Chapter 644: Café Sonata (1)

~Azure S. POV~

[Unova Region, 3 Days Later, Castelia City – Plaza]

The skyscrapers of Castelia City didn't just touch the clouds; they seemed to puncture the very fabric of the sky, casting long, geometric shadows over the bustling hive of humanity below. The air here was a cocktail of scents: the salty breeze from the harbor, the sweet, yeasty aroma of fresh Casteliacones, and the faint, metallic tang of millions of electronic devices humming in unison.

I leaned against a glass-fronted building, feeling the weight of Pikachu on my left shoulder and the soft, fluffy pressure of my Eevee resting atop my head. Inside my jacket, a Pichu (Mew) shifted comfortably.

A voice echoed in my mind: 'This city is too loud.'

It was Zorua, walking invisibly beside me, his telepathy tinged with its usual trickster's smirk. He continued, 'Too many thoughts. Everyone is thinking about money, coffee, or how late they are for a meeting. Not enough people thinking about where the next prank is coming from.'

I chuckled softly, adjusting my cap. And I replied aloud, "That's just Castelia for you, buddy. It's the heart of Unova's ambition."

It had been 3 days since the whirlwind arrival of the Blueberry Academy Elite Four and Nemona. Training with Roxie, Crispin, Amarys, and the battle-crazed Nemona had been… intense. My muscles still ached from the sheer velocity of Nemona's tactical drills, and I'm pretty sure Roxie's bass guitar chords were still vibrating in my bone marrow.

But today was the reprieve.

Tomorrow, Black and I would face Burgh at the Gym.

Today was for relaxing.

"Azure! Over here!"

I turned to see White waving frantically. She was standing outside the 'Castelia Massage Co.,' a sleek, high-end establishment that looked more like a five-star hotel than a Pokémon spa. Beside her stood Black, looking slightly bewildered, holding his Tepig, Tep.

White chirped, her eyes gleaming with the predatory spark of a true businesswoman, "The photoshoot is about to start! Azure, I need your Minccino. She's the perfect foil for the Tepig twins. We're selling 'The Polished and the Powerful' aesthetic!"

I smiled, reaching for Minccino's Poké Ball. I replied happily, "A business opportunity, huh? She's always up for a bit of grooming."

*Pop*

Minccino appeared in a burst of sparkles, immediately beginning to brush her tail with her paws. She chirped, her eyes widening at the sight of the luxurious massage parlor, "Minc-cin! (Free massage! YES!!)"

She looked at White with an approving nod, as if to say, Finally, a workplace that meets my standards. White commanded, ushering us inside, "Alright, let's get to work."

[Unova Region, Castelia City – Massage Co.]

The interior of the Massage Company was a sanctuary of zen. Soft, instrumental music played over hidden speakers—pling-plong-zither-strum—and the air smelled of Revive-scented incense and Oran Berry extracts.

The photoshoot was a whirlwind of activity.

Minccino was a natural. She stood between White's Tepig, Gigi, and Black's Tepig, Tep. While the two Fire-types looked adorable and rugged, Minccino added an air of sophisticated elegance, her fur shimmering under the studio lights.

One of the lighting technicians whispered, a group of girls huddling nearby, "Oh my gosh, look at them! The Minccino is so poised! But those Tepig… they're the ones from the BW Agency commercials, right? They're so famous!"

Another added, gesturing to Tepig, "The one on the left looks so brave!"

Black stood off to the side, crossing his arms and looking a bit out of place. He muttered under his breath, "I didn't think training for a Gym involved... modeling."

I said casually, leaning against a pillar, "Everything is training, Black. Patience, poise, and following directions. It all translates to the battlefield."

Rotom suddenly chirped, its face appearing on the screen of my Arc Phone, "And it pays the bills-zzt! White's financial projections are up by 45%! Efficiency-zzt!"

