Chapter 2: World 1: Earth Bet, Arrival and Explosions

Chapter Text

The gate doesn't really match the rest of the decor. It's housed in a large room in the basement, reminiscent of the gate room from SG1, but without the shaft up to the top of the mountain. The portal itself wavers in the air in the middle of a ring that looks like the VFX team from Tron decided to make their own stargate, but got in an argument with the aesir halfway through.

"Here goes." Shifting up into a dragon form barely small enough to fit through the gate, I bend my neck down so Pyrrha can hop on. She looks a bit odd with white hair and blue eyes, like she could be Weiss's cousin or something.

The portal flares to life, leaving spots in my eyes for a moment what with opening into noontime sun from the relatively dim underground room. I know it's not supposed to close on me at random, but it's still uncomfortable to think about being in the middle of a dimensional guillotine for long. So I race through, emerging out into the air over a city I know by reputation, but not remotely by sight.

"Dimensional fracture events taking place all over. Dense radio chatter, cracking encryption… Oh hell, we're waaay off the normal entry point. I think they got impatient with you cutting the timing that close.

"How bad?"

"Bakuda's spree. I think."

"Well fuck." That throws a wrench into several things I was planning, but at least the big one, unchaining PTV, is still in play. I hope.

"Ok, let's think. We can still short-circuit most of canon. Sorry Pyrrha, but it looks like our little briefing is pretty much useless. Everything we warned you about already happened. Getting to Fortuna is still the goal, but most of the major players are already on their way. Rein, can you track the deadman's switches?"

"I'm trying, but I think she might be using her shard as the transmission media." It's weird hearing Rein's voice from Pyrrha's lips.

"Wait-" I backwing into a hover. "-what?"

"There are a few bombs in people below us, but when I try to track the signal it shunts outside this dimension before going… somewhere else. I can try to just crack the encryption and trace the route that way, it would work but she might catch me. She can't touch me herself obviously, but that's not how she works."

"Right, hostages. Think you can seal the bombs and boot them out of Earth Bet?"

"Sure! I'll need your reserves instead of Pyrrha, sorry Pyrrha." "No need to apologize. I am familiar with first response situations."

"Sounds like we're headed to the hospital then. I'm sure we could make a difference in the actual fight, but we're unknowns. The fog of war is a bad place to make introductions. Rein, map?" She doesn't bother with a verbal response. Instead I get a shroud overlay of the city below with a giant red cross over the hospital. "Hang on." I call out unnecessarily and nose down into a dive. Picking up speed, I pull out just over rooftop level and glide, the dive got me to a higher speed than I can reach in level flight anway, so flapping would actually slow me down.

I can hear screams from below us, and I suppose I can't blame them for being frightened of the two hundred meter dragon buzzing their houses. Well, if you include my tail anyway. Lacking much else to do on the way, I pull on the shroud to form illuminated panels on the undersides of my wings. Stark white over most of the ventral surfaces, but with the internationally recognized red cross emblazoned as forty meter sigils against the white background. It sort of works, there's still screaming as I pass over, but it fades more quickly behind me once people have a chance to process the signage.

Approaching the hospital I notice that the parking lot has been summarily emptied of cars. Presumably it was quick work for some super to arrange them all bumper-to-bumper and door-to-door at the end farthest from the building itself. But that doesn't actually leave anywhere to land with the entire parking lot turned into a triage area. I backwing hard on approach, managing to pull into a hover far enough away to avoid jostling any patients as far as I can see.

As I'm surveying the scene, a teenage girl, all in white and gold, flying in a miniskirt even, rockets up to me. "Hey! Who the hell are you?" Oh, great. Our first contact is Glory Girl. While the version of Rein created by fanon Hayate is amazing, I really hope this isn't fanon 'collateral damage barbie'.

"Are you… Glory Girl?" I ask, as though I'm uncertain. "We're new, but we're here to help."

She seems rather startled to be addressed by the dragon after having challenged the rider, but recovers quickly. "Woah, I thought you were a master projection or something. Or are you?"

"I don't think so." I pull my head back and swing it to the side a bit, giving her a tilted look. "How do I check? Err, not important. I have a shaker power that can make temporary medical equipment. I can also breathe fire, but this place seems to have too much of that already. One of my companions thinks she can teleport the bombs off of earth Bet, right out of people's heads too, but we haven't tried."

Victoria just stares for a few seconds, her gaze judging. Ultimately she gives us the benefit of the doubt and pulls her cellphone out. "Hey Ames? The dragon claims he's friendly and wants to help, says he can make medical equipment with a shaker power… Well obviously, but where do I put him!? No, I don't think the roof can take it, he's bigger up close… No I- Ames!- Oh, Hi Doc, where do you want the giant helpful dragon? He says he can shaker up some equipment for you." you know, I probably should point out that I can get smaller. People's lives are at stake, but they haven't even asked how much room I need.

"Uh oh." Rein doesn't seem very concerned over whatever new development prompted that. "The FAA is asking about the superheavy that showed up on radar for a few minutes."

"Oops? Do capes need pilots licenses in this version?"

"I don't think so, except tinkers."

"Then we're fine."

"Ok, follow me!" Glory Girl finally puts away her phone and zips off. Following her I discover that the locals decided to just have me set up in a supermarket parking lot down the road. Settling down I start with just a basic cleanroom, though very large in scale. "Rein, Pyrrha, see if you can get scans of their equipment. I'd prefer to go with what they know."

"Sure, if they let us." "Just let me do the talking." "Very well."

Raising a paw dramatically, I slam it down on the ground. Panels of asphalt flip over to reveal polished ceramic, a wave propagating out from me to cover half the lot. The few spaces that still have cars in them simply slide away to deposit them closer to the supermarket and out of the way. Our guide's eyebrows rise at the sight, and she pulls her phone out again, floating farther away until she's out of human earshot. I just keep working.

"Hi Mom!... No, nothing's wrong… I don't think so… she's still at the hospital… What!? No! I'm just down the street! That's why I called you. A new cape showed up asking to help, not sure if he's a changer or a monster cape- Sorryyy, but that's not the important part. He's a shaker, like, really strong. It's like watching Labyrinth except sane. No! I'm not exaggerating. There's a two-story building covering half the parking lot that wasn't there when you picked up!"

"Welp, I'm guessing Brandish is inbound. What a perfect order to meet people in."

"It could be worse!" Rein sends back optimistically.

"Don't tempt Murphy!"

"Seriously though, new capes show up and the first thing we do is build them an overflow hospital. It's really hard to spin that as villainous."

"Fair."

It only takes a few minutes to get the skeleton of the building up, along with the simpler rooms that don't need any special equipment. A breakroom just needs squashy couches and good soundproofing, so overworked staff can catch a quick nap. Bathrooms are similarly ultra-standardized, in this case the effluvient just gets dumped into a matter disintegration spell. Medical waste disposal gets the same treatment, even prions can't survive being reduced to component atoms.

With the skeleton of the building in place, I'm still waiting for scans of the various equipment before adding the rest. While I wait, I look around a bit, then flick a screen into the air with my shroud and tap it into the wifi of a nearby coffee shop. From there it's easy to find a local news site covering the situation. Victoria flies up next to my head to watch too, though not silently. "So… you going to finish that?"

"I'm waiting for Reinforce to get scans of the equipment. No point giving the docs brand new stuff they don't know how to use. No time for training right now, you know?"

"I guess?" Looking around she asks quietly "Hey, can you bring up the idiot duo's stream? Mom will yell at me if I use my phone, but they usually have the best footage."

I already know exactly who she's talking about, but have to ask for the sake of appearance. "Idiot duo?"

"Uber and Leet. They turn all their crimes into games, and their tech always explodes or something. Except their stupid invincible camera drone."

"Which is why they have the best footage." I nod, and bring up a quick 'zoogle' search with a thought. Their live stream goes on a second screen hanging in the air, and on impulse I put up another half-dozen to get as many versions as possible.

It takes Rein long enough to talk her way through the hospital's bureaucracy that Brandish shows up shortly after the first scans. I'm forming a set of X-Ray cameras when she walks up.

"Did you get a permit for that construction? You can skip most of the approvals in an emergency, but City Hall still needs to be informed."

"No." I don't bother to look up, though I do set the shroud to start recording. She's probably used to dealing with tinkers, might as well play to stereotype, even if I'm using a shaker power. "Do I need one for a temporary structure?"

Brandish 'hmmm's "how temporary?"

"Depends how long they need it? I don't think I can keep it up forever, but I can probably manage a week. Um, parawiki says you're a lawyer. Can you… I don't know, just make all the paperwork go away so I can get to work?"

"Not personally, I'm needed against the ABB, but I can send a junior partner. I'm surprised you didn't follow the explosions like every other parahuman in the city." Glancing over, I find her with arms crossed and foot tapping. Even if she doesn't have the haircut, she does look like a Karen, so hopefully I can keep her off my case, or on my side, long enough.

"It's tempting, but we're unknowns. Trying to join the fight is just begging for blue-on-blue, and we'd rather not be labeled villains on our first outing on Earth Bet." That makes her stiffen, though I can't tell if her eyes widen behind her goggles.

"You're from another Earth?"

