Chapter Text

"Alright, let's all calm down and see if we—" I began.

Lung, the dragon rage monster, didn't seem to appreciate my suggestion. He opened his mouth up wide, and a wave of fire burst out at me and the Undersiders. I tried to web his mouth shut, but Lung was fast, and quite literally snaked his head out of the way with a disturbingly long neck.

Still, it did force him to angle his fire blast in a way that would not instantly roast us all to death, so that had to count for something.

"Get to the roof!" I shouted. Thankfully, the Undersiders were all on their super-dogs, so they were able to get up and out of the enclosed space and current death trap quick enough. I followed my gaggle of trusty sidekicks, shooting another glob of webs at Lung to slow him down for a bit. Once we got to the roof, I took stock of the situation, now that we all had room to move…

Just in time to see every nail, rusted slab, and the broken power generator on said roof bend outwards as blades jutted out of them and over us, driving down on our heads like a tsunami.

"Back! Back!" Grue shouted, and the dogs and I frantically followed along. The wave of metal crashed over the building, caving in what remained of the front walls, and we managed to reach the far side of the building, where the ocean met the cold concrete wharf.

"You kids okay?" I called out.

"We're fine!" Taylor shouted back. A swarm of insects was buzzing all around us. Who knew there were so many airborne insects in such a small space?

"Okay. Good. Still good for the team-up?"

"Are you fucking—" Tattletale stammered, eyes wide behind her domino mask. "Lung is fighting Kaiser, and at least two of his lieutenants! They're some of the strongest capes in the state, never mind the city! We should be running!"

"I can't let them tear down half the city. If they're as strong as you say they are, their fight is going to destroy everything in a dozen city blocks." Lung was ripping himself out of Kaiser's makeshift prison, and growing even larger while doing it, even if the two twenty-foot Valkyries were doing a pretty good job of holding him down. "I can take the Nazis alone—" Probably. "—If you kids can keep Lung distracted."

I quickly turned to look at my erstwhile allies. "You kids did say you were going to beat up the dragon-man, so you do have a plan for Lung, right?"

"Yes." Grue was gripping one of the bones on the mutant dogs, and hard. "It was to hit him before he ramped up, but our backup of playing keep-away with him running in circles long enough for him to tire out."

"As good a plan as any…" And from what I read on the files Armsmaster and Dragon sent me, probably one of the better strategies against the giant rage monster. Experience taught me the same thing against Hulks.

Speaking of Armsmaster, I whipped out my phone and shot a few quick texts to his personal line. Lung and Kaiser at David St wrhse. With Undersiders, trying to cont, maybe capt. Kids aiming for L. "Any last-second thoughts? Because if you want to bounce now…"

"I'm not running." Taylor hissed behind her mask. She said it as if Lung wasn't fifteen feet tall and running with a spear in his chest to get at one of the giant twins.

This was going to be a problem, now and in the future, wasn't it?

The rest of the Undersiders were in various states of unease, but none of them were backing down either.

"You aren't going to tell us it's all too dangerous and that we need to run away?" Regent drawled. "Because that's what I figured a responsible adult would say. In fact, I really wouldn't mind you saying just that…"

I already disliked the kid, but he made a good point. Even though he made my Spider-Sense constantly go off whenever I stood close to him. They said his power was to make people trip, and I knew how dangerous that was, especially for people like me who relied on speed and agility to stay alive, but…

Well, it didn't matter right now. "I remember what I was like when I was your age. That just made me want to fight more—"

A gout of flame burst past us all, followed by an explosion of shrapnel. I nearly got a piece of metal the size of a dinner plate lodged into my skull.

"HILL HYOU ALLLL!" Lung roared as he lobbed a fireball at us and Kaiser. We safely dodged again, but 'safely dodged' and 'fireball' were always a bad combination of words.

"And something is telling me that neither of these guys is going to let us stroll past them." I finished. "So, let's get to heroing."