From the darkness of my shadow, a pair of glowing red eyes appeared. Gengar poked her head out, her long purple tongue lolling out in a mischievous grin. She said excitedly, "Geeee-he-he! I should jump into the shot. Imagine the advertisement: 'Massage so good, even a Ghost stays for it!'"

Zorua warned telepathically at Gengar, 'Don't you dare! You'll ruin the lighting. And the girls will scream.'

A few hours later, the director called a wrap. White walked over to us, looking like she'd just won the Pokémon League. She was clutching a tablet, scrolling through the results. She exclaimed, her voice bubbling with excitement, "It's a massive success! The Massage Company is thrilled. With this gig alone, Black, you've worked off half of your debt to the BW Agency!"

Black blinked, his mouth dropping open. He asked in a surprised tone, "Half? Just for standing there?"

White corrected, "For looking good while standing there!"

She handed us both a pair of Casteliacones—the legendary local treat. As I licked the creamy, swirl-topped ice cream, the cold sweetness cut through the humidity of the afternoon. White said, her tone softening, "Black… I've decided something. I'm going to support your dream. I'll cover your expenses for the League—the hotels, the food, the items. In return, I want you to keep working for me, and when you make it to the Pokémon League, you wear the BW Agency logo on your uniform."

Black's eyes lit up with a fire that usually only appeared during battles. He asked, surprised by her offer, "Are you serious? You'd do that?"

White smiled. She said happily, "Consider it a long-term investment."

Black didn't hesitate. He stuck out his hand and said happily, "Deal! I'm gonna make that logo famous!"

White laughed and turned to the Pokémon. She said thankfully, "And thank you, Tep. You were such a professional—"

She stopped. Tep, who had been happily munching on a piece of a cone, suddenly froze. His body began to jitter, small sparks of embers escaping his snout.

*Vrrr-vrrr-vrrr*

White gasped, stepping back. She asked, alarmed, "Wait, what's happening? Is he sick? Did the massage oil react with his fur?"

Black's expression shifted from confusion to awe. His lips formed into a grin, answering, "No... White, look."

I stepped forward, a smile tugging at my lips. And then said bluntly, "He's not sick, White. He's evolving."

Earlier that morning, I'd had a quiet conversation with White about the potential for Black's team to grow. I'd seen the way Tep looked at my more evolved Pokémon—the hunger for strength. I'd pitched her some ideas on how to market an evolved Fire-type, knowing it was only a matter of time. The room was suddenly filled with a blinding, prismatic light!

*Whoosh*

The small, pig-like silhouette expanded. Its legs grew sturdier, its torso thickened, and a dark, vest-like pattern of fur formed over its chest. When the light faded, a Pignite stood where Tep had been, snorting a plume of smoke as it flexed its newly muscular arms.

Black cheered, lunging forward to embrace his partner. He exclaimed proudly, "Pignite! You did it, buddy! You look amazing!"

White, however, looked like she'd seen a ghost. She gripped her tablet tightly as she muttered, "Oh no... the schedules! The 'Tepig Twin' campaign! I have a dozen contracts signed for two Tepig! What am I going to do with a Pignite and a Tepig?"

Black paled, the realization hitting him. He tried to apologize, "Uh... White... Am I sorry? He just... he really wanted to grow."

I stepped in, placing a hand on White's shoulder. I said calmly, stirring her concerns and plans, "Check your inbox, White. Remember those 'Evolution Growth' concepts I sent you this morning?"

White blinked, quickly tapping her screen. Her eyes widened as she read aloud, " 'The Journey of Growth'... 'From Cute to Crushing'... 'The Big Brother and Little Sister Duo'... 'The Beauty and the Beast'…"

She looked up at me, a slow grin spreading across her face. She said happily, "Azure, you're a genius. This is better! It shows progression! It tells a story!"

Black breathed a massive sigh of relief. He hugged his Pokémon again. Then he said in a proud tone, with Tep's new nickname, "I think you need a name that sounds a bit tougher now, huh? How about... Nite?"

The Pokémon snorted happily, clearly approving, "Pignite! Pig!"

White asked, tilting her head, "Who's Nite?"