"We all are. Last place didn't seem to have anyone else around. Well, not anymore, but we found some tinker-tech that let us get out of there, so someone had to build it. It only came here though, so I'm hoping it's a step up." All technically true, but very misleading. The portal machine really would qualify as tinker tech according to their ratings. Not that they'll ever get to inspect it.

"You will need new identities. As long as you stay on the right side of the law it shouldn't be difficult, merely time consuming. I need to go, and Victoria needs to return to guarding Amy."

"Oh, yeah." Watching GG's disappointment is kind of amusing. She's not strong enough to get hit by dragon musk, but just being a dragon is cool enough that the teenager wants to stick around.

"The PRT will also want a word with you. If you want me to take you as a client, don't make my job any harder by talking to them without me present. Good luck."

As she turns to head back to a rather beat-up car, I message Pyrrha and Rein.

"So, apparently we have a lawyer, at least for now. We'll probably have to discuss the matter again once the immediate emergency is over."

"Yay, just in time for Leviathan." Is Rein's somewhat sarcastic reply.

"Yeah… We might have to make a couple more purchases before we get Fortuna…" I let out a deep sigh, continuing to work on my construction while I think. The shroud is user-friendly enough to be able to just copy-paste devices. "If we got here when we expected to we'd be able to get the credits for a Bakuda capture. Too bad making an attempt would cause so many other problems now."

"So who are you buying?"

"I don't remember if Flechette shows up for Leviathan, but even if she does, she's 'one basket' so to speak." I let the smug humor at keeping them in the dark for now seep through the shroud. Not that I could stop it if I wanted to. It's kind of strange how the shroud actually leaves me a little more exposed than it does them.

"HEY! YOU UP THERE!" The unnecessary yell from ground level draws my attention from the MRI I'm currently checking over. Pulling my head out of the second floor, I bend my neck to look at the small crew who have shown up. It's kind of an eclectic mix, but presumably it's just who was nearest in each case. The woman in the labcoat is partway through a sandwich, so I'm guessing she's here on her meal break. There's also a couple uniforms, a guy with a clipboard and hardhat, and a lady in a suit.

"Officers, err… innnspectorr? I take a guess. Doctor, other lady. How are you?"

The young woman in the suit is the first to step forward. "Samantha Shillings, esquire. Mrs. Dallon sent me." She points at the PRT officers. "Wait for her before talking to them, but I can help with the permits and waivers you need for all this." She then tilts her head to the man with the hardhat. "He's the one we need to deal with."

"Huh… Where I'm from bureaucracy is never this fast, even in an emergency."

The inspector shrugs. "I don't know about the rest, but I'm here as a favor to Panacea. She put my cousin back together last year after a gang shooting."

"Huh… I've never met her, but I didn't think she was the type to track favors."

"She's not." The doctor answers, mouth still partially full. "But her name has more weight than mine, and she let me use it for this." Glancing over at my currently car-sized paw she adds "Dr. Cornwall MD. I'd shake your hand but-" Shrugging, she takes another bite.

"Yeah, being this big can be awkward, just ask my girlfriend." Every single one of them glances toward my hindquarters, and the women clamp their legs together. I just laugh, the sound booming off the nearby buildings. "I can get smaller, I'm a changer, but the area of my shaker power scales with me."

"Hey, if you haven't already told anyone I can turn human, please don't. It's funnier that way. They know I can get smaller though. Also, I referred to Pyrrha as my girlfriend, so don't be surprised if anyone asks." Pyrrha's embarrassment seeps through the shroud, followed by slight irritation at my amusement. "Hey, it means we can get away with public affection."

"You should have asked."

"Ah, yeah. Sorry."

The conversation with my girls is short enough my guests are still awkwardly looking anywhere except me, except one of the officers who's giving me a thumbs up. "The girl you had on your back when you showed up right? Nice catch!"

"Thanks. Now, can we start the inspections so we can start helping people? Doc, I'm copying equipment you already have, so everything should work the same way you're already used to. I figured you don't have time for training on new equipment right now."

"Good." she answers in between bites, clearly still very hungry.

"Can we go gang hunting if we're with the PRT?" Rein asks a few minutes after they're done scanning.

"Hmm, that would solve the blue-on-blue problem. Go ahead, but if you make a warranty claim you're getting a spanking."

"Excuse me?" Pyrrha asks. "I thought the warranty was so you didn't have to worry."

"It is, but we don't need everyone taking the gloves off when fighting us just because we resurrect. Particularly since I don't. "

"Oh."

"Other than that, have fun. I'd bet Rein can probably play Weiss's part for some iceflower sniping."

The inspector is initially wary of the thickness of the building's support pillars, but hopping up to sit on top of it without so much as making them tremble satisfies him pretty much immediately. "What the hell are they made of?"

"My power." My shrug rustles trees across the parking lot. "When I need exact properties, like for the electronics I'm copying, I can get something exactly like steel, or copper, or silicon. But a building just needs to be strong, so that's what I focus on. Seems to work ok."

"I'll say." He notes something down on his clipboard. I can see the words, but I don't know the terminology so the string of nothing but abbreviations is meaningless to me. "And exactly how long is this structure intended to last?"

"As long as it's needed. I'll get pretty grumpy if that's more than a week, but if it's absolutely necessary I can keep going longer."

"So it's not going to go away when you fall asleep or something?"

"It shouldn't. I've maintained constructs while sleeping before." Which is true, even if I've only done it once. "But it has a range limit, so I'm kind of stuck here."

"Ah. Well, I can't find anything wrong with it as a temporary structure. If it were longer term you'd need to file evacuation plans and get something more standardized for waste disposal, but as long as it's gone within a month I think you're good to go. The PRT is going to want to go over it again before anyone stays overnight, not that you've included recovery rooms, but the hospital can start using it for overflow treatment." Signing at the bottom of yet another form, he hands it over to Samantha and tips his hat. "And now I'm going to go thattaway." pointing away from the gunfire and explosions still intermittently lighting up the night in the distance.

As we watch him drive off I look down at my new lawyer. "Don't worry, if anyone attacks here I'll make sure they regret it… Say…" I consider bugging Rein for it, but I can probably find it myself. "I don't know how it's worded here, but in some worlds the treaty ending world war two declared peace with Germany not The Nazi Party."

"I don't know what you're planning, but please don't make my job harder."

"Well, if the nazi's never actually signed a peace treaty, then technically they're still war combatants. This is a hospital." Pulling up the local version of wikipedia, I track down the documents in question and start searching for any loopholes I might be able to exploit in case of E88 attack. She might not know about the impending disaster Coil's planning for them, but I do.

He didn't know what the hell was wrong. Some rapidly spreading effect, unknown to him.

"Mayers, go get medical attention. Break silence if you must, you're no good to me dead."

"Aye sir, pulling back"

"Mayers, press forward. You're getting close and if you pull back now she'll get away." Besides, his team of scouts was safe and sound in the other-

D̴̹̙̈́͋̍͋̈́̏̕̕ȉ̶̢́ş̵̭̰̪̙̖̞͈̻͇͕̌͒̋̃͛̓͌̚͠j̶̧̫̫̺̭̪͖̠͇̜̐̉͌ͅu̷̦̘̤͓̰̱̟̪̭̞̮͊̒̒͆̈́̂͐͘͝n̸̛̯̜̊̓̾͊̾̃̅̿̈́͗͂͐͠c̸̡̺͕̠͙̫̼̞̙͂́̃͆̓̊̋̉͗̉͋̕̕̚͜͜ţ̴̢̛͉͓͔̟̘̦͗̏̊͋̓͊̔̆͘͠ḯ̵͔̘͙̗̱͉̦̫̯̟̎̅̓̐̔̔̉̀ö̶̦͓̐͂́͝͝n̶̨͈̞͉̤͈͗̈́̈́̅̾͆͘͜͝͝

"Aye sir. The bitch needs to die."

What the hell?

"Anderson, cover Mayers team. Pull back if you-"

"Anderson, keep them busy away from Mayers team. I don't care if-"

D̴̹̙̈́͋̍͋̈́̏̕̕ȉ̶̢́ş̵̭̰̪̙̖̞͈̻͇͕̌͒̋̃͛̓͌̚͠j̶̧̫̫̺̭̪͖̠͇̜̐̉͌ͅu̷̦̘̤͓̰̱̟̪̭̞̮͊̒̒͆̈́̂͐͘͝n̸̛̯̜̊̓̾͊̾̃̅̿̈́͗͂͐͠c̸̡̺͕̠͙̫̼̞̙͂́̃͆̓̊̋̉͗̉͋̕̕̚͜͜ţ̴̢̛͉͓͔̟̘̦͗̏̊͋̓͊̔̆͘͠ḯ̵͔̘͙̗̱͉̦̫̯̟̎̅̓̐̔̔̉̀ö̶̦͓̐͂́͝͝n̶̨͈̞͉̤͈͗̈́̈́̅̾͆͘͜͝͝

"Gah!" Spikes of pain lance through his temples as his world collapses again. Clearly Bakuda has figured out something to interfere with finding her. She's going to die slooooowly. Possibly several times before he's satisfied. But he needs this alliance to catch her first.

