Chapter Text

After returning to the castle, they headed straight to their rooms.

There was no need to attend dinner tonight, since the party was tomorrow and the dining room was in the middle of being staged, Philip had called it off.

After storing his suit away, he jumped into bed.

Closing his eyes, he tried to tune out the sound of Sylphy humming as she got ready to sleep.

So the big day came, and it was just as bad as he imagined.

Guests poured in from all over—mostly nobles and representatives looking to network, but a handful of actual family too.

Toji hid himself in a corner, trying and failing to escape the crowd.

People he'd never seen before greeted him like old friends, his suit was way too tight around the waist, and Sylphy still hadn't shown up.

'Why are they even talking to me?' He grumbled internally. 'I'm only seven! What, do they think I'm gonna put in a good word with Philip?'

He sighed, head drooping as he silently begged for them to start already.

That was when something completely unexpected happened.

"What are you doing over here?"

Looking up, the first thing he saw was an elaborate headdress. Then below that—Eris's familiar scowl.

'Did they make that just to cover up how short her hair is?' he wondered, amused.

He glanced around, then pointed to himself.

"You talking to me?"

She scoffed.

"Duh. Who else would I bother talking to at this boring party?"

Toji chuckled.

"I thought you'd love it here. Not enough attention for you?"

She bristled instantly.

"You think you get to make fun of me just because you're older? I'll teach you what happens when you mess with me!"

As she raised her fist, he held up his hand.

"Wait, wait!"

She paused.

"What? Are you gonna apologize?"

He shook his head.

"No, never. I was just wondering how old you think I am."

She tilted her head, eyeing his tall, well-built frame.

"You're like fifteen or something, right? And don't try to make me forget what you said!"

He blinked, then let out a genuine laugh.

Sometimes he really did forget how unnaturally big he was for his age.

"What's so funny?! Are you laughing at me?!"

He wiped a tear.

"So that's why…"

Eris grew more irritated.

"What?!"

He waved it off.

"No, no. It's not you. You just helped me realize something, and it made me laugh."

The reason all these nobles kept approaching him… they thought he was an heir.

In hindsight, it was obvious.

Why didn't he realize sooner? Was this Philip's plan all along? Now he just felt stupid.

"Well? Are you gonna tell me what it is?" she asked, finally calming down.

He shook his head.

"Nah, you wouldn't care. Anyway, what are you doing over here? Did your dad send you?"

She shook her head.

"No, I just don't want to talk to any more adults. They keep talking about marriage and stuff. It's so boring."

He nodded.

"Yeah, some guy tried to introduce his daughter to me. It was so awkward I just lied and said I was already engaged."

Eris's eyes widened.

"That's genius! I'm doing that too!"

A cold shiver ran up his spine. He felt like he'd just done something he'd regret for years to come.

"Um—I don't think it makes sense in your case."

Too late.

"Nope! I'm using it now!" She grabbed his arm, giggling. "You're a lot smarter than you look!"

Toji sighed, dread settling in his stomach.

"Hey, what's your name anyway?"

He did a double take.

"Wait, you don't remember my name?"

She stared like he was the stupid one.

"Well duh, no one ever told me."

He blinked in disbelief.

"Not even your dad? Or Ghislaine?"

She made a thoughtful face.

"Maybe, but I don't remember."

"So you just didn't bother!" he exclaimed.

"I didn't have a reason to!" she shot back, nose up. "I thought you were just some stupid commoner, but you're actually useful."

He shook his head.

"You really are a piece of work, aren't you?"

"What was that?" she hissed, leaning closer.

"Nothing! My name's Rudy. Rudius Greyrat."

She blinked.

"We're related?"

Right then, a certain half-elf arrived.

"Rudy! There you are! Miss Edna-"

Sylphy burst out of the crowd with a bright smile—until she saw who he was with.

"What are you doing with her?"

He felt the temperature drop.

Before he could say anything, Eris cut in, still clinging to him.

"Who invited you?"

The two girls locked eyes while Toji sweat bullets between them.

'Shit, I need to break them up before they cause a scene.'

"Um, she was just asking a few questions. That's all." He gently pulled free from Eris and moved to Sylphy's side.

