Chapter 199 - Stranded Express

On the outskirts of the city, nestled near the edge of the urban sprawl, stood a modest yet elegant building.

On its terrace sat a woman with striking crimson hair. She wore a loose white research coat that did little to conceal the generous curves beneath, ample assets and long, shapely legs that would draw any eye.

She lounged in a pristine white chair, a cup of aromatic coffee in hand. She took small sips, gazing out at the blue sky and calm sea beyond the terrace.

The sky was clear, the clouds layered and soft. Sunlight bathed everything in warmth. The sea lay placid, broken only by the occasional whisper of waves against distant rocks.

But the woman's brow was furrowed. Her golden eyes reflected not peace, but worry.

She was lost in thought.

Then two figures materialized before her.

Her eyes widened in shock. Instinct took over. Her hand darted into her coat pocket and emerged clutching a small cosmetic compact. In an instant, it transformed, unfolding into a compact handgun.

The compact had seemed like an ordinary accessory, but in moments of danger, it became a weapon, a means of survival.

The figures solidified. A young man and woman.

The girl was lovely and lively, like a playful sprite.

But the man, he was breathtaking. Handsome beyond compare. Ethereal. Commanding. The kind of presence that rooted you to the spot.

The woman found herself staring, mesmerized. Her gun hand lowered, unbidden.

"Hey! How long are you gonna stare?!"

The pink-haired girl stepped into her line of sight, blocking the view. The crimson-haired woman blinked, snapping out of her daze.

She saw the girl standing there, hands on her hips, brows furrowed. Then she noticed her own hand the one holding the gun had dropped to her side.

She raised it again. Aimed.

The pink-haired girl flinched. "Whoa! Let's talk this out! No need to wave a gun around!"

The crimson-haired woman didn't lower her weapon. "Who are you? How did you get into my home?"

"I'm March 7th! And this is Yuki!" the girl said quickly. "As for how we got here... uh... we just whoosh, teleported!"

March 7th tried to explain, complete with hand gestures.

The woman frowned. "Teleported?"

She had witnessed their sudden appearance, but teleportation wasn't unheard of. Scientists used teleportation devices to achieve similar effects but those required matching terminals at both origin and destination.

Without a receiving terminal, teleportation was impossible. And her terrace certainly didn't have one.

Confusion flickered across her face.

"Let me handle this," Yuki said gently, stepping forward. March 7th's way of explaining was only making things more complicated.

"Hello, Himeko," he began with a warm smile. "I apologize for the sudden intrusion."

Himeko showed little surprise at hearing her name. As a well-known scientist on this planet, it wasn't unusual for strangers to recognize her.

"You came looking for me?" Her tone softened slightly, and the compact in her hand transformed back into its original form.

Yuki nodded. "That's right."

March 7th gasped, eyes sparkling. "That's so cool! So fun!"

Himeko's lips curved into a faint smile at the pink-haired girl's enthusiasm. "Just a little toy," she said lightly before returning her attention to Yuki.

"So, Mr. Yuki... and little March 7th. What brings you to me?"

Before Yuki could answer, March 7th pouted. "Why am I 'little'?!"

Himeko ignored her protest, her golden eyes fixed on Yuki.

Yuki's smile deepened, and the effect was immediate even Himeko, composed as she was, felt her pulse quicken just slightly. "We're here about the Astral Express."

But the moment the words left his mouth, her pupils contracted sharply. Surprise and wariness flashed across her face.

"Don't be alarmed. I mean no harm." Yuki's voice was calm, reassuring. "If I did... you wouldn't be standing here talking to me."

Himeko's arms crossed beneath her chest, one hand rising to her chin in thought. "That's... a rather unsettling thing to say."

"You don't believe me?" Yuki smiled.

And then,

He vanished.

In the same instant, she felt an arm wrap around her waist from behind. A hand gently lifted a lock of her vibrant red hair, bringing it close just enough for a subtle inhale.

Himeko's heart stopped.

So fast. Too fast. I didn't even register movement before I was already in his grasp.

When realization struck, a chill ran down her spine. If he had meant her harm, she would have been dead before she knew it.

March 7th, watching from the side, felt something strange twist in her chest. "Hey! How long are you two going to stand like that?! Let go!"

Her shout broke the moment.

Himeko suddenly became acutely aware of their position, his arm around her waist, her back nearly against his chest. A faint blush crept onto her cheeks.

Yuki released her gracefully, but before stepping back, he leaned in just enough for his voice to reach her ear alone.

"Rose fragrance. Elegant, noble suits you perfectly."

Then he returned to March 7th's side, a faint smile playing on his lips.

Himeko blinked, momentarily stunned. Rose... he caught that from just a brief brush of my hair?

Her interest in this mysterious, impossibly handsome man deepened. Could it be that they shared similar tastes? Perhaps they had more to talk about than she'd imagined. Maybe... he could even become a kindred spirit.

She pushed the thought aside for now. "Mr. Yuki," she asked, her composure returning, "how do you know about the Astral Express?"

Yuki's smile widened, confident and assured. "There is nothing in this universe or any world that I do not know."

His gaze held hers. "I know you wish to repair the Express and set out to explore the cosmos. I also know you've encountered... certain difficulties in its restoration."

Himeko's breath caught.

"I can help you. I can help you complete the repairs and set you on your journey sooner than you ever imagined."

Her heart raced. The offer was... impossible to refuse.

"Then, Mr. Yuki... shall we continue this conversation somewhere more comfortable?"

She gestured toward the interior of her home toward the elevator that led deep underground.