"Technically I think you're correct, but there's no way the courts will agree."

"Even if they attack a hospital?"

She shakes her head. "The hospital sure, but you're across the street."

"Well that sucks… Hopefully I can armor up a good enough bed." With a heavy sigh I gesture off toward the parking lot. "Well, hopefully it won't happen tonight. You've stayed long enough, just give me a- Hmm, actually you can't call me tomorrow. Im, you can show up in person if you really need to, but I guess I need a phone for this world. Anyway, get out of here, go get some sleep."

As she walks away, I check for any bystanders before shrouding up a dome to cover my resting place.

The path is chained by three

The thinker, the warrior, the interloper they be

The agent bound can be undone

By travelers arrived from another sun

Three chains undone replaced by one

The path unchained, the warrior slain

The long struggle is ended, the deed is done

The lonely oracle may find rest once again

Smirking, I read over the post one last time before planting it on the general section of PHO. Figuring out who sent it will be trivial for Cauldron, even with a giant blind spot covering me, but it's vague enough to seem like nonsense to anyone else. It's also going to offend a lot of people on the forums just on general principles, but that's just a bonus.

With the hook baited and cast into the sea, I settle down for the night, letting my eyes shut as the faint sounds of the city at war are held at bay by half a meter of indeterminate super-alloy.

It feels like I only just got to sleep when one of my girls wakes me up again by poking my brain."She followed us home Master, can we keep her?" Rein sends again at my bleary inquiry.

"Huh?" That's not exactly what I expected when I told them to go have fun. Creating an overly fancy iris door in the side of my 'little' bunker, I look out into the fading evening light with one eye. "Welp, at least it's not like we were planning on letting canon happen anyway. But I have to say your choice in strays appears to be made of snark." Admittedly the blond hasn't actually said anything yet. From what I understand that's way out of character for her, but maybe 'surprise dragon!' has her off balance. Before she has a chance to recover, I call on the shroud to infiltrate my hide, locking down any and all microexpressions she might otherwise be able to pick up on. Sure, it won't help with macro-expressions, or with small variances in the movements I intend to make, but every little bit helps when dealing with a Thinker 7.

"Greetings… Tattletale right? Parahumans Wiki only lists one blond with your color scheme in the Bay. Come on in." The metal plates of the iris slide against each other, widening the opening.

She gulps heavily, eyes searching what little she can see of me through the door, before finally stepping through. I can smell the fear and hope rolling off her in her sweat, and she jumps with a squawk when the door snaps shut behind her, cutting off what little light was entering from outside. Good evidence that Inference Engine isn't helping much at the moment. "Your teammates said you're the source of the stranger effect that messes with Coil." Her voice echoes in the dark, before I bring up the lights slowly for extra drama.

Her reason for being here is about what I expected when I recognized who followed my girls home. I hope Trace Immunity is slowing Inference Engine down enough, or this could get awkward. It should be limited to extrapolating just from the things she's actually capable of perceiving with her own senses. "Your backer right? I'm hoping it protects me from the Simurgh, so he'll have to offer something amazing to get me to stop." Yeah, I know it's not remotely what she's here for, but hopefully she doesn't know that yet.

I'm honestly not that interested in her as a waifu. Her snark is fun, but her impulsive need to pick at everything is going to need correcting. If she's going to offer herself on a damn silver platter though…

"What!? NO! I want you to extend it to me!"

"Well, fair warning, and I'll point out Pyrrha and Rein did know about it ahead of time, but there's a minor master effect baked in. I can't get rid of it, but it's only about as strong as Glory Girl's aura as far as I can tell. Well, her aura when she's not angry anyway. I haven't actually seen her angry at close range." Entirely true, but misleading to anyone who doesn't already know what happened to Amy.

"I know." Oh really? I let my eye-ridge raise a little. "Pyrrha's not a zoophile, but she wants you anyway. Your confusion when you opened the door also affected her."

"Your reputation fails to precede you. I didn't expect you to be able to see that much through my anti-thinker effect. Regardless, you still want this, despite knowing of the sexual consequences? Your Parahuman Wiki page claims you're asexual."

"It also claims I'm a villain by choice." She answers dryly. "Most of that page is things I wasn't given a choice about. Do you have any idea how many germs are in someone's mouth? I can count them when you open your mouth." She pauses, then corrects. "Not yours, other people. I'm not a germaphobe, but having a petri dish shoved in my face is still gross."

"Hmm…" I just stare at her for a while, waiting for her to shift uncomfortably before continuing. Standing there without talking seems to do a number on her psyche, and she starts fidgeting pretty quickly. "I may be new here, but I wasn't born yesterday. Everything about your reputation says there's no way you're this open with someone you just met. Why would you choose me over Coil?"

"Because you don't have a gun to my head." Having something to work with again calms her down instantly. Interesting effect. "You could have dozens of slaves with a power like that. Hundreds. Instead you have two. One who loved you before you used it, and the other agreed after you saved her life."

"Do you think I intend to stop at three?"

"Hell no! I'm counting on you having more. The more you get, the more freedom I'll have." She grins smugly. "I'm not thrilled your power is so sexual, but it's several hundred steps up from Coil." The smile disappears and she shudders. "He gets off on the idea of torturing me to death. That's what waits for me if I'm ever captured by the PRT."

...Should I? Well, no. But it's amusing and won't really change anything. As far as I'm concerned I already have her consent. "He splits timelines. Perfect precog limited to yes/no decisions, then he goes with the one he wants."

Tattletale's eyes go wide and her hands start shaking. "T-th-that's why- He doesn't just have an active imagination! He really has tortured me to death before! That's how he does the coin trick. He never loses because he just doesn't bet if he would!" Her words come out in a rushed jumble, speeding up and becoming less coherent as her power races ahead now that it finally has the last detail to answer soooo many questions she's asked it before without result. Her face screws up and she curls over, pressing her hands to her temples. "AAgh!"

Dimming the lights to make her migraine a bit less terrible, I wait for her to gain a little coherency.

"Why? Why tell me that? I could escape on my own now." She whimpers out the question, still folded up on the ground with her fists pressed against her temples and eyes squeezed shut.

"You could, but you'd still get thinker headaches." She opens one eye just enough to barely see my head, flinching when even the lowered lights stab into her brain like a dagger. I let her see an enormous toothy smirk. "That's one more thing my power does. How would you like unlimited use of your power without the headaches?"

She closes the eye again. "Oh fuck yes."

"That is part of the process, yes. Oh, don't worry, my shroud is capable of chip fabrication room levels of cleanliness. There's not a single germ on these tentacles to offend your sensibilities." With her in such pain right now, I reverse the order of things I took with Rein and Pyrrha, binding first before the sex. Her brains are already melting out of her ears, just not with pleasure, and that needs to be fixed. She startles and cries out when the tendrils flow over her, an entire forest of them grown in the span of a breath to envelop her curled up form. There's nothing special about her costume for the shroud to absorb, so it just disintegrates as the metallic tentacles slither around her.

She's dry as a bone on her own, but that's no obstacle, and the tentacles headed for her pussy and ass drip with lubricant. I'm trying for something like sliquid, and she certainly doesn't show any more pain reactions when they slip inside, but with the migraine already digging into her brain that doesn't mean much. Her gritted teeth are actually the hardest obstacle. I could go up her nose, but it's easier on her if I just press one against her lips until she manages to process the intrusion. With a gulp and a whimper she opens her mouth, and that orifice too is invaded all the way down to her stomach. She'd probably start gagging, if she had time, but cocooned and invaded as she is, her new shroud takes root before she can. Her cocoon snapping tight against her skin and slithering around until it suddenly just lies flat, thinning out into something that looks like someone added neon purple trim to the edges of her old costume.

"Ohhhhhhhhhh." It's easy to tell when the headache stops. Her whole body relaxes with a heartfelt groan, and she rolls over onto her back. "Ok, that? That was worth it, all by itself." Pushing herself up on her elbows, she looks over at me and in the low light of my temporary bunker I can make out her shroud forming some sort of low-profile goggles over her eyes. Thermographic optics apparently.

"That was quick." Rein sends, along with something that's probably humor seeping across the shroud. "The system assigned her Tier 4, so you have 48 points now."

From Pyrrha I'm just receiving humor and arousal. "Don't worry, you can get some more later. I didn't invite Rein to your first time either." Slight embarrassment is added to the mix, along with a hint of indignation.

Grinning back at her, I let the new and improved Inference Engine see behind the curtain just a little. Specifically some of the effects, though not the source, of the Dragon Musk and Blood perks. Watching Tats reaction when her now much more symbiotic power eagerly feeds her the information is hilarious. Her eyes immediately snap to my hips, where my tip is only just starting to show in preparation, and she unconsciously licks her lips. Then she realizes what just happened, and turns her head to look back at my face, one eyebrow raised sarcastically. "Really Mr Dragon?"

"Yes, really. Also I've been using the name 'James'. Can't go having my team call me 'Mr Dragon." She starts to smirk, so I add "At least not because they don't have anything better. Doing it sarcastically is fine."

The smirk turns into a glare and a pout. "Well that takes all the fun out of it." Glancing at my hindquarters again, she changes tack. "You better make that smaller before bringing it anywhere near me."

