Chapter 56 - Ashen Angel Witness Reports

Report #1– Anonymous Soldier — Azule Sovereign

My name is [REDACTED].

I am a soldier in the Azule Sovereign military.

I have served seven years. I have eight remaining under mandatory minimum service.

I was deployed to Planet Carew during the ongoing conflict and stationed at Fort Lee, under the command of Admiral Benji Grayson.

The Admiral is a terrifying man.

Not because he shouts. Not because he threatens.

Because when he looks at you, it feels as though he is not looking at you—but through you. As if your body is an obstacle between him and something else.

He always looks miserable. Not angry. Not cruel. Just… tired. Like the war disappointed him by continuing to exist.

During the battle, he was unlike anything I have seen before.

His speed was unnatural. I could not follow his movements, even with combat enhancements. One moment he was there—the next, the space he occupied was empty, and the enemy was already falling apart.

I witnessed him dismember an entire enemy squadron in seconds.

There was no hesitation. No excess motion. No emotion.

If I did not know better, I would say he had made a deal with the Devil.

And the most disturbing part is this:

I am certain he was holding back.

I submit this testimony to formally request reassignment to another battalion. I still wish to serve. I still believe in the Sovereign.

But I do not wish to fight under a commander who sees weakness as something to be culled rather than protected.

I believe Admiral Grayson will lead me to my death.

And I do not believe he would remember my name afterward.

Report #2– Anonymous Soldier — Regnum Ignis

[RECORDING BEGINS]

INTERROGATOR: State your name for the record.

My name is [REDACTED].

I am the sole survivor of my squadron from the battle on Planet Carew. I have no memory of the last eighteen days.

INTERROGATOR: Rank and years of service?

Vice-Captain.

Ten years.

INTERROGATOR: You were recovered unconscious near the eastern ridge. No visible injuries beyond exhaustion and neurological shock. Do you recall the engagement?

No. I remember boarding the deployment ship. I remember the pressure change when we entered atmosphere. After that—Nothing.

INTERROGATOR: We recovered footage from your uniform camera. We'd like you to watch it.

…Alright.

INTERROGATOR: Please describe what you're seeing.

It's chaos. Azule Sovereign forces. Zoji units as well. Mixed engagement. I can see runic detonations in the background—imperfect formations, rushed chants. Now I'm charging an Azule soldier. He doesn't see me coming and I…wait. What's happening to them?

INTERROGATOR: Clarify.

As I get closer, he turns around. He doesn't have a face. There's just… darkness.

Not shadow. Not a mask. Just absence.

INTERROGATOR: Can you identify this individual?

No. I can't see his face. The camera won't focus—every time I try to look directly at him, the image distorts. It feels like the footage is avoiding him. Like he's looking right at us.

INTERROGATOR: What happens next?

The image goes dark. Not static. Not interference. It's like the light just… leaves. There's movement in it. I—I don't know what I'm looking at. My eyes won't settle on it. Wait—no…He's there now. Right in front of me. I didn't see him move. Oh gods—he stabbed me! Right through the chest. I can feel it. I can feel it right now—

INTERROGATOR: You are not currently injured.

That's not possible…You're watching this too! You saw it! I got stabbed!

INTERROGATOR: Please calm down. We are trying to help. Now—last question. Based on this footage, do you believe the individual intended to kill you?

…No.

INTERROGATOR: Explain.

If he wanted me dead, I wouldn't be here. There was no hesitation. No struggle. No mistake. He chose not to finish it. This wasn't mercy. It was a warning. I don't know who it was meant for. But the message is clear. Death is coming.
