exploded from the ground. Regulus stumbled for a moment as his opponent flew directly away from him, holding a grin that had no place on her face.
Regulus held his hand like a blade and threw it skyward along where she was. But in an instant, one of the light skulls smashed into his hand, changing the course of his aim. His attack that was perfectly centered on her form, which should have ended it once and for all, was altered outside his control.
"Tch," He brought his hand down and saw that she was no longer in his field of view. The skulls of light persisted around him, hovering almost harmlessly. But Regulus swiped his head across them, breaking them up into motes of light that vanished almost instantly after.
"What utter nonsense, to continue getting in my way when all that does is delay the inevitable. I can't understand that train of thought at all." He sighed and started after her.
But when he raised his leg, the ground exploded with more skulls that smashed into the back of it. Making him lift his leg higher than he wanted. "Huh?"
He looked down while holding his leg in the air and saw more skulls. They were hovering almost lazily next to him. Was this some sort of magic? He'd never seen anything like it.
He lowered his leg, and in an instant, many skulls sped around it and crashed into the top of his thigh, his leg broke into the ground, and he fell forward. "Whoa?!"
While falling forward, some crashed into his back, causing his forward momentum to increase. His foot was still in the ground, he tripped and fell on his face, the stone he landed on cracking under his authority.
"What the hell…?" Regulus muttered to himself, raising his foot out of the ground. But, unfortunately, an impact sent his leg higher into the air than he wanted. He put one of his arms to the ground to push himself up, but while doing so, the ground under him erupted, sending him into the air. Then he could finally see all around him. There were so many skulls that he couldn't keep track.
Gold, grey, silver, skulls of all shapes and sizes. And when gravity took hold, they flew into action. The Archbishop's eyes widened, "L-lion's heart!"
They crashed into him, not sending him anywhere at all, disappearing against his body. He fell to the ground as they hit every part of him. Hand, leg, thigh, neck, back, stomach, face, crotch, feet. They didn't stop until he landed on the ground and stopped moving. He gritted his teeth. What the hell was going on?! What kind of sick, twisted magic is this?!
"You look a little confused," A voice said above him. He craned his head to look up and saw his wife. She had a smug grin on her face, despite looking exhausted. Her entire being radiated superiority as she literally and figuratively looked down on him. "Can't figure it out? I doubt an idiot like you could learn anything during combat. Making snap decisions probably isn't your strong suit."
"Y-you damn–!!" Regulus snarled and moved to stand up, but a skull crashed into his leg, and he fell down again in an awkward position. Then, opting to kill her, he flung his hand out, her smug face not even taking note of the danger she was in. She was dead, utterly dead!!
An impact shifted his aim, and he struck just beside her. Her smile grew as his frustration increased. He swiped across her body, but she was already in the air as his arm was ransacked by many different impacts, causing his arm to snap across his body.
"You seem to be having trouble there. Is there a problem? Can you not see? I'm simply right here, just strike me." His wife smirked down at him with so much smug radiating off her. He wanted to punish her. He wanted to kill her!
But he couldn't. He'd try to strike her, and he'd overshoot. He'd try and stand up but he'd fall over. He tried to roll over but he'd get sent faster and faster until he stopped. He tried many different things simultaneously, but he'd be sent into the air, or writhe on the ground.
He couldn't regain control over his body; he couldn't do anything!
"You can't keep something like this up forever!" He shouted at her because he couldn't do anything else. "When you can't keep this up! You'll see the consequen–!!"
A skull smashed into the underside of his jaw, snapping it shut.
"Ah-?! What are yo–!"
Another smashed into it, forcibly stopping his speaking.
"Stop what you're doing thi–!!"
And again.
"Stop talking." She hissed down at him with enough venom to poison a water supply. Her eyes beheld no remorse as she stared down at him. Her previous smile had long disappeared into a sneer.
"You are, without a doubt, the absolute worst thing I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. Do you truly think that you can continue speaking for so long and not reduce those who make the mistake of listening to a cross-eyed state? That they'll do anything but give you a nod befitting a toddler who doesn't understand anything? Filling up the silence with bloviating nonsense akin to white noise in the abyss! Utterly menial, and completely pointless!"
Her hand twitched and spasmed. Her cloak billowed in the wind, and ash kicked into the air. Regulus couldn't do anything but listen; every action he did was met with repercussions he couldn't control before the subsequent chain of uncontrollable movements.
She clenched her one good hand into a fist. "I would've been fine with everything else! Some people are just fools because they know nothing else, but you! YOU! YOU LIKEN ME TO YOUR WIFE?!"
Flames coiled around her body and writhed with every word spit. They were shooting out in random directions, destroying things because he himself couldn't be killed.
"WHAT'S IT TO YOU?! THE STATE OF MY VIRGINITY?! SPEWING ASININE REMARKS ABOUT LOVE AND HAPPINESS! YOU WOULDN'T KNOW THE FIRST THING ABOUT EITHER!"
Regulus tried to speak, but another skull slammed into his jaw. He moved about in a frenzied manner, trying to move, to kill this miserable woman. But he was always met with a skull forcing his movements uncontrollably.
"You call me a number, you try to rob me of my autonomy. Of my freedom. Are you just so daft that you never considered that anyone, not just me, would go against you with all they have? How preposterous, ludicrous, absurd!"
She sent Hellfire down on him. Wanting him to die, but he was unable. His heart was still in her chest.
The flames cleared, and he was still unscathed, staring up at her with rage, indignation, and all sorts of other ridiculous things like she wasn't all those things and more.
She took a deep breath and slowly blew it out of her nose. "You may be powerful, more powerful than most creatures upon this and every other world. But you are, without any uncertainty, the weakest thing I have ever set my sights on. The most pitiful creature. Go to hell."
She looked down at him. He stared up at her. His complete silence caused her to be a little wearier. Finally, his hand twitched, and her eyes locked onto him grabbing a rock, crushing it into powder.
Faster than the skulls could follow, he threw the powder toward the woman with a pretty face. The projectile covered his entire vision, launching forward at impossible speeds. The cloud parsed through, but there was no blood, no gore, and no heartbeat.
Regulus looked to and fro as far as her damnable magic would allow, but a missile fell from the sky, landing in front of him.
He looked at it inquisitively. Then, finally, he recognized it and started laughing, "Hahaa, HAHAHA!"
Covered in blood was the right arm of his wife. Cut off from the shoulder.
