Chapter 168 - Chapter 169: The Failure of the Plan

The next day, Amir brought Obi-Wan, Millisyn, 32, and BD-4—practically the whole family—back to Mos Pelgo.

After picking up Wove and the translator, the group headed for the Tusken camp.

These figures wrapped head to toe in black cloth were already fully prepared. Even the air seemed to carry a tragic sense of resolve.

Life always had a stubborn, unyielding side.

No matter how small, it still dared to raise a blade against an overwhelming giant it could never truly defeat.

A line of Banthas moved across the ridges of the desert beneath the twin rising suns, their shadows cast at their feet, wavering and burning in the heat.

Amir rode the Bantha at the front, discussing the plan with the tribe's chieftain beside him.

Chaihoun translated in real time from the back.

At this point, there was actually little left to discuss. They had brought several Banthas' worth of explosives and every harpoon launcher they had. All that remained was to reach the entrance to the krayt dragon's lair.

The dragon-hunting party marched in force to the place they had visited the day before. This time, they did not stop to observe from afar—they entered directly into the heart of it.

According to the Tusken Raiders' observations, the krayt dragon had been remaining asleep during these past days, which meant they could safely approach without disturbing it.

Before the cave mouth lay a broad valley, surrounded by dunes and peaks piled with stone.

The massive harpoon launchers were set neatly in place around the area. Amir raised a hand toward the group behind them, signaling them to fall back.

The plan did not require too many people. The goal was to make the krayt dragon swallow the Bantha, so all they needed was someone to guide the Bantha to the mouth of the cave, plus those who would control the harpoon launchers to enrage and restrain the dragon—making sure it would not ignore the Bantha, burrow underground to escape, or charge the people in the rear.

Once most of them had retreated to the rocky high ground, only Amir and a dozen or so Tuskens, including the chieftain, remained in the field.

Chaihoun, unexpectedly, had not fallen back either. Instead, he stood beside Amir with a battered blaster rifle in his hands.

"You should go back. We don't need you translating anymore," Amir urged.

"No, no. Slaying a dragon has always been this old man's dream. Even if I die here today, it'll be worth it!"

Amir did not argue with his choice. He simply stepped forward, placing himself in front of him.

One Tusken Raider led a Bantha packed with explosives toward the cave mouth.

That tiny figure advanced beneath the blazing sun toward the massive Sarlacc pit that had become the krayt's lair, grim and solitary, and everyone's heart tightened.

With a krayt dragon's keen senses, the approaching footsteps alone were enough to wake it. Such an act was no different from a challenge.

Second by second, under the eyes of all present, time passed. The empty valley was as quiet as a graveyard. The only sensation was the sting of sweat, evaporating almost as soon as it formed.

At some point, no one knew exactly when, the sand beneath their feet began to tremble. Grains of sand started hopping, sliding up around their ankles.

"Wah-oh woo-wah-ha!" the chieftain roared, raising his gaderffii stick in his right hand. More than a dozen of his tribesmen shouted with him.

They were further provoking the dragon that was coming.

The Tusken Raider standing at the cave mouth had already been terrified out of his mind. He dropped the Bantha and ran for his life, but the harder he struggled, the deeper his legs sank into the sand.

He kept glancing back at the cave mouth, howling, praying that the beast would not appear.

But it was already too late.

A dark shape rushed from the depths of the cave toward the entrance, growing larger and larger in his pupils.

The krayt dragon had been enraged. Any creature that disturbed its rest would be torn apart.

On this stretch of sand, it was the absolute king.

A massive brown head emerged into view. It opened its jaws, revealing dense rows of sharp fangs.

The Tusken Raider, still trapped at the cave entrance, struggled even more frantically. At last he tore free from the sand and tried to run back toward his people—but the black shadow had already swallowed the ground beneath him.

Amir frowned.

Only now, seeing it up close, did he truly grasp how powerful this greater krayt dragon was.

Its immense body embodied raw, primal force to perfection. Its scales were covered in ancient patterns. Its rough, powerful horns spoke of sanctity and majesty.

At first sight, Amir was awestruck.

Only nature could create something like this. Only hundreds of millions of years of change and shaping could refine every scale and every strand of muscle into something so beautiful and harmonious.

Life looked up at the stars and created art, never realizing that life itself was the greatest art of all.

Amir stepped forward and thrust out his right hand in a hard pull. The Tusken Raider who was about to be swallowed suddenly lurched forward as if jerked by an invisible force—but that short distance was enough to separate life from death.

Its bite came down on empty air.

The krayt dragon threw back its head and roared toward the sky. As it opened its jaws, green venom sprayed upward. Several Tuskens standing at the harpoon launchers were hit, their clothes instantly corroding open to expose blood-red skin. They rolled on the ground in agony.

Fortunately, the liquid was more like stomach acid—extremely corrosive, but not especially poisonous.

Thwip! Thwip! Thwip!

At last, the prepared harpoon launchers fired.

Eight long, sharp spears shot out under the immense power of the launchers, their tips sinking directly into the krayt dragon's scales. Behind each spear trailed a heavy chain—these were the Tusken Raiders' tools for hunting gigantic beasts.

Under the pain, the krayt dragon thrashed violently. The chains pulled taut under its monstrous strength.

Amir stared fixedly at the giant beast. The struggling krayt snapped and bit in every direction, but stubbornly refused to eat the Bantha loaded with explosives right in front of it. The situation was rapidly spiraling out of control.

Behind them, Millisyn showed not the slightest fear. Instead, she excitedly clutched BD-4 and snapped pictures nonstop, recording everything in the field, while Obi-Wan and 32 stood like two guardians beside her, protecting her firmly.

Chaihoun raised his old blaster, and together with more than a hundred Tuskens on the high ground behind, opened fire on the krayt dragon's head.

The krayt dragon went even more berserk.

Crack! Crack!

The chains suddenly snapped.

As though it knew exactly who was responsible, the krayt dragon ignored the bait at its mouth and lunged straight at the dozen or so Tusken Raiders in the field.

With a single bite, along with a mouthful of sand, it swallowed one Tusken Raider who had fallen on the ground.

Amir drew his blaster.

He could not keep watching.

The original plan had already failed. The krayt dragon had not swallowed the Bantha packed with explosives at the first opportunity.

And that made Amir realize how reckless this operation had been.

More people were not an advantage.

If they had sent only one or two people to bring the Bantha to the cave mouth, lured the krayt dragon into eating it, and detonated it from a distance, the whole plan would have been far safer. So many people would never have been placed in danger.

The Tusken Raiders' beliefs had led his thinking in the wrong direction.

These people were far too obsessed with participating in the hunt. Most of the tribe longed for the honor of slaying a dragon with their own hands.

Many of them were already decades old and still had not completed their coming-of-age rite, so their stubbornness was understandable.

Amir too had assumed the krayt dragon would definitely devour the prey at the mouth of the cave first, and so he had not treated the risk with enough seriousness.
