The gentle, rhythmic sound of ocean waves crashing against jagged, ancient cliffs echoed through the salt-heavy air.
As Li-Wen and Xiao-Yue descended the winding, pine-scented mountain trail toward the southeastern coastline, the vast, shimmering expanse of the Azure Ocean unfolded before them. The afternoon sun cast a brilliant blanket of liquid gold over the deep blue waters, painting the coastal mist in hues of amber, orange, and soft violet.
After weeks of continuous travel through quiet, forgotten roads, the stark change in scenery was a welcome sight for the small girl.
Xiao-Yue skipped merrily along the narrow gravel path, her small sandals making light clicking sounds against the smooth slate stones. Her pink lotus lantern hung loosely from her left hand, its ruby flame burning with a soft, content warmth that reflected the peaceful state of her soul. In her right hand, she held a small, polished seashell that Li-Wen had picked up for her at a quiet fishing hamlet earlier that morning.
"Look, Brother Li-Wen!" Xiao-Yue squealed softly, holding the shell up to the sunlight so its inner mother-of-pearl coating caught the light. "It looks like the lotus mark on my neck! It has pink and gold lines all over it!"
Li-Wen maintained his calm, steady pace beside her. His heavy traveler's coat brushed against the tall coastal grass, the dark fabric rustling gently in the sea breeze. His expression was as quiet and unreadable as ever, but his dark, indifferent eyes softened slightly as he looked down at her excited face.
"The ocean harbors many things that resemble the ancient lotus," Li-Wen replied softly, his voice a low, comforting murmur against the roar of the surf below. "In ancient times, before empires drew borders upon the earth, the Primordial Lotus Clan lived near the deep waters. The currents still remember their presence."
Xiao-Yue's eyes widened with innocent wonder. She clutched the seashell tightly against her chest and looked up at him, her small brow furrowing in thought. "Did my real mother and father live here too?"
The question hung in the air, carried away gently by the salty wind.
Li-Wen did not answer immediately. He stopped at a small bend in the path that overlooked a sweeping bay. Far below, dozens of small wooden fishing boats bobbed peacefully on the water, their white sails catching the coastal wind.
"They lived far to the North, where the ocean freezes into mountains of blue glass," Li-Wen said, his gaze drifting toward the northern horizon. "Your parents were noble guardians of the lotus lineage. When the greed of the southern sects threatened to destroy your bloodline, they gave everything to ensure you survived."
Xiao-Yue looked down at her small, clean dress, then back at the pink lantern in her hand. A fleeting touch of sadness crossed her bright eyes, but it was quickly replaced by a warm, trusting smile as she wrapped her small fingers around Li-Wen's broad index finger.
"I don't remember their faces," she murmured softly, leaning her head against his side. "But as long as I am with Brother Li-Wen, I'm not scared anymore. You are my home now."
Li-Wen felt a faint, subtle vibration inside his chest—a sensation entirely foreign to a man whose soul had been forged in the absolute, void-like zero of the Northern Abyss. He did not speak, but his fingers gently tightened around her small hand, offering an unspoken, unbreakable promise of protection.
As the sun began its slow descent below the horizon, casting long, crimson shadows across the coastline, the terrain began to change drastically.
The pleasant, sandy beaches and gentle pine trails gave way to steep, razor-sharp crags of dark volcanic granite. High above the roaring tide stood the Sea-Mist Crags—a sprawling, ominous mountain ridge that jutted out into the ocean like the spine of a sleeping, ancient sea dragon.
A dense, unnatural fog perpetually blanketed the higher cliffs of the crags. Unlike normal ocean mist, this fog was heavy, cold, and carried a faint, bitter scent of stagnant spiritual energy. It hung suspended in the air, barely moving even when strong coastal winds blew against the mountain faces.
At the base of the main trail leading up into the crags sat a lone, weather-beaten tea house constructed from dark driftwood and bamboo. A faded linen banner displaying the character for 'Rest' fluttered weakly above the entrance.
Li-Wen stopped outside the tea house.
His sharp, instinctive senses—honed through centuries of surviving the deadliest environments in the continent—instantly picked up on subtle anomalies. The surrounding woods were far too quiet. The seagulls that usually circled the coastal cliffs were nowhere to be seen. The ambient spiritual Qi of the area was strangely stagnant, as if an invisible, microscopic net were slowly settling over the entire mountain range.
The rumor spoke of the Primordial Dew-Lotus Stone hidden within the submerged sea-caves... Li-Wen thought, his eyes narrowing slightly as he scanned the misty peaks above. A relic capable of permanently stabilizing her bloodline and erasing all lingering soul curses.
He knew the rumor was far too convenient. The timing of its emergence, right after the fall of the Crimson Dragon Dynasty, bore the faint, calculating signature of a masterfully laid trap.
