Chapter Text
"Those scum… How dare they, how dare they…" Regulus muttered to himself as he hid behind corners and walked closer to the ground than he had ever walked before.
It was utterly unlike him. The Regulus hundreds of years to a mere day ago would've never even considered doing such a thing. It was not only beneath him but also insulting to even think about.
However, "Guh… That damned monster…" The sword saint placed him in a troublesome position.
He'll get his reward for being patient. Then, finally, he'll be allowed to tear apart not only the whore and the worm masquerading as a knight but also that damnable sword saint. And he's able to with his authority of Greed. But only if he was able to use it to its fullest potential.
Which led him back to getting angry once more. "Those damn bastards! My possessions, my wives!"
His ability worked to his favor only if he could place his heart into a woman he acknowledged as his wife. The fact that his heart was inside of his chest meant that his wives were taken from him. His possessions were destroyed!
Indeed, he's not greedy. Despite being the seat of Greed in the Witch's Cult, he's never asked for anything in his life. Instead, he's perfectly content with himself and everything that's his, meager as they are. But if the universe itself were to offer something to him, as if he was to be rewarded for his actions, then why would he refuse?
Everything that's his, his rights, possessions, his person. A violation against them would drive him into a rage. Would anyone place the blame on him? Of course not; how could they? It's only suitable that others stick with their possessions and him with his.
However, if someone were to come in and steal his possessions or even outright destroy them, they must be crucified for his peaceful life to return to the way it was.
Those filthy wife-murderers! Regulus gritted his teeth and began to gnash them. Neither enjoying nor denying the feeling of his teeth moving for the first time in a hundred years.
They will indeed get their just desserts. It's simply the universe correcting the slight against him, whom it has so rewarded.
But Regulus was against playing the fool. He would allow no chance for those who've sinned to escape or to fight him off. He's invincible if he can place his heart inside of his wife. But, unfortunately, he'd made the mistake of having all his wives in one place. He had preached to the sword saint and his fellow wife-murderer that all the women in front of them were his wives, which, once the pathetic one figured out his heart was his weakness, he had gone ahead and slaughtered all of them.
Yes, he had spoken politely to them and given away the information that each woman seated was one of his wives. It was marriage, after all! How could they kill them all when he was just conducting the sacred act of matrimony?!
Regulus couldn't let the wife-murderers escape. He would not allow it. And despite his inane thought processes, he still had a level of priorities.
Kill the wife-murderers.
Kill the whore.
Kill everyone in the city.
Go back to his peaceful life with his new wife/wives.
It was only fitting. Actions beget consequences, and the result of disrespecting his possessions is death. A content man would never let the source of his contentedness go quietly into the night. And if lost, he would avenge it.
The biggest problem, first and foremost, is the sword-saint monster. Regulus killed him! And he didn't die?! It didn't make any sense at all!
But, at the same time, even the monster couldn't kill him when his heart wasn't in his chest. If the beast had attacked while they were in the sky…
Regulus felt an involuntary shudder run through his body.
Without his power working at full potential, even Regulus had to admit that he may be unable to kill him. After all, when he still had his wives, he was only able to strike the sword-saint a total of 2 times. Moreover, their battle lasted longer than 5 seconds which is the limit to his power with his heart in his chest.
A minor mishap led him into the sky, seemingly defeated. But there was an easy solution. So easy, so simple. All he had to do was find another wife in the city, someone the wife-murderers would never expect, and leave them.
It pained Regulus' heart to think about his wife, who would miss him when he was gone. But he must be the consequences of their actions. Besides, a dutiful wife would wait for her husband when he came back to her while surrounded by the city's ruins. She'd only feel joy at that moment.
Yes, yes, indeed. It's all pre-ordained. Life without consequence cannot be called life at all. And one who goes against others must be eliminated for the sake of the peace of the greater of humanity.
And so, in the dead of night, Regulus reached the medical tents that the Knights of Lugunica had set up.
It took a while for Regulus to find something he could use to his advantage. The Knights of Lugunica would never put an innocent in danger. Especially someone they've already saved. But more importantly, they would never think to look for his new wife in the wounded tent. She would be none-the-wiser, and he'd finally be able to bring retribution to all those who've crossed his possessions.