What a stupid kid I had been. Running off to my death because someone else was in danger…still, even if I had taken to trying to save these little idiots from themselves and the world, that didn't mean I could count on their first taste of heroism to be easy, especially with the mess we were in now. "That said, as soon as things get hairy, contact me. I'll get you all to safety, no matter what. Got it?"

"Can that be now?" Tattletale muttered loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Yes." I answered. "Don't let anyone peer-pressure you into this. If you want out, I can distract both gang leaders." An iron maiden was slamming into Lung from all sides, who howled louder. The metal was already snapping under the strain of his flexing, and the blood pouring out of his scales was boiling in the air. "It's going to be a tight window, but I think I can get you out—"

Tattletale's eyes darted around her team. "I—I-i better stay. Gotta make sure we somehow get out of this alive."

"Okay." It still didn't feel right to let these kids run in against villains this strong. But based on their powers, they would be very good at hide and seek even against the rage monster who was towering above most single-story buildings. But I could see the look in their eyes, even behind the masks. They couldn't walk away from this, and I couldn't force them all to run while also dealing with the gang leaders.

My phone pinged. Most of empire and Oni Lee downtown. Inbound approximately 10 minutes.

"Make sure to do what you can to limit his damage. In fact—" I pulled one of my sleeves down, and handed Tattletale one of my Web-Shooters. "Use this. The webbing should be strong enough to pin Lung down for at least a little bit, and it's fireproof. Don't—"

Lung roared and punched down one of the Valkyrie twins, who were suddenly not looking as big as they did compared to the rage dragon a few minutes ago.

"Alright, we're out of time! Just read my thoughts for the instruction manual, psychic girl! I'll think them as loud as I can, so you shouldn't have too much trouble imprinting them onto your psyche. Armsmaster says he'll be here in a few minutes, so look out for him, good luck!"

"What the fuck—" Tattletale started to shout something, but I was already in motion. The girl's psychic powers were odd, as I had never met a telepath who could read thoughts without also being able to speak inside my brain, but she clearly made up for it in other ways given her team's track record.

In any case, I had to focus on the fight, and was going to do it with only one Web-Shooter, which was going to make things difficult. I liked to use my second hand to help stabilize myself mid-swing, especially during complex aerial gymnastics, something I was all but guaranteed to be doing in a fight like this. It might almost be better for me to be completely out of web fluid so I could stop my muscle memory before I'm already halfway to a broken neck.

"—finally, to avenge the good men you killed after your escape!" Kaiser declared, like he was on TV cutting a wrestling promo.

"WHAHT THEH FUKH HARE YOU HLIEHING HABOU—"

Still, it had its uses. I sprayed down one of Lung's giant, clawed feet to the pavement, and as luck would have it, a road full of potholes was still strong enough to keep him pinned for a minute. The Valkyrie twins had backed off for a minute, and paused when I got Lung's other foot stuck and landed near Kaiser. They took a more defensive stance, unsure of what to make of me.

"Hi guys. I figured now would be a good time for a pause between rounds while I dropped in and gave my feeble hero lecture before you both try and flatten me to get to each other!" I tried. Lung didn't instantly try to char and grill me, so I took that as a small measure of success, and Kaiser tilted his head.

"Phenomenal timing." The nazi leader drawled. "Just as I am about to finally rid my city of this vermin, you jump to his aid."

"Really? You think you can outfight a guy whose whole power is that he gets stronger the more he fights?"

"It's a simple problem of holding the brute still, plunging a knife through his brain, and destroying his Corona Pollentia." Kaiser made a show of dismissing me. "You heroic types' ignorance never ceases to entertain."

"Yeah, I'm a bucket of laughs." Here I was, stuck between a guy who got stronger the angrier he got, a duo with size-changing powers, and a pompous jerk who could manipulate metal and had strong opinions about the Holocaust. I actually gave a dark little snort of my own at the sudden realization.