Yet, as he looked down at Xiao-Yue, whose small face still carried the faint, underlying fatigue of years of bloodline suppression, Li-Wen's decision remained absolute. Whether it was a genuine ancient relic or a lethal trap set by the combined forces of the continent's highest sects, it made no difference to him.
If the stone was real, he would take it for her.
If it was a trap, he would freeze the trap and everyone behind it into dust.
"We will rest here for a short moment before ascending the crags," Li-Wen said, ushering Xiao-Yue toward the tea house.
"Okay, Brother Li-Wen!" Xiao-Yue replied cheerfully, dusting off her skirt.
The interior of the driftwood tea house was dimly lit by a few flickering oil lamps suspended from the low ceiling rafters.
Sitting at three separate wooden tables were a dozen travelers. To an ordinary mortal, they appeared to be nothing more than wandering merchants, tired mercenary guards, and elderly scholars seeking shelter from the rising sea mist.
However, the moment Li-Wen stepped through the doorway with Xiao-Yue, an invisible, razor-sharp tension instantly filled the room.
The 'merchants' sipping their tea did not look at the newcomers directly, but their knuckles whitened slightly as they held their porcelain cups. The 'elderly scholar' reading a yellowed scroll subtly shifted his feet into a defensive stance. Beneath their coarse, ordinary robes, hidden mridian channels pulsed with suppressed, high-grade spiritual Qi—all carefully concealed behind specialized concealment talismans.
Li-Wen led Xiao-Yue to a small table near the open window overlooking the ocean. He pulled out a wooden chair for her, taking his seat opposite her.
An old waiter with a stooped back and a nervous, twitching smile hurried over to their table, wiping his hands on a greasy apron.
"Welcome, honored travelers... welcome," the old man stammered, his voice trembling slightly as he felt the faint, unexplainable chill radiating from Li-Wen's dark coat. "The sea mist is rising fast tonight... very dangerous on the upper crags. What... what can I get for you?"
"A pot of warm sweet-tea and some steamed rice cakes for the child," Li-Wen said, his voice flat and calm. He placed a small silver ingot on the weathered table.
"R-Right away, my lord! Right away!" the old man squeaked, grabbing the silver and hastily retreating toward the kitchen.
Xiao-Yue rested her elbows on the table, holding her face in her hands as she looked out the window at the swirling white fog outside. "Brother Li-Wen, the mist looks like big white clouds that fell down from the sky."
"It is not ordinary mist," Li-Wen said quietly, his eyes fixated on the tea cup placed on the table.
At a neighboring table, three men dressed as mercenary guards exchanged subtle, coded eye glances. One of them, a scarred man with a hidden Stage-4 cultivation base, slowly reached beneath his cloak toward a small, black jade transmitter tablet.
Target has entered the Sea-Mist perimeter, the scarred man transmitted silently through his spiritual consciousness, sending the message toward the hidden command hub high up on the mountain. He is accompanied by the lotus child. No signs of suspicion. Proceeding according to Plan Alpha.
High above the tea house, deep within a hidden, cavernous sanctuary concealed behind the thick sea mist of the main cliff, four figures stood around a glowing, crimson projection mirror.
The projection mirror clearly displayed Li-Wen and Xiao-Yue sitting inside the tea house below.
Standing at the center of the chamber was Grand Elder Blood-Vane of the Blood-Fiend Alliance—a terrifying Stage-5 High-Grade Sovereign whose skin was as pale as marble and whose eyes burned with a sickly, blood-red light. Surrounding him were three other Stage-5 experts from the continent's most feared hidden sects: Master Void-Walker of the Phantom-Blade Guild, Matriarch Poison-Lotos of the Thousand-Venom Sect, and Elder Iron-Mountain of the Celestial Shard Sect.
"He actually came..." Matriarch Poison-Lotos cackled, her voice sounding like dry leaves scraping together. She leaned heavily on her serpent staff, her withered face twisting into a hideous, triumphant grin. "The fool actually fell for the rumor of the Primordial Dew-Lotus Stone! He truly thinks he can find a cure for that little girl!"
"Do not celebrate prematurely, Matriarch," Master Void-Walker hissed, his figure flickering erratically like a shadow cast by a dying candle. "You saw the battle records from the Crimson Dragon Dynasty. He defeated Prime Ancestor Zhao-Khai and shattered the Nine-Sun Spear with his bare fingers. His cold aura is unlike anything recorded in the ancient texts."
"Hmph! That was because Zhao-Khai was arrogant and fought him on open ground!" Grand Elder Blood-Vane sneered coldly, his long, razor-sharp fingernails digging into the stone edge of the projection mirror. " Zhao-Khai relied on standard solar fire. But our Nine-Abyss Spatial Sealing Array is completely different!"
He turned his blood-red eyes toward a massive, dark-purple crystal hovering above the cavern floor. The crystal pulsed with an ominous, void-compressing energy, casting strange, distorted shadows across the stone walls.