He swept aside the opening to the tent and saw no guards nor knights that he would've needed to silence. It was convenient, yet suspicious. However, Regulus shrugged it off. It must've been another sign from the universe that he was on the right path to being the wife murderers' karmic retribution.
Whether or not he would actually find wife material in the wounded tent of all places was to be determined. But if the universe was truly with him, it would grant him one, even if she were temporary.
He inspected the nearest woman's face. No, too many scratches.
He walked a few more rows of the wounded. One who was still awake looked at him in confusion, a woman. "Huh? Who are you?"
"No, too much emotion." The sin-archbishop muttered to himself and continued walking. The woman watched him walk away with a confused expression.
No. No. Not enough. Nose too big. Too many blemishes.
He continued walking, intent on being patient with the universe as he himself is patient and content.
No. No. No. No.
He paused for a brief moment when he spotted a demi-human woman's face, but after a moment, he continued walking. Too animalistic.
He continued walking.
No. No. No. No.
Regulus began to fall into a confused frenzy. He searched and searched for her. She was here, so he'd find her if he was patient. But hadn't he been patient, himself? How come she hadn't appeared yet? A wife is meant to make her husband happy, to not play games nor waste his time. So why hadn't she appeared before hi–
And that's when he came across an unconscious grey-skinned half-elf wrapped up from head to toe in bandages. Her face was untouched, and that's all that mattered to Regulus.
Yes. Yes, she was the one. She had the correct face.
But something else bothered him. Her body was damaged, his possession was damaged. Again, someone had hurt and nearly destroyed one of his possessions.
Oh, he was going to kill them, no doubt about that. He was karmic retribution on the side of the universe itself. He would maim and destroy the wife-murderers, the slut, and this city. The only one he would allow to live was his new wife. And how she fits every criterion completely, save for one. But the universe was with him, so he knew the answer was 'yes'.
She was given to him by the universe itself. So why wouldn't he accept her in marriage?
Regulus felt his chest still, and his body became invincible. No effect lingered, and nothing changed his current appearance, his clothes were still dirtied, but that mattered little compared to the retribution he would bring about. His heart had successfully entered his new wife, and while he would kiss her, he would wait until the wedding. Such things must be properly done. That's how one differentiates oneself from the whores and murderers.
He laughed quietly. He would finally be able to kill those who had acted against his possessions and person. The sound of his heart no longer resounded in his ears.
"Y-yes, that's him right there." The Sin Archbishop heard a woman's voice speak frantically. Regulus turned around to see the woman who was conscious earlier pointing at him with a few armed guards behind her.
"Haaah? What's this?" Regulus cocked his head to the side.
"Sir," One of the guards stepped forward. "I'm going to have to escort you outside. The only ones allowed in here are the injured, healers, and loved ones."
"Oh, then I'm allowed. You said loved ones? Me and my wife are very much in love. She has the perfect attributes for me. If she didn't then we wouldn't be married, no? The act of matrimony is the sacred ritual of two lives becoming one with one another. If one were to marry one that isn't compatible, then there's no reason for each person to bother." Regulus smiled and nodded.
The guards looked at the archbishop in confusion as if trying to understand him and his point of view.
The first knight spoke up again. "Ah, well, uh. Then you're definitely allowed in here then, sir. But before we leave, could you point out which patient is your wife?"
Regulus listened for a moment before gently lifting his hand. The knight's confusion grew as the man in front of them seemingly reached out for a handshake, only for his hand to disappear.
"Huh?" was all they said before their bodies split into perfectly cut shapes and plastered against the ground with a sickly spelching noise. How pathetic, trying to gather information on where his wife is. He won't make that same mistake twice. She'll stay hidden for as long as he wants her to because what else would a wife do?
"Eh?" The woman brought in the guards looked down at all their corpses and parts. Their blood reached her feet and got plastered over the tent's walls.
"Hm?" One patient woke up and looked around as if half-asleep. He blinked a few times as he processed the corpses and blood and guts and–
"WHOA!?!" He screamed out, rattling other patients awake, who did the same as he— processed the bodies. The mass panic of screams and attempts to crawl away from their strewn across forms. Some even yelled out to ask what happened as they had bandages over their eyes.
