Chapter 10 - The Syndicate of Five

The reinforced deadbolt clicked securely into place as the five survivors stepped into the darkened biology laboratory.

"Basecamp established in Biology Lab 201," the First Player said, setting his supply pack on the central demonstration desk.

"Nobody enters this room without my direct clearance!"

"This lab has thick security blinds and reinforced window frames," Kendra noted, wiping dust from her granite forearms.

"We can rest here without exposing our silhouettes to the courtyard."

"And the biological storage cabinets provide plenty of glass vials and chemicals," Emilia added, checking the supply shelves.

"We can prepare extra chemical pastes if we need more acid for the spears."

"I have two extra jars of glycerin paste ready on the counter," Vasa pointed out, organizing the reagent bottles.

"We can replenish our acid coatings after every major engagement."

The dark-haired youth unpacked several sealed water bottles and vacuum-packed dried meat rations, distributing them evenly among the squad.

"Eat and replenish your stamina reserves," he instructed them, taking a swig of cold water.

"We have a major boss raid in three hours!"

"Real purified water and dried beef!" Vasa exclaimed with genuine relief, biting into the ration pack.

"I thought we would be drinking out of broken sinks all week!"

"I don't let my squad fight on an empty stomach," the youth replied with a slight smirk.

"Proper nutrition keeps your reaction speeds sharp in prolonged dungeon combat."

"What is our plan for the clocktower?" Emilia asked, carefully organizing their harvested monster cores on the counter.

"Let's look at the campus blueprints first."

Vasa unrolled a detailed architectural blueprint of the high school campus across the smooth black countertop.

"The Central Clocktower rises five stories above the main administrative building," the frost mage explained, pointing at the diagram.

"The lower three floors are flooded with standard Gobdog nests!"

"And the upper observatory houses the gate commander," the First Player added, leaning over the blueprint.

"The stairs are narrow, which means we can force the horde into a controlled choke point!"

"We need a dedicated weapon for our melee striker before we breach that tower," he noted, looking toward the workshop corner.

"I can craft something lethal in five minutes," the dark-haired girl said, walking over to the bench vise with a thick industrial cutter blade.

She ground the double edges against an electric grinding wheel, throwing bright orange sparks across the floor.

"How does this look for close-quarters butchery?" she asked, wrapping the tang tightly in black paracord.

"That blade will shear clean through monster bone!" the First Player approved, nodding at the razor edge.

"Let's coat the tip with some of my leftover corrosive acid paste," he suggested, applying a thin layer of the bubbling green chemical.

"Now your blade has both piercing and acid dissolution damage!"

"Now that makes it a true weapon of mass destruction," she said, admiring the shimmering green edge.

"I can sever monster neck joints with a single diagonal slash!"

"Now let's formalize the party contract."

He activated his First Player Authority, projecting four glowing blue contractual prompts before each of the four girls.

[ System Contract: First Citadel Strike Team Formation ]

[ Leader: Nox (First Player) | Members: Yeda, Kendra, Vasa, Emilia ]

[ Party Benefits: Synchronized Tactical Radar | Shared Experience Distribution (+15%) | Vitality HUD Sharing ]

"A formal party interface?" the striker whispered in fascination, touching the floating prompt with her fingertips.

"Accept the prompt to link our status feeds!" the First Player instructed.

"Linking feeds right now!" Vasa shouted, tapping the glowing screen.

"Confirmed on my screen too!" Kendra called out, pressing the icon.

"Party contract accepted!" Emilia confirmed with a bright smile.

All four girls tapped the confirmation icon simultaneously, and glowing blue sigils flashed brightly above their chests.

A sudden flood of shared combat experience surged into his interface as the system finalized the team registration.

[ Party Synergy Bonus Calculated: +120 EXP Shared ]

[ Total Experience Reached: 300/300 ]

[ Congratulations! You have achieved Level 4! ]

[ Stat Points Awarded: 5 Free Attribute Points (Banked: 5 Unallocated) ]

[ New Active Skill Unlocked: Shadow Stride (Rank F)! ]

"Level 4 reached!" the First Player whispered, feeling a surge of spatial energy integrate into his nervous system.

[ Skill Acquired: Shadow Stride (Rank F) | Cost: 20 Mana | Instantly dash up to 10 meters through spatial folds. ]

"A short-range spatial dash... incredible!" he murmured, admiring the dark purple runes swirling around his ankles.

"That gives me instant battlefield repositioning."

He checked his current allocated attribute totals on the status screen with deliberate focus and satisfaction.