"Did I say something amusing?" Kaiser asked. His voice was distorted by his helmet, but he knew how to project, and that only amplified its sense of self-aggrandizing pompousness.

"Private joke." Still, he was one of the more polite nazis I'd had the displeasure of knowing. "Just admiring my life's vicious sense of irony."

"Oh, I remember now. You're the one Rune told me about. The comedian." Kaiser shrugged. "I'll have you know puns are the lowest form of humor."

"Huh? What pu—"

Suddenly, jagged bars of metal sprouted up and around me, covered in spikes, caging me in, and slowly pushing towards me to add emphasis.

Kaiser took a step forward and rapped a finger against my prison. "Now be a good little pest, and wait your turn. If you insist on forcing me to pick your legs off one by one, I suppose I can—"

I bent one of the bars aside—it was cheap, thin iron, not nearly strong enough to hold up against my grip—and used the opening to punch the jerk in the face.

For some reason, villains always think they can get away with anything once they lock you in a cage. It makes breaking out all the more satisfying. It also helps that I have a Spider-Sense to tell me when I actually need to get out in a hurry.

Kaiser recoiled backwards, barely managing to stay standing—I hadn't put too much force into my punch, as he didn't have any super-strength of his own, but it looked and felt like his armored helmet was thicker than I expected, as Kaiser let out a scream and desperately clutched at his face instead of collapsing unconscious. I took the opportunity to slip out of the cage and went in for the knock-out punch—

Kaiser recovered in time. Jagged spikes suddenly shot out of his helmet, sharp enough to force me to back off. I shot a web at him, but the spikes extended far enough to deflect my attack, and any further pressure I could put on was cut off by the giant hand descending down to protect Kaiser.

"Kill him." Kaiser all but roared as he clutched his mask, even through the spikes. Given his new, more nasally register, I was pretty sure I broke his nose.

"Aw, don't you want to banter—" I was cut off by a giant sword slashing at me, followed by a giant spear. "—more? What's the matter, can't—" the blades sprouted more blades, all pointed at me, but I still had plenty of room to maneuver, making sure to retreat towards concrete. "—take it when someone punches back? I did not see that coming!"

…Oh, damn it, I did it again. Another nazi pun. It totally wasn't intentional.

Still, it pissed Kaiser and the twins off more and kept their attention, which was the plan. Still, sparing a quick glance at Lung, the rage monster had ripped his feet free from the ground, concrete and all. I wasn't sure if that said more about his strength, my webbing, or the local roadwork, but he was free now. Another glob of fire was forming in his mouth, ready to fire at Kaiser—

One of Hellhound's dogs rammed into his knee, knocking the dragon-man off balance. He stumbled, and the flames fired downwards, only burning the already ugly asphalt. Then, a cloud of darkness swept over the man, instantly obscuring all the light from the flames in a chilling effect.

It looked like the Undersiders were going through with the plan. I could only hope they knew what they were doing, and actually could string Lung along. Of course, that only put more pressure on me to take out Kaiser and his goons fast—

Suddenly, my Spider-Sense screamed to life, but in a bizarrely muted way. I did a quick jump back to avoid whatever attack was coming, but when I turned to look, there was nothing.

It was happening again, and at the worst possible time.

Throughout the past week, my Spider-Sense would activate at odd times, in the same loud-yet-quiet way as it just did. It wasn't enough to take me out of a fight, but it could be very distracting, and worst of all, I had no idea what was causing it. The PRT files Armsmaster shared with me didn't know of any psychic members of the Empire Eighty-Eight, and I seriously doubted that Tattletale girl was doing this—

And then my real Spider-Sense kicked in, and I jumped out of the way of a giant sword. Time to get back in the game. I'd just have to deal with this my own way.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a big, black spider sitting on a dandelion growing out of a crack in the road. I reached my hand out to it, and it jumped on without complaint, crawling up my arm towards my back. I'd guessed Taylor had some way of sensing where bugs were with her power, so it was a good way for her to keep track of me. So long as I wasn't afraid of her using the arachnid to crawl under my costume and bite my neck.

