Halfway back, Amir dropped off 32 and Obi-Wan so they could go retrieve the Traveler where it had been left near the Tusken camp, then returned to Mos Pelgo with the others.
Only when they were getting close did Amir remember something and make Big Yellow slow down.
A krayt dragon suddenly appearing at the edge of town would be a shock to the townspeople too.
Very soon, Big Yellow came to a stop outside Mos Pelgo.
Amir jumped down with Millisyn.
"Too late..." Amir muttered. There was not a single person left in sight in town. They had all fled back inside after seeing the krayt dragon.
Only one young man came running out from behind the houses.
"Wove?!"
"It's me, Hans." Wove jumped down as well and introduced him to Amir. "This is Hans, the one helping me set up the farm."
"What is going on here?" Hans stared at the enormous creature lying on the sand, unable to hide his shock.
"It's a long story, but the problem's solved now," Wove said with a grin.
Excitement spread across Hans's face. "Really? You really did it? I knew trusting you was the right call!"
"It was Amir," Wove said with a laugh. "Go call everyone out. Our town's going to be safe from now on."
At that moment, Amir and Millisyn were treating Big Yellow's wounds with the bacta spray they had brought from the Traveler. The fight had not been easy for it either. Many parts of its flesh had been torn open, and some of its bones were slightly out of place.
But krayt dragons possessed extremely strong healing abilities to begin with. After stopping the bleeding and treating the wounds, Big Yellow no longer seemed to feel much pain. The injuries were already scabbing over and regenerating at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Amir intended to take it back near Obi-Wan's hut. There was a decently sized cave close to the place where he usually parked the Traveler, and Big Yellow could stay there for the time being.
Until Amir finished giving it its "compulsory education," he could not let it go.
There was still a bomb in its stomach right now, and it did not dare resist. If he let it leave, once the immediate threat of death disappeared, the mental link that had just formed between them would soon fade.
At that point, it would slowly revert to what it used to be.
Amir intended to give it a much deeper education first.
Before long, everyone in town had gathered around.
Once they understood that the krayt dragon would not attack, curiosity started to overcome fear, and they began sizing it up.
Quite a few townspeople still had a dark anger in their eyes. Some of them looked like they wanted to walk right up and empty a full blaster pack into Big Yellow.
Amir noticed, but did not react.
What had been done before could only be made up for afterward.
No matter how hard it was to accept, time would wear the sharpest edge off it.
The only real comfort now was that the outcome had been a good one.
In front of the gathered townspeople, Wove explained the plan, then told them that neither the krayt dragon nor the nearby Tusken tribe should threaten them anymore. Only then did the townspeople finally smile from the heart.
The pressure they had lived under for so long had been immense. Life was already hard enough on this poor and barren land. Beyond the Empire's oppression, they had also had to live with the constant threat of wild beasts and raiders.
Now, finally, things had improved.
At the very least, they would not have to go out every day with fear in their throats.
A crowd of people warmly invited Amir to stay and celebrate, but he refused.
This matter was finished. Wove had finally settled down. But Amir still had a huge project waiting for him.
Big Yellow's classes needed to begin immediately.
During the next few days while it recovered from its injuries, Amir would also need to go out and get it fresh meat to replenish its energy.
Taming a creature like this was still a real challenge for him. Unlike Yunling, who was gentle and close to people by nature, smoothing down this beast's violent temperament and gradually turning it friendly was something far more interesting.
Millisyn had already volunteered enthusiastically to be the assistant teacher.
After taking on enough water from the town and saying goodbye to everyone, Amir urged the krayt dragon onward for the long journey.
Mos Pelgo was not exactly close to Mos Eisley.
On the way there, they had had the Traveler. On the way back, they did not.
Living off the nutrient paste they had brought, the two of them traveled for more than a full day before Amir finally recognized the terrain ahead.
Along the way, Amir took in all sorts of scenery—desert, mountains, oases—everything carrying a distinct Tatooine flavor. BD-4 did not stop taking pictures the entire time.
Halfway through the journey, Amir spotted a herd of Banthas, so he and Big Yellow hunted together. After Big Yellow had eaten its fill, Amir and Millisyn even experienced roasting meat over the sand for the first time.
The greater krayt dragon moved very fast, so when they finally reached their destination, it was just around noon.
Amir found it a cave in the valley where it could recover, then walked back to the Traveler.
The trip really had been a long one, and the dryness and heat along the way had been punishing.
Only after taking a shower did his body finally feel human again.
Then, sprawled bonelessly across the Traveler's soft sofa, each with a popsicle in hand and taking huge bites, Amir felt like he had truly come back to life.
Over the next several days, Amir kept moving back and forth between Big Yellow and the Traveler. During the day, he would sometimes go out hunting wild creatures, and throughout the process he constantly used the Force to reshape Big Yellow's thinking, passing along new ideas and new ways of understanding the world.
Amir dared say that Big Yellow could already be called a philosopher-sage among krayt dragons.
If krayt dragons kept histories, it would surely deserve a chapter written in thick, dramatic ink.
Something like: "The milestone that led krayt dragon civilization forward; the greatest thinker; the pioneer of interspecies harmony; and so on."
At this rate, in another few years Big Yellow might start writing on its own.
These ancient lifeforms did possess a certain level of intelligence. It was just that their environment had never given them the chance to learn. And even if they had had the chance, no one could have taught them in as direct and efficient a way as Amir was now.
He had, without question, opened a door for it.
Not enough to make it think like a normal human, of course, but enough to help it restrain the impulses of raw instinct and establish a basic way of thinking.
For several weeks straight, Amir spent part of each day communicating with Big Yellow, and the bond between the boy and the dragon grew steadily closer.
"Amir, are we going riding with Big Yellow again today?" Millisyn asked one morning, shaking him awake.
Ever since she had fallen in love with riding a dragon, she no longer hated Tatooine's sand all that much.
"You already know how to communicate with it now," Amir said. "You can take it out hunting or just wandering around on your own."
In less than a month, Big Yellow's temperament had stabilized. At the very least, it had grown very fond of Millisyn, Obi-Wan, and 32 as well.
There was no longer any need to worry about letting Millisyn interact with it on her own.
Amir had already taught Millisyn how to communicate emotions with animals. It was not as direct as the method he had developed himself, where he could send thoughts and images straight into a target's head, but simple interaction was still possible.
At that, Millisyn ran off, picked up a helmet, and left the Traveler.
The helmet had a built-in temperature regulation function. At Millisyn's emphatic request, Amir had made one for her.
Combined with the cooling fan he had added to the smart combat pack, she could now go outside without really feeling the heat at all.
After getting up, Amir tidied himself up and then headed into the workshop.
