"Do you see them?" Alcy's voice carried a note of impatience as she scanned the horizon, her massive sword resting against her shoulder.
Finn raised the magical scanning device to his eye, its enchanted lens piercing the distance. "Not yet..."
"Are we sure they come from this side?" Alcy shifted her weight, her fingers drumming against her blade's hilt.
"Yes." Vritra's voice was calm, certain. "I can sense their energy too. They are approaching from the northwest. Their presence is unmistakable."
Alcy frowned. "I don't sense anything."
"Your senses are not attuned to monarchic energy," Vritra explained. "It is different from mortal or draconic power. It is older. More primal."
"Damien does not make mistakes," Ais said, her voice quiet but firm. Her golden eyes were fixed on the horizon, her hand resting on Desperate's hilt.
Alcy sighed, her gaze drifting to the silent figure standing apart from the group. "Fair enough. I'm just... weirded out by this guy." She pointed a thumb at Igris, who stood motionless, his greatsword planted in the ground before him, his crimson cape billowing in the wind. He did not move. Did not blink. Did not seem to breathe.
"He is a shadow," Vritra said, a hint of amusement in her voice. "Shadows do not need to move to be present."
"Still creepy," Alcy muttered.
Finn lowered the scanning device. "I see something." His voice sharpened. "Stay alert. They are here."
"How many?" Vritra asked, her form already beginning to shift, shadows coiling around her.
"Six." Finn's jaw tightened. "Just as Damien said." He turned to face the others, his eyes burning with the fire of command. "Are you all ready?"
Alcy's grin spread wide, her earlier discomfort forgotten. "Hell yeah, we are."
Finn nodded once, sharply. "Good. Let us go." His spear materialized in his hand, its blade gleaming with anticipation. "Orario relies on us. Let us show them that we are strong—even without the King."
Alcy laughed, hefting her massive sword onto her shoulder. "The God-King, you mean!" She grinned, wild and fierce. "Let us show them!"
"GO!" Finn's voice cracked like a whip. "Split up! Each of you take on one!"
They vanished.
...
Alcy clashed in the air with one of the Monarchs, her massive sword descending like a falling star. He caught it with his claws—the impact sent shockwaves rippling through the sky as the two collided and plummeted to the ground. The earth cratered beneath them, dust and debris exploding outward.
The man rose first, tall and muscular, his form monstrous in its intensity. A wild mane of hair framed his face, and his eyes burned with primal hunger. He grinned, revealing sharpened teeth.
"Oh... a prey, are you?"
Alcy laughed, a wild, fierce sound that echoed across the battlefield. She raised her sword, pointing it directly at his heart. "A prey? HAHAHAHA... You are a fool if you think that." Her grin matched his. "I am Heracles. I am the Hunter."
The Monarch's grin faltered, replaced by a flicker of genuine interest. "A hunter? Is that so?" He cracked his neck, his claws extending further. "You are looking at the King of Beasts... Rakan." His voice dropped, becoming a low growl. "And I hate hunters."
...
Across the plains, a second clash erupted.
A massive sword of shadow and darkness met the Monarch's blade. He stood, his rage palpable, his form rippling with barely contained fury. His eyes blazed with green fire as he beheld his opponent.
"YOU DARE!" Tarnak's voice thundered across the battlefield. "A mere shadow dares to stand before me!"
He raised his arms, his muscles bulging, his skin hardening into iron. "I am Tarnak, Monarch of the Iron Body, King of Monstrous Humanoids! HOW DARE A MERE SHADOW STAND TO FACE ME!" His voice rose to a howl. "SHOW ME YOUR MONARCH!"
Igris did not respond. He simply raised his greatsword, pointing it at the raging Monarch. His crimson cape billowed in the wind, his form unwavering.
Tarnak's rage intensified. "I see how it is... Fine." His body began to glow with metallic sheen, his muscles hardening to steel. "You will die first!"
...