Which gave me an idea of my own. Thanks, kid.

No time like the present, then. I ducked under a wall of blades that were jutting out of a street lamp, and rushed towards the Valkyrie with the spear, quickly landing on her boot. She tried to shake me off, but gravity didn't have anything on spider-sticking powers. I raced up her leg, somersaulting over the blades that were growing out of her belt and then ran up her back.

I arrived on her shoulder just in time for her head to turn to face me, right where I wanted it. I aimed at her chin, and put actual force into my punch, enough to send a supervillain flying through a wall. My fist connected, and the Valkyrie's face began to twist, and she began to stumble…

But that was it. She quickly readjusted her feet and refocused. The giant hand and the metal blades forced me to back off.

What had gone wrong? The old-fashioned punching method usually worked fine, even with people souped up on Pym Particles. The lady with a pending likeness lawsuit from Asgard should have taken more damage than that. What was her deal again?

I tried punching her again, from her other shoulder to blows aimed at her arm's joints. She flinched badly and growled in pain, but otherwise didn't react. The other Valkyrie was trying to help her against me, and Kaiser's blades kept popping up all over their armor.

"Seriously, what do nazi giants eat every morning? I gotta get me some of that—" I slipped through the sword Valkyrie's fingers once again and landed a punch on her face, to similar effects. "—unless it's racism. I know it gives you a big head, but the side effects are—"

The spear woman laughed. "Your puny attacks have no effect on us! We are pure and strong—" She kept talking after that, the usual racism claptrap, but the first part of her rant made some gears turn. I remembered now. They didn't just get the standard super-strength and size package when they got big, they had some weird field that shrunk attacks aimed at them in inverse proportionality to the twins' own size.

A quick punch on one of them confirmed this: my hand shrank, and thankfully returned to normal size as soon as I pulled away. It happened remarkably fast, too. Figures. I didn't notice when I was so busy dodging everything they were throwing at me. The effect was something that probably had all sorts of interesting applications to look over, like how it decided what was an attack—

Another blade attack forced me back into reality, and I landed on the ground for a quick breather. After a quick check confirmed that a cloud of darkness was still surrounding Lung with the kids darting in and out, I refocused on the problem at hand. My normal method of attack wasn't working well, so I had to change things up.

I wanted to take the twins out first, as they seemed pretty protective of their boss, and more importantly, could probably do a lot more damage to the surrounding city if I knocked out Kaiser before his getaway giants. Especially with Kaiser's powers only working in line of sight, compared to the twins being able to stomp down anything.

So, onto plan B. I jumped into action, webbing up the sword Valkyrie's foot, circled around both her legs to tie them together, and—

Snap. The Valkyrie struggled for a few seconds, but broke right through my clever trap. "You think you can stop us with something that feeble?!"

—and found that the size-change field worked on my webbing too, turning what should have been a strong line into a barely visible thread. It might have worked if I had both my web shooters, but since I gave one to the Undersiders so they could deal with Lung…

Damn it, I could already hear that Regent brat snickering in the back of my head.

What else could I do, then? Play keep-away with my two giant friends might work, but it wouldn't really help me keep them down. I could keep trying to widdle away at them with haymakers, as it was clear those hurt them, even if not as much as I would like them to, but my own stamina wasn't endless. I was starting to get winded from all the acrobatics I had to do to keep ahead of both the twins and Kaiser.

So that was it then. I had to risk taking out Kaiser? I could try to hold him hostage, and then turn him over to the twins when they agreed to run away, but that was risky, and…

Oh, Armsmaster was coming by in a few minutes. Maybe he'd have a gizmo up his sleeve to deal with them. In any case, Kaiser was the easiest target right now. All I had to do was get through two giants, their swords, and every stray bit of metal he could use to skewer me alive, and then figure out my next move.