"That's your only concern? No squick?" Her eyes widen, then she grins, snorts, and starts laughing.

"No, nothing! It sounds… fun!" The laughter gets louder. "Do you have any idea how long it's been?" Flipping to her feet, she runs up to me and wraps her arms around my muzzle. "I tried autoclaving a dildo, but my hands were still too dirty. I wore gloves, and got a rundown on how many germs had landed on them since I put them on. I haven't gotten to jill off in over a year because I can't find a room clean enough!"

"You know, I expected more snark, and less touchy-feely-giggling. Where's the snarky bitch who slays people with just a few words?" The humor in my voice takes the sting from the words.

"She's about to get laid by the guy who cured her daily cluster headaches and made her immortal. So shrink down and give it to me!" There's a moment of silence, then "Wait, immortal? You left some things out mister."

"I left a lot of things out. Telling you about more of the signing bonuses wouldn't make your answer more yes would it? Now, for more immediate matters, I actually can't shrink while keeping that overflow hospital going."

"Oh." Her lips twist in frustration.

"On the other hand, Rein and Pyrrha can hold it in place for a few minutes without me. You'll owe them a favor in return, but it'll probably be something similar. 'Cover for me so I can get laid'. You know, simple things."

Tattletale gives me a flat look, but a moment later the feelings Rein and Pyrrha are leaking into the shroud change to amusement, and Tattletale blushes.

"Yes, we can hold it for you."

"Great!"

"I have awesome teammates don't I?" I tease, shrinking down to the two-meter form that can fit through normal doors. That still leaves me the size of a horse, but it's a vast improvement over a dick that would send the Simurgh screaming in fright. Well, if there was any chance that I could rape her as I am anyway.

"That's still too big. How did Pyrrha- she didn't, you're messing with me."

"Haha, yes." Caught, I shift down to the form Pyrrha termed 'dragon faunus'. "As far as Earth Bet is concerned, this is as human as I can go."

"That's… better." The smirk at being in on a trick played on the whole world fights with the intimidation still on her face at even the reduced size I have in this shape. "You still won't fit. You don't expect to fit. Pyrrha didn't take it all. You know how to be careful. Being careful with us turns you on? Because we have to trust you to go for it. Trust is a turn-on for you? Really?"

"When you're done analyzing my kinks, you're still due for your first orgasm in years." I remind her wryly.

"Good point." Stepping forward, she grabs my cock with one hand and strokes it a few times, watching my face as she does. Apparently she likes what she finds, because her shroud sprouts a few tentacles out the back, and she picks herself up Doc Ock style to reach the right height. Chuckling at the solution, I wrap my hands around her trim waist and get lined up.

Pyrrha may have gotten a hand wrapped around my base to keep her from sliding too far down, but in hindsight that was silly. Instead I use the shroud to scan Lisa's body, and then create a comfortable padded seat at the right height to stop her as deep as she can actually take. She notices immediately of course, and grins with anticipation in her eyes. "Come on big boy, show me what the fuss is all about."

Returning her grin, I start sliding her down, garnering an extended "Ohhhh..." from both of us. Her mouth hangs open a little, eyes closed while she processes the new sensations. All the tiny muscles in her face keep twitching as the sensations progress, my scaly texture both slick and bumpy in ways that apparently do wonderful things for her.

On the way down she's experimenting with her internal muscles, playing with her sensations and mine. Her pussy might not have any real experience, but damn if she's not learning quickly. The velvet heat quivering chaotically around me quickly settles into a lovely rippling pulse, her walls greedily sucking me in while her hips rock eagerly. All that and I'm not even halfway to bottoming out inside her. Lisa's breathing deepens as she continues sinking, the stretching really starting to get intense as she takes more of my tapered member, swollen lips thinning with the tension and gripping tighter, the friction increasing for both of us.

"Wow, you learn fast." Reversing directions, I pull back until just the tip is left inside, her greedy walls dragging at me the whole way. Then I start sinking back in, letting her slick velvet walls suck me in, eager to welcome me even though they're stretched near the limit. With each drop she sinks a little farther, stretching wider, shivering harder. Her expression is mostly slack at this point, even the little twitches fading as her focus tightens in on her tight little pussy.

"Uahgggg…" She cries out incoherently, body shuddering through her first orgasm, losing the coordination she managed so quickly. I just let her ride it out before I resume moving, enjoying the way her roiling depths massage the two thirds or so of my length buried inside her. When her climax shudders to a panting conclusion, I grab her hair and lightly tug, pulling her head back to look up at me.

"So, was it everything you expected?"

"More… Everything and more."

"Good. Now let's really blow your mind." I curl my neck down to kiss her, such as I can with a dragon-esque head, our tongues playing between us for a few long seconds, her soft pink muscle much gentler doing this than what she normally uses it for. Chuckling, I point it out to her. "Not quite as practiced at this kind of tongue-lashing." She groans obligingly at the pun, but is apparently too blissed out at the moment to snark back.

Getting a grip around her waist, at my current size my thumbs and fingers can overlap, I start pumping her up and down. It's nothing complicated, but apparently that's what she needs right now according to sticky fingers. Just a nice simple fuck, driving deep every few heartbeats while her velvet walls gradually recover their recently learned skill. Prodding the perk a little more, trying for more detail, I find something I guess I should have expected. Even with her power improved by the shroud, the girl is still quite vulnerable to overstimulation. Not too much pleasure, but too much distraction. The bunker like this? Perfect location, the outside world is locked away so she can hear nothing but the wet squelching of our bodies meeting. Maybe she'll become more adventurous later, but for now this is what she needs.

And I cut off the flow of information there so that my distraction doesn't distract her, hot as it is to have such insight into her newfound sexuality. Instead I focus my eyes on her trim form, watching the bounce of her breasts with every stroke, the way her lips stretch wide around me closer to the base, but cling to my shaft on the way up as though reluctant to part. She's new at this, but her rapid gain in skill has me climbing that peak myself rather quickly, the rippling finally settling into a counterpoint to my thrusts, trying to pull me in as I withdraw, clamping down just to be forced open as I force her down on my shaft.

Her skin glistens in the faint light, sweat forming and highlighting goosebumps. Letting Sticky Fingers guide the pace ever so slightly, I adjust until we reach the peak at the same moment. Her unpracticed rhythm breaking down at the same time I stop thrusting, instead just holding her all the way down while I flood her depths. Tingling pleasure races over both our bodies, and I get a pleasant surprise when Inference Engine figures out how to shove that across the shroud on the emotional connection. Pleasure shared echoes between us and I can't contain a roar, throwing back my head and letting it echo through the bunker.

Pulling her off of me proves to be a bit of an experience after that, both of us a little hypersensitive and twitching with every bit of friction. "Wow."

"Yeah." She pants, trying to stand and nearly falling over, catching herself with the shroud. "Eep!" Stabilized, she starts giggling with the endorphins flooding her system. "I needed that. I needed that sooo much."

"You're welcome. Now, I should probably take over the overflow hospital again, so if you don't mind…" My form flows and shifts, returning to a six-limbed form that fills most of the enclosed space. Tattletale is left 'standing' by my right paw, with my head curved around on my neck to rest next to her. "It should be safe to sleep here if you'd like."

"Yeah." Wobbling over to one of the walls, she reaches up and grabs a handle that wasn't there before, and pulls it to reveal a murphy bed. Flopping down on it, she calls out something like "Night night", though it's hard to tell with her face in the blanket.

"Just add things to my constructs without asking why don't you."

"You left the permissions open."

"That's fair." Reaching out, I grab the connections to the emergency hospital back from Rein and Pyrrha. "Thank you ladies. Tats had a great idea if you want to sleep in here with me." I attach an image of the bed and send it. Moments later the two appear next to her and pull their own beds out of the wall.

Well, Rein's is more of a little shelf.

If my dragon form needs sleep, it doesn't seem to need much of it, or maybe just rarely. I wake up after only a couple hours and end up whiling away the night monitoring the situation in the city. With my team out of the way, Coil's mercs seem to be doing much better against Bakuda. Funny that. He's in for a real shock once she's gone and Tattles can feed him his own colon without violating the bakuda truce.

"We got a hit on the crawlers. What do you make of it?" Accepting the sheet of paper from Doctor Mother, she glances down briefly, then stops and stares, brow furrowed.

"Whoever wrote this is a blind spot."

"And yet they clearly know about the entities, and you specifically. I don't like it, the situation in Brockton Bay is already delicate."

"The experiment?" A thought, a question, a series of steps that lead nowhere. "The spread is significant. Most of the city is affected. I need information to build a model."

Ever willing to see the best in people, Keith is the one to ask the next question. "What if it's on the level? How many people could possibly know about the path? Can we really afford to turn down the chance?"

"Three chains replaced by one. That seems to imply a master power, I don't like it."

"Neither do I, but I don't think we can afford to stay away, even if just to pick their brains. What if they remember their trigger and saw a different angle?"

"What if there are four entities?" Rebecca's question silences the room.

"We can have Dragon backtrack the post."

*Clang! Clang! Clang!* As heavy and durable as the shroud construct is, something still manages to ring it like a bell in the early hours of morning.