"Well, see ya. Me and Sylph are gonna go get something to eat."

Immediately, Sylphy wrapped herself around his arm and tugged him away.

"Yeah, you stay here," she added. Then under her breath: "Baldy."

"Huh?"

Before it escalated, Toji sped off with Sylphy.

As they left, she stuck her tongue out triumphantly.

But what bothered him more was the wide grin that spread across Eris's face as she watched them go.

Shaking the thought away, he pushed deeper into the crowd.

Finding a food table didn't take long—the entire hall was ringed with them.

Trying to stay out of sight, they settled near a corner and lingered there. Sylphy was still clinging to his arm, as if afraid Eris would suddenly reappear and drag him away.

"You can let go now," he said quietly, glancing at the curious eyes drifting their way.

Sylphy pouted.

"I don't want to."

Toji sighed.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

All heads turned toward Sauros, who stood atop a small podium.

"May I have your attention!" he boomed. "It is time for the main event! Those who wish for the favor of House Borias—step forward and take my granddaughter's hand!"

The room fell silent as everyone waited.

At his father's urging, a young noble boy stepped forward and approached Eris. After a stiff introduction, he took her hand, and the music began.

Toji and Sylphy watched from the sidelines, curiosity piqued. This was the moment all that training was supposed to lead to.

The opening steps went smoothly—both clearly knew the routine—but it didn't take long for their timing to slip.

"My lady, slow down!" the boy whispered, panic creeping into his voice as he struggled to keep pace.

That only made things worse.

Eris stiffened, her steps growing faster and more erratic.

"Waaah—!"

"Ah!"

Their attempted spin collapsed into chaos, and both went tumbling to the floor.

A ripple of murmurs spread through the crowd as attention snapped to Sauros.

"What's wrong, Eris?" he barked. "On your feet! Don't tell me you can't dance!"

The boy clutched his knee.

"That hurts!"

The whispers grew louder.

"So she's still as oafish as ever."

"I heard she was improving, but clearly not."

"Unrefined. As expected of the Greyrats."

Meanwhile—

"He—mmph…"

Toji barely managed to choke back his laughter as he watched Eris's face crumble.

She was frozen, crushed beneath the weight of expectation and ridicule.

'If I ripped off that headdress right now…'

A cruel thought surfaced—how easily he could make this worse.

"Ow!"

But a sharp pinch snapped him out of it.

He looked down. "What was that for?"

Sylphy shook her head.

"Don't laugh," she said firmly. "That's mean."

He blinked. "Don't you hate her?"

"No," she shot back. "Just because we don't get along doesn't mean I hate her."

She turned her gaze back toward the floor.

"I've been watching her dance lessons these past few weeks," she continued softly. "She's been trying really hard. You should've seen her."

She sighed.

"If I could help her… I would."

Toji stared at her, caught off guard.

He'd assumed Sylphy felt the same resentment he did. It had never occurred to him that she might feel sympathy instead.

Here he was, waiting for Eris to fail—anticipating it.

'Damn it… I almost made the same mistake again.'

Last time he'd followed that selfish impulse, it had driven a wedge between him and Sylphy.

He wouldn't let that happen twice.

Resolve settling in, he scanned the room.

"Ah…" he murmured. "I've got it."

Leaning down, he whispered into Sylphy's ear.

Picking herself up from the hard stone floor, Eris kept her gaze lowered as the endless stream of voices washed over her.

"They're all making fun of me…" she muttered, biting her lip.

This wasn't how it was supposed to go.

She'd practiced for months.

She really had tried.

"And you still couldn't," she choked, squeezing her eyes shut as tears threatened to spill.

"Eris, why do you refuse to dance?" her grandfather had asked months ago.

"Because it's boring, obviously," she'd replied. "Sword training is way more fun."

He'd stroked his chin.

"Well then, if you wish to continue using that sword, you must dance at your birthday party! Otherwise, you are forbidden from ever touching one again!"

"Huh?!"

At the time, she hadn't believed him.

But the next time she went to Ghislaine for training, she'd refused, saying she was forbidden from teaching her.

