Chapter 144 - Chapter 143: The Oasis in the Mist and the Original Firebending

"Huh?"

Hearing that he was supposed to directly control flames, Aang instantly lost confidence again. He looked left and right nervously.

"I remember Master Jeong Jeong had me start by practicing horse stance and burning leaves. How about we—"

"What are you worried about?" Kahn chuckled.

"It's just the two of us here. Do you really think your clumsy Firebending—which hasn't even reached the basic beginner level—can hurt me?"

Hearing that, Aang couldn't help recalling the scene of Kahn easily defeating Azula and her sisters that night.

The moment he remembered how even someone as strong as Azula was completely overwhelmed by him, his anxious heart calmed a little.

"You're right. I'll try."

Aang swallowed hard, carefully took hold of the flame, and then asked, lost and uncertain.

"What should I do next?"

Seeing Aang panicking, Kahn let out a helpless sigh. Then, suddenly, his tone snapped sharply:

"Attention!

Left turn!

Gather energy!

Punch!"

The commands were so sudden and forceful that Aang's body reacted instinctively.

Before he even realized it, the gathered energy had already transformed the tiny flame into a blazing inferno.

As he threw the punch, it erupted into a massive fireball roaring toward Kahn.

"No—!! Uh…"

Aang cried out in panic, but his voice abruptly stopped—almost as if his throat had been grabbed.

Kahn simply waved his hand.

The "terrifying fireball" that seemed impossibly dangerous to Aang instantly burst apart like a popped bubble.

The flames scattered harmlessly into the air, and the next moment, the world was calm again.

"I told you—flames can't hurt me."

Watching Kahn standing there without a scratch, completely unaffected, Aang was now fully convinced.

"I finally learned Firebending!!!"

Aang shouted in pure excitement, holding a stable ball of flame in his palm.

After overcoming his mental block and building confidence, Aang quickly grasped how to control fire under Kahn's guidance.

He could finally control it.

"Congratulations, congratulations," Kahn said lightly, then kindly reminded him.

"But remember—you've only learned to bend fire. You haven't learned Firebending. More precisely, you're at the level of a three-year-old child."

"I know. I'll study hard from now on."

Aang extinguished the flame and bowed respectfully.

"I'll be in your care from now on, Master Kahn."

Kahn smiled.

"And I'll be in your care for my Airbending lessons, Master Aang."

"Oh! Right!" Kahn suddenly remembered something.

"Before we continue training, I want to visit a place and find something. It'll also help with your Firebending studies."

Helpful for Firebending?

Aang nodded.

"Of course! As long as it doesn't take too long. Where are we going?"

Kahn smiled and said the name:

"The Oasis in the Mist."

The Oasis in the Mist was a once-famous tourist attraction in the Earth Kingdom, located at the desert's edge.

Its most famous feature was a natural ice spring created by the desert winds and underground water—a natural wonder.

Coincidentally, Aang knew this place very well. A hundred years ago, he visited it and highly praised the purity of the ice spring.

"That was a very pure natural ice spring. I don't usually use the word 'pure'…"

Aang enthusiastically introduced the place during the journey. But when they arrived—

He froze.

The magnificent and vast ice spring he remembered had shrunk into a pitiful little pile of ice that looked seconds from melting.

The once-bustling oasis was now desolate, guarded by only a few people—some of whom looked clearly suspicious.

"Uh… at least a hundred years ago, it was beautiful."

Aang tried to defend himself.

"Oh my goodness, a hundred years ago," Sokka mocked.

Kahn quietly stood to the side, pretending he wasn't there.

He had read about this oasis in an old book from the Fire Nation Royal Library, which was partly why he wanted to come. But clearly, the book was ancient.

Although the oasis was rundown, the fruit juice and iced drinks sold nearby were at least refreshing in the scorching heat.

After cooling off, Sokka finally asked:

"So? Why did we suddenly come here? Don't tell me this is a vacation. Do we even have the time?"

Katara said gently, "What's wrong with an occasional break? Too much stress isn't healthy."

Toph took a huge sip of her juice, casually propping her feet on the table and exposing her dirt-covered soles.

"If I'm taking a vacation, it sure as hell wouldn't be here. I'm an Earthbender—can you sympathize with me a little? This sand is practically cooking my feet!"

She wiggled her toes in frustration.

Just then, Kahn—who had been meditating since they arrived—finally opened his eyes and smiled.

"Relax. Coming to the Oasis in the Mist is just a detour. I'm actually here for a library hidden in this desert—the mysterious Wan Shi Tong Library."

Toph raised a brow.

"A library built in the desert? Are my ears blind too?"

"You heard right," Kahn said.

"It was built by Wan Shi Tong, the Spirit of Knowledge. Since ancient times, he and his fox spirit assistants have collected knowledge from the entire world and stored it there. You could say it's a treasure trove of every piece of knowledge from ancient times to today."

Katara gasped, "There's a spirit like that? That sounds incredible!"

"So there might be information about the Fire Nation there?" Sokka asked, instantly excited.

Toph shrugged, "Doesn't matter to me. Books and I don't really… connect. Unless there's a version blind people can read."

"Maybe someday," Kahn said.

He thought of braille and audio books from his past life, but they didn't exist here yet.

Still, with the Fire Nation's current tech, audio devices might not be too far off.

Aang asked, "Kahn, what exactly are you searching for at the library?"

"An ancient form of Firebending," Kahn answered.

"I don't think I told you yet, but the Firebending practiced in the Fire Nation today isn't the same as the original version…"

He explained how Firebending had been modified for war.

"The warped Firebending is purely for military use. Damn Fire Lord," Sokka cursed.

Aang's eyes lit up.

"I definitely feel more suited to the original Firebending. Let's go find it!"

But Katara asked, "The desert is huge. Do you actually know where the library is?"

"No worries. I already found it using Heavenly Eye Vision while meditating."

Kahn smiled.

"What did you think I was doing?"

Toph shrugged.

"Uh… sleeping?"

"…Right. Anyway, let's set off after a short rest."