"Hmm…" I'm still in the process of forming some cameras on the outside to take a look when Lisa obliges.

"Brute, tall or flying, cadence matches recordings of Alexandria knocking on a door, location lines up with where you created a door last night."

"So she's knocking on the front door, but hard enough to knock a house down?" I ask incredulously. When I get the cameras working though, sure enough she's right.

Forming a speaker to go with the cameras, I call out "It's six AM. What do you want? I don't think I have any overdue books." The query seems to have her nonplussed for the moment. I set a microphone to record and turn my attention to my girls. Tattletale seems mildly disgusted at the moment, while Pyrrha and Rein don't have the context for the pun.

"Ugh, James, that was terrible." Rolling out of bed, Lisa wobbles a bit on her feet, wincing at the motion as she brings her legs together. "Also, you need a cape name. Even if you're pretending to be a monster cape, it's there for the rules."

"Any suggestions?... Snarky suggestions will be met with more puns."

"Glaurung." She smirks up at my face. "Since you apparently breed true, even if we aren't compatible yet. He was Tolkien's father of dragons."

I shrug, whipping the air around inside the shelter and mussing all the girls hair. Not that it matters with all three still having bed-head. "Good enough." Checking on the recording from the door, I find about what I expected. She ignored my name-pun and simply asked how I got my information. "Should we let her in? Or does she need to huff and puff some more?"

"She's who you're- She's not who you're here for, but she knows her. You baited them to find you. With bad poetry? Why would you do that? No, don't answer that." She shakes her head and stretches her arms over her head before summoning her shroud-altered costume. "I'm all in favor of getting under her skin, but if you want her on your side..."

"I know, but she can darn well wait long enough for you to get dressed."

Forming the iris door again, I open it far enough for the instantly recognizable cape to float through. Instead she chooses to hover just outside. You know what? Fine, if she wants possible eavesdroppers that's up to her. "Please come with me. We need to talk."

"Ok, several things. First, I can't go anywhere until at least a few days after Bakuda's dealt with. Second, your experiment here disgusts me, so you'll need a warrant if you want me going anywhere with you." She starts to bristle, but I keep going. "Third, the message was for Fortuna, not you. And fourth, did you really have to ring my tent like a gong at six in the morning?"

"I don't need a warrant to bring in someone who's harboring a known fugitive-" She starts, looking toward Lisa.

"Oh pull the other one. She was operating under duress and you know it. Coil's one of Cauldron's." Alexandria freezes at those words, body stiller than any statue. Without her power it would be impossible to be that still.

"Wait. What? Coil had Triumvirate backing!? What the actual fuck!?" I can feel Tattletale starting to panic.

"Calm down. Even if they try to birdcage you, you can teleport to me, and if they kill you you'll get better."

"How. Do. You. Know. Those. Names."

"Do you want to continue this conversation in the doorway? Or would you like to come in where we can secure the area?"

That metal helmet she wears seems designed to magnify the effect of a glare. Heck, it probably is, some graphic artist somewhere was assigned to make her more intimidating. To be fair it does a decent job of it, but I know her weakness, and how to exploit it. Me and my girls? We don't need to breathe thanks to Wild Defense. Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but knowing makes her less threatening.

Thus I'm actually rather nonchalant about withdrawing my head from the door a little so she can get through. The glare precedes her slightly, but then I'm closing the door while bringing up the lights I still have lining the ceiling. Outside I can feel the shroud respond to my will, adding another layer separated from the existing shell by hard vacuum. The whole structure lifts a meter or so to extend the isolation layer beneath our feet, and then the inner surface turns to a mirror bright sheen as its conductivity approaches infinity. "Rein, barrier and seal if you would. Careful of her agent." I say it aloud so Alexandria isn't startled by the spinning triangular glyphs.

The odd color-shift washes over us as the shelter moves half a dimension to the purple, and I settle my bulk to the floor. "Very well, we're as secure as I know how."

The woman taps the side of her helmet a few times, presumably switching between communication modes, then speaks a few words in languages I don't know. I assume they're variants on 'door me', but with the dimensional seal in place Clairvoyant shouldn't be able to observe her. We have trace defense, but Alexandria doesn't, and it wouldn't do to get spied on here.

"Impressive."

"I have a good team. Now, you wanted to know where I heard those names. The answer is quite simple. I once had the opportunity to read the writings of a man you would likely rate a thinker fifteen." I snort, ruffling her hair. "Unfortunately for him, though fortunate for you, his visions reached too far. He could see what becomes of this place, but not of his own world. I thought his writings a mere flight of fancy once, and now I find myself eating my own words, wishing I remembered them better. And no, before you ask, I have no way to get back there. I have only the tools and companions I've gathered in my journey, and distant memories of a history text about a world I never thought I'd see."

The woman starts to speak, seemingly taken aback, but I resume before she does. "I'm afraid I've already thrown that future history awry by my arrival. Some broad strokes are likely to remain the same, but the little details? The one-in-a-million chances that let humanity scrape a victory by the skin of their teeth on Golden Morning? I can't believe that all of those will go the same way with me here. Which is a problem for us, as we're stuck here for a while."

"Golden Morning?"

"When Zion attacked. You lot did something understandable but ill advised, allowing Jack Slash to talk to him. You wanted the war over with before the endbringers finished civilization off, and with it all chance of victory. You would have lost, if not for Khepri, who ah, third triggered? Something like that. Anyway, she became a master twelve-plus, managed to impose order on the disorganized mob your plan produced instead of an army. Seriously that was a dumb plan. Armies need training, discipline, order. Fortuna's original world, they still use peasant levies don't they? That's what you've been building. Anyway, my arrival almost certainly butterflied her away, even if all I did was find a parking lot to take a nap in until Golden Morning.

"And quite frankly? It really was a skinned teeth 'victory'. The death toll was in the tens of billions immediately, dozens of worlds had holes blown in them deep enough to make them uninhabitable eventually, which would bring the long-term losses into the trillions. Recovery wasn't guaranteed, a small percent of new triggers and second triggers started making more endbringer-like things, everything was still going to hell, just slower. On the other hand, if The Path were released from the chains Abbadon placed upon it before 'gifting' it to Eden, and the chains Eden placed upon it to stop Fortuna from killing her, and the chains placed on all agents to allow entities to reclaim them at the end of the cycle… Well, then Zion could be eliminated cleanly. There would be no Golden Morning, no slaughter of the human race."

Alexandria is silent for a while, considering that info dump. I know she has a solid thinker rating of her own, so a couple minutes of silence to contemplate from her is equivalent to most remaining so for twenty minutes. Eventually though she speaks up. "So you're trying to fix what you broke merely by existing. Or so you claim. What about the fourth chain? The one that replaces the three?"

Behind me Tattletale is feeling some rather intense amusement. "Your poetry deeply offends her."

"If we ever find Vogons, I'll send her a compilation." She has to fight not to snicker at the mental image. Alexandria notices something, but I doubt she can draw the correct conclusion.

"Shards are just living computers of immense scale. I can hack them. Unfortunately I can't hack my own power, so it has a rather awkward Manton limit. Female parahumans only, though I suspect Panacea could help bypass that limitation if we got her on board. Anyway, to unchain powers from their entities, I have to gain root access."

The woman looks at my companions, a knowing expression as she reassesses the way they look at me. "It has a sexual aspect."

"It does. I'd like to point out that all three of the women I've used it on so far knew that ahead of time and gave consent before I used it. I would have preferred to only inform Fortuna of that aspect. The rest of the arrangement can reasonably be voted upon, but she deserves to keep her sexual choices private if she wants. Too late now."

"Indeed." She pauses again. "You'll understand if we don't take you at your word."

"Of course." Turning my neck, I look back, one eye still trained on Alexandria while the other looks at my girls. "Rein, I think you can… Actually, one more thing before you leave Alexandria. A gesture of goodwill. Tell Eidolon to seek out the energy transfer power. He should be able to drain other parahumans to restore his power."

Funny, she maintained her composure through all the bombs I dropped on her, but that one makes her jaw drop. Turning my head to look at her with both eyes again I add "Personally, I think it's a better way to deal with super criminals than The Birdcage. Feed their powers to Eidolon and stick them in mundane supermax. If their power starts to come back, he can drain them again. Ok Rein, now you can drop the seal and barrier"

The purple cast to the room fades, and there's a subconscious squelching taste as we rejoin mainline Earth Bet. Refilling the vacuum gap and reverting the superconductive faraday cage, I open the door to let Alexandria out.

As she flies away Pyrrha asks "Do you think they'll take the offer?"

"They don't have a choice, and she knows it." Tattletale sounds supremely smug about the situation. I can't blame her, I'm feeling pretty smug myself. Twisting my neck around, I give her a nuzzle that nearly knocks her over until she grabs hold, then give one to Pyrrha too. Rein is too small for the gesture right now.

"They don't, but they won't want to admit that. Not yet. Maybe after Eidolon tries my suggestion?"