That was when Eris realized he'd meant it.

So she started trying. Really trying.

The problem was… she was terrible.

She had no sense of rhythm, no timing. She tripped. She stumbled. She fell—over and over again.

And now, here she was.

Slipping and Failing all over again.

Just as despair began to close in, a firm hand grasped her shoulder.

"Lady Eris, may I have this dance?"

She looked up.

Standing before her was Rudius—the boy she'd seen in class for over half a year and only just learned the name of today.

"Huh?"

He gave a flawless noble bow, extending his hand.

Their eyes met.

"This is your last chance," he said quietly—just loud enough for her to hear.

She realized the room had gone silent again.

All eyes were on them.

"Whose boy is that?" someone whispered.

"Is he the heir?" another asked.

"What are you thinking…" Philip muttered, burying his face in his palm.

Heart pounding, Eris hesitated—then reached out and took his hand.

"Alright," she said. "I accept."

As music filled the hall once more, their dance began.

Toji had already seen the opening sequence when she danced with the other boy, so he mirrored the footwork perfectly.

The problem was the next section.

He'd never seen it performed.

No reference. No visual.

That's where Sylphy came in.

Over the past few months of studying combat manuals, he'd grown adept at visualizing movements.

As he danced, Sylphy explained the steps to him in whispers—slow spin, twirl, side to side—just enough for him to anticipate what came next.

As they danced, Toji felt Eris start to speed up again.

But unlike the previous partner, he matched her pace.

Two dancers falling out of sync was disastrous—unless one of them wasn't limited by normal human constraints.

Toji could think faster. Move faster. Adapt where others couldn't.

More importantly, he understood control.

Dance and combat weren't so different.

So he applied the same principles.

He matched her rhythm, then—through subtle cues and controlled pressure—guided her back down to a steady pace.

When she sped up again, he corrected her.

Again and again.

Somewhere along the way Sylphy stopped giving him commands, but he'd already found the rhythm.

When they reached the spin, he held firm.

When he twirled her, he maintained absolute control over her movement.

A feat only possible for someone who knew exactly how strong they were—and exactly how fragile their partner was.

The dance ended with a final twirl apart, their hands still linked.

Eris stared at him, face flushed, breathing hard—but her eyes shone with triumph.

The room was silent.

Then—

Clap. Clap. Clap.

The hall erupted into applause.

Cheers followed.

Suddenly, Sauros barreled forward.

"That's Greyrat blood for you!" he roared, hoisting Eris onto his shoulder and dragging Toji into a crushing headlock. "Well done! Both of you! Hahahaha!"

Toji coughed as he was dragged around in a headlock by the overjoyed brute.

"Let me go, you maniac…" he wheezed—his plea completely drowned out by the thunderous applause.

By the time the excitement finally died down, Toji found himself standing near a food table beside Edna, Eris's dance instructor.

He glanced around, searching for Sylphy, but she was nowhere to be found.

"How did you do it?" Edna asked, still wide-eyed. "I've been teaching her for months, and she's never performed that well."

Toji let out a tired sigh.

"I just controlled her speed," he said simply. "Dance isn't all that different from a fight. The one who comes out on top is the one who understands the other person well enough to take control of it."

Edna lifted a hand to her mouth.

"Amazing… To think dance and combat could be so closely intertwined."

"Rudius did it!" Eris declared proudly, folding her arms in a pose that was unmistakably Sauros-esque. "And he was amazing!"

'She really does imitate him,' Toji noted internally.

"Lord Rudius!"

"Lord Rudius!"

He turned—and immediately regretted it.

A small crowd of noble girls had gathered around him, eyes sparkling with interest.

"Will you dance with me?"

"How old are you?"

Toji froze.

"…Huh?"

"Rudius."

Philip's voice cut through the noise. Turning, Toji saw him watching from a short distance away, an amused smile tugging at his lips.

"I'd prefer you not draw too much attention," Philip said mildly. "But it is a special occasion, so I suppose I'll allow it."

He shrugged and turned away.

"Just don't get anyone pregnant."

Toji raised an eyebrow.

'Coming from you, that sounds less like advice and more like encouragement,' he thought dryly. 'Scheming bastard… probably trying to use me to make connections.'