Another false buzz hit my Spider-Sense. When I looked, it was again nothing. But it almost tricked me into looking the other way when the giant spear tried to skewer me.

I spotted the nazi leader in the distance, screaming something into a phone before turning his full attention back to me. I could see the cloud of darkness spitting out globs of fire every now and then at the destroyed warehouse, but hadn't felt the spider bite me yet, so I still had some time to make it all work.

The sword Valkyrie's blade tried to come down on me again, and I dodged out of the way as usual, but this time I made sure to kick up some dust and rubble to hide my approach. It seemed to work, as Kaiser momentarily froze when he saw me charging at him. More importantly, the twins had been chasing me down, and while they would be able to close the gap, it was clear they wouldn't be able to do it quickly enough to save their boss.

I darted between broken pieces of rubble as fast as I could. Kaiser reacted pretty well after the initial shock and started creating a wall of blades around him from the scraps of metal surrounding him.

"Aw, come on, special K. I just wanna get up close and personal with you!" I'd have to workshop his nickname. Maybe when I punched his mask off. Willie always got mad when I used his real, legal name.

"Die, insect!" Kaiser spat.

"Come on, you had such witty retorts back when I was in your reich!"…Okay, I'll admit, that one was intentional. "What do you say, let's see if my fist can put the charming wit back in your goosestep!"

Kaiser just growled and sharpened his wall of blades. Another stop-start flash of Spider-Sense went off, and I ignored it the best I could. I could tell Kaiser had learned his lesson, and these swords were a lot thicker and tougher than my first cage. I wasn't going to be able to pry his tin can open, especially with him watching my every move. Still, I had a few more tricks up my sleeve.

I danced around Kaiser's cocoon, doing what I could to web up his viewports. It was annoying to do with only one Web-Shooter, but I managed like always.

"Do you really think this is going to save you?!" Kaiser's laugh echoed through his wall of swords. "You've signed your own death warrant, you upstart fool! Do you honestly think I need to see you to kill you?!"

"Don't worry, buddy. This is just the krieg before I blitz you."

"What are you babbling about now, you insipid—"

And then I landed on the ground and threw the front of his sword-wall into the air.

Funny thing about my sticking powers. They don't just help me grab on to things, but they also make me really good at picking things up. I just have to stick to a surface, and then because mean old Kaiser hadn't bothered to ground his creation, just giving it a few sharp spikes to keep me from lifting it up by its base, picking the whole thing straight up off the ground was a cinch!

…Though it was really heavy. It had to be a ton or two of solid steel. My back was going to kill me tomorrow.

Still, the look on Kaiser's face was totally worth it. He was still wearing his metal mask, but after more than a decade of punching bad guys in the face, I could tell when they finally realised the jig was up, and even picture their expressions.

Kaiser's was a nice blend of Willie's and any given Hydra agent. A mix of unrighteous indignation and the sudden realization that all the money in the world wasn't going to save him from the oncoming fist.

I picked up a rock and threw it at Kaiser's face, and he had to react fast to deflect it, because I had a mean curveball. I could also tell he was struggling, because the rest of his wall hadn't collapsed in on me from all sides yet. And besides, this was all distracting from my real goal, and something Kaiser didn't see coming: webbing up his feet.

Really, it was a bit of a repeat of my performance with the Valkyries, but sometimes you've got to play the hits.

Speaking of…"I'm aiming to punch you into the bay. That way you'll be in pain, wet, and hysterical!" I tugged on my web and Kaiser shrieked as I pulled him through the air to me. My Spider-Sense warned me of the Valkyries hot on my heels, but even with the false positive starting up again, I knew my powers well enough to say I still had plenty of time…

Except there was another tingle that was starting to scratch my brain, pushing past the weird flares of yes-no and coming from a direction opposite the twins—peripheral vision said it wasn't Lung, so what could it be? I dared to look for half a second—

And immediately jumped into the air to get away. Much slower than physics said I should have.

