The great hall had been transformed.
Torches lined the walls, casting shadows across the gathered crowd. Beasts of every shape and size filled the room. Witches in dark robes mingled among themselves.
At the head of the hall sat Khaos on a raised dais, his throne carved from bone. Beside him stood the witch.
Adina walked through the crowd, feeling their gazes on her. She kept her chin high, her steps steady, and took her place at Khaos's right hand.
Khaos smiled at her approvingly. "You look like a true daughter of the Dark Lord tonight."
"Thank you, Father."
Carter stepped forward, raising a goblet. "Tonight," Carter began, his voice loud, "we celebrate. The kingdom of Obsidian lies trembling before us. Their king hides behind walls he thinks will protect him. Their people whisper prayers they think will save them."
