Runa descended the hill.
Her steps were slow and regal. She passed the rows of towers, their shadows long across the field. Some leaned by the smallest fraction. Some trembled so faintly only she could feel it through the earth.
Kaelmor noticed her. His expression lit. "Runa," he breathed.
She kept her face calm.
The last tower rose behind him, only half-formed, stone spiraling upward in rings. Inside, the statue waited unfinished, its face still rough, its hands only suggestions.
Runa looked at the unfinished structure.
Then at him.
"Oh," she said softly, "you are really serious."
Kaelmor laughed.
It was breathless, exhausted, triumphant. "Did you think I was playing?"
"I hoped you were."
His smile sharpened. "No. This is the last one."
He spread his hand toward the tower field behind him.
Nine hundred ninety-nine towers stood beneath the fading moon.
A kingdom of obsession.