Not a second after I cleared the area, a brand new Nazi slammed into the ground where I had been standing and plucked Kaiser out of the air. It was difficult to tell given how ugly most of their costumes were, but I had made a point to memorize this creep's bad SS cosplay after my research: Krieg.

Out of all the members of the Empire Eighty-Eight, this guy was the only one I had immediately flagged as a straight-up problem. Aside from what amounted to a standard super-strength package, Krieg could make a field where kinetic energy slowed down the closer it got to him. Given how reliant I was on my speed, getting up close and personal with this guy was simply not an option.

Adding Kaiser's metal manipulation into the mix, plus support from the twins, and I was in a bad spot. I needed to take someone out, fast. The twins I could whittle down, but it would take time I didn't have, and Krieg was going to defend Kaiser, seeing as he already moved between us.

Plus, there was that ghost in my Spider-Sense. It flickered out for a second, before starting back up yet again. Just to rub more salt into the wound.

Sword Valkyrie's foot came crashing down from above, reminding me I still didn't have much room to work with, and had to make a decision fast. I experimentally shot a glob of webbing at Krieg's face, only to watch it slow to nothing and him easily sidestep it.

"Stand still! How can I shoot you if you keep moving?" I tried again, to similar results. The twins attacked from behind, but they were moving more intelligently now, trying to poke me into Krieg's field while Kaiser's power was stretching over their armor—slipping through them wasn't going to be easy, but I could probably manage—

And then through all the warnings and false positives pinging me, I felt a subtle warning, and then a sharp pain in the back of my neck.

Taylor's spider. Damn it.

I couldn't make out much in the haze of darkness. But fire and smoke was billowing out from under it. I had to get there, now.

And suddenly, I realized that there was only a narrow strip of dockway leading to the kids. And Krieg was standing right in front of it.

The spider's palps were digging into my skin tightly. Taylor was still in control of it, but she might not be for long.

I did a reverse backflip and landed on one of the twins' faces, catching her and Kaiser by surprise—I could feel some of his spikes digging into my feet when I landed near her helmet, but it was clear he hadn't been expecting that—and did my best to kick myself through the air towards Lung, up and over Krieg's field. It wasn't fancy or clever, and Krieg could see it coming a mile away, but I had to bet on the surprise factor. If I didn't get there soon—

And then Krieg jumped up into the air. I tried to web him, but a piece of metal in his hand expanded to deflect it. Then he slowed down my momentum, and grabbed me by my ankle.

This was going to hurt.

When I struggled back into consciousness a few seconds later, I could confirm: it did. A lot.

Krieg walked into my (quite blurry) vision. My Spider-Sense was screaming at me to get out of the way, but given how sluggishly I was moving in his field, I wondered if I could escape him even if I wasn't pounded into a crater. He slammed his foot down on my chest, and then reached down to punch me into the ground. I'd been thrown through walls with the force he was pumping out, but for some reason this was the stretch of road city services decided to make nigh-indestructible.

"You should have done what you were told." He growled in a cartoonishly evil German accent and hit me again. "Du stück scheisse."

I was in a bad spot. Really bad. Every time I tried to punch back, it was like trying to move through molasses. Krieg would step out of the way, and punch me again. My Spider-Sense was going crazy, but that was only distracting me further, and I was pretty sure I was going to get knocked unconscious soon, if not outright killed.

And worst of all, I was running out of lines from The Producers.

The only saving grace was that Kaiser was the kind of human garbage that enjoyed watching his minions tenderize the beef, so I wasn't impaled yet. If I could just land a hit, I could send Krieg flying.

But the darkness was closing in. Looks like this was going to be how I died. Biting off more than I could chew in an alternate reality, failing to save a bunch of dumb kids that I swore I would protect. Almost storybook, really…

Then Krieg started twitching. He was still hitting me, but he was getting sloppy, and his knees were starting to buckle, or something. It was like he had ants in his…

Oh. Oooohhh.

