The statue of Thye dominates the chamber like a frozen scream.
Micah stands before it, his breath shallow, his hands clasped behind his back. The Hitotsume stares down at him from its pedestal of carved obsidian and jade. A single orb, massive beyond comprehension, occupies nearly two-thirds of the statue's face. The eyelid curves in a perfect arch, rimmed with scales that continue down the cheeks in geometric patterns. A whorl of dense malachite stirs across the ocular ring, alive with an unquiet, tidal friction beneath the tallow-glow. As the wick shivers, that viridian expanse shears the glare into jagged, molten splinters, casting a kaleidoscope of restless embers back into the gloom. The pupil, a vertical slit, narrows and widens as if alive, as if watching.
Beneath that colossal orb, the anatomy organizes into a ruinous, hypnotic symmetry: a mouth bearing the plush, heavy contour of deliberate sculpture, vaulted cheek ridges that drown the hollows beneath in permanent cisterns of gloom, and an unyielding, monolithic nasal spine that descends with aristocratic severity. The face is serene and predatory, compassionate and cruel, beauty and wrongness existing in the same frozen expression. The eye dominates everything, consuming the face around it, making the beauty beneath feel like an afterthought, a decoration for the cosmic gaze above.
The statue's body emerges from a churning pedestal of waves. A mermaid's form, scaled and serpentine, her torso rising from the stone tide with arms outstretched. Her tail winds around the pedestal's base, fins spread like fans of jade and obsidian, each scale carved with geometric precision. She is enormous—her head alone towers thirty feet above the floor, and her tail coils through the chamber's far wall, disappearing into the stone as if she swims through the rock itself. The scale of her dwarfs the giants Micah saw in Mary Geoise; she rivals the sea kings that patrol the Calm Belt. The chamber doesn't contain her so much as she contains the chamber, her presence filling every corner, every shadow.
But it's the eye that holds him. That single, unblinking eye that tracks his every movement, that reflects his own face back at him in fractured pieces.
Water flows from the statue's enormous eye—not a trickle but a steady stream that falls in a silver curtain down her cheek, across her collarbone, and into the basin at her feet. The basin's rim bears the interlocking rings of the Covenant seal, and the water within swirls with unnatural current, spiraling outward from an invisible center. The sound of falling water fills the chamber—a constant, rhythmic pulse that matches his heartbeat.
Soon the world will be ours to rule, Thye whispers, her voice pouring through his skull like warm honey laced with venom. Soon you will wield the power of all the Hitotsume. They will bow to you.
Micah's jaw flexes. Sweat rolls down his temple, past his ear, soaking into the collar of his blood-red waistcoat.
Their will, will be your will.
"Thye," he murmurs, the word barely audible.
You doubt.
"I question."
Questioning is doubt wearing a mask. Remove it.
His hand drifts to his chest, pressing against the fabric where the brand burns beneath. The scar tissue pulses with heat, responding to her presence like a compass needle finding north. The ring around his iris, the mark of the Covenant, tightens.
The Kunaishi Shrine awaits. The first of many locks. When you open it, my power flows into you. You will feel the ocean in your veins. You will command the tides. You will—
A hand lands on his shoulder.
Micah's head snaps around, his muscles coiling for a strike that his brain halts before his body can complete. His expression softens when he recognizes the face hovering at the edge of his vision.
Hao Silvera Shepherd. The violist stands with his head tilted, his deep brown eyes carrying that familiar searching quality—the look of a man who reads people the way other men read sheet music. His silver-white hair falls across his forehead, slightly tousled from the walk through Aethelgard's winding corridors. His viola case, worn with age, hangs from its leather strap across his back.
The statue of Viola looms behind him in the corridor—a smaller monument, but no less detailed. The Shepherd family's patron figure stands in polished marble, a woman with her head thrown back, her hair carved into a cascade of waves that frame an angular, solemn face. Her hands hold a stringed instrument, not quite a violin and not quite a viola, the bow frozen mid-stroke across the strings. Her robes ripple with exaggerated folds, and at her feet, carved vines coil around the pedestal's base, their thorns sharp enough to draw blood. The stone captures her at the moment of surrender to her music, her eyes closed, her lips parted, as if she's about to sing.
"How long have you been standing there?" Micah asks, his voice rough.
"Long enough to call your name five times." Hao's hand remains on his shoulder, warm and steady. "Are you okay?"
Micah blinks. "I've been standing here for five minutes?"
"At least. You weren't responding." Hao's gaze drifts to the statue of Thye, then back to Micah. "You looked... somewhere else."
The weight of the brand presses against Micah's chest. He forces himself to straighten his spine, to school his features into the mask he's perfected over years in Mary Geoise's court.
"I was thinking," he lies.
Hao's expression says he doesn't believe a word of it. But he doesn't push. Instead, he gestures toward the corridor with a tilt of his head.
"They're ready for you."
Micah nods, turning from the statue. The basin's water catches his eye as he passes—the ripples have stopped. The surface sits perfectly still, like polished glass, reflecting nothing.
He follows Hao into the corridor.
