Chapter 7 - A Wife in the Headlines

Xaviere's stern warning proved to be irritatingly prophetic by sunrise the next day. By nine o'clock the following morning, Zeraida's name dominated every major digital platform and tabloid front page.

The headline above her picture read:

[THE TROUBLED PAST OF THE NEW MRS. ARVENTINE.]

Directly beneath it, another article asked:

[RUNAWAY HEIRESS OR ATTENTION-SEEKING SOCIALITE?]

A series of unflattering photographs captured three years earlier suddenly flooded social media feeds. The pictures showed Zeraida leaving dimly lit venues alongside struggling actors, arguing heatedly with a Winterland security guard outside the family estate, lugging cardboard boxes down her apartment steps, and waiting in line for countless failed auditions.

Someone had meticulously constructed a spiteful narrative out of small, disconnected fragments of her past. The media framed her as a spoiled heiress who had selfishly abandoned her family responsibilities, a desperate woman chasing fame in an industry that continuously rejected her, and now, the manipulative wife of billionaire Xaviere Arventine.

Zeraida stared down at her illuminated phone screen while sitting inside her agency's dressing room.

"This is genuinely impressive work," she muttered, adjusting her makeup cape. "They somehow managed to make carrying basic moving boxes appear morally scandalous."

Her manager, Rhea, paced back and forth near the door, looking considerably less amused by the media circus.

"The horde of press waiting outside the building entrance is absolutely brutal today," Rhea warned, crossing her arms nervously. "Every microphone is pointed right at the driveway."

"I still have an official promotional appearance to make this afternoon," Zeraida said, placing her phone face down on the vanity table.

"Zeraida, consider the situation," Rhea pleaded, stopping in her tracks. "Walking through that crowd will be an absolute nightmare."

"I signed a legal contract with the organizers," Zeraida stated firmly, standing up from her seat. "I am attending the event as promised."

She refused to grant Xaviere the satisfaction of admitting he had been correct about the potential fallout.

Across the city, inside the top-floor boardroom of Arventine Holdings, the executive team faced a completely different kind of crisis.

"Our primary recommendation is total public distance until this media storm subsides," a senior communications adviser advised, pointing toward a presentation screen displaying the morning headlines.

Xaviere sat in complete silence at the head of the conference table, his long fingers resting on the armrests.

"Distance?" Xaviere echoed, his voice dropping into a low, flat register.

"No joint public appearances, no official statements released defending Mrs. Arventine, and no corporate involvement," the adviser elaborated quickly. "Allow her personal talent agency to navigate the scandal entirely on their own."

Another high-ranking director nodded in agreement across the long table. "The marriage is recent enough that the general public will completely understand your decision to stay out of the spotlight."

Xaviere's dark eyes narrowed, his gaze turning icy as he focused on the speaker.

"Understand what, precisely?" Xaviere inquired softly.

"Understand that her controversial past behavior does not reflect upon your personal character or this corporation," the executive answered, clearing his throat nervously.

A heavy, uncomfortable quiet descended upon the conference suite, nobody daring to break the silence.

Twenty minutes later, Xaviere exited the corporate headquarters without issuing a single instruction to his team.

At the downtown exhibition hall, Zeraida's promotional event had barely commenced when the attending reporters abandoned every question regarding the actual project.

"Mrs. Arventine, did you marry President Arventine solely to revive your failing acting career?" one journalist shouted over the clamor, pushing a microphone forward.

"Did the Winterland family secretly fund your acting ambitions before you ran away?" another voice demanded from the front row.

"Is it true that your husband deeply regrets the marriage after seeing these morning headlines?" a third reporter chimed in.

Zeraida maintained a perfectly straight posture, keeping her hands relaxed over her lap as she faced the blinding flashes.

"My acting career was established long before my personal marriage took place," she answered smoothly, refusing to display irritation.

A reporter in the middle aisle pushed past the security boundary, raising his voice above the crowd. "Has President Arventine flatly refused to appear beside you today because of the growing public scandal?"

Before Zeraida could deliver a response, the back of the auditorium suddenly erupted into chaotic shouting.

The horde of camera operators instantly turned their lenses away from the stage and toward the double doors of the entrance hall.

Xaviere Arventine strode into the venue without offering a glance to the surrounding press corps, his posture dark and commanding.

Zeraida's serene composure nearly slipped right there on stage as she watched him approach.

What on earth is he doing here? she thought, her pulse quickening despite her calm exterior.

He walked up the steps of the platform without acknowledging the shouting media personnel and stopped directly beside her chair. Without uttering a word, he reached out and wrapped his broad arm firmly around her waist, pulling her close to his side.

A rapid succession of camera shutter clicks filled the auditorium, brilliant white light flashing off every surface. Zeraida instinctively looked up at his stern profile, caught entirely off guard by his physical presence.

Xaviere turned his head to address the gathered reporters, his expression composed and unbothered.

"My wife attended this event today because she consistently honors her professional commitments," he announced calmly, his deep voice carrying easily across the silent room. "I strongly suggest you demonstrate an equal level of professionalism by focusing your questions on the project you were invited to cover."

An immediate silence blanketed the entire hall as the reporters lowered their recording devices. Zeraida said nothing, her body anchored against his side.

For once during the chaotic morning, neither did the surrounding press corps.

Later that afternoon, inside the private backseat of his luxury sedan, Zeraida finally turned her head to look at him as the driver navigated through traffic.

"I was under the impression you wanted me to cancel my appearance today," she said, evaluating his distant expression.

"I did want you to cancel," Xaviere replied, his focus remaining fixed on the passing city buildings outside his window.

"And yet you chose to show up at the venue," she pointed out, leaning slightly closer.

"My strategic advisers strongly recommended that Arventine Holdings distance itself from you entirely," he revealed, his tone even.

Zeraida blinked in surprise, her dark eyes searching his face. "And you simply ignored their advice?"

"Obviously," he answered without hesitation.

That is certainly interesting, she noted internally, folding her arms over her chest.

"Why would you do that?" she asked aloud.

Xaviere continued staring out the tinted glass window, his jaw firm. "You carry the title of Mrs. Arventine now. Any public humiliation directed toward your person naturally reflects upon my family name."

There it is, she realized, her brief surge of curiosity dissolving into familiar reality. It is always about protecting corporate reputation. Nothing personal about it.

Zeraida leaned back against the leather headrest, releasing a quiet breath. "Of course."

His dark eyes finally shifted away from the window to observe her face. "What do you mean by that?"

"Nothing at all," she replied smoothly, turning her focus back toward her side of the car.

Yet as the vehicle glided silently down the avenue, she could not erase the physical memory of his arm wrapped around her waist. Nor could she forget the quiet authority in his voice when he had referred to her as his wife in front of the entire room.

Perhaps Xaviere truly had appeared at the venue merely to safeguard the standing of Arventine Holdings. That logical explanation should have satisfied her mind completely.

Strangely, as she watched the city lights flicker outside, it did not satisfy her at all.