The mass hysteria played out in real-time in front of Regulus' eyes. He opened his mouth once more to admonish these people.
"You know, quite the racket will awaken my wife. It may even bring more knights here, which would go against what I'm trying to do. When someone is trying to accomplish something, getting in the way is an affront to them, you know? Causing them to waste not only time, but their patience and could even cause them to fail in their mission. Such a thing is quite against me. Against my rights as a person, as a husband, such a thing requires compensation, no?"
Regulus sneered. And a few moments later, he exited a completely quiet medical tent. Intent on finding the two at the top of his list of priorities.
"...hm?" He noticed someone approaching him. It was a simple witch cultist in the usual hooded garments. Regulus shrugged and continued walking, but before they passed each other, the cultist reached up a hand.
"Do you know where Calamitas, the Witch of Calamity, is?"
Regulus' face took on an appearance of annoyance. Who was this person who thought they were so blessed that they could interrupt someone trying to go somewhere?
"Did you just stop me while I was walking? Here I was, trying to reach my destination, using my effort, using my time. You didn't even start dialogue as equals. When asking someone something, a certain level of understanding is required, no? To call out to me when you didn't even introduce yourself shows your complete lack of understanding of social etiquette."
"...?" The cultist seemed mildly taken aback. He scrutinized Regulus' conduct for a moment before nodding. "Oh, I see. Forgive me. I've done something irreparably damaging to our relationship."
Regulus was surprised at the cultist's acknowledgment of their faults. It even helped raise his mood from earlier. "Ah, don't worry about it. It's nothing. When someone asks for forgiveness with an apologetic attitude, it's only natural that they be forgiven. When one makes a mistake, acknowledging that mistake gives them room to grow, for future battles and future mistakes. None is perfect, though I am perfectly content. If the universe saw fit to teach a lesson to me, would I spit in its face? No. One learns from mistakes, just as one must forgive others when they apologize. Unless the sin is great, unless the sin goes against humanity as a whole, then there would be no forgiveness. Don't you agree?"
The cultist pondered for a moment before nodding. "Yes, that is correct. There is logic behind actions, and actions acted on logic are correct. My name is Signus."
Regulus replied, "I am a Sin Archbishop of the Witch's Cult, representing Greed, Regulus Corneas."
With their mutual understanding, Signus asks the same question from earlier.
"Do you know where Calamitas, the Witch of Calamity, is?"
"Ah, I'm afraid not. I've never even heard of such a name before. Is that all?"
The cultist cocked his head to the side,
"Then have you seen a woman with white hair, dark ashy skin, and twin ashen horns coming out of her head, most likely wearing red robes?"
"..." Regulus frowned. The cultist described something similar to his wife, wasn't he? He was trying to get him to say where his wife was!
The archbishop quickly bisected the cultist trying to pry out the information Regulus had learned not to share. He continued on his way and walked past the corpse as if he'd never met them before.
After a few moments, the cloak of the cultist shuddered. It turned a purplish-red and expanded into a large floating figure.
The figure shifted for a moment. Then, six ethereal dots appeared where a person's face would be, and four spikes shot out of its back.
Signus looked back where Regulus had walked off. "This requires more investigation."
And so, Signus, Envoy of the Devourer, trailed after him.
When Calamitas finally realized she was conscious, she didn't want to move. She awoke to find herself not wanting to be awake. She hadn't had that kind of peaceful sleep in years. Constantly tossing and turning, always seeing those she's killed. She spent the time better off training to develop magic that lessened her need for sleep just to escape those dreams.
It seemed that the healer truly knew what he was doing. She slept like she had no problems left in the world. There was no pain, agony, or memories that she gave any attention to while unconscious.
Equally liberating and equally imprisoning. She wasn't aware of any happenings while asleep, but that also meant she slept peacefully. No guard up, no awareness. She was utterly defenseless.
And honestly… She wouldn't have minded if that sleep stretched on for eternity. But alas, that sleep is only allowed to the dead. And… death is scary. The consequences for dying, especially for her would be catastrophic.
But the rest lies beyond it. That calmness of mind and body, to not feel anything ever again. It felt like it was calling to her, she, who was tied down to life by nothing. Nothing she wanted, but everything she had to be.