[ Current Status: Nox | Level: 4 (EXP: 0/400) ]

[ Strength: 18 | Agility: 16 | Endurance: 15 | Perception: 11 ]

[ Unallocated Banked Points: 5 ]

"I will bank these five stat points for emergency allocation during the boss fight," he decided after reviewing the numbers.

"Kendra holds the frontline with Body Hardening!" he outlined, assigning combat roles across the team.

"I will absorb charging momentum and draw aggro!" the defensive fighter agreed, pounding her granite fists together.

"My skin becomes dense as solid rock when I channel mana into my forearms!"

"Vasa provides crowd control and creates slippery terrain with Ice Shaping," the youth continued.

"I will freeze their joints and blind their breathing vents!" the frost mage confirmed with enthusiasm.

"Extreme cold makes their chitin brittle and easy to shatter!"

"Emilia tangles the flanks with thorned creeper vines," he added, looking at the plant user.

"I will keep them rooted to the floorboards!" the plant user promised with a confident nod.

"My thorn vines can anchor three adult hounds simultaneously!"

"Yeda acts as secondary striker to sever tendons, while I execute targets with Shadow Stride and Fatal Strike!"

"A clean meat-grinder formation," the striker said, sliding her new paracord blade into a leather sheath.

"I am giving each of you one of my chemical flash grenades," the First Player said, distributing the remaining canisters.

"If you get overwhelmed by pack numbers, pull the friction cord and close your eyes!"

"These will blind an entire corridor in seconds," Vasa noted, strapping the jar to her belt.

"And keep your extra bandages in your vest pockets," Kendra added, checking her utility straps.

"Let's get some fresh air on the rooftop while the others rest," the striker suggested, nodding toward the emergency ladder.

"Keep watch on the corridor while we are upstairs!" the youth instructed the squad before following the striker up the ladder.

The cool night air washed over them as they pushed open the roof hatch and stepped onto the gravel landing.

Above them, the sky churned with deep violet fractures, two glowing Merged moons casting an eerie silver glow across the ruined skyline.

"Look at the city out there..." the dark-haired girl whispered, resting both forearms against the parapet.

"Half the skyscrapers downtown are split in half!"

"The old world is completely dead," the youth answered, leaning beside her against the cool stone ledge.

"Do you miss anything from before the Merge?" she asked, glancing sideways at his calm profile.

"Not a single thing," he replied with a quiet, dry chuckle.

"My life before today was enduring school bullies and waiting for meaningless exams."

"Sounds familiar..." she said with a soft smirk, showing a faint scar across her left knuckle.

"In my neighborhood, if you didn't fight back, people took everything you owned!"

"That is why you didn't hesitate when those beasts attacked," he noted, admiring her unyielding spirit.

"Weakness is an invitation to be devoured," she answered, turning her dark eyes directly into his.

"I like the way you operate, Nox... you don't make excuses and you don't beg!"

"Begging gets you killed in a dungeon," he replied, his lips curving into a confident smile.

"We are going to take that clocktower, and then we are going to claim this entire campus!"

"A sovereign kingdom in the middle of an apocalypse?" she asked, her eyes glittering with excitement.

"Why settle for anything less?"

"I am holding you to that promise!" she whispered, leaning closer until her shoulder brushed against his Kevlar vest.

The physical closeness was electric, filled with mutual respect, ruthless ambition, and the unspoken bond of two predators.

"We will build something unbreakable right here," he promised, looking down into her fierce eyes.

"A fortified citadel where nobody dictates terms to us."

"I am counting on you to watch my back, First Marshal," he added with a grin.

"Always," she answered softly, her hand lightly resting over his fingers on the parapet.

"Nobody is going to stand in our way."

"We will crush the commander and take the core!"

"Look at that clocktower roof... the runes are flaring brighter," she noted, pointing across the courtyard.

"The mana concentration is reaching critical density."

"We should make sure all our gear is prepped before the chimes ring," the First Player said, checking his ammunition pouch.

"Twenty rounds of 9mm hollow-points ready to fire."

"And five determined killers ready to clear the tower," she answered with a fierce laugh.

"We have everything we need to win."

Suddenly, the clocktower bell high above the school tolled three reverberating chimes that shook the night air.

"Midnight... the hour has arrived!" the First Player said, his gaze locking onto the glowing runes at the tower peak.

"The boss hunt begins right now!"

"Let's go wake the team and slaughter that commander!" she shouted, drawing her paracord blade with a fierce smile.

"Time to paint the clocktower in monster blood!"

"Move out, strike team!" the First Player commanded, descending the ladder back into the laboratory.

"To the central stairwell!" the squad echoed in unified determination.

"Let's purge this dungeon and take what belongs to us!"
