Chapter 5: Night
Chapter Text
The night was quiet.
Alaric lay on his back, staring at the ceiling. The moon cut through the darkness in a bright streak of light.
Next to him, Rudeus slept shamelessly peacefully.
He couldn't.
Their parents already knew he was a magician.
They had seen it.
They had accepted it with enthusiasm, pride, even excitement.
And that was exactly what kept him uneasy.
Because in his previous life, talent was never a reason for pride.
It was a threat.
But that life… it had been different.
The Hive World.
Metal spires reaching the clouds. Crowds. Smog. The smell of oil and rust.
He had parents there.
He remembered it as through a fog.
He didn't remember their names.
He didn't remember their faces.
He remembered only the warmth of hands.
And the scream.
Alarm sirens.
The trembling earth.
And then fire in the sky.
The invasion came quickly.
Too quickly.
They died early. Everyone died early on the Hive World.
It was a world where children stopped being children far too soon.
Here, it was different.
From the neighboring room came laughter.
Then the creak of a bed.
Alaric sighed quietly.
Paul and Zenith.
Young. Strong. Alive.
Alive.
That word carried weight.
They weren't screaming in pain.
They weren't fleeing from alarms.
They were laughing.
The creaking became rhythmic.
He fixed his gaze on the wall.
The corner of his mouth twitched.
Another creak of the bed.
He cleared his throat quietly and pressed his face into the pillow.
It was more embarrassing than any conversation about magic.
But at the same time… normal.
And that normality was something he still hadn't grown accustomed to.
Maybe he would have a younger sister.
He imagined her for a moment — small, with light hair and a determined gaze.
Or maybe a brother.
Another child in this home, where magic was a source of pride, not fear.
Could he be an older brother?
Could he protect someone the way he hadn't protected those others?
He clenched his eyes shut.
I am a psyker.
Here, they call it a magician.
But he could feel the difference.
Mana was orderly. Quiet. Obedient.
What existed within him sometimes pulsed deeper.
Like an echo of something greater.
He didn't know if it was just the trauma of memories.
Or something more.
The bed in the neighboring room creaked one last time.
Silence fell.
Alaric breathed slowly.
On the Hive World, there were no nights like this.
No silence.
No laughter from parents.
No plans for the future.
Here, there were.
And that scared him more than war ever had.
Because if something went wrong…
This time, he would have something to lose.
He turned onto his side.
He didn't remember the names of his first parents.
But he remembered losing them.
He didn't want to relive that a second time.
He closed his eyes.
If a sister appears.
Or a brother.
He will protect them.
Even if he has to become the monster he fears so much.
He lay still.
Silence returned to the house, but his thoughts didn't slow.
Jurgen.
Tall, silent, with an ever-stern expression and a hand near the hilt of his weapon. Loyal to the bone. Literally. A man who stood by him even when reason would have told him to leave.
How would he react to his disappearance?
He would probably first check the scene.
Then interrogate witnesses.
Then start eliminating suspects.
Methodically.
Without emotion.
And when he realized that Cain… had simply vanished?
He wouldn't give up.
Jurgen wasn't the kind of man to accept ignorance.
And Inquisitor Amberley Vail…
Her reaction would be far more complicated.
Amberley didn't believe in coincidences.
If he vanished without a trace, she would consider it the intervention of higher forces.
Or lower.
She would search the archives.
Question the astropaths.
Maybe even resort to forbidden divinatory rituals.
And if she found no answer?
He furrowed his brow.
Would she consider him dead?
A traitor?
A demon's victim?
And what if she thought he was taken by the Immaterium?
Would she try to recover him?
A short, bitter smile passed across his face.
If someone told her he had been reborn as a young boy in a peaceful village… she'd have the informer's brain examined.
Or burned.
He sighed quietly.
For them, maybe a moment had passed.
For him — a whole new life.
He turned his head.
And then he noticed.
Rudeus was no longer breathing rhythmically.
Too evenly.
Too… consciously.
Cain narrowed his eyes.
His brother lay still for a few more seconds.
Then one eye opened slightly.
The gaze shifted toward the door.
Slowly, very slowly, Rudeus lifted himself onto his elbow.
Sat up.
Quietly pushed the covers aside.
Cain watched silently.
Rudeus slid his legs off the bed and tiptoed toward the door.