If Calamitas didn't have the primal instincts of an animal desperately fighting to live no matter what, perhaps it would be easier to accept that there's nothing for her.
That's how she should've felt, but she still felt that despair upon the threat of death. She still desperately wished to live. In hindsight, it felt wrong, but at the moment, it was all that encompassed her mind. She wanted to live, but for what?
To what end? For what reason does she wish so? Is it merely an instinct that all biological creatures possess? Or did she bury something deep inside of her that wanted to accomplish something? She wanted to do something? Her? There were only things she had to do. Orders she must obey above all else, but--
The witch gradually grew frustrated with herself. Tossing and turned in her bed, though carefully enough that she didn't jostle her left arm. She was not going back to sleep now.
With a groan, she opened her eyes and sat up. Calamitas blinked the blurriness out of her eyes before the abstract shapes became defined enough to recognize what she was looking at.
Corpses. Loads and loads of corpses.
Men, women, and children all cut into chunks littered the ground. The tent was dyed red, and the floor was matted with still fresh blood. The smell of iron permeated through the air, heavy enough that Calamitas should've recognized it when she regained consciousness.
She looked around at all the horrified faces of the dead. Still wet tears poured down their bodiless heads, contorted into ever-silent screams. And those were the ones who still had a recognizable shape to comprehend.
At one point in the tent, there was a seemingly huge mess of body parts and meat, far too much to be one person, but impossible to tell how many or who was inside of it.
Calamitas felt a cold shiver run up her back as she noticed the deep gouges in the ground. All originating from near her position. So incredibly unnatural were the gouges and so clean that they would have to have been from some sort of magic.
The Brimstone Witch followed one of the gouges with her eyes. It continued up to the ceiling of the tent and went on until she couldn't see past the building across the street. So it either meant that the attack stopped when it went through that building… Or it meant that the attack ignored it and continued far deeper into the city.
There were more than a few gouges. Whatever attacked had done it in random directions while killing everyone besides her. The deaths notwithstanding, how much damage to the city did they accomplish? And how easy would it be to arrive, find the only survivor, and see that the attacks originated near her?
The goodwill the knights had shown me would go up in smoke. I haven't recovered enough yet, I-I…
Calamitas quickly reached under her bed, feeling for the fabric of her cloak and quickly yanking it out. She grimaced as she saw all the ripped seams and torn fabric. Not mentioning the entirely missing left sleeve.
Better than nothing, however. Calamitas quickly slipped on the torn robes over her medical gown, though it required a lot of patience with her still-unusable left arm. The enchantments were likely severely weakened or gone altogether, but simply wearing her robes made her mind more at ease.
Things were looking dire for the witch as she quickly slipped on her boots, stood up, and left the tent with reckless abandon. Lances of pain spiked through her body with each step, but she forced herself on anyway.
Forget interacting; forget explaining anything. There was no way they'd continue their acts of generosity with her after what happened in the tent. She doesn't even know what happened either!
They'd condemn her even when she's this weak. Someone who can use magic had attacked someone they're in league with, and she was highly suspicious to anyone with a brain or a generous amount of faith; she'd be forced to do more than interact with them.
Reinhardt would kill her. She didn't want to die for whatever reason, something she couldn't understand. But she won't let herself die until she discovers that reason even if it meant fleeing the city and the knightdom.
Calamitas wished to the stars that her magic would regenerate. But it was utterly meaningless. The Ashen can gain nothing from trying to understand the stars. Flying among them is all she asked for, but her magic is too unstable and too little to be able to both escape and fight off any attackers.
Which meant no magic for flying. Which meant fleeing on foot.
Her broken arm and prominent appearance would drive her into a corner, should anyone spot her.
She slowed down her running and tucked into an alley. Her heavy breathing reminded her that her magic usually supplemented her physical capabilities. However, the cold stone of the ground underfoot and the unwelcoming atmosphere hardly paints a happy picture for the witch.
"Haaah…. Hahhh…" Calamitas gulped down the air and sat down against the coarse surface of the building. She placed her head into her good hand, "Dammit, Dammit, Dammit…"
There was nothing that she could do without taking risks. Leaving the city through one of the gates was an obvious no. She couldn't hop over one of the walls either. She groaned, who the hell builds a city in the middle of a lake?!