Unfortunately, that didn't solve the immediate problem.

He turned back to the eager girls and put on his most apologetic smile.

"Sorry, ladies, I—"

Smack.

Someone hit the back of his head.

"Agh!"

He spun around to see Eris standing there, scowling.

Before he could say a word, she grabbed his arm and yanked him away, dragging him through the crowd without ceremony.

Toji didn't even bother resisting.

'…At least I don't have to deal with that situation anymore.'

Eris tried to drag him back toward Sauros and the rest of the Greyrats, but he pulled his arm free.

She frowned at him. "Where do you think you're going? You're not trying to sneak off and get in bed with those girls, are you?"

Toji visibly cringed.

"Can we not?" he said. "I'm not some horny teenager who can't control himself."

He shook his head.

"I'm going to find Sylphy. I don't know where she went."

Eris clicked her tongue, clearly annoyed.

"Forget her. Come with me—we should ask Grandfather for a reward."

Toji sighed.

"Look, I don't want a reward. I didn't do that for you, or for the Borias family. Got it?"

He turned away, slipping his hands into his pockets.

"See ya."

And with that, he left the ballroom.

Wandering the halls, Toji struggled with his suit jacket, tugging at the collar.

"Damn, this thing's tight."

He'd been searching for over ten minutes and still hadn't found Sylphy.

Worry began to creep in.

'Where could she be?' he wondered, stopping at a four-way intersection.

He glanced left and right, debating whether to shout her name.

That's when he heard it.

A familiar hum—Sylphy's—but something was wrong.

It sounded… sad.

Following the sound, he quickened his pace and found her sitting alone on a balcony.

She was still wearing the dress—the one he'd picked out, adorned with red roses.

The wind rustled the fabric, carrying with it the distant scent of the marketplace below.

"Yo," he called, slinging his jacket over his shoulder. "What're you doing out here?"

She jumped at the sound of his voice.

"R-Rudy! What are you doing here?" she exclaimed, turning toward him.

He moved closer and leaned against the stone railing.

"I was looking for you. You disappeared back there."

She turned away.

"Yeah, well… I didn't want to disturb your big moment."

He quirked a brow.

'Was she feeling left out?'

"What do you mean? There's no big moment without you. That was a team effort."

She shook her head.

"I don't think Eris would agree."

He squinted.

"So what? Who gives a shit what she thinks?"

She turned back, meeting his gaze.

"Then why'd you help her if you didn't care?"

He stared at her, genuinely baffled.

"Because you said you wanted to help her. I was trying to make you feel better."

Her brow furrowed.

"That's a lie. You don't do things like that unless there's something in it for you."

Toji shook his head.

"The—what? I don't know what you're talking about. You're the one who said, 'I wish I could help her.' I don't get why you're being so emotional about it now."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Emotional? I'm not being emotional! I just don't understand why you went out of your way to save her like that—when you only ever do that for me!"

He blinked.

"Wait… are you jealous?"

She turned away.

"No."

Toji watched her for a moment.

At first, he assumed she was upset because he had danced with Eris. But that didn't quite fit. Sylphy had been the one who wanted to help her.

No... this wasn't about the dance.

She was afraid that helping Eris meant he had replaced her somehow.

Toji sighed.

"You're an idiot."

Sylphy spun toward him. "What?!"

"There was no big moment without you. I only knew what to do because you were telling me the steps."

"But you were the one everyone applauded."

"So?"

He stepped away from the railing and held out his hand.

"Half that dance belongs to you. We might as well finish it."

Sylphy stared at his hand.

"There's no music."

"You hum constantly. Figure something out."

Her face reddened. "I do not!"

"You were doing it ten minutes ago."

"That doesn't count!"

Toji grabbed her hand before she could continue arguing.

"Come on. You watched Eris practice for months. Show me what you learned."

Their first step nearly ended with Sylphy standing on his foot.

"Ow."

"Sorry!"

"You're somehow worse than Eris."

"You moved too fast!"

She stepped on him again, and it didn't seem accidental.

Before long, her sulking had disappeared beneath embarrassed laughter.

