Chapter 24: Sure Enough, Real Logic Has Nothing to Do With Conan's World
"When it comes to a sasaeng fan like this, I'd say just go straight to the police."
Conan said lazily.
A full day of classes—elementary school classes, no less—had left him utterly drained, on the verge of collapse.
Here he had the mind of a seventeen-year-old high schooler, and yet he spent all day reciting multiplication tables or the abcdefg alphabet—it was enough to make him want to cough up blood.
"But if I go to the police, I'm worried the media will find out."
"And then—"
Yoko's brows knit together, looking utterly pitiful.
"And then all kinds of rumors and gossip will fly, right?"
"Don't worry, Yoko-san—I'll be the one protecting your future!"
Kogoro stood up, thumping his chest, righteous as could be.
"A case like this, leaving it to Uncle here to handle will definitely be faster than going to the police."
Makoto chimed in, agreeing.
After all, the moment anyone mentioned calling the police, Inspector Megure's dopey face floated up in his mind.
Honestly, Kogoro was more reliable than that.
"Mm-hm, my dad is amazing."
"Just yesterday he cracked a kidnapping case demanding a 1,000,000,000 yen ransom for President Tani and rescued his daughter."
Ran quickly added.
Naturally, when it came to her own family's agency, the more cases they landed, the better.
Clearly, Makoto's first instinct had also been to think of the Mouri family first.
As for this little brat...
Ran shot him an irritated glare.
He really had no idea how things worked!
"Then I'll be counting on you!"
Yoko bowed her head, her figure on full display.
"Don't you worry, leave it all to me!"
Kogoro's eyes had glazed right over, and he hurried to promise it with everything he had.
◇◇◇
Central Tokyo, in front of a luxury apartment building in Roppongi.
A black Mercedes S500 and a red Ferrari 812 pulled up out front, one after the other.
The doors opened, and a whole crowd of people climbed out!
Okino Yoko, Yamagishi Eiichi, Kogoro, Ran, Edogawa Conan, and Makoto himself.
"Maybe I should buy an SUV too."
Looking at six people and only two cars, Makoto felt a bit helpless.
No matter which case it was, in the world of Detective Conan, the main cast always moved around in one big pack.
A two-seater sports car really wasn't practical at all—there was just no way to fit everyone.
"Whoa, so this is where Okino Yoko lives?"
"No wonder she's such a big-name idol, living in a place this fancy!"
Kogoro stared up at the luxury building, practically drooling with envy.
"Keep your voice down, don't let anyone find out!"
Yamagishi hurried to remind him.
Once the group had walked into the building, Makoto glanced back.
Just as he'd thought!
The trunk of the black Mercedes popped open, and three bizarre little elementary schoolers crawled out of it.
Dumpling-headed Kojima Genta, freckle-faced Tsuburaya Mitsuhiko, and the lively, adorable Yoshida Ayumi.
"This is seriously… absolutely incredible!"
Makoto sighed, at a loss for words.
Sure enough, real logic clearly had nothing to do with Conan's world.
A single Mercedes trunk had somehow fit three elementary schoolers inside.
And with a build like Kojima Genta's alone, even the trunk of a Mercedes G-Wagon probably couldn't hold him!
"Makoto, what's wrong?"
Ran asked, curious.
"Nothing. Let's just get in the elevator."
Makoto smiled and did his best to ignore the nonsense of it all.
At the same time, he opened the System and tapped [Check In].
[Ding! Congratulations, Host, on a successful Check-In at the Roppongi luxury apartment! Reward: an 800-square-meter top-floor duplex mansion!]
An 800-square-meter duplex mansion?
That's a little stingy!
Makoto looked up the property prices on his phone—1,700,000 yen per square meter, roughly equivalent to 100,000 back home.
800 square meters came out to 80,000,000, which was about 1,350,000,000 yen.
Not bad. Passable, at least!
Ding!
The elevator doors opened.
Yoko smoothly pulled out her key and unlocked the door.
And then, right on cue, came a piercing scream!
"Yoko, what's wrong?"
Manager Yamagishi hurried forward—and let out a scream of his own.
"Ah!"
The three little brats crowded in for a look.
The next second, they were shrieking too, stumbling backward onto their butts.
"W-what on earth happened?"
Ran's face had gone slightly pale with panic.
"I'm here. It's okay."
Makoto gently wrapped an arm around her shoulders, comforting her softly.
"Makoto—"
Ran looked up at his face, tenderness washing over her until her whole body went soft.
"That's..."
"Move out of the way!"
Conan, focused solely on the case, shot forward in a single bound.
He didn't even notice Makoto making his move behind him.
"Click!"
The lights switched on.
The dim room instantly flooded with light.
A heavyset young man lay on the floor, deep red blood pooling beneath him.
Eyes wide open, expression frozen—he was clearly dead.
"An ambulance!"
"Quick, someone call an ambulance!"
Kogoro shouted urgently.
Conan, meanwhile, reached out and checked the man's neck with practiced ease.
The skin was already cold. He shook his head, resigned.
"No need. He's already dead."
"We should just call the police first."
Dead?
A total stranger, suddenly dead in a famous idol's home?
What on earth was going on?
Everyone present wore looks of pure shock.
The three clueless kids were shaking all over from fright.
And yet, at the same time, they were dying of curiosity, itching for another look at the body.