Staying in the city comes with obvious risks as well. If someone finds her, it'd only be a matter of time before her death. Her magic was only at a mere 20%, and her body was still heavily damaged. If Reinhardt were to be her opponent…
She shuddered. It'd be faster to put her into a guillotine and cut the rope.
She was trapped, alone, and injured. Calamitas lost any way out the moment she was caught in the sky. What was she supposed to do? What was she supposed to do…
The sun was rising into the sky, but thankfully no one was walking the streets, or else her bright red robes and strange appearance would be a dead giveaway that maybe she was trouble enough to call guards or knights or…
She was glad that the city was under attack. Chaos was something she was used to. Something she could use to her advantage.
The witch gathered her resolve to begin moving, and a voice spoke out the next moment.
"Ehhhh? Nee-Chan, what are you?"
Calamitas jumped at the sudden outside entrance to her thoughts. Someone had found her while she was off thinking about useless things!
The witch looked towards the entrance to the alleyway and saw no one, just the glinting rays of the sun reflected off the surface of a river. She looked back and forth in confusion. Did she imagine it?
"Awwaaa~ No, No, we're up here!" The voice called down from on high.
Calamitas followed the voice and saw a girl sitting on top of the roof of the building opposite her.
She dressed in dirty brown rags, with blonde hair that dangled almost to the ground from her elevated position. However, the first thing that Calamitas noticed was her eerie presence. Her twisted smile felt unnaturally wrong. Like it was a negative emotion in the guise of a girl.
"Leave. I am in no mood for whatever twisted games you wish to play." Calamitas ordered the girl, who simply laughed and jumped down to be level with her.
"Awa, but Nee-Chan, you don't look so good. Your arm is all splinted and your clothes are all torn! Not to mention the bandages, you look like you need all the help you can get!" The girl giggled and laughed, but her hungry eyes quickly skirted over Calamitas' form and pinpointed the details that mattered.
"Ah, but that doesn't matter. Indeed, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter because it doesn't matter. As we say it doesn't matter as it doesn't matter, you see?"
Calamitas readied her magic, finally stopping her magical regeneration in preparation for battle. The other girl froze and quickly jumped back with her hands up in the air, but her smile was still apparent.
"No need to be hostile, Nee-Chan. We aren't here to fight, we just want to sate our curiosity, that's all! We just wanted to learn what you are! We just wanted to see what you were doing and if you needed any help is all!"
Of course, Calamitas didn't trust that for a second. But at the same time, the girl wasn't holding any hostile intentions from what she could discern. So if she wasted magic killing her, and Calamitas was found, it would be detrimental enough that she was against it.
"I'm not telling you again. Leave." She ordered the girl. There wasn't enough energy in her body to humor such nonsense.
"Ahh… Alright, alright. There's no need to be so hostile, Nee-Chan. But are you sure you don't need help? You clearly don't trust us, but we can go get some knights if you want?"
"You…" The girl smiled wickedly, clearly enjoying Calamitas' anger as she clenched every muscle in her body. Perhaps even relishing the massive amount of pain that came with it. It kept her calmer than she would usually be. "You… Are threatening me, aren't you? You're no normal girl, despite looking in your early teenage years, you've become adept at manipulating people."
The girl shook her head, and the first frown appeared on her face. "Ah, no. That's a no, you know? As that's a no, but that's a no, because that's a no. Always been a no, never not been a no, you know? We haven't manipulated you in the slightest, we cannot, if you think that we have then that's simply how you've seen our actions."
"Then would you not tell the knights where I am?"
"Hmm, well, that's not something a nice person would do when someone clearly needs help, no?"
"Even if asked nicely?"
"We~ll, we asked you nicely what you were earlier, no? If anything we should've had a conversation about that, if you had answered then this conversation would've never happened, therefore the knights wouldn't learn your location."
Calamitas slammed down one of her legs onto the stone path she was standing on, the resulting pain caused her face to scrunch up and her body to stiffen. She couldn't allow her anger to take over. She'd kill the child, and while she wouldn't care for her death, the waste of magic would be the more significant loss.
"If I were to tell you what I am. Then, would you leave and not tell anyone anything?" Calamitas hissed out. The only natural way out of this without anything detrimental is to answer the question and hope the girl is satisfied.
