Chapter 7 - Remnants

A bright light from a large monitor shone onto Damian's face. A pensive look rested on his face. His hands lay on the desk and his chair looked a bit worn out but still holding strong. There was a creak and Damian whipped his head around to see Isaac drinking a glass of milk. He beckoned him over and Isaac sighed, clearly tired but knew better than to argue with him. Damian pointed at the screen and asked,

"What do you think that is?" A video of the outside of a convenience store with almost nothing going on was playing. Isaac squinted and waited for something to happen yet nothing did. He was about to protest when he saw it. It was quick but clear, there was a flash of orange light and then the screen went dark. He asked Damian to play it again and this time paid attention. The video played again. Isaac then asked Damian to go frame by frame.

"There, stop!" Isaac pointed to a dark, blurry smidge on the screen. He leaned closer to get a better look. "Is there a way to make the image clearer." Damian's fingers moved across the keyboard with a speed and precision Isaac couldn't hope to follow but the image was still too blurry for him to identify anything. "I don't know what this is but I'm going to bed, it's like 3am."

"It's 12:30 and no, you are not going to sleep yet," Damian told Isaac. Isaac's shoulders slumped and he muttered a few curses under his breath. Damian clenched his teeth and stood. The room's temperature dropped and a second later, a hand suddenly closed around Isaac's throat and slammed him against the wall. Damian's eyes widened before letting go. Isaac began to curl up into a ball and crawled into the corner. Damian tried to move closer to comfort him but Isaac flinched and moved away. He took a breath and said, "Hey, I'm sorry, it's been a really long day and I'm a bit worked up. Maybe you were right and we should go to bed." Isaac slowly poked his head out and nodded meekly. Damian sighed in relief and held out his hand. Isaac waited a few moments before ultimately deciding to take it and he stood up before he was forcefully pulled into a hug. "I really am sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you." Isaac said nothing...

The light from the window had finally shone into her eyes and she knew that her rest had come to an end. Lydia sat up and gasped. Peter was sat in front of her and pounced. She covered her eyes awaiting the pain sure to come and yet she felt nothing. She peeked between her fingers and he had disappeared.

"Great now you're hallucinating" she muttered to herself. She calmed her nerves and got up to get ready. She stepped into the bathroom and undressed, turning the tap until it was scalding hot then standing underneath the shower. It had only been a couple weeks since she had received the information that she was a supernatural death alarm but school doesn't wait for the Morrigan. She turned off the tap and dried herself off then wrapped the towel around her covering her from her chest to her knees. Lydia took a look at her reflection in the mirror. It had a crack in it. She took some time admiring herself, smiling at it as if she was practicing and left the shower. As she did, she was met with a younger man's face.

"Stiles, what are you doing here?"

"Umm,uhh... I'm.. here to drive you to school like we agreed yesterday." he responded. She tilted her head and nodded. She gestured toward the door but Stiles seemed enchanted.

"I need to change Stiles." He nodded and hummed in agreement. "Wait outside the door." He looked at her and then shook his head and left. Her lips curved slightly as he left. She put on some leggings, a blouse with flowers on it and a black cardigan. She had brown suede boots on, a silver bracelet and almost put on a necklace that had J+L engraved on it. Her fingers hovered over it and then whispers began to overwhelm her. Her hands shot up to her ears and she fell to her knees and screamed. Her door swung open and Stiles rushed in there and pulled her into his arms. Tears starting flowing down her face. Stiles began rocking her, saying.

"Shh, it's okay. We'll figure this out." Stiles rubbed her back as she finally got her bearings. The sounds had stopped but she could still feel her head pounding as she sobbed into Stiles' chest. He felt solid and she needed something to hold on to. He was always there to catch her when she was falling. They both got up at the same time. He wiped her eyes and they left together in unison. On the floor was the necklace snapped in two.

Winds shook the trees. The sun was blocked by the clouds. Two men stood opposite each other. Peter Hale smirked at the man in front of him. The pale man smirked right back at him.

"Shouldn't you be at school." The two chuckled at Peter's words.

"Shouldn't you be dead." Damian replied. A smile was given in response. They began to circle each other, both of them awaiting a mistake. "I mean you are quite the disappointment Peter Hale. I heard you had killed the woman that destroyed the great Hale family leaving only 3 of them surviving. Now you just seem like a puppy."

"You should be careful, even puppies can give you a nasty bite."

"Maybe, maybe not. Regardless if I deem it necessary I will put you down... for good this time."

"Well, at least you've stop pretending to be a cute little high school kid but you're still not truly honest." A smirk was plastered onto Peter's face. "After all, you don't really care for the 'high school experience', do you parasite?" Damian clenched his teeth. They stood there for a while attempting to gauge each other's reactions.

"Why would I ever tell you? A creature so self-absorbed that he'd kill his own sister for his pitiful revenge."

"You should stop your whole 'I care about people' routine. It doesn't suit you." Peter took the first step towards his enemy. Damian continued towards Peter as well. Initially they took slow, deliberate steps which morphed into them jogging then finally they ran into each other trading blows. Blows landed on Peter far more often than they did on Damian. Swiftly, Peter grabbed onto Damian and threw him into a nearby tree. "Come on, I thought I was the puppy. Show me how you'll 'put me down' or was that all talk" The vampire stood up, hissed with his eyes flashing black and red, before diving in and tackling Peter and holding him down. Thrashing, Peter tried to get free but Damian's grip was far too strong and Peter realised that writhing around wasn't going to do him any good and calmed down.

"Disappointing. You've had weeks to recover and you are still so weak." Damian's head shook as he said those words. Silence. "Really, you seemed so talkative. Remember that while you may be a horrible person, I am the monster that men fear." Smiling, Peter moved right beside Damian's ear,

"You were quite the little monster to young Isaac last night, weren't you?" Damian's face dropped. His expression was impossible to read. His fist was raised above Peter's head and once it lowered all Peter could see was black.

The school day was almost the regular except for Damian not being there at least in the morning. Stiles, Lydia, Scott and Allison all sat around a table that was in the corner of the cafeteria. Isaac sat on his own for the first few minutes but then migrated to their table as well. There was an awkward silence for a while.

"So where's Mr Dracula?" Lydia asked. Isaac stared at the redhead for a while before shrugging. "I would have thought you'd know after all you are always joined at the hip." Isaac flinched but just shrugged again. Stiles looked up and waved towards the door. The entire table swivelled their heads to find the missing person. With a strut, Damian made his way to the table and sat down opposite Isaac giving him a small smile. The smile is not reciprocated.

"So how are we doing?" Damian asked.

"We're doing fine but where the hell were you?" Stiles urged.

"Met with a little puppy, wasn't very cooperative." Damian smiled. The group turned to look at each other confused. "A joke, werewolves, dogs, puppies. Nevermind. I just couldn't be asked to go to school today but felt bored so I came in." Stiles nodded but kept his eyes on Damian. Fidgeting, Isaac started to eat his food. A frown plastered on Damian's face now. "I do have to say though, Jackson's been quiet recently. Well, the Kanima has at least."

"Well, we've actually uncovered something in the bestiary. The Kanima seeks a master." Scott said holding Allison's hand.

"So someone else is pulling the strings." Stiles said

"Yeah, only problem is who" Scott answered.

"Who indeed." Eyebrows narrowed, Damian began eating his meal whilst talking amongst the unruly group he had found himself mixed up in. "There's something you should all see. Come by Stiles' house and I'll show you after school." Isaac looked at Damian with confusion but as their eyes met, Isaac averted his own.