Northward, a third figure descended from the sky.
He floated on a cloud of icy fog, his form wreathed in frost, his eyes cold and calculating. His path toward Orario was interrupted by a spear—a single, perfectly aimed throw that nearly pierced his heart.
He caught it, his fingers closing around the shaft, and descended to the ground. His landing was silent, his feet barely touching the earth.
"Hmm..." He studied the spear, then the man who had thrown it. "Perhaps the people of this world are not as inferior as I had thought."
He tossed the spear aside and fixed his gaze on Finn. "Tell me, young one... where is the Shadow Monarch?"
Finn caught his spear mid-air, spinning it with practiced ease. "The God-King is busy." His smile was sharp, cold. "Far too busy to face off against mere ice elves."
Sillad's eyes narrowed. A frosty laugh escaped his lips. "A provocation... I see. Fine." He raised his hands, ice forming around his fingers. "This Monarch of Frost shall engage you. I will freeze every part of your body except your mouth....so you can tell me where the Shadow Monarch is." His smile turned cruel. "Then you die."
...
Further south, a giant walked.
His footsteps left craters in the earth, each step a small earthquake. His head rose above the treeline, his beard thick and wild, his eyes ancient and knowing. He was a mountain made flesh, a force of nature given form.
He stopped when a figure landed on his shoulder.
Ottar drove his greatsword toward the giant's neck. The Monarch raised his hand, catching the blade with his palm. The impact sent shockwaves rippling through the air, but the giant did not flinch.
He looked down at the small warrior on his shoulder, his voice a low rumble. "You... be mine. Join me. Help the Giants conquer the world." His hand closed around Ottar's blade. "I will grant you powers beyond reason. A new beginning. A gift from me...the Monarch of the Beginning."
Ottar's grip tightened on his sword. His voice was flat, unyielding. "No. My heart belongs to only one. And she is with the Shadow Monarch." He pulled his blade free, landing on the ground before the giant. "I serve only him. Forever."
Legia smiled...a slow, ancient smile. "I Understand...Loyalty is a thing...Death it is then"
...
Above them all, a swarm descended.
Millions of insects...flies, mosquitoes, beetles, things with no name...darkened the sky. They moved as one, a living storm of chitin and hunger. Ais raised her hand, and wind answered. A massive gust erupted from her palm, scattering the swarm, forcing them to the ground.
They reformed into a woman...beautiful, deceptively fragile, her form shimmering with an ethereal glow. Her smile was serene, but her eyes held the hunger of a predator.
"Who dares?" she asked, her voice soft as silk.
Ais descended, her two green wind wings flaring behind her. She landed gracefully, her sword Desperate already drawn.
Querehsha tilted her head, studying the young woman before her. "You are a beautiful one. I wonder how much of that beauty will be left after my babies eat your skin." Her smile widened. "In the name of Querehsha, Queen of Insects."
....
In the forest, an old man walked.
His cane tapped against the earth with each step, his movements slow and deliberate. His gray hair was thin, his eyes light red, and a red blob-like symbol pulsed on his torso. He seemed frail, ancient, on the verge of collapse.
He stopped when he saw the figure sitting before him.
Vritra sat on a fallen log, her gaze fixed on the canopy above, her expression contemplative. She did not look at him.
"Oho..." The old man chuckled. "A rare sight. A dragon." He leaned on his cane, studying her. "A strong one at that. Do you belong to the Shadow?"
Vritra rose slowly, turning to face him. "Yes. As a matter of fact, I do." Her golden eyes met his red ones. "And as a gift for my master, I plan to bring him your head."
Yogumunt laughed...a dry, rasping sound. "I see. Interesting." He straightened, his frail form seeming to grow taller, more imposing. "Unfortunately for you, of all the ones you had to face... it is me." His red eyes gleamed with ancient malice. "The one capable of killing hundreds of dragons. The one the Dragon King himself appointed as his right hand man."
