Chapter 121 - Chapter 120: The Second One — An Old Friend

The deafening explosion instantly startled every guard nearby, cutting the battle short.

Kahn's arrival was a top-secret operation for both sides—Kahn's plan, the White Lotus, even the fact that King Bumi was involved, were all things that absolutely could not be exposed.

Before the guards arrived, King Bumi stomped lightly.

The ground trembled.

The ruined training hall—which had been reduced to rubble by their fight—began to shift and reform.

Collapsed stone reassembled, cracked walls knitted themselves back together, and the shattered floor smoothed out as if nothing had ever happened.

In moments, the entire chamber looked brand new.

Kahn silently thought:

This isn't Earthbending. This is divine infrastructure work.

Once the room was restored, Bumi sank Kahn into the earth with a simple gesture, hiding him completely.

Through Heavenly Eye Vision, Kahn watched from underground as Bumi casually dealt with the guards who rushed in, reassuring them with a few words.

The respect they showed him was absolute.

After the guards left, Kahn resurfaced.

Bumi stretched his back and grinned.

"You really are a little lunatic. But then again—only someone as crazy as you would dare bring up a plan that crazy. More importantly, even though you're crazy, you're perfectly rational. That's excellent!"

His praise was unrestrained.

In that short exchange earlier, Bumi had already seen what he needed to see.

That final explosion Kahn created had looked reckless—almost suicidal—but in truth, it had blocked Bumi's incoming attack, counterattacked him, and freed Kahn from the quicksand all at once.

Three results, one move.

It wasn't luck.

It wasn't impulse.

It was calculation.

Bumi stroked his beard with satisfaction.

"Skilled, clever, and crazy—that's my favorite combination!"

"…You flatter me, Senior," Kahn replied, modest but clearly resisting the label.

He refused to accept the word crazy. That was Azula's department, not his.

Definitely not his.

…Probably.

Still, despite the chaos, this battle had been incredibly valuable for him.

It was his first time fighting an Earthbending Master of a completely different style—and not just any Master, but the strongest Earthbender alive.

And even though Bumi had barely used a fraction of his real strength, it had opened Kahn's eyes to the true breadth of Earthbending… and the power of a Grandmaster.

If they weren't pressed for time, he would've asked to stay here and learn properly.

But time was tight.

So instead, Kahn made an early request—an appointment for future training.

Bumi agreed immediately.

"Good! Very good! A youngster who wants to learn—excellent! No problem, no problem. There's plenty of time in the future… assuming I'm still alive then. Hahaha! …Wait, that's not funny."

After that, everything went smoothly.

They rested for a night, and once Bumi finished arranging matters within the city, they set off toward their next destination.

Flying on Nike, Bumi was like a child seeing the world anew.

"I've lived for more than a century, and this is my first time riding a spirit! Truly—live long enough and you'll see everything!"

He touched the feathers, the back, the wings—anything he could reach. Even with all his experience, spirits were rare enough that riding one made him giddy.

Then Bumi suddenly grew quiet.

"You know, this reminds me of an old friend. He loved riding every beast he could get his hands on. If he knew I was riding a spirit right now, he'd turn green with envy."

"Oh?" Kahn asked. "Who was he?"

"A friend from long, long ago. Not sure if he's alive… though with his stubbornness, he's probably not dead. Just hiding."

Bumi's tone held a strange mix of nostalgia and confidence, but also something unsaid.

Kahn sensed he didn't want to dwell on it, so he changed the subject and asked more Earthbending questions instead.

Still, he couldn't help thinking:

If someone King Bumi remembered so fondly was still alive…

That person must be extraordinary.

Their next destination wasn't far—another spot within the Earth Kingdom. Soon, they descended toward an unremarkable village.

But Kahn knew better.

This was a Resistance stronghold.

And the person waiting inside was someone Kahn knew very well—someone he had even fought.

"Senior Jeong Jeong," Kahn said respectfully, "I've come to pick you up."

Jeong Jeong—the former Fire Nation Admiral, one of the only two Firebending Masters in the entire Fire Nation, and an Elder of the White Lotus alongside Iroh.

He still carried that heavy, somber air, as if he bore the troubles of the whole world. Standing beside the cheerful Bumi, the contrast was almost laughable.

Bumi waved at him cheerfully.

"Long time no see, Master Jeong Jeong!"

Jeong Jeong bowed lightly in return.

"Master King Bumi. It has indeed been a long time."

Then he turned to Kahn, eyes sharp and scrutinizing. Their last confrontation had clearly left an impression.

His first words were:

"Show me a full set of Firebending forms."

A test.

Kahn suspected every person he met would give him one at this rate. What would the third do?

Make him take an exam?

Still, he composed himself and performed the complete Firebending basics—solid, stable, controlled. No wasted movement. No arrogance. No hesitation.

Bumi nodded with satisfaction.

Jeong Jeong's gaze softened slightly.

When Kahn finished, Jeong Jeong spoke.

"Good. You have controlled your desires well. You have not let the flame consume your heart."

"In that case… I have no objections."

"Thank you for your guidance, Senior."

Jeong Jeong belonged to what the Fire Nation called the Restraint Faction—Firebenders who believed flame was inherently dangerous, that desire fueled fire and fire fueled desire, creating a cycle that led to madness and ruin.

Their philosophy wasn't popular, and Kahn didn't fully agree with it, but he respected Jeong Jeong for being a man whose actions matched his beliefs.

Bumi, however, wasn't satisfied.

"That's it? You're both Firebenders—don't you want to test his strength?"

Jeong Jeong stiffened slightly, recalling Kahn's terrifying ability to absorb flames.

He replied flatly.

"For him… battles between Firebenders are meaningless."