Thanks again, kid.

Krieg was furiously scratching his legs as streams of insects were dropping on the nazi from above—it looked like flies were carrying them, and Krieg's own power guaranteed a soft landing for the already tough bugs. They moved slowly, but they were finding their way under Krieg's costume and wreaking havoc. Kaiser and the twins didn't seem to know what was going on, but he would figure it out fast. With the last of my strength, I kicked Krieg into the cloud of darkness covering Lung.

"Look out, here comes the master race!" It looked like a clean shot too, and the darkness in the air seemed to slow down. I did what I could to right myself and charge ahead, doing what I could to ignore the sudden stinging pain next to my Web-Shooter—

Wait, why was that hurting? I looked down for half a second, and saw the problem. My sleeve had been ripped in the fight, which exposed my Web-Shooter. Which meant it was in Kaiser's line of sight, which meant he could manipulate it. And given how little he cared for my health, and how much web fluid was leaking, practically bubbling up, looking ready to explode…

There was only one option left. Even if I was never going to hear the end of it from that little hellspawn Regent.

I tore my Web-Shooter off my arm, and threw it after Krieg. Sure enough, it exploded midair, covering whatever was on the other side of Grue's darkness. I hope it was Lung, because I didn't have enough feeling in my everything to recognize another one of Taylor's spider bites. Still, I got ready to charge ahead—

Only for my Spider-Sense to scream at me loudly enough over all the other feedback it was giving me to get me to jump back and away form the giant spear.

I turned to face the three remaining members of the Fourth Reich. The Valkyries were still standing in relatively good shape, and Kaiser was doing his best to hide a limp.

"Congratulations on surviving Krieg, insect." Kaiser called out, his nasally voice starting to scratch the back of his throat. "But if you had half a brain, you would have known better than to strike me!"

"Yeah." I did my best not to wobble. "I never was a smarty."

The twins charged ahead, looking to finish me off. I couldn't blame them for trying. Every single part of me felt like it was broken. More than a few bones probably were. I could only hope that Panacea girl really was a miracle-worker like everyone said…

If I was lucky enough to get to her alive.

Still, even with my Spider-Sense still chasing shadows, I managed to dodge all of their attacks for what felt like a minute. A quick glance said Grue's darkness was still going, and I think Tattletale was standing outside of it, holding a phone for some reason. I took it as a good sign, even if I nearly did get cut in half while looking.

The long and short of it was that I was running on empty, and had been for too long now. I needed Armsmaster to come in and save the day, because I was about to collapse—

But not before my Spider-Sense flared in too many directions at once, again. Just as the sword was coming down. I tried to stretch myself in ways my body just wasn't meant to, and lost all my balance in the process. I collapsed in a heap, and couldn't move no matter how hard I tried.

Metal blades were starting to close in on me. "Goodbye, insect!"

"At least I won't die sounding like…" I coughed. "...a bad Wallace Shawn impression."

I could hear Kaiser's teeth grinding. So I had that going for me, at least.

Distantly, I could hear a motorcycle engine getting louder. That was good. Armsmaster would be able to get the kids out at least. That was…good…

"It's been a while since I enjoyed killing someone as much as you." Kaiser spat. "Your life ends now, hero—"

"NO." A voice roared around us. Wings buzzed, and darkness consumed me.

Notes:

I hope you all aren't bored of the "Peter takes Lisa at her word and really thinks she is a psychic" joke yet. Because it isn't stopping anytime soon.

As for powerlevels, which seems to be a popular topic around here, I will say that Fenja and Menja don't get much details, but based on their ability to survive (for a time) against Leviathan, who I have a sneaking suspicion punches harder than Spider-Man, and the weird way their powers are described, I feel confident in letting them do more then job to Peter.