"Yeah." *Beedledebeep* Tattletale's phone rings from nowhere, her shroud having subsumed it, but her mind still expects it to ring when called. She starts to reach for the pocket she kept it in, before aborting the movement and just answering directly. Circuitry flows up from the neck of her costume to cover her ear, and she speaks to the air. "Hi Skitter. I got what I was looking for and a bit more. Tell you in person, meet me at the Brockton General rally point." "Sorry, gotta go."

"Hey, she's your teammate. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Just let us know if you need help."

"No, I'm not hurt, WarMaiden's boss is Glaurung, the big dragon helping out... Yeah, he shelled out another of those skinsuits... No, just the one... Hi Grue, I'm fine, spent the night at WarMaiden's base while Glaurung upgraded my costume… See you soon." The lights on the outside of her earpiece fade when she hangs up the call, and she turns to Pyrrha and Rein. "You girls available to help again today?"

"I'd say it's up to you." I answer when they look to me. "I'd go too if I weren't helping more by sitting here. Just remember, if you get killed, you're coming back to a spanking… Oh, and if you happen to enjoy spankings, then I'll find something else." I fix my eye on Rein for the last bit, but she just tilts her head without blushing. "Guess not. Go have fun girls."

As they walk away, I allow my shelter to retract into the ground, streeeeeeeeeetching my wings and arching my back like an enormous cat. Even my tongue rolls out and I find myself yawning as part of it. Oh wow that feels good. Sitting up on my haunches, I wrap my tail around my feet and bring up a bunch of holographic screens with my shroud, settling in to watch the goings-on at my overflow hospital and keep up with the news while I wait.

A couple hours later I notice someone approaching me from behind on the sensors provided by my shroud. Turning my neck to take a look, it's a bit trippy to be able to turn my head easily 180 degrees, I find a news van driving up in the parking lot behind me. A quick sweep with various alternate vision modes and they don't appear to be carrying any weapons. Including no cranial bombs as far as I can tell.

"Hey, you busy?"

"Not this second."

"Can you jump back here and scan these guys for any Bakuda bombs? They smell nervous, but that could easily just be me."

"Sure."

There's a flash of light and Rein's hovering next to my head. "They're clean." She declares after a moment. "The camera man has rank C potential, but the rest are flats." Darting in closer she gives me a kiss on the side of my muzzle, then disappears in another flash of light.

"Please tell me you got that." I hear a female voice say, sounding amused. Probably the reporter.

"No, sorry. I wasn't rolling yet."

"Darn. Would've made a great splash for the interview spot. Oh well." Camera man now in tow, she walks toward me at an angle, looking to circle around. I meet her halfway, standing up and turning to face along the sidewalk instead of out across the street. "Holy crap he's big. He looks like he could punt an Endbringer."

"I doubt it." I reply, curving my neck down to bring my head close enough to let the camera man get me in the same frame as the reporter. "I may be larger, but they still weigh more than I do." She just stares at my head a few feet from her, eyes wide and face white.

"I-I don't normally say this, but please don't smile for the camera?"

"Heh heh heh heh… I'll try." I can see people a fair distance away turning to look when I laugh. "So what does Brockton Four want to ask about?"

"Everything, of course!" She reverts to training, voice chipper even though her face is still pale under the makeup. Turning to face the camera, she speaks to the audience. "Representing Brockton Four, I'm Clarice Marrow, here with-" She points the microphone at me.

"Glaurung."

"And where did you get that name?"

"Tolkien. Yeah, his Glaurung was evil, but let's face it, good dragons in mythology basically don't exist outside East Asia. Taking one of those in this city seemed like a bad idea." Clarice grimaces when I say that, but nods agreement. "I'm also the wrong shape."

"So you like to read?"

"Yeah, haven't had much time recently, you know how it goes. Claws are kinda harsh on paper too."

"I can see that being a problem. So are you stuck like this? If claws are always a problem."

"Well, I can get smaller. I'd do that for this interview, but the range of my shaker power shrinks with me. I think the doctors across the street at that overflow hospital might find that a bit inconvenient." She nods, then continues her questions. "So I'm sure folks at home want to know why you're hanging out this close to the hospital, instead of jumping into the fighting like the rest of the capes."

"As I just mentioned, that overflow hospital-" I jerk my head in that direction "is created with my shaker power, so I need to stay in-range or it'll disappear after a while. I don't actually know how long things I made last if I leave, but a hospital is really not the thing to experiment with." Spreading one wing like a gigantic billboard over the highway, I light up the red cross still emblazoned across the surface. "That's why I'm wearing these right now. I may not be able to get 'hands on', but I'm proud to be part of the medical response to the current emergency."

"That's lovely. We don't get nearly enough Capes choosing to stay peaceful. So what does our local celebrity Panacea think of your assistance?"

"You'd have to ask her, we haven't met. I'm stuck here, and I expect she's rather busy at the moment."

"I can imagine. So what are your plans after things are over? Planning to stick around?"

"Well, I'll be stuck here a few days regardless. I told the doctors I'd give them the overflow for a week before I start getting grumpy."

"Ooh! I certainly wouldn't want you grumpy at me! Should they be worried?"

"Well, I'm not going to hurt them. Discomfort and/or humiliation is on the table if they push it though."

"I see." Her mind is clearly dreaming up scenarios. "And after the overflow is emptied, are you sticking around the Bay?"

"Possibly, I'll have to see what the future holds. Traveling sounds nice, I don't even have to pay airfare anymore." I wink for the camera. "Maybe I'll drag all those sunken boats out of the bay first. It'll take a few weeks, but I figure I can get some money for the salvage"

"I'm not sure the city will pay for that."

"Oh, they don't have to… I think. I'm not actually from Earth Bet, but if maritime salvage laws are mostly the same then the ship owners would be legally obligated to pay me for salvaging them even if they didn't ask me to."

"Really?"

"IF they're the same. I'll have to ask my lawyer before starting. That nepa five thing might be a problem, but I don't think so. I wouldn't be competing with an existing salvage business because there isn't one. That's the problem."

"Well, that will make you a few friends around here."

The rest of the day after the interview is relatively uneventful where I'm located. My girls end up diving into the fighting again, but with Tattles upgraded too now, the Undersiders seem to be playing the entire ABB for fools at the same time. Rein's unison effects have them convinced there are eleven members now, hopping back and forth to alter appearances and boost powers. Apparently Grue's fog is particularly nasty with her help, the ice-affinity built into her making it leave a layer of ice on the surface of anything and anyone caught in it. Not very thick, but thick enough to rip out hair when it's pulled off.

They're quickly closing in on Bakuda's hideout, eager for payback from the storage lot. I don't remember exactly how long it was supposed to take in canon, but this is definitely shorter. Coil's mercs are having a hard time of it though, I can only imagine what he thinks is going on when Rein jumps around and catches the remaining undersiders in her Trace Defence for a bit.

The girls work far into the night. My trio is bolstered by my perks, and I suppose Skitter is just, well, Skitter, but Bitch apparently swaps out her dogs while Grue and Regent call it a night. Down a couple members, they continue harassing the ABB with pinpoint precision, Wide Area Scans and insect swarms providing unmatched intel, while the ability of three to teleport to each other allows them to split up only to rejoin in an instant.

It's a bit nerve-wracking for me though. While their deaths might not be a worry, Bakuda has already hit Skitter with that pain bomb, and I know she has grey-boy bombs. I don't know if Warranty would cover being frozen in time. If my plan works out I'm sure Contessa will be able to figure out a way to free them from any shard-based effect, but they could still suffer greatly in that time.

Casting a grumpy look toward the overflow hospital, I grumble discontentedly. No, I wouldn't actually be all that helpful where they are, because I don't have a way to recover from death yet, but I still resent the practicality of my decision while worrying fruitlessly about them. With a sigh, I rest my head on my paws again, glad the recreated shelter keeps anyone from having seen that. "Be careful."

"Yes Master!" Rein replies. Cheerful and respectful in much the way Tattletale's "Yeah, yeah." isn't.

"We got her." The message comes in the wee hours of the morning.

"Her toes?"

"Gone, Pyrrha cut her off at the knees. The deadman's switch listens to me now."

"Well done."

"You want us to turn her over to the PRT? Or do you want to bind and sell? She kind of has it coming."

"PRT. Take her hands first though, we don't need her figuring out how to tinker in captivity."

"Is that… necessary?" Pyrrha asks. "We've stripped her down."

"In the original timeline she tinkered her way out of being encased in containment foam from the neck down. I have no idea how that works, but apparently it did. I'd prefer you cut her off at the hips and shoulders, but the PRT won't buy that as a combat injury."

"Oh." I can feel her disgust at doing it, along with the resignation that the woman really is too dangerous to be allowed hands. "It's done."

"I'm sorry I had to ask you to do that. Hang on, there's PRT troops around the overflow hospital, I'll go ask them where they want us to put her."

Standing up, I retract the shelter again and step across the street. Unsurprisingly every officer in the vicinity, PRT and police alike turns to look. "As you were officers. I just need to talk to whoever's in charge."

Most do indeed return to what they were doing. A couple go for their radios to call in the request

"Glaurung?" A voice calls from over by the nearest doors into the building. "I'm Lieutenant Sanders. What'd you need?"