Black explained proudly, patting Nite's broad back, "His new nickname. Tep was for Tepig. Nite is for Pignite."

A dry voice spoke from the entrance, "How original."

We all turned to see the group arriving. Nemona was in the lead, vibrating with her usual kinetic energy, followed by Roxie, who was swinging her bass case, and Crispin and Amarys, who looked slightly more composed.

Nemona shouted, sprinting over, "Whoa! Is that a Pignite?"

She began circling Nite like a shark. Her grin widening as she asked in an excited tone with a starry-eyed expression, "Does this mean he's stronger? Faster? Can we battle? Right now? Castelia streets are wide enough!"

White and Amarys shouted in unison, "No battling!"

Roxie said, giving a thumbs-up, "Congratulations, Black! Evolution is the ultimate power chord. It changes the whole melody of your team."

I looked at the group, feeling the camaraderie in the air. Then I offered a meal for Nite's evolution: "Well, an evolution deserves a celebration. How about I treat everyone to Café Sonata? My treat."

Crispin's eyes practically turned into flames as he said, "Food? I heard they have the best spicy snacks in the city! Let's go!"

[Unova Region, Later, Castelia City – Cafe Sonata]

Narrow Street was a stark contrast to the sprawling plazas of the rest of Castelia. It was cramped, shadowed by the towering brick walls of old-fashioned buildings, and paved with cobblestones that echoed with every footstep.

*Clack-clack-clack*

Café Sonata sat tucked away on the right side of the street. It was a modest establishment, but as soon as we pushed through the heavy oak doors, the atmosphere changed. The lighting was low and amber, the air filled with the rich scent of roasted beans and the soft, rhythmic strumming of an acoustic guitar. A musician sat on a small stage in the corner, lost in a melancholic tune.

We pushed a few tables together. As we settled in, Black looked around, his curiosity finally getting the better of him as he asked them, "So, I've been meaning to ask... You guys are the Elite Four of Blueberry Academy, but where's the rest of your squad? And who's this 'Champion' you keep mentioning?"

Crispin sighed, leaning back in his chair. She answered in a tired tone, "Our Champion of Blueberry Academy? That would be our Dragon-Type Specialist Drayton. He was supposed to meet us here days ago."

Black's eyes widened as he exclaimed in shock, "Drayton? Wait, as in... Drayden's grandson? The Opelucid Gym Leader?!"

Amarys said neutrally, her voice clipped and professional, "The very one. He is exceptionally gifted, specializing in Dragon-types. However, his lack of punctuality and general laziness are... mathematically infuriating."

Roxie added, leaning her bass against the wall in a casual tone, "He's a beast in battle, though. He plays his own rhythm, that's for sure. He's competing in the Unova League this year too, just like us."

White asked curiously, sipping on a herbal tea, "And what about the last Elite Four member?"

Nemona answered, her eyes sparkling, "Lacey! She's the daughter of Clay, the Driftveil Gym Leader. She's super sweet, but don't let that fool you—her Fairy-types will wreck your day if you aren't careful."

Black looked like his head was spinning. He asked carefully, feeling a massive headache, "So, Clay's daughter, Drayden's grandson, the Paldean Elite Four... Unova is getting crowded this year."

Nemona laughed, leaning toward me. She explained in an excited tone, "I'm only here because of my dad's business with the Battle Company CEO, Geoff, and to win the Unova League. I had to deliver some papers from Paldea. But once I saw Azure was here? I wasn't leaving until I got a few more rounds in!"

I shook my head. I said in a tired tone to the group, "She's persistent; I'll give her that. My team has definitely gotten sharper since she started chasing us."

Rotom bragged, hovering over the table, "Sharper? We're practically honed to a molecular edge-zzt! Azure's win rate against Nemona remains at 100%, though the average battle duration has increased by 14%! She's adapting-zzt!"

Nemona pouted slightly but then grinned. She said confidently, "Next time, Azure! I'm learning your patterns!"

