The passage narrowed the farther Ethan went.

Not by much. Just enough that he had to angle his shoulders and keep one hand on the wall for balance. The stone felt warmer here, almost like it was holding heat instead of bleeding it away.

His boots crunched softly over gravel.

Crunch

Crunch.

Then nothing.

He stopped.

The sound didn't come back when he took another step.

No echoes

No scrape.

Just silence.

"That's not normal," he whispered.

The Dungeon always answered noise with noise. Even dead floors had echoes. This place swallowed sound instead.

Ethan slid his dagger free and held it low, blade angled backward along his forearm the way he'd learned after getting cut too many times the stupid way.

He moved again.

The light thinned until it barely existed, not dark, just… dim. Like the world had decided brightness was unnecessary.

That feeling from before crawled up his spine.

He didn't look behind him.

He didn't need to.

He could feel it.

Something was moving.

Not fast.

Not loud.

Just steady.

A scrape.

A breath that wasn't his.

Ethan pressed himself against the wall and waited.

Seconds passed.

Then a shadow slid across the floor in front of him.

Long. Wrong. Not shaped like any monster he knew.

He didn't attack.

He didn't run.

He held still, muscles locked, heart pounding so hard it felt like it might betray him.

The shadow stopped.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then the floor ahead shifted.

Stone flexed.

Not cracked—**flexed**.

Ethan's stomach dropped.

"Yeah… that's not good," he murmured.

A low sound rolled through the tunnel. Not a roar. Not a growl.

A deep, slow vibration, like something enormous breathing through the Dungeon itself.

Dust drifted down from the ceiling.

Ethan backed up one careful step.

The vibration stopped.

So did everything else.

The silence after was worse.

He realized he was sweating again, even though the air felt cold.

His instinct screamed at him.

**Not yet. Not here.**

He forced his legs to move.

Slow. Quiet. Back the way he came.

Half a step at a time.

The shadow moved again.

Closer.

Ethan turned and ran.

Not blindly—controlled, fast, staying low, staying balanced. The tunnel seemed longer than before, the air heavier, like it didn't want him leaving.

A stone behind him shattered.

He didn't look.

He jumped a crack in the floor, slid around a corner, and didn't stop until he burst back into the broken stair chamber from before.

He collapsed behind a fallen platform, chest heaving.

The vibration followed him.

Not close.

But present.

Whatever it was…

It had noticed him.

Ethan wiped blood from his nose and laughed quietly, the sound shaking.

"Great," he said. "Just what I needed."

He looked up toward the faint light above Babel's path.

"I'm coming," he whispered. "Just… don't die before I get there."

Behind him, far down

the tunnel, the Dungeon breathed again.

And this time—

It sounded hungry.