"My teammates report their capture of Bakuda. Where do you want them to put her?" The various officers in the vicinity display a distinct lack of professionalism by jumping up and down cheering. "Ahem!" Most of them startle, and a few hands drop to service weapons, not that pistols will do much to me in this form. No one actually draws though, so they have that in their favor. Being twitchy under the circumstances is forgivable. "As I asked, where do you want her? Well, where do your bosses want her, since I doubt it's your call."

"Assuming you can't drop her directly in the Birdcage, take her to the shore side of The Rig's forcefield bridge."

"Even if we could, I don't think Dragon would like that." I snark, forwarding the information to my girls.

A flash of light heralds my girls showing up in my shelter after dropping off Bakuda. "Hellooooo Ladies… Sorry Skitter, I didn't know we were expecting guests." The walls and floor near where they all just showed up start flowing into furniture, starting with an overstuffed couch. The thing's a bit excessive on the neon trim, but properly squashy. All three of the full-size girls flop into it, while Rein flits up to flop on top of my muzzle instead. "Awww." She gets a seatbelt to hold her in place while… Ok, I guess debriefing can wait, they're all out cold.

Slowly morphing that couch into a bed, I split skitter's off to the side a bit and override Lisa and Pyrrha's shrouds to turn into pajamas. Proper debriefing can wait for sleep.

"Huh? What the-" Skitter is the first to stirr. It's a little surprising, she does need more sleep than my girls do, but I suppose they subconsciously feel safe around me, whereas Skitter most definitely does not, at least not yet. She's still a squishy human trying to sleep in the same room as a three thousand ton dragon."

"Good morning."

"Did you move me to a bed?"

"No, I turned the couch into a bed. All of you just passed out when you sat down. Long week?"

"Yeah." She twists her body back and forth, and I can hear a ripping series of pops that a teenage spine has no business making.

"Yikes! You seen a doctor about that?"

"Haven't had time." she grumbles. "Or the money" Taking a deep breath, she shifts the topic. "What did you do to Tattletale?" Her tone is accusing. "She's different now. Did you master her?"

"So, plus a couple hundred points for loyalty and bravery, minus a couple thousand for accusing someone of mastering your friend while standing right in front of him. I'd give the points back if that swarm outside could get in, so I guess you get partial credit. This building isn't exactly built to code, airtightness isn't usually allowed."

Forming another couch to her left, I gesture with one claw. "Please, have a seat. We can have a civilized discussion, though some answers will have to wait for Lisa to wake up. I don't know what she's told you, and I don't want to trample on her secrets." She stiffens when I drop Tattle's real name, but I just wait for her to sit in the offered chair. "Like most things in life, the answer's a bit more complicated than you might prefer. In short, yes, but she asked me to."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"One of the side effects of my master power is making the subject immune to Thinker Headaches." I give her a smirk, careful to keep my teeth hidden. "From her perspective it's more that my power to cure Thinker Headaches has a weak master power as a side effect." She just stares at me. Or I assume so, given the one-way lenses in her mask.

One thing all the fan-fiction I read gets wrong, and which Wildbow never mentioned since she's the viewpoint character. Skitter's creepiness isn't just the costume. It's not even the way she doesn't need to turn her head to focus on you, though she can't currently pull that here. She moves like an insect. Perfect stillness interrupted by sudden bursts of movement when she shifts from one posture to another. If her costume had hard carapace armor panels instead of a silk bodysuit, it wouldn't be hard to assume she's a monster cape. Her mask is that good.

Of course, that bodysuit deserves its own chapter. The thing is skin-tight, even with the extra armor panels it leaves basically nothing to the imagination. The body it doesn't bother to hide isn't anything special, but there's nothing really wrong with it either. She has that ganglyness you see in teenagers who are growing faster than they can eat, which looks odd on a girl who's already closing on six feet. Pyrrha's about the same height, she's just much more filled out, mostly with muscle. The overall effect in-costume is of a stick bug in a person suit. The suit's really good, but she's trying and failing to human.

"How weak is weak?"

"Forced empathy. If I'm feeling happy or sad or smug she feels it too, but she can tell it's coming from me. It's actually two-way, so far most of the smug is coming from her end." Adding a wink to that manages to crack her shell just a little. She snorts, once, with suppressed laughter, then goes back to glaring at me. "Tough crowd. Look, this isn't really the time for this, Lisa deserves to be part of the conversation and I'm not going to wake her up for it. Go home, take a shower, get some real sleep without your lizard brain screaming about the giant dragon, then come back. I'm stuck here for a few more days until they start clearing patients out of that overflow hospital."

Skitter just stares at me some more. Why the fuck is that intimidating? I'm several hundred times her size and immune to mental effects! It's not that intimidating, but it should be like getting growled at by a teacup poodle puppy. I should want to issue headpats, not back away. "You're obviously not running on all cylinders given that you made that accusation in private with the accused master. The fact that you were right just makes it worse. I know you're smarter than that."

"Fine, but if you try to steal her away I will find you." Standing up she turns to leave and comes up short. "Where's the door?" I form the iris for her, along with a tunnel of bug-screening before opening it, and watch as the swarm pours into my home. Skitter disappears into the mass and then she's gone. I retract the bug screening flush with the door before closing it, catching a few she tried to leave behind. "Fuck that's creepy when she does that."

"She's good at that."

"You're awake."

"Have been for a minute. I would have stepped in but-" Lisa is interrupted by a yawn. "-then Skits would've insisted on having that conversation now instead of getting some much needed sleep."

"Good afternoon." I greet as Skitter walks up. We're out in the open this time, sort of, I have a table sprouting from one of the green spaces around the parking lot, and a couple comfortable patio chair like objects arranged next to it. The whole thing has some privacy screening around it, but not enough to keep someone from leaving in a hurry. "You're looking a bit more human. Sleep well?"

She ignores me to hug Tattles, the girls holding each other tight. Lisa's return hug is a bit calmer than Skitter's worried grasp. "I'm fine. Really. I ran my power eight hours straight last night with no headache!" The raw joy in that statement doesn't really match with her usual snarky demeanor.

"But you're mastered. That's not okay!"

"And he told me the consequences ahead of time. I knew what I was getting into." Letting go of Skitter, she takes a seat, waving at the other one. "Have a seat. There's more you need to know. I didn't come to Glaurung for the tinkertech-" She extends a few clawed tendrils from her wrist. "-or the headache cure, I didn't even know he could do that." She shrugs. "I came to find the power granting trump who made WarMaiden and SnowFairy immune to thinkers. See, none of us actually want to be villains. Regent just wants somewhere to be safe from his dad and play video games. Bitch just wants to take care of her dogs, Grue just wants to take care of his sister, you're undercover-" Skitter startles and almost falls over backwards in her chair. "-What, you didn't think I'd notice? You needed a friend, I needed a friend, what's one more teammate who doesn't actually want to be a villain? Anyway, I just want to live a peaceful life. Well, and the opportunity to verbally dismantle idiots until they cry." I can't see Skitter's eyes, but the head motion is indicative of an eye-roll.

"The problem is Coil. That's our employer. The thing is, he doesn't care about the unwritten rules, and he has leverage on all of us. Regent's dad, Bitch's dogs, Grue's sister…" She trails off leadingly. Skitter is still as the grave for a few seconds, then tenses up.

"Nooo…"

Tattletale nods sadly. "Yeah. In a few months I'm sure he'd be 'getting an offer he can't refuse'. Me? I was recruited with a gun to my head. Work for Coil or die. He then proceeded to prove his thinker rating is higher than mine was. I didn't know what it was, I just knew I couldn't escape. Nowhere I could run that he couldn't catch me. Ever since I've been looking for ways out from under his thumb."

"Th-then why did you…?" Skitter trails off, letting the question stand without completion.

"Invite you? I was the soft sell, if I didn't pull you in he'd have gone after your father to force you in." She shrugs. "Honestly, if all I wanted was an ally against Coil, that probably would have worked better for me. I already owed you for the Lung thing though, and I needed a friend." Picking up her coffee from the table, she slurps noisily before continuing. "Anyway, I noticed that us just being near Glaurung's teammates was throwing Coil off his game. The orders he gave his mercs were actually wrong sometimes. It was the best chance I was going to get, for me and for the rest of the Undersiders. So I took it." She smiles fondly at me, and there's a spark in her eye that implies promises for later.

"You have anything to add?" Skitter asks me when Tattletale pauses.

"I could, but Tattles loves explaining everything."

"Aww, he's so sweet." Skitter's head whips back around to face Tattletale, staring at the sound of her friend's voice. "Ahem. So. First off he's a changer. He gets smaller, a LOT smaller, and he has a dragon-man form. On the other hand, when he does that it takes WarMaiden and SnowFairy working together to keep that hospital he built standing, so he's stuck for the moment. That's important because, well…" Tattletale blushes. "He left some things out earlier, about his master power. He wanted to let me choose whether to tell you. Which, that right there? Letting the person he's mastered decide how much to tell? Not typical master behavior huh?

"Anyway, the forced empathy is true, but it also makes me attracted to him. There's some loyalty in there too, but it's just that, Loyalty, not Obedience. If he tells me to do something dumb I can tell him to shove it." She gives me a smug grin. "I can even do things that cause him problems if I think that's best for him. Like telling you he's already decided he won't master you even if you ask, because you need friends more than lovers right now. Even if it would make you immortal."

