Jason opened his eyes.
The flame was gone. The pillars, the skulls, the endless burning ground—all of it had vanished, as if it had never existed. He stood on solid ground now, something real beneath his feet, and for the first time in what felt like years, his mind was quiet.
No Frenzied whispers. No Sukuna lurking in the corners of his consciousness, waiting for him to stumble. Just silence. Just him.
He had done it.
He looked down at his hands, flexed his fingers, felt the power coiled beneath his skin. Not Sukuna's power. Not Death's power. Not the Frenzied Flame as it had been given to him. Something new. Something his. He had melted them all together, burned away the boundaries between them, and forged something that had never existed before.
It could not alter reality.
Instead
It could burn it.
"Empty Hand," Jason muttered.
"Oh? My oh my." Lucifer's voice cut through the silence, warm and amused. "Looks like someone's excited."
Jason turned. Lucifer stood a few feet away, his hands in his pockets, his smile wide and approving. He looked like a proud father watching his son take first steps...if that son had just learned how to set existence on fire.
"But let's not get ahead of ourselves here, okay, kid?" Lucifer held up a hand. "First thing's first. Testing your powers. Getting used to them." His smile widened. "To do that, I prepared another opponent."
Jason's eyes narrowed. "What? Another being you're throwing my way?"
"No, no." Lucifer waved a hand dismissively. "This being is not someone I conjured. Not from a different reality." He stepped closer, placing his hand on Jason's shoulder. "This is a demon. One that challenges your claim to the throne of Hell."
He snapped his fingers.
A small circular gateway opened in the air in front of them.....no more than a few feet across, its edges crackling with dark energy. Through it, Jason could see a place he recognized instantly. Red skies. Black mountains. The oppressive weight of a dimension that existed only to serve one being.
"Azarath," Jason said.
Lucifer nodded. "Indeed." He gestured at the gateway. "Now come on. He's waiting."
"Trigon," Jason said, already walking forward.
"Say his full title." Lucifer's voice followed him. "You're about to face the interdimensional demon Trigon. One of the strongest beings of this world. No concept of death affects him. No true physical body to harm aside from his demonic form." A pause. "A step above normal demon lords." Another pause. "And today, he dies. At your hands."
Jason stopped at the edge of the gateway. He looked back at Lucifer.
"You know." He grinned. "I did want to revisit this bastard for Raven's sake." He turned back to the gateway. "Thanks for the chance, I guess."
He jumped.
The gateway swallowed him.
Trigon felt him before he saw him.
The presence was wrong—familiar, but changed. He had sensed this human before, in the halls of Hell, in the moments before his foolish daughter had tried to defy him. But that presence had been borrowed. Stolen. Power that belonged to someone else, wielded by a mortal who had no right to it.
This was different.
This presence was owned.
"You." Trigon's voice rolled across the dimension like thunder, shaking the black mountains, cracking the red sky. "I remember you."
"Good." Jason's voice carried across the burning realm as flames coiled around his hands, yellow light flickering across his face. His eyes shifted—from their natural color to that sickly gold, the mark of the Frenzied Flame. "It's good that you remember me."
Trigon's massive form loomed against the red sky, his four eyes burning with ancient fury.
"Last time, I had to escape. Run." Jason's hands clenched into fists. "Because of you." He raised his head, meeting those four burning eyes without flinching. "Today, I've come back to end you."
"I see." Trigon's voice rumbled across the dimension, shaking the black mountains. "One victory in Hell, and he dares challenge me?" He leaned closer, his face filling Jason's view. "Oh, I have heard about you, Jason Anderson. New King of Hell." His lips curled back from his teeth. "But you seem to think I am on the level of those pathetic demons of your realm." His voice dropped, became something darker. "I am not. I AM an Old God." The ground shook beneath his words. "Trigon the Merciless!"
Fire gathered between his horns...a beam of plasma, bright and terrible, aimed directly at the human who floated before him.
Jason grinned.
The beam shot forward. Jason extended his hands. The Frenzied Flame in his palms reached out, wrapped around Trigon's attack, and devoured it. Consumed it. Eradicated it like it had never existed.
"I'm sorry," Jason said, still grinning, "did you think fire was your ally?"
He raised his hands. Hundreds of slashes erupted from his fingers—not Dimensional Cleaves, not ordinary cuts, but Soul Slashes, each one aimed at the demon's massive form. They struck Trigon's chest, his arms, his face, cutting away pieces of his literal soul. The demon staggered backward, black ichor spraying from a dozen wounds.
"YOU DARE!"
Trigon's eyes and hands blazed with fire. Four massive hell blasts erupted from his body, converging on Jason in a wave of destruction that should have erased anything it touched.
Jason didn't dodge.
His entire body became the Frenzied Flame. He swam through Trigon's fire like a fish through water, unharmed, unbothered, until he popped out directly in front of the demon's face. He raised his hands and blasted Trigon point-blank with concentrated Frenzy.
The fire burned the skin on Trigon's face. The demon knelt, crying out in pain.
"AHHHHH!"
He clutched at his melting face, black blood running between his fingers. Jason floated above him, looking down.
"I'm not done." Jason's voice was cold. "You deserve worse."
He raised his hands. His body transformed...not just his eyes, not just his hands, but his entire form. His head shifted, becoming exactly what his Frenzied self had been: a mass of yellowish-orange flame, with a darker black flame burning at its core.
"Unendurable Frenzy."
Hundreds of sparks erupted from his head....not like fire, like lightning. Bolts of maddening chaos shot across the sky, each one aimed at the kneeling demon below. They struck Trigon's body, his mind, his very concept of existence. The kind of fire that could make even gods lose their will.
Trigon screamed.
"AHHHHHHHH! AHHHHHHH!"
He clutched his head, his body convulsing, his ancient mind unraveling under the assault. The Old God who had terrorized universes, who had never known defeat, who had claimed to be beyond death itself—he knelt in the dirt and screamed like a wounded animal.
Jason stopped.
He raised his hand. Above Trigon, the massive Ankh of Death materialized—black and absolute, pulsing with the weight of destinies that had finally run out.
"Destined Death."
The Ankh fell.
The Frenzied Flame had already done its work—burning away Trigon's laws of existence, vaporizing his immortality, stripping away everything that had made him untouchable. The Destined Death had only to deliver the final blow.
It struck.
Trigon went still.
The Old God knelt in the dirt, his face a ruin of melted flesh and black blood, his body already beginning to dissolve. The being that Jason couldn't have imagined fighting at some point in his life was now kneeling in front of him.
Dead.
After suffering agonizing pain.
Of madness.
Jason's body returned to normal. The Frenzied eyes faded, their yellow glow receding until only their natural color remained. His chest heaved. His hands trembled.
"I am in control," he muttered. "I am in control."
He said it again, quieter, until his breathing steadied.
A clap sounded behind him.
Jason turned. Lucifer floated there, his hands coming together in slow, deliberate applause, his smile wide and genuine.
"Beautiful." Lucifer's voice was warm, approving. "Beautiful." He lowered his hands. "Now you are fully ready. Truly." He nodded once. "The successor of Lucifer Morningstar."
He floated closer.
"Back to your world now." His smile sharpened. "Oh. Did I mention that someone declared war on your planet?"
Jason's eyes went wide. "What!?"
Lucifer grinned and snapped his fingers.
The world vanished.