That was better.

Toji could handle jealousy, anger, and childish tantrums. What he couldn't stand was seeing her sitting alone because she thought someone had taken her place.

No matter how many people entered their lives, Sylphy would still be Sylphy.

He had assumed she already knew that.

Apparently, he would have to remind her occasionally.

With a contented sigh, he finally let her go.

She looked up at him, disappointment clear on her face.

"Sorry," he said, glancing toward the sun. "But I should get back to the party before it ends."

She sighed, then nodded.

"Yeah… I guess I should go back too."

Returning to the ballroom, Toji and Sylphy rejoined Eris and the rest of the family.

Though nothing was said outright, he could feel that something important had changed.

The eyes of the Greyrats were still on him, but the gaze was different now. Where there had once been a mix of intrigue and apprehension, there was only suffocating favor.

If Sylphy hadn't been glued to his side, he was sure Eris would already be there.

Hilda's eyes didn't seem so sharp anymore—if anything, they looked almost approving.

Philip was still Philip, but the real change was Sauros.

"HAHAHA! Look everyone! My nephew can hold his liquor!"

At some point while Toji had been joking around with Sylphy, he'd accidentally demonstrated his ability to drink entire bottles of wine without so much as a hiccup.

Now Sauros was dragging him around the room like a proud child showing off a new toy.

Toji had been forced to drink several bottles of wine and other expensive alcohols, but thanks to his absurdly strong liver, he didn't feel even slightly tipsy.

That didn't stop him from getting sick of it—both literally and figuratively.

When Sauros shoved yet another bottle of expensive whiskey into his hand, Toji was just about ready to vomit.

"Grandfather! You've been hogging him all afternoon!" Eris complained. "I want to play with Rudy!"

DThankfully, she latched onto Sauros's arm and began pestering him.

Unable to resist his granddaughter, Sauros released Toji with a dramatic sigh.

Relieved, Toji barely had time to breathe before he was dragged somewhere else and made to eat an alarming amount of sweets.

By the time the party finally concluded, he seized the first opportunity he could and fled with Sylphy.

Back in their rooms, he collapsed onto the bed, clutching his stomach.

"I think I'm gonna be sick," he groaned.

Thankfully, Sylphy went to fetch him some medicine.

With the eventful day behind them, the castle remained abuzz as servants moved about, cleaning and restoring order.

Toji and Sylphy were granted another day off after Sauros insisted on rewarding him for a job well done.

They tried to drag Toji to a fancy restaurant to celebrate, but he refused with every fiber of his being.

"A day off is more than enough of a reward," he'd said—and he genuinely meant it.

While fine dining was a personal weakness, the thought of spending even more time dealing with his eccentric family was enough to kill his appetite entirely.

With little else to do during the downtime, Toji headed for the training grounds.

After a quick warm-up, he drew his sword.

Today, he planned to experiment with the Water-God style.

It was a purely defensive approach to combat, one that even encouraged provocation to create openings. While he found most of it absurd, he could still appreciate the value of understanding its structure—and, more importantly, its weaknesses.

If he ever faced a practitioner of the style, he wanted to know exactly how to dismantle it.

What he was attempting now was to replicate its most basic technique—flow—using only his bare hands.

Flow was considered a foundational technique of the school, the backbone upon which everything else was built. Because of that, it was essential to understand, regardless of his opinion of the style as a whole.

Like all formal techniques, it required a body capable of circulating mana—and more importantly, a weapon.

What Toji was attempting was the equivalent of trying to replicate cannon fire with nothing but an arm.

Through extensive research and relentless practice, he had managed to create a version of the technique that didn't rely on mana at all.

That alone would have been impossible for a normal human—but Toji had never qualified as one.

After being forced to grab Ghislaine's blade barehanded, he'd decided that learning how to block attacks without any kind of guard was an absolute necessity.

As he repeated the motion, refining his form, a voice suddenly cut through the air.

"Whoa! You use a sword?!"

Hearing the familiar voice, Toji flinched.

'Oh no…'

Turning, he found Eris standing at the entrance to the training grounds, her eyes glittering with excitement.