I said curiously, turning to Black and White, "Speaking of learning… You two have been traveling with those Eevees for a while now. Have you thought about what they want to become? Evolution is a big step, as Nite just showed us."

Black nodded solemnly, looking at the Eevee—Vee—sitting on the table. He said firmly with a grin, "Vee and I talked about it. She wants to be a Glaceon. She likes the idea of being cool and composed under pressure. Plus, an Ice-type would be a huge help against some of the bigger threats."

White stroked her Eevee, Vivi. She also said in a firm tone, "Vivi wants to be a Leafeon. She loves the parks and the forests. She wants to be able to heal and protect the other talent on the agency tours."

I mused aloud, rubbing my chin, "Glaceon and Leafeon. You'll need a Leaf Stone and Ice Stone. If you need help evolving them, I've got some spare stones."

The conversation drifted, the warmth of the cafe wrapping around us like a blanket. But I felt a certain tug in my chest—a resonance. I looked toward the musician on the stage. He was playing a beautiful but incomplete melody.

I stood up, reaching into my bag.

White asked, "Azure? What are you doing?"

I replied with a sly grin, "I think this place needs a bit more... soul.'

I pulled out a Poké Flute, an antique I'd carried across four regions. But this wasn't just any flute. I pulled out my Arc Phone as well, syncing it to the cafe's internal sound system with a quick command to Rotom.

I whispered, "Rotom, pull up the 'Relic Song' arrangement."

Rotom chirped, "Uploading-zzt! Soundstage ready! Go for it, Boss!"

The group went silent as I walked toward the stage. The musician looked up, surprised, as I sat on a stool beside him. I brought the flute to my lips.

I began to play. The first few notes were haunting—low, resonant, and ancient. They seemed to vibrate through the floorboards, silencing the chatter of the other patrons. It was a melody that felt older than the city, older than the region itself.

I thought mentally, 'Zorua, Gengar, Mew... keep the aura steady.'

*Hummm*

I felt the shift in the air before I saw it. A shimmer of light began to coalesce in the center of the cafe. It was like stardust gathering in the dim light of the amber lamps. Members of our group gasped. Black reached for his Pokedex, his hands shaking.

From the light emerged a small, graceful figure. She had long, flowing green hair that looked like a musical staff, with a jewel-like headpiece that resembled a treble clef. Her eyes were wide and filled with a timeless wisdom.

I whispered, not breaking the song, "Meloetta..."

The Mythical Pokémon drifted into the air, her translucent dress shimmering. She looked at me, then at the musician, and then she began to sing.

*Laaa~Meeeel~iiiita*

Her voice was unlike anything I'd ever heard—it wasn't just sound; it was emotion made manifest. It was the feeling of a summer morning, the sadness of a falling leaf, and the triumph of a rising sun all at once.

Nemona whispered, her battle-lust completely forgotten, "Wow..."

She looked genuinely awestruck.

Black's Pokedex chirped aloud as the group listened: [Meloetta, the Melody Pokémon. Its melodies are sung with a special vocalization method that can control the feelings of those who hear it.]

Black froze, his eyes glued to the screen, then back to the Pokémon. He said in a tone of disbelief, "Azure... you just... You called a Mythical Pokémon? Just like that?!"

I didn't answer right away, letting the song reach its crescendo. Meloetta danced through the air, her movements perfectly synchronized with the flute's notes. As the song ended, she landed lightly on the table in front of us, chirping a melodious greeting. Zorua translated into everyone's heads, his voice uncharacteristically soft, 'She likes the vibe here. She says the music in this city is usually too fast, too angry. But this... this was just right.'

Gengar popped out of my shadow, not to scare anyone for once. She reached out a ghostly hand, and Meloetta playfully tapped it with her own. I continued to play the Relic Song tune using my Poké Flute.

Originally, I planned to ask Meloetta to join my team, but for now I'll play the music. Feels too good to stop for now, so after everyone has had their fill, I'll ask Meloetta, but for now there is only the music.