"This sealing array was forged using the shattered spatial core of a ancient void beast," Blood-Vane explained, his voice filled with murderous pride. "The moment he steps onto the upper cliff path, the array will activate. It will compress the surrounding three miles of space into an absolute, airtight box. The natural spiritual Qi of the heavens will be completely cut off! He will not be able to draw energy from his surroundings, nor will he be able to use spatial movement techniques to escape!"
"And what about his cold aura?" Elder Iron-Mountain asked, his voice booming like rolling thunder inside the cave. "If he releases that absolute zero wave again, even a compressed spatial box might be shattered from the inside!"
"That is where the second layer of the trap comes in," Blood-Vane chuckled darkly, a sickening, lethal light gleaming in his eyes. "We have deployed three hundred elite Stage-4 elders along the narrow cliff pass. Their sole purpose is not to defeat him, but to keep him fully occupied! They will attack him relentlessly from all directions, forcing him to expend his energy defending the little girl!"
He pointed his long finger toward the shadow behind the central crystal, where a tall, gaunt figure stood completely merged with the darkness.
"And while he is distracted by the endless waves of attackers..." Blood-Vane whispered, his voice dropping into a terrifying hiss, "...Ancestor Shadow-Void will activate the Void-Piercing Needle. Crafted from absolute spatial obsidian, it can bypass all physical armor and aura barriers, striking directly from the blind spot of the spatial fold!"
The gaunt figure in the shadow raised a long, pitch-black needle that shimmered with dark, spatial tearing runes. The needle emitted no spiritual fluctuation, no sound, and no thermal signature—it was an ultimate assassination weapon designed specifically to kill Stage-5 Peak Sovereigns!
"He will not even realize he has been struck until his dantian is pierced and his core energy begins to bleed out," Ancestor Shadow-Void whispered, his voice flat and emotionless. "And once the Northern Sovereign is crippled... the lotus child will be ours."
The four dark masters chuckled softly, their sinister laughter echoing through the hidden cavern as the blood-red array on the floor pulsed with increasing, lethal power.
Down at the tea house, the old waiter returned with a steaming wooden tray, placing a small pot of sweet-tea and a plate of warm, soft rice cakes in front of Xiao-Yue.
"Here... here you go, little miss," the old man said hurriedly, avoiding eye contact with Li-Wen as he quickly retreated back to the kitchen.
Xiao-Yue's eyes lit up as she saw the fluffy, white rice cakes dusted with sweet sesame powder. She picked one up with her small fingers, blew gently on it to cool it down, and held it out across the table toward Li-Wen.
"Here, Brother Li-Wen! Take the first bite!" she said, her smile bright and completely innocent.
Li-Wen looked at the rice cake in her hand, then down at her eager, glowing eyes. He reached out and took a small bite. The taste was sweet, soft, and warm.
"Is it good?" she asked happily.
"It is good," Li-Wen replied softly.
Xiao-Yue giggled delightedly and began eating her own rice cake, her small feet swinging under the wooden chair.
Li-Wen slowly poured a cup of tea for himself. As the steam rose from the porcelain cup, his dark eyes glanced subtly toward the ceiling rafters, then toward the narrow window overlooking the misty mountain trail above.
His acute spiritual perception had already detected the subtle, invisible threads of spatial energy locking onto the tea house from the high cliffs. He could feel the artificial compression of the surrounding space, the hidden array formations buried beneath the volcanic rock, and the hundreds of suppressed, bloodthirsty killing intents lurking within the thick sea mist above.
He knew that the moment they stepped out of this tea house, they would be walking directly into a meticulously engineered execution ground.
Yet, Li-Wen's face remained completely calm, undisturbed as an ancient, frozen glacier that had stood through millions of winters.
He took a slow sip of the warm tea, looking across the table at the little girl who was happily munching on her rice cake, her pink lotus lantern casting a warm, protective ruby halo around her small seat.
They have assembled hundreds of experts... forged ancient spatial arrays... and prepared lethal needles from the void... Li-Wen thought quietly, his dark eyes reflecting the cold, distant moonlight outside.
He set his tea cup down on the wooden table with a soft, quiet CLINK.
They built a cage of mist and iron to trap a monster...
...but they forgot that when the ocean freezes, the cage breaks first.
Li-Wen reached out and gently patted Xiao-Yue's head as she finished her second rice cake.
"Finish your tea, Xiao-Yue," Li-Wen said calmly, standing up from his chair and adjusting his dark traveler's coat. "The mist is thick tonight. We have a long mountain walk ahead of us."
"Okay, Brother Li-Wen!" Xiao-Yue wiped her mouth with her sleeve, grabbed her pink lotus lantern tightly, and took his hand.
Together, the solitary Northern Sovereign and the small girl stepped out of the warm tea house, crossing the threshold and entering the dark, mist-shrouded mountain paths of the Sea-Mist Crags, where the deadly storm prepared to break.
See you in next chapter....