Unable—or unwilling—to accept this turn of events, Toji froze completely.

"Hey! Did you hear me?!"

Eris ran up to him, bouncing on her heels.

"Can you show me what you're practicing? I wanna train too!"

Toji looked down at her, his posture slowly collapsing until his arms hung limp at his sides.

"Hey," he said tiredly, "can you tell me something?"

"What?"

He took a deep breath.

"Where's Ghislaine?"

Eris tapped her chin.

"Um… I think she's still doing magic lessons with Miss Sylphy."

He'd expected that answer—but it still stung.

Letting out a long sigh, he straightened up again.

'No use crying about it.'

Then an idea struck him.

"Hey, Lady Eris."

She crossed her arms.

"Just call me Eris. I give you permission."

A slow, dangerous grin spread across his face.

"Well then, Eris… would you like to be my sand ba— I mean, sparring partner?"

He'd been considering asking Ghislaine for another duel, but all he really needed was someone willing to swing at him so he could test his technique.

This worked out perfectly.

"Yes! Definitely!" Eris shouted, nodding enthusiastically.

"AHG!"

Rolling backward, Eris's wooden sword flew from her hand.

She slid to a stop and lay there for a moment, chest heaving as she sucked in air.

"H-How… are you… so strong?" she asked between breaths.

Toji rolled his shoulder lazily.

"Just born that way, I guess…"

For the past hour, he'd been fending off Eris with nothing but his bare hand.

They were both holding wooden swords, yet he still hadn't lifted his even once.

He yawned.

"I'm getting kinda bored. You still wanna keep doing this?"

Eris popped back to her feet immediately.

"Yes! This is awesome!"

Over the past hour, she hadn't complained even once—just got back up again and again, only to have her strikes casually parried.

Toji watched her for a moment, confused.

'Why's she so happy?'

"…Fine. A few more won't hurt," he said with a shrug.

Honestly, it was useful. Repeating the same motions for so long helped cement the technique.

Still, it was boring.

He really wanted to test this on Ghislaine.

…but he stayed and sparred with Eris a little while longer anyway.

Soon the season turned, and the cold settled in.

It had been nearly two years since they first arrived in Roa, and so much had changed.

The castle had become a home away from home for the two village bumpkins, and the Greyrats—once distant nobility—were beginning to feel like real family.

Sylphy had grown in both height and experience. She could now speak confidently with nobles and defend herself if the situation demanded it.

Toji hadn't grown much taller—his body was already nearing its limits for his age—but his spirit had expanded far beyond where it once was.

Where his eyes had once been fixed only on the present, the egos and pressures that entered his orbit forced him to look ahead.

He filled his days with training and study, slowly building a deeper understanding of the world he now lived in.

All this to say—he was better.

It was on one particularly cold afternoon that he received a letter from his father.

He'd received several by now, each filled with the expected pleasantries.

But this one was different.

The words themselves were ordinary, yet something about them felt off—hollow, if he had to describe it.

It was nothing concrete. Just a feeling. A quiet voice at the back of his mind.

'Something's wrong.'

He set the letter aside, leaving it on his desk for days, never far from his thoughts.

He even lost sleep over it.

At his wits' end, he brought it to Sylphy.

"What do you think?" he asked after she finished reading.

"I don't know," she said with a shrug.

Folding the letter, she placed it back in his hands.

"But you know your parents better than I do. I think you should follow whatever your gut's telling you."

Taking her advice to heart, he decided to return home—just to check in.

He informed Philip, formally requesting a three-day leave of absence.

Philip accepted without hesitation, even providing a carriage.

Sylphy came along as well, seeing it as a good chance to visit her own family.

After a round of goodbyes—and a firm refusal of Eris's request to come with them—they set off.

Notes:

Hmm… I wonder what the problem could be. Anyway, did you like the dance? I felt a character growth moment was in order, and what better incentive to dance than trying to right a wrong? Sometimes I forget that Toji's still a kid, so it made sense to me that others might forget too. This fic has been genuinely fun to write—much simpler than my main one. Not that I don't enjoy my main fic, just that this has been a much-needed change of pace. Anyway, hope you have a good one :)