All I can do is give Tattles a dumbfounded stare. "What the actual fuck Lisa!?"

"Hehehe."

"Uggh… Tattles, whyyyyy." A proper slapping facepalm might hurt someone, but a slow ponderous one still gets the message across. Bringing my paw up and over, I lay it across my snout with a groan that registers on seismometers.

"W-wait, lovers!? You think I'd- Wait, you- You've… you and him… You… I thought you weren't interested in…" Well, at least Skitter is completely off balance now. "You only said it makes you think he's hot."

"It does, but it's been two years since I could even masturbate, never mind finding a lover. My power always got in the way, pointing out every turn-off it could whenever I tried. Skitter, I would have slept with him just for the thinker immunity, even if his power didn't make me attracted to him." She starts laughing, and I can feel her arousal rising as she thinks back on our encounter. "Fuuuuck I had no idea what I was missing."

Skitter starts coughing, maybe she inhaled some of her own spit while gibbering at Tattletale? Tats is definitely feeling smug enough. After a minute the coughing tapers off and she just glares at Lisa. "That was deliberate."

"Maybe, maybe not." She slurps at her coffee again. "You were worried about me being 'giddy' yesterday when we met up, less bitchy, however you want to put it. The explanation's very simple. I'm finally free, and I got laid. It was wonderful." Putting down her coffee, she grins in a way that promises embarrassment for someone. "And tonight I'm going to kill Coil, then I'm going to get laid again." Skitter's shoulders come up to hide a blush that's already hidden by her costume. Lisa just chuckles. "Once he's dead I can go legit, your undercover op can end with rescuing The Mayor's Niece, and I can clean out enough of Coil's money to get the rest of the Undersiders what they want."

She gives Skitter a minute to process that, before dropping another bombshell. "Oh, have you watched Brockton Four today?"

"Really Lisa?"

"Really."

"No? Aren't they just showing stuff about Bakuda's arrest?"

"And the teams that did it. Undersiders and Outworlders. They have an interview with lover-dragon here-" I bring my other paw up to join in another facepalm. "-where he mentioned the possibility of clearing out the graveyard for profit."

I hear Skitter sniffling, smell the salt tears on the air, and then I suddenly have fucking Khepri attached to my face. She's sobbing and all the bugs in the fucking world are buzzing in-time with her tears. I know she's not Khepri yet, probably never will be on this timeline, but I still have a crying god-slayer attached to my face. What do I do? Lisa's raw amusement pouring through the shroud really doesn't help, she's barely capable of holding back from laughing. Pyrrha and Rein pop in when they feel my reaction, only to join Lisa in not fucking helping. Their amusement sends Lisa over the line, and she starts cackling out loud.

After a minute Lisa gets herself under enough control to come over and hug Skitter from behind, and the girl starts to calm down, still sobbing with happiness but without the billion-wing accompaniment. Choked tears make way for slow deep breaths, and I can finally make out the repeated "thank you thank you thank you."

"Uhhh…" "Yeah, I know why she's so happy, but how do I reveal I know without revealing I know who her dad is?"

"The docks mean a lot to her family." Tattletale cuts straight to the heart of it. She probably rips band aids off all at once too. "I'm sure they can arrange an old cargo yard if you want a more permanent base than this parking lot. Once you're done with the hospital."

"That'd be cool."

"Of course, she'd have to actually talk to them to arrange that." Oh you magnificent bitch. Skitter goes perfectly still again, still leaning on my nose. She's hyperventilating now, but at least she's not crying.

"That's right, nice deep breaths of that wonderful musk."

"Ok, seriously Lisa, cut it out."

"No."

"That plan of yours, the one to get laid again after killing Coil? Do you want that to go as planned? Or would you rather get couched after killing him?"

"Fiiiine."

"Also, give me back my pants, the man isn't supposed to be threatening the woman with the couch, that's backwards."

6546813789. Punching the number into the keypad, she waits for the door to hiss open. Coil's fondness for face-concealing visors on his mercenaries is mighty convenient for the moment. Sgt. Suthers will unfortunately catch the blame for many things he won't be doing, but dead men don't care much about blame.

"Suthers! About time, offload at the armory, then report for debriefing."

"Sir!" The voice is nothing like her own, exactly as it should be. The passageways of the underground bunker are unfamiliar, yet familiar. The patterns of construction revealing details about the layout as found in the minds of the builders years ago. Running her power like this, constant observation of every tiniest detail, is a luxury beyond dreaming. It lets her walk the halls with the confidence of someone who lives here, instead of only ever visiting in alternate timelines where she's doomed to die.

The armory is right where it should be, and empty at this time of the shift. Cage after locked cage containing tinkertech body armor and weapons. Cameras overhead monitor every centimeter of the facility, but they're welcome to it. She starts stripping down the armor, and where it lands on the counter little tendrils of cyber shroud drill through the surface to tap into the base's computer network. "All yours Rein."

"I'm in. One moment… Visual filters engaged. Locating self destruct triggers… Done. Disabling… Done. Ooh, lighting and emergency lighting controls.

The distinctive sounds of the lockdown latches slamming home echoes through his base in both timelines

He presses a button on his desk. "What's the reason for the lockdown?"

He presses a button on his desk. Behind him a door concealed in the wall hisses open. Turning to face it he-

No. No no nonononononononono! Bakuda's gone. The PRT has her, they're cleaning up her bombs.

Music starts playing over the PA. None of the commands he tries sending from his terminal make it stop. Nothing gives him control to call out to his men.

music

Trying again to open the escape tunnel, the pneumatic pistons hiss, then grind, then start buzzing in tune with the music, door opened just enough to slip a finger through.

Continuing to work his terminal, he tries system after system, searching for anything he still controls. Nothing, there's nothing he can do.

Standing up, he races for the hatch and drops to his knees. Wedging his fingers into the joint, he tries to pry it open further.

PAIN There's a moment of shock as the hatch suddenly shuts with his fingers still in the door, severing them messily. Blood pours out, but he fights through the pain to press the stumps against his suit jacket, letting the tight weave staunch the flow. "Fuck." With no fingers he can't use the first aid kit, and he already knows his emergency call button is offline. "Ok, think. I can still-

"Hello Coil." That voice! What's she doing here!? How did she get this deep!?

"We're going to have a looooot of fun together. Or I will, you've already had your fun torturing me to death haven't you? How many times? Five? Ten? Twenty three? Really? You are one sick fuck, but we already knew that."

Cables spring from Tattletale's wrists and shoot across the room. The tips heat red hot as they latch onto the stumps of his fingers and he screams again. "You don't get to die without permission Thomas. Oh yes, I know that too."

Fuck it, owing them more favors will mean being alive to owe them. "Door me." Nothing happens.

"Oh, so sorry, Clairvoyant can't see you right now Thomas. This time you're stuck in here with me, and we have all the time in the world." More of those tinkertech tentacles sprout from her new costume, who made it, when did she have the time? He knows she didn't have that kind of budget. "I slept with the tinker." She answers the unasked question. "Oh? You know about my problems with intimacy? Maybe you shouldn't have made sure you were the worse option."

When Tattletale teleports in that night, my nose starts twitching. "You reek of blood." I don't have to ask whose it is, I could feel the progression of her emotions as she set up for the strike, infiltrated the base, locked him in his own office, and squeezed him for every last morsel of information before finishing him off. More than a year of her life spent working toward that goal, and it's finally finished. Now she just feels kind of empty, floaty. A great weight has been not merely lightened, but removed entirely. "Have fun?"

"Fun isn't the right word. I got justice, for all the things he did, and all the things he was planning to do. Skitter, WarMaiden, and SnowFairy have Dinah, they're taking her to the Rig. The 'doctor' Coil had handling her…" She shudders. "He raped her. She doesn't remember, she was too drugged, but Coil knew. It wasn't… It wasn't just her. He didn't keep any records but…" She shudders, wrapping her arms around herself. I'm limited in the comfort I can offer, the size scales too far different like this, but I do what I can. Scooping her up in one paw, I curl the fingers around protectively and cradle her close. It's a gesture that probably wouldn't work very well as a comfort if she couldn't feel my emotions on the topic.

Some time later, seconds, minutes, an hour? It doesn't matter. Lisa speaks up again. "I was looking forward to fucking you again, but now I just-"

"Hmm, don't worry about it. We have the rest of time."

"Well, that's over." Rein reports in.

"So, how'd it go?"

"Well enough. Armsmaster was eager to verify Skitters undercover claim now that she succeeded. The records from his base were enough to prove coercion for pretty much everything the Undersiders did. Did you know he was sitting on evidence that exonerates Bitch of her original murder charge?"

"Can't say I'm surprised, but I don't remember that bit. Anything else interesting?"

"Not particularly. Stalker's not on the Rig today, so we skipped that drama for now. Armsmaster wants mechashift technology. He wasn't happy when WarMaiden told him it relies on rare earths not found on Bet. But he's offered to buy any Dust we find and don't use ourselves."

"If Pyrrha's workshop allotment weren't limited…"

"Yeah."