A clearly lecherous, utterly indecent grin appeared on his face.
Cain closed his eyes for a second.
Of course.
Of course he wasn't asleep.
Of course he was going to eavesdrop.
Or worse.
He sighed internally.
"Did I really get reborn next to a degenerate?"
Rudeus reached for the doorknob, pressing it slowly.
The floorboard creaked softly.
He froze.
Looked over his shoulder.
Their eyes met.
For a moment, they just stared at each other in silence.
Rudeus grinned shamelessly.
Cain raised one eyebrow.
A very disturbing thought entered his mind.
"Is he a follower of Slaanesh?"
Slaanesh would have been proud of such enthusiasm for all… pleasures.
Cain rubbed his face with his hand.
"If you open that door," he said quietly, in an icy tone, "I swear I'll freeze your feet to the floor."
Rudeus snorted under his breath.
"Don't dramatize."
"This isn't dramatics. It's a warning."
Rudeus hesitated for a moment.
Then suddenly his expression changed.
The lecherous smile vanished as if by magic.
His lower lip trembled.
His eyes filled with moisture.
Cain watched the transformation with an utterly blank expression.
"A-Alaric…" whispered Rudeus in a trembling voice. "I… I had a bad dream."
Silence.
From the neighboring room came a muffled sigh. Then a soft laugh.
Rudeus stepped toward the door, hunched, like a genuinely frightened child.
"I wanted… to go to mom…"
Cain frowned.
Slowly.
Very slowly.
"A bad dream," he repeated flatly.
"Yes… it was scary… a monster… so big… and… and I just wanted to check if parents were awake…"
Another creak from the bed on the other side of the wall.
Cain stared at him without blinking.
Rudeus held that gaze maybe three seconds.
Four.
Five.
"What are you up to?" Cain asked quietly.
Rudeus blinked innocently.
"Nothing?"
"You're lying."
"I'm not lying!"
"You're lying badly."
"How badly?!"
"You changed your expression too quickly. Tears appeared without facial muscle tension. Your voice trembles, but your breathing is steady."
Rudeus froze.
Cain tilted his head slightly.
"And besides," he added dryly, "you were smiling."
Rudeus instinctively touched his mouth.
"That was… a nervous tic."
Another muffled sound came from the neighboring room.
Rudeus glanced toward the door.
Cain followed his gaze.
Slowly returned his eyes to his brother.
Really.
He was really starting to suspect that this kid was a degenerate.
"If you go in there now," he said calmly, "you will die."
"You're exaggerating."
"Father will kill you with shame. Mother with embarrassment. Me out of mercy."
Rudeus grimaced.
"You're cruel."
"I'm a realist."
"And if I really had a bad dream?"
"Tell me."
Rudeus opened his mouth.
Closed it.
"It was… a dragon."
"A dragon."
"Yes."
"What did it do?"
"It was… big."
"Dragons are usually big."
Rudeus squinted.
"You're not helpful."
Cain shrugged.
"Go back to bed."
Rudeus lingered at the door for a moment, torn between curiosity and survival instinct.
Finally, he snorted and went back under the covers.
"You're boring," he muttered.
"And you're suspicious."
"What do you mean?"
Cain looked at the ceiling.
In his mind appeared the image of a dark palace, whispers, laughter, promises of pleasure.
"Nothing," he said finally.
Rudeus rolled onto his side.
"You know… normal kids sometimes want to go to their parents at night."
"Normal kids don't sneak around with that kind of grin."
"What grin?!"
Cain remained silent.
Rudeus sighed theatrically.
"You're overreacting."
"And you're too interested in other people's business."
Silence finally fell from the neighboring room.
Rudeus stared at the ceiling for a moment.
"Do you think we'll have siblings?" he asked suddenly.
Cain hesitated.
"Statistically, it's likely."
"That would be nice."
"As long as they don't inherit your tendencies."
"What tendencies?!"
Cain closed his eyes.
"Sleep, Rudy."
Rudeus fidgeted under the covers for a while longer.
Finally, his breathing calmed.
This time naturally.
Cain lay on, staring into the darkness.
Jurgen would probably search half the planet.
Amberley would analyze anomalies in the Immaterium.
And he was making sure his brother wasn't eavesdropping on their parents.
Absurd.
But… maybe that was normal life.
Even if it came at the cost of having a potential little follower of decadence in the next bed.