She smiles again and nods, "Ah, We're a Sin Archbishop of the Witch's Cult, representing Gluttony, Louis Arneb. We're sorry we didn't introduce ourselves earlier, we were too caught up in the moment, you see~"
"I am Cal." The witch said angrily, but still refraining from allowing too much rage to leak into her voice. "I am a half-elf, half-oni hybrid. I assume that that's enough for you to leave?"
"Awaa~, You truly were a half of both! We had heard that the Oni went extinct, but here is further proof that they still exist. We had thought that perhaps it was a fluke that Nii-Sama had found one of your kind earlier! Now we see that it wasn't, how interesting!" The girl bounced around, trying to get a look from different angles at Calamitas, but pouted when the witch continued to face her. "Awa, how mean!"
"I told you what you wanted to know, leave. I'm done dealing with you."
"Ah, then it is a shame. A shame, you see–" The girl stepped away.
"What is?" A dark tone entered Calamitas' voice; if this girl dared to go back on her word, she would kill her. She would light her on fire and enjoy turning her into ash.
"–That Nee-Chan lied to us." The girl said simply, with no hint of a smile or the fake show of happiness that she had been putting on.
Calamitas narrowed her eyes on the girl, who simply stared back. Then, after a moment, the girl shrugged, and her fake persona appeared again.
"You are interesting, 'Cal'." Louis changed the pitch of her voice on the witch's fake name. "You're something we've never seen before. That's why it's interesting. You're interesting, as you're interesting, because you're interesting, always been interesting because we're interested you know~?"
"You talk too much. A sign of being too sure of yourself, that everything is within your control and nothing could possibly go wrong. Are you sure you aren't Pride? I'm sure that would fit your 'character' better. Leave."
But she didn't heed, "We are not sure what you're trying to insinuate, bu–"
"–Brimstone Flames."
A blast of red flames shot towards the girl who quickly shouted out 'Lunar Eclipse!' in a panic before being subsumed by them. Calamitas watched as her flames latched onto the building walls and began turning it all to ash. She snapped her fingers to cut the mana that was allowing the flames to exist, causing them to dwindle and vanish. The ash quickly started to permeate through the air.
"Awa~, how amazing. We've never seen magic like that before~"
Calamitas lifted her hand toward the roof where the voice was coming from, only catching a glimpse of the girl before she quite literally vanished before her eyes. The witch quickly scanned the area where the girl teleported to.
"We'll see each other again, of that, have no doubt. You're fa~r too interesting to let my brothers eat you." Louis' voice came from behind the witch, who, in an instant, swung her arm around laced with brimstone flames.
The flames flew out everywhere in the general direction of the voice, which promptly gasped and screamed out in harsh agony. Finally, all that was in front of Calamitas was her accursed flames consuming everything in sight. The wall she was initially leaning against turned to ash in a mere instant. The person inside the flame quickly lost her shape as she turned to ash.
Louis' echoing voice came out in a shriek. "S-solar Eclipse!!" The figure in flames changed harshly into something larger before vanishing again. Calamitas did another quick scan behind her and on the rooftops. Nothing but the glinting of the sun and the ash from her flames.
She snapped her fingers once more, and her flames which had turned an entire building to ash in mere moments, quickly dissipated.
The ash permeated through the air like a disease, a smell that could only be described as brimstone entered Calamitas' nostrils. Though it was a pleasant smell that she enjoyed, the danger that using her magic put her in turned it into something rotten.
The Brimstone Witch didn't like the idea of running out in the streets in broad daylight, but she couldn't stay where she'd used the giant beacon of fire.
She reached behind her head, grabbed the hood of her robe, and slipped it over. The first thing she enchanted her robes with was to shroud her face in darkness. However, because she was inexperienced then, it still showed her horns through the enchantment. She never got around to fixing it; it eventually just became her appearance when conquering other worlds.
Luckily, her enchantment seemed to still be in effect. Not that it'd have much use with the rest of her appearance being so incredibly off-putting. Unlucky for her, the other enchantments had all disappeared, she'd hoped that some of the combat-oriented ones were still placed and in effect.
She sighed and slowly ventured out into the city once more.
