Chapter 608 - Chapter 608: Let Us Lie Together

Regarding the matter of Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, there was no need to be overly explicit. The days when he was active as a primary lead in the comics predated the era of major crossover events; he had died so early that most people barely recognized him.

However, in the current Earth-616 universe, Peter and the others were actually keeping certain things from Mar-Vell—specifically, almost everything related to the Kree Empire.

There was a high probability that the preparations for S.W.O.R.D. were intended to defend against a Kree invasion. Even setting aside what Peter knew personally, based solely on intelligence gathered from various sources, including the Wasteland Universe, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers had been constantly vigilant against a potential Kree incursion, much like they were guarding against a possible Secret Invasion.

The establishment of S.W.O.R.D. was likely aimed at countering a potential Kree fleet, as a large number of Kang's warships had been salvaged. It was only because this event had not yet occurred, combined with Thor's previous remark—that when a civilization prepares a vast arsenal for interstellar warfare, other civilizations view it as a declaration of readiness for war—that Earth had been conducting its preparations in secret.

Of course, there were other realistic factors at play, but those were secondary.

So, in this universe, what reason would the Kree have to invade Earth? First, it wouldn't be a surprise maneuver to cull the Skrulls; Earth sat at the edge of a galactic arm, a location quite remote for both empires. Second was the possibility of a Secret Invasion; if the Skrulls attacked Earth first, the Kree might follow.

Therefore, even though it seemed absurd to Mar-Vell, Fury insisted that he design a set of equipment capable of detecting Skrull DNA to prevent a covert infiltration.

If even the Skrulls were ruled out, did the Kree Empire still have a reason to invade?

Yes. While not a certainty, if the Kree Empire discovered that the Inhumans were not extinct, they would indeed have a pretext to invade Earth.

The Inhumans were, of course, still alive. Thousands of years ago, they had eliminated the Kree soldiers guarding them and began reverse-engineering their captors' technology, eventually migrating to the Moon on the eve of World War II. Due to centuries of isolated breeding, the entire Inhuman population now numbered fewer than 3,000, yet they endured.

This served as a casus belli. To prevent a potential Kree invasion, everyone who knew of the Inhumans' existence from the Wasteland Universe was keeping the secret from Mar-Vell to ensure he didn't report back to the Kree Empire. After all, Earth was not yet ready for war with them.

Beyond that, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers had attempted to contact the Inhumans, but unfortunately, they received no response; the other party seemed unwilling to communicate.

Thus, Peter didn't mention that in some universes where Mar-Vell survived, the Kree Empire had invaded Earth; he merely explained the simplest aspects of the situation. Upon hearing this, Mar-Vell stunned for a moment, then scratched his head in disbelief, asking in confusion, "Are there no universes where I simply... live?"

"There are, brother, surely there are. I just haven't encountered them yet. At least in the universes I know of where you exist, you're usually dead. Only one survived."

Mar-Vell perked up at this, asking curiously, "So what happened in the universe where I didn't die?"

"A group of multiversal elder gods called the Many-Angled Ones resurrected you, turned you into a pathogen, and killed the concept of Death in that universe. Since then, the universe itself has become cancerous, so..."

Peter watched as the man's expression visibly crumbled. Mar-Vell had hoped to hear about a great destiny, but the results were either death or a fate worse than death. He let out a helpless sigh. Peter offered some comfort: "At least you're healthy right now, right? As long as you get regular checkups, you should catch anything early. Removing a tumor in the early stages of cancer isn't that hard."

"I hope so. Thank you, Spider-Man. You and your friend enjoy yourselves here at S.W.O.R.D. I... I'm going to go schedule a physical."

Watching Mar-Vell hurry away, Peter shrugged helplessly. He turned to see Cindy staring at some space plants and walked over. Most of the flora here were Earth plants that had undergone various mutations due to space radiation. Sensing Peter's approach, Cindy straightened up. "Is there somewhere else you want to go?"

"Actually... there is one place, but it's not on S.W.O.R.D. I want to take a trip to the Moon to see a friend I've never met." Peter walked to the corridor, looking at the massive moon through the porthole. "You've probably never seen him. He's called the Watcher. He has a giant bald head, and his only ability is to observe everything that happens in our universe and record it."

"If he can tell us what the bad guys are doing, can we stop them ahead of time?" Cindy asked curiously. If there really was an omniscient person willing to help, he was certainly worth a visit.

But Peter shook his head. "The Watcher's race once caused catastrophic consequences by interfering with the development of other civilizations, so they decided never to interfere randomly again. While there have been exceptions, given the current state of our world, he won't step forward."

"Alright then. Let's see what else is fun on this ship."

The Blue Area of the Moon.

"A million years ago, the Skrulls were a race that knew nothing of the concept of war. They developed cutting-edge technology in the cosmos, and relying on their shapeshifting and telepathic abilities, they could quickly empathize with other races, coexisting peacefully with all."

A man in blue with a massive bald head and glowing eyes walked through his current abode. He was the Watcher, and he was speaking to the readers.

"Then, they discovered the primitive Kree and brought them here. These are the ancient structures built by the Kree, and because of this, the Kree remembered the coordinates of Earth—but that is not the concern of the moment."

As the Watcher spoke, he turned his gaze toward Earth.

"We see that beneath the deep sea, in the distant depths of the ocean, something terrible is happening. But to trace its origin, we must turn back the clock even further. The source of this terrifying disaster comes from a place far, far away."

"Its name is Asgard, the home of the gods."
